PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
Recently in the news, there has been tremendous concern in regards to the cuts to
education in Alberta. Our superintendent, Chris Smeaton, highlighted how this will
impact students in Holy Spirit Schools in his Superintendent’s Blog that can be accessed
at http://wordpress.holyspirit.ab.ca/?p=1756. I would strongly suggest that you give it a
read. As parents/guardians it is vital that we advocate for our children and their future.
If you are wondering how you can help, I would suggest checking out the website
www.supportourstudents.ca. This website is very informative and is maintained by a
non-partisan group of concerned citizens who value education. I found it very interesting when they asked each party to explain their education platform by answering three
questions focused on funding for K-12 education, classroom sizes in Alberta schools
and transparency and accountability within the Alberta education system. The website
will also direct you on how to write a letter to the political candidates so that your voice
can be heard. Stay informed and make sure to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, May 5th.
The month of May, like all months at our school, is a busy one full of learning and fun!
ESM is proud to be partnering with the Heart and Stroke foundation of Canada to support healthy hearts through their Jump Rope for Heart program. Envelopes for fundraising went home with all students on Thursday. I just checked online and we have already
raised close to $1000! Our goal is $2000 so let’s exceed that goal and stay active by
skipping rope! When you register online you get a free skipping rope and a $5 KickStart Pledge. At ESM, we have many families who have been impacted by heart disease and stroke so we are very happy to be able to help raise money and awareness to
support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In keeping with the staying active theme,
please check within this newsletter for information about our Running Club and consider
registering your child for the Little Souls Marathon through Runner’s Soul. It takes place
on Wednesday, May 27th and is a fun way for students to engage in a non-competitive,
fun race.
Our Marian Mass is scheduled for Thursday, May 14th. Students who have made their
First Communion this year will be invited to dress up in their finery and will be recognized at the mass. Hopefully you can join us at Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Thursday, May 21st, we will be celebrating our FNMI culture and heritage with our annual Heritage Day. More details will be distributed soon! Our grades 1 to 6 French Immersion and French as a Second Language students will be attending the Gregg LeRock
concert at the Yates on Wednesday, May 27th. Gregg LeRock is a Juno Award Winning
musician. If you wish to purchase a CD, order forms are found in this newsletter.

I am the proud principal of the best school ever! Ecole
St. Mary School has been a part of my life since I
immigrated here from Northern Ireland in the
seventies. I have been a student here, a high school
volunteer, a student teacher, a teacher, a parent,
Associate Principal and now principal. This school will
forever hold a place in my heart! When I am not at
school, I enjoy spending time with my husband Darren
and our three teenage kids Riley (19 and attending
University of Alberta) and our twin girls Ailysh and Shalyn (17 and graduating
from grade 12 at CCH this year). I love travelling, walking my dog, reading
entertaining books, and indulging in a nice meal with great company! I believe
that you should smile at everyone you meet because, as Mother Teresa says, a
smile is where love begins!
Keely Semenuik
I teach grade 1 in the French Immersion Program. I
have been teaching at Ecole St. Mary since 2009 and I
sure love it here. As an elementary student, I attended
this school so it is nice to be working at a school that
influenced me so much. When I am not teaching, I
love to spend time with my family. I am married and I
have a 2 year old daughter. We will be welcoming a
second child into our family come September. I really enjoy being outdoors,
spending hot days on our boat, camping in the mountains and gardening. I
have been fortunate enough to travel around Canada and throughout Europe
many times. I love exploring and seeing the history of these communities.
Tracy Witting
This is my first year with Holy Spirit School Division.
I work in the French Early Learning Program and feel
so fortunate to work with the amazing staff and
children here at Ecole St. Mary School.
My husband, Darren and I have been married for 20
years and have 3 beautiful children. Our oldest son
Dakota is 19 and is in his 3rd year of Auto Body
Apprenticeship Program, our daughter Victoria is 17
and is graduating this year, and our youngest son Logan is 10 and is in grade 5
and into a lot of sports that keep us pretty busy. Our family loves to spend time
outdoors, visit with family and friends, and also spend time with all of our
animals.
Michelle Hunt
This year I celebrate my 15th year with Holy Spirit
School Division as a Family School Liaison
Counsellor. I love my job but love more, the students
and staff I’ve been blessed to work with. I started
early in life with Holy Spirit Schools as a student at St
Paul’s school in grade 2, moved to the south side and
attended Our Lady of Assumption and later Ecole St.
Mary Yes, followed my older sister into St. Francis,
Catholic Central High School and lastly University of Lethbridge.
I have two wonderful sons, Kristopher and Tyler a beautiful dog and two
adorable cats, which have provided me with hours of enjoyment, laughter, and
adventure. I find myself in hockey rinks all over Alberta, or attempting things I
would have never dreamed of. We travel, we fly, we camp, and we do chores. I
love to bake, make wine, attend my gym class and be active.
I attend St Peter and Paul’s Church and am very active in the UCWLC. I
believe “faith” is the biggest gift we can give our kids, and share with others
that we come in contact with. My Ukrainian heritage is very rich with tradition
and I am very thankful to be able to express it.
Lise Switzer
I am the French Immersion Program Leader for the
Early Learning Program (Pre-K). This is my 13th year
working in the Holy Spirit Division. I grew up in
Ontario and attended French school until grade 9. I
have been married to my husband John for 33 years
and we have two sons, Graham 21 and Andrew 19
who are both graduates of the French Immersion and
are now pursuing their post secondary education in
Lethbridge and Toronto. I enjoy travelling and spending time with family.
Jodi Merriman
I was born and raised in Lethbridge and went to
elementary school here at Ecole St Mary school. I
think that I have spent more time here at the school
than at any other place - but what a wonderful place to
be! I have been working here in the French
Immersion program for 18 years already!! WOW, how
time flies when you’re having FUN!! While here at
ESM, I have taught ECS, grade 1 and I am presently
teaching grade 2. I even dabbled a bit in grade 6 for a year. When I’m not
teaching, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Brent, and our children: Noël
(28), Ashlyn (23), Ethan (14) and Evan (12). My boys are still at the age
where they keep me quite busy, running them back and forth between hockey
rinks, workout facilities, soccer pitches and basketball courts. Oh, how I love
cheering them on!! I did enjoy a nice break recently in Mexico, where our
daughter, Noël, married her new husband Blair Stolz. It was beautiful and we
are so happy to add a new member to our family. I must say, I am truly
blessed – Life is Good!
Our staff ROCKS!
Jill Olsen
Isabelle Black Plume
I am so thrilled to be working at Ecole St.Mary’s! Prior
to Ecole St. Mary’s I had the pleasure of working at
Our Lady of Assumption School while also finishing
my undergraduate degree in English Literature. I am
an avid hockey player and have recently transitioned
into a coaching role! I am the General Manager of the
AJFHL Lethbridge Eagles and instruct in both
Introduction to Hockey and Bauer First Shift. I am
also very passionate about travel and had the
opportunity to backpack through Central America for four months a few years
ago. I also just booked a month long trip to Hawaii over the summer! I love
working in such a friendly and welcoming school and hope to be back next
year!
Oki! I am the First Nations, Metis, Inuit (FNMI)
Liaison/Support Worker. I am from the Blood Tribe
(Kainai Nation); and belong to the Blackfoot
Confederacy.
I have been with Holy Spirit Catholic Schools since
October, 2001, I transferred to Ecole St. Mary
School from St. Paul School in January, 2004. A
majority of my time is delivering a Blackfoot program
for our First Nations students. I also provide support
and guidance to the families of our FNMI students in the areas of attendance,
transportation issues, academics, and in any other areas that I can assist our
First Nations students. First Nations culture awareness and understanding are
key in the success of our FNMI students.
Since I have been in this job for the last 14 years, I have come to the
conclusion that it is crucial for parents to be involved in their child’s education
both at home and at school. Parents are the first educators of their children
and should continue to do so throughout their entire lives. I continue to enjoy
my work here at Ecole St. Mary School and hope that all our students achieve
to their fullest potential.
Ecole St. Mary School Running Club
It’s that time of year again, when the snow melts, birds sing and children are ready to run and
play outside! At least we hope they are running...running as a school in the Little Souls Marathon that is!
In order to qualify for the marathon, each student needs to run 40.2 km prior to the marathon
event. We will run about 30 km at school. The other 10.2 km will have to be run at home prior
to the May 27 deadline.
The Ecole St. Mary School Running Club is set-up to allow students to accomplish this goal.
Then, on Wednesday, May 27 at 6:30 pm, if the students have registered through Runners Soul,
they will all complete the last 2 km together with students from across Southern Alberta in the Little Souls Marathon.
Participation at the school level is welcome to all students. Participation in the Little Souls Marathon is only for those
students registered through Runners Soul. Register now as the race fills up quickly. A meeting for all students interested in the Running Club will be held in the gym at 10:00am on Monday, May 4th.
For more information on the Little Souls Marathon, you can check out their website at:
www.runnersoulevents.com/littlesouls.
New Playground Equipment
Thank you to our Playground Committee, led by our own Mme Vucurevich, for the added soccer posts and
basketball hoops.
Thank you for helping us stay active and fit at recess!
We know that healthy students are better learners and that’s why our school will be jumping alongside 750,000 students
in over 4,000 schools across Canada with the
Heart&Stroke’s Jump Rope for Heart event on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
As your pledges grow, so do the number of hearts you help protect! Every dollar supports research that saves lives and
makes local communities healthier places to call home.

Homeroom Class Lists 2015 – 2016
Late each spring, school administration meets with the grade level teachers and our Inclusive Education
Liaison, Mrs. Malik, to place students in homeroom classes for the upcoming school year. Much deliberation
goes into these assignments in order to create a balanced classroom. As a team, we discuss:
Student learning needs and abilities
Educational Assistant assignments
Male/female ratio
Behavior needs
Class size
Student relationships with other students
New students to the grade level
As a parent, if you feel there is something we may not know about your child that should be considered when
placing them in a specific class, please email Mme. Boras with the details [email protected]. Class
lists will not be published until the end of August due to the fact that student numbers and teacher
placements may change prior to the commencement of the new school year.

A Message from your School Council Chair – Katie Yanke
Changes to the Universal Child Care Benefit and How You Can Benefit
“Under proposed legislation, the Government is increasing and expanding the UCCB starting in 2015. The
UCCB is being enhanced by providing up to $1,920 per year for each child under the age of 6, and introducing a
new benefit of up to $720 per year for children aged 6 through 17.”
Late last year the Government of Canada announced there would be changes to the Universal Child Care Benefit.
Currently parents/ caregivers of children under 6 receive funding, regardless of income, to assist with the cost of
child care. The amount is increasing and children aged 6-17 will now receive brand new funding. The changes
mentioned above may require you to apply. Remember that all families will receive this regardless of income.
There will be a lump sum payment in July, retroactive to January of this year. You can go to the Canada Revenue
Agency website to learn more and to apply.
For more information please visit:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/uccb
Hello Parents and Community Members,

In this first step, we ask that you share your thoughts on education in our schools. The purpose of this
process is to help us improve our education system so we can better serve the needs of students. We
encourage you to take part in the conversation, helping us set our future direction and ensuring that our
students continue to be cherished and achieve their potential.
Thank you for your support!
