Violence and Drugs
Black History Hall of Fame
St. Landry Branch of the National Association of
University Women inducted five outstanding
citizens into their annual Black History Hall of
Fame. President Malbrough said that her group
traditionally honors only a handful of truly
deserving individuals each year who have made a
significant difference in their community.
NAUW members participated in the Rally: Gloria
Malbrough, President; Celina Richard, 1st Vice
President; Theresa Frank, Florence Milburn and Julia
Duplechain.
This year’s inductees included educator and
administrator Mary Doucet (NAUW member),
Assistant Superintendent of Education Joseph
Cassimere, Physician Calvin White and Opelousas
Police Chief Perry Gallow. Also inducted was
Muriel Thompson (NAUW member) who has
passed away. She was represented at the awards
ceremony by her son Reginald Thompson.
Each one of these individuals has paved the way so
that many others could continue on a successful
journey.

Woman of the Year
Every year we take time out to honor the Woman of
the Year; a woman whose work is worthy of
recognition and praise.
The recipients vary from year to year. They may be
seasoned, or they may be young; they may be a
worker or a retiree. However, there will always be
qualities that all of them have in common, qualities
such as the need to try to make the world a better
place. She is a leader who leads best by example.
She will use her life as a sermon without ever having
to say a word.
The Woman of the Year is a guiding light to those
around her. She is ablaze with hope, charity and love
for her sisters as well as mankind. She is an
inspiration to all around her.

President Doris Dansby hosted a book signing at her
home on January 10 on behalf of Deborah Houston,
JoAnn
author of Father Knows Best. The book is described
Brown
taught by her drug-dealing father worldly lessons of
as being “the compelling story of a young woman
survival that she accepts and practices. However,
upon hearing and embracing the gospel of Jesus
Christ, she is confronted with and questions her
father’s lessons, as she comes to terms with the
unconditional love of her Savior, His purpose for her
life, and the empowerment and destiny He has for her
and every woman of God.”

Greetings Sisters,
Another successful issue!! South
Central really does amazing work.
“All life demands struggle. Those
who have everything given to them
become lazy, selfish, and insensitive
to the real values of life. The very
striving and hard work that we so
constantly try to avoid is the major
building block in the person we are
today.”
