SUBJECT CHOICE TWILIGHT GALA
On Tuesday 04 September a Subject Choice Twilight Gala was held for parents and students at any level,
but especially at Years 10, 11 and 12, to discuss their son’s or daughter’s course for next year with the
Deans and Senior staff. The evening was deemed a success with over 90 people attending.
Faculties had HOF’s, teachers and current students available to give parents/caregivers and students
more information about the subjects in their Faculty. The Gala started with a brief presentation about
NCEA and subject choice followed by a walk though Faculty areas.
This was a NEW opportunity for whanau and families to get more involved in their child’s choice of
subjects. It was based on information and research and was an excellent opportunity to explore subject
choice in more depth to ensure the right choices were made.
Thank you to all who came for making this evening such a success. Watch out on the calendar for this
event again next year. If you would like more information around subject choices and NCEA please
contact the High School office on 04-9383224.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES – SURVEY REMINDER
Just a reminder about the survey which was advertised in the last newsletter for parents/caregivers,
students, staff and our community regarding a couple of issues pertaining to the High School – the first
being the compulsory uniform and the second, the High School’s stance on smoking.
Following are the uniform requirements for students including the “lightened-up” stance on facial
piercings and electronic equipment. Your voice is important to us so we would appreciate you taking the
time to complete the online survey. There are only ten questions, most requiring either a yes or no
answer.
To register your thoughts please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HKFD6RS. Your responses will
help guide the Board of Trustees in their policy-writing in the coming months.
Martin Isberg, Principal (for the Board of Trustees)

ARTS ACHIEVEMENT – SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Waka Rowlands-Maihi, who has
featured in previous newsletters for his work as lead
actor in the short film, Lambs. The New Zealand
International Film Festival recently announced Lambs
as the Best Short Film for 2012. The short film also
picked up the Audience Award.
It has been confirmed that the short film is to be
adapted to a feature-length film, the script for which
is currently being written by the Director and Writer,
Sam Kelly. Waka is hopeful that there is a role for
him in the film, although he thinks he will now be too
old to play the lead role of Jimmy.
Waka took his mum to the premier and got to walk the red carpet at the Embassy in Wellington. They
had both already seen the film at a private screening, which “brought a tear to mum’s eyes”.
Waka was offered a Scholarship at the New Zealand Performing Arts School, which he is considering but
at this stage he plans to complete Year 12 schooling this year and return for Year 13. While Waka has a
passion for History, he would also like to have a trade from WelTec to “fall back on”.
Waka encourages other students to give new opportunities a try and not be scared to give it a go. He has
recently auditioned for TV voice overs and had some primary script readings. Words of advice from Waka
– “For everything you do – give it all you’ve got.”
WINTER SPORTS AT WAINUIOMATA HIGH SCHOOL
Although winter sports are coming to an end there is still plenty happening this term. Thanks to all the
volunteers and supporters - we couldn’t have done it without you.
Junior Netball
All four netball teams did extremely well. All teams placed in the top four going into the semifinals.
Junior 1, 3 and 4 won their semis. Team 2 lost their semifinal but put up a good fight. The finals were
held at Sacred Heart. Shannon Adams, our Head Girl coached Team 3 and has done an awesome job as a
first time coach. Her team were top of the table for most of the season but unfortunately lost the final by
a small margin. The Player of the Season Award for Team 3 was Fayth Hoeta-Paul who is a real talent for
our school netball. Next there was Junior 4 who played a very strong Naenae team. They had been good
all year especially with their Player of the Season Keri Taiapa–Tekawa who played hard all year.
Fayth Hoeta-Paul
Junior 3 Netball Player of the Season
Keri Taiapa Te Kawa
Junior 4 Netball Player of the Season
Atiria Semmens
Junior 1 Netball Player of the Season
Our last chance to win a final was up to our Junior 1 team, coached by Kelena and Mona Hura. The score
was drawn at half time, we were down by two in the last quarter. Then the team switched up a gear to
win the final by four. The Player of the Season could have gone to the whole team but Atiria Semmens
had a great game. Congratulations to all the Junior Netball teams and once again thanks to all the coaches
and managers.
Basketball
Exciting times with all teams in the semis or finals last week. Junior boys beat Taita in the semi to advance
to the finals on Wed 29 August. Coached by Joe Hemi the team went on to win 74-62 against
Paraparaumu College. Congratulations to the players, coach, management and supporters. The Senior
girls play Tawa in the semi and the following students have been selected as representatives.

Rugby
It has been a mixed season for the rugby teams. The Girls’ team have been performing strongly but lost
their semifinals to an even stronger Naenae team who then went on to win the final. The 1st XV struggled
all season losing our top players to Rugby League and the Wainuiomata Rugby Club. They made the
quarter finals losing to Tawa. Thanks to Richard and Heidi.
The Under 65kg had a great start, with Waka Rowlands-Maihi, team
Captain, taking a strong leadership role along with Dave Skipper,
keeping the boys in line. Ms Keys and Mr Tauveli also supported this
team. They played St Pats in the semi losing 5–nil. The Under 55 kg
team had a strong start with many of the boys stepping up from the
club, Zac Seumanu, Cullyn Cowden and Michael Martin (who made the
Wellington Rugby Under 13’s team). Thanks to the coaches Daniel
Hakaraia, Russell Hunter, Rob Sheard and parents. The under 55kg lost
their semifinals against St Pats Silverstream.
The under 15’s had an outstanding season beating two boys’ schools
Rongotai and Scots College. They now go on to compete in the Under15 tournament in Winter Tournament Week. Thanks again to teacher
Phillip Kaiuka and Moana Kuma.
Michael Martin

Football
This year we went back up to 5 teams with the return of the 15 th Grade Boys Team adding to our 3 Girl’s
teams and 1 Senior Boys. A big thank you this year goes to Stop Out football club who gave us a set of
shirts for our alternative strip. This is really appreciated as we play many teams with similar colours to our
shirts and with the red lotto shirts we have been able to look really great.
The 15th Grade Team played well in the grading round and were put up to Division 2. They won some and
had some very close losses. To run this team ex-student Josh Castle came back to school as Coach. His
time put in to this team is greatly appreciated.
Top 3 goal scorers of this team were Luke Carman 14 goals, Matt Hanson 13 goals and Fawaz Mohammed
11 goals. Congratulations also to our goalie Arizona Cameron for his awesome skills
Our 1st Boys team also went up in grading and came 4 th in the division. They represented the school well
with many exciting games. The team was coached by teachers Kath McGuinness and Debbie Bladen. We
would like to thank them both for giving up their Saturdays to be with our team. The picture below is a
fitness session with Debbie Bladen and the above photo is our last game with our two international
students Shin Takebayashi and Sebastian Dolle returned home and Daniel and Tane before they moved to
tertiary study.
The boys left on Sunday 02 September to Whanganui for Winter Tournament Week. We wish them well
and would like to thank some sponsors of our raffles, Unilever, Clives Pharmacy, Wainuiomata Pharmacy
and New World Wainuiomata - without this support it would be very difficult for our families to send their
boys to tournament.
Our top 3 goal scorers were Rhys Glover (Captain) 14 goals, Michael Sheat (Vice Captain) 10 goals, and 3 rd
= Sebastian Dolle, Callum Mackaness, Ben Millar and Sebastian Resman, all with 6 goals. Congratulations
to all players especially our goalie John McDonald. A thank you to Russell Forbes who assisted when staff
could not attend and a special thank you to Mr Sheat who has helped with the Boys’ Football while his
son has been at school.
Team 2 and 3 Girls were both in the social division and our aim was to have fun and develop skills. It was
great to see improvements in our players and we look forward to 2013.
A big thank you to Rhys Glover and Amalia Lipidis for coaching Team 2 and for all the support they have
given with football this year. They came 4th in the division. A special thank you to Mrs Naidu for being an
adult supervisor along with Mrs Reddy.
Goal scorers were Ella Fifield, Cody Adam-Hay and Ania Tahana. Also a big thank you to Heather Smith
and Gemma Krebbs for coaching Team 3 and Mrs Melrose for being the adult supervisor. They came 5 th in
the division. Goal scorers were Amber Bartels-Mcgregor and Hayley Gee.
Girls 1st Team have just completed the season winning again the Hutt Valley Division 2 Competition
playing in the finals for the 3rd year in a row. This year it was against Taita College and we won 4-2 and
then we won against Tawa 2-1 to be the Regional Champions for a second year. Congratulations to our
Captain Cathy Fussell who has guided this team to such success. We say farewell this year to our Year 13
team members Cathy Fussell, Zoe Clark and Renee Green.
Our goalie must be mentioned, Samara Hill for her many saves and we are glad she will be playing next
year. She is attending the Weltec Trades Academy which allows her to play for us. Top 3 goal scorers are
Jesse Fussell 19 goals, Amalia Lipidis 7 goals and Abby Clark 5 goals. Good luck to the girls competing in
the U19 tournament later this year in Christchurch.
Thank you to Clive Grainger for being the van driver for our girl’s teams and to all the parents supporting
us at the game, transporting, ringing around and general support. Also a thank you to the boys who
regularly refereed the girls games for us. And another thanks to Nick Hanson ex-student who also came
and refereed games.

LEARNING SUPPORT SUCCESSES
Over the last three weeks the ‘C6 Crew’ (Learning Support students and Teacher Aides) have been part of
a Basketball competition (fresh on the heels of our domination at the 10 Pin Bowling comp). We have had
a great three games, coming away with two wins and a loss. The students continually displayed great
team work, and an increasing improvement in their skills during the competition.
Each of these students have represented the school in Swimming, 10 Pin Bowling, Indoor Soccer, and
Basketball; we are very proud of their individual and collective achievements.
