Item Number Voluntary PreKindergarten providers receive a readiness rate, which is based on children’s performance on the three measures of the Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener (FLKRS) – a screening instrument given to children within the first 30 days of attending kindergarten. The FLKRS is aligned to the Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) Education Standards and includes selected measures from the Early Childhood Observation System™ (ECHOS™), which measures classroom readiness, and the first two measures of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills™ (DIBELS™), which measures both sound and alphabet recognition. To calculate the readiness rate, each part of the screening tool is assigned a percentage based on the number of children ready. For example, if eight out of 10 children are ready for kindergarten on the ECHOS™, the VPK provider would receive 80 percent. The sum of all three screening results is totaled to establish the readiness rate of the VPK provider. The highest rate a provider could receive is 300 (100 percent for each of the three screening tools). The following is summary information on the 2007 VPK Kindergarten Readiness Rate: • For the 31 Early Learning Coalitions in Florida, the mean VPK Kindergarten Readiness Rate is 244. • The highest VPK Kindergarten Readiness Rate for any Early Learning Coalition is 259 (Big Bend Coalition and Okaloosa/Walton Coalition). • The mean VPK Kindergarten Readiness Rate for the Early Learning Coalition of Seminole County is 258, which is the second highest rate in the State. • The Early Learning Coalition of Seminole County is tied for second with the Brevard Coalition for the lowest percent (4.8) of low-performing providers. Okaloosa/Walton has the lowest percent (2.0). The Early Learning Coalition of Seminole must annually secure local matching funds to draw the maximum Federal dollars to subsidize school readiness for many children. In 2007-2008, the Coalition was required to raise $254,902 local dollars to draw down $3,994,000 in matching State and Federal funds for subsidized child care slots. The School Board of Seminole County thanks the following major contributors of local matching funds: Seminole County Board of Commissioners City of Altamonte Springs City of Oviedo Heart of Florida United Way 2. Included in the reduction is a 33% decrease in funding for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs. However, the following additional revenue reductions will further reduce the funding available to SCPS for the 2008/2009 budget year: 1. The 2007/2008 March State revenue reduction, covered with non-recurring funding due to the timing of the adjustment ($5.4 million). 2. The loss of interest earnings due to the dramatic reduction in short term interest rates, from 5.25% in August 2007 to 2% in May 2008 ($2.2 million). 3. The anticipated loss of Medicaid revenue for next year ($.55 million). The overall revenue related decrease estimated for 2008/2009 totals to approximately $22.4 million. These revenue reductions, along with the necessity of covering unavoidable cost increases for items such as fuel and insurance, result in a significant budget deficit of approximately $24.4 million. Budget reductions that will impact both the school and district levels are proposed to help offset this deficit. Since a significant portion of the operating budget is related to school level costs (approximately 96%), it will not be possible to make the needed budget reductions without affecting the school budgets. The tentative budget for 2008/2009 includes: 1. a reserve for further declining enrollment (566 FTE, $2.8 million), 2. the estimated increase for health insurance ($2 million), 3. budget reductions due to declining enrollment ($3.6 million reduction), and 4. budget increases for other necessary budget items, the largest of which is $1.95 million for diesel fuel cost increases. Page 21 Mr. Pavelchak reviewed the expenditure and revenue detail on pages 5 through 8 of the work session package. He reviewed the 2007/2008 continuation budget detailed on page 9. He reviewed the cost savings recommendations on pages 10 and 11. Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Excellence and Equity Anna-Marie Cote reviewed plans to reduce the hours of operation for the Student Museum and Environmental Studies Center. Discussion took place regarding the various proposed operational reductions. The Board discussed the effects of raising student fees from the current fee of $3 to $4 or $5. Mr. Pavelchak reported that, for the first time ever, state-wide property tax collections exceed the funding provided by State funding in the State funding formula. The Board discussed the potential disastrous impact of passage of any Constitutional Amendment eliminating the required local effort (property tax) to support public education and replacing the funding with additional sales tax revenue or other state funding. Mr. Pavelchak reported that State sales tax collections are continuing to decline. Mr. Pavelchak also reported on expenditures by function. 95.8% of the district’s operating budget is spent at the school level which is above the state average. He reported that, from the budget reductions in 2001/2002 through to 2007/2008, the district has reduced district level administrative support positions by 26 positions, saving ~$1.3 million dollars. The Budget Work Session package details a remaining budget deficit of $2,829,310. The meeting adjourned at 2:59 p.m. 3. Fiscal Impact: There is no fiscal impact to the District at this time. 4. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board of Seminole County approve Budget Amendment Numbers 45 through 51 as presented. 2. Background/Analysis: State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.006, requires that the School Board approve budget amendments whenever the amounts in the budgetary accounts are changed from the original budget. The budget amendments for each fund reflect the following types of activity: New Revenues: These are included in order to budget revenues, which were not anticipated at the time of the original budget. This category normally includes state and federal grants, insurance recoveries, and other miscellaneous revenues. Routine transfer of funds between budgeted accounts: These are transfers between accounts made by the various cost centers. These are included in the budget amendments in order to comply with the State Board of Education Rule requiring budget amendments for any changes in the function and object amounts. This necessitates that budget amendments be made at the lowest line item level of the budget. As a result, any change in the use of budgeted monies such as buying supplies, instead of equipment requires a budget amendment. Funds Appropriated from Fund Balance or Transfers to Fund Balance: These are transfers from fund balance for specific program needs. The Budget Amendments, Numbers 45 through 51, are summarized on the attached page(s). 3. Fiscal Impact: a) New Revenue Budgeted. b) Transfers are within budget allocations. 4. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board accept the recommendation of the Bus Radio Oversight Committee to discontinue the Bus Radio Pilot program. 2. Background/Analysis: The Seminole County Public Schools Transportation Services requested to pilot a program offered by Bus Radio Inc. This request was initially made at the September 25, 2007 School Board Meeting. On October 9, 2007, the School Board of Seminole County approved an agreement with Bus Radio Inc., allowing for an eight (8) month, 53 bus test pilot conducted through Seminole County Public Schools Transportation Services. The School Board of Seminole County approved the membership of an oversight committee on October 23, 2007, expanded on November 20, 2007. The committee was charged with reviewing Bus Radio, Inc. and asked to make recommendations regarding its content. The committee was formed to review, evaluate and make recommendations as to the content of the programming, which was to include advertising. As tasked, the committee embarked on meeting, discussing, and listening to music programming aired by Bus Radio, Inc. The committee met on the following dates: 2007 – November 5, December 3; 2008 – January 14, March 3, March 19, April 16 and May 7. Committee members reviewed play lists, checked the online web site of Bus Radio, dialogued with Bus Radio personnel (both at meetings and via email), and considered the programming, both music content and advertisements. After committee review of Bus Radio’s play lists, the general concern was the music billed as ‘ageappropriate.’ The music, in general, for the elementary level was considered acceptable, however concerns were raised concerning the music made available at the secondary level (middle and high school). Bus Radio plays a combination of original music, radio edits (different lyrics and/or length than the original song releases), remix (usually involves different instruments and/or collaboration with another artist) and Bus Radio edits. The request from the committee was made to place certain restrictions to music played at the secondary level, such as elimination of all Bus Radio edited songs and any songs on CD’s carrying a parental advisory when on sale in stores. The company was unable to guarantee that they would be able to comply with these parameters. In addition, ‘live streaming’ of current programs being played on buses was never made available as stated in earlier meetings and contacts. Examples made available were just that – examples of programming. Advertisers, whose messages were to be aired during programming time, were still being contacted and secured during this pilot period, leaving an area of unknown messages and sponsors, therefore disabling that effort of the committee to make a decision on acceptability. The committee agrees that, in theory, Bus Radio is a good idea, and realizes that it has a popular presence in some states. Although it appears, on the surface, to allow for more control than standard AM/FM radio stations, further investigation revealed that much of the control our district requested is not currently available. The idea may be worth revisiting in the future. The committee agreed by Page 64 consensus that too many issues were not satisfactorily answered by the Bus Radio, Inc. company personnel, leaving concerns about allowing songs and/or advertisements/sponsors being aired that would imply School Board endorsement. At this time, the Oversight Committee recommends that at the conclusion of the current pilot, Bus Radio no longer be used in any buses utilized by Seminole County Public Schools Transportation Services. In addition, the committee members extend appreciation to the efforts of those bus drivers in the field who participated in this pilot project. 3. Fiscal Impact: There is no fiscal impact to the District at this time. 4. Prepared by: George Kosmac 5. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board of Seminole County approve and execute Resolution No. 2008-04 declaring the Old Geneva School (Buildings 10, 12 and 14) as surplus and unnecessary for educational purposes and authorize staff to negotiate the conveyance of the property to the Island & Village of Geneva Rural Heritage Center, Inc., a Florida not-for-profit corporation and authorize the Chairman and Superintendent to execute the deed of conveyance. 2. Background/Analysis: Based on the information item submitted to the Board on March 11, 2008, staff has been contacted by the Island & Village of Geneva Rural Heritage Center, Inc. expressing an interest in transforming the old Geneva School building into a Rural Heritage Center. This center would educate students, community members, and others outside the community about the rural lifestyle. Since two of the three buildings (Buildings 12 – electrical room and 14 – classroom building) were constructed in 1924 and have been vacant for nearly 20 years, they are beyond economical repair. The remaining building, Building 10, was constructed in 1978 and is an old material storage building for the two buildings on site. Staff deems it in the best interest of the Board to negotiate the conveyance of these buildings and property to the Island & Village Geneva Rural Heritage Center, Inc. and recommends approval of the resolution as presented. This conveyance is deemed to be in the best interest of the public as the proposed grantee is a community association dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the community of Geneva. The deed will be subject to a reverter in the event the corporation should be dissolved or cease to be a notfor-profit corporation. 3. Background/Analysis: In February 2007, a 30 acre site was purchased in the Cameron Heights/Midway area. At that time, cattle were located on the site. Staff has requested a lease to be executed from the cattle owner for liability reasons. The term of the agreement is $1.00 for one year and shall automatically extend for successive yearly renewals upon the same terms and conditions until cancelled by either party. The cattle grazing on this property is beneficial for the upkeep of the site. 3. Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact associated with this action will be a net gain of $1.00 per year. 4. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board of Seminole County approve the selection committee’s recommendation and contract in the amount of $2,140,000 to provide design/build services for the Lake Mary High School Community Swimming Facility project with the team of Perry-McCall Construction, Incorporated. 2. Background/Analysis: On March 20, 2008 the selection committee for the Lake Mary High School Community Swimming Facility interviewed two firms for design/build services. Three firms were short listed however, one firm (Southern Construction Group) withdrew from consideration prior to the interview. The selection committee members were: Barry Gainer, School Board Member Ruth Jayson-Polk, Business Advisory Board Michael McLean & Joe Abel & Randy Morris, Seminole County Gary Brender & Colin Morgan (For John Litton), City of Lake Mary Walt Morgan, Lake Mary High School (For School Principal) Fred Tyler, Lake Mary High School Frank Schwartz, LMHS Booster Club Tara Chamberlain & Randy Morris, LMHS Parents Jay Taylor, Supervisor of Construction As permitted under the provisions of the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF), the design/build RFQ also included the public opening of sealed competitive proposals. The following are the results of the committee ranking along with the competitive proposal amount: Ranking Design/Build Team Proposal 1. Perry-McCall Construction, Inc. $2,585,327.00 2. Clancy & Theys Construction Co. $2,989,487.00 The advertised construction budget for this project was $2,140,000. As established in the tri-party agreement approved by the board on September 25, 2007, reimbursement of funds for the project includes; Seminole County - $1,200,000, City of Lake Mary - $300,000, LMHS Booster Club - $400,000. $240,000 will be funded through SCPS local capital improvement funds to provide changing/restroom facilities and needed support operational space. This is the equivalent cost of procuring two concrete modular structures. The contract format used previously for the construction of the Hopper Center and Midway Safe Harbor project has been updated accordingly and is being proposed for this project. Staff recommends approval of the design/build contract in the not-to-exceed amount of $2,140,000 along with approval of the final selection rankings. 3. Fiscal Impact: The net fiscal impact to the District is $240,000 and is within budgeted funds. Funding Source: 340/7400/4633/9009/8870 4. Prepared by: George Kosmac 5. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board of Seminole County approve the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) submitted by Pro-Spec Inc., in the amount of $617,456 to complete site work for modular concrete classroom structures at Bentley, Hamilton, Partin, Keeth, and Spring Lake Elementary Schools and execute Amendment No. 11 to the construction manager’s current contract agreement. 2. Background/Analysis: The school board adopted the five year capital plan that included funds to provide component classroom facilities at various sites. The Facilities Department developed a schedule and solicited installation proposals from the continuing services construction manager. Pro-Spec Inc. submitted a GMP proposal in the amount of $617,456 to complete site preparation for installing the relocatable units. The work in the amendment includes earthwork & grading, utility relocations and service installations (storm drainage, water, sewer, electrical, and systems), sidewalks, and canopies. The Facilities Planning staff concur that the proposed cost is fair and reasonable, and accurately reflects the work necessary to prepare for the installation of the structures per applicable codes and standards. The installation should be complete by August 1, 2008. 3. Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact associated with this action is $617,456 and is within budgeted funds. Item Number 1. Superintendent’s Recommendation: That the School Board of Seminole County approve the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) submitted by Clancy & Theys Construction in the amount of $327,194 to install a new storm drainage system at Woodlands Elementary School and execute Amendment No. 3 to the construction manager’s current contract agreement. 2. Background/Analysis: On August 9, 2005 the school board approved a construction management contract with Clancy & Theys, to provide construction management at risk services for district wide construction projects under $1,000,000. Clancy & Theys has submitted a GMP proposal of $327,194 to improve the storm sewer system at the Woodlands Elementary School. The Facilities Planning staff concur that the proposed cost is fair and reasonable, and accurately reflects the work necessary to improve the storm sewer system. The project is a partnership between the district and Seminole County. The County has agreed to reimburse the district half the cost of the project and will be acquiring the necessary off-site drainage easement. In providing an overflow path for the retention pond, the potential for the pond to overflow into adjacent private residences is eliminated. The scope of work includes installation of new storm piping, connection to county storm system, repair disturbed landscaping & paving. The work will start upon School Board approval and is scheduled for completion by August 11, 2008. 3. Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact associated with this action is $327,194. Item Number Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) providers receive a readiness rate, which is based on children’s performance on the three measures of the Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener (FLKRS) – a screening instrument given to children within the first 30 days of attending kindergarten. The FLKRS is aligned to the VPK Education Standards and includes selected measures from the Early Childhood Observation System™ (ECHOS™), which measures classroom readiness, and the first two measures of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills™ (DIBELS™), which measures both sound and alphabet recognition. To calculate the readiness rate, each part of the screening tool is assigned a percentage based on the number of children ready for kindergarten. On February 19, 2008, the State Board of Education established the 2006-07 Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Provider minimum Kindergarten Readiness Rate. This is the second year the State Board has set a VPK Provider minimum Kindergarten Readiness Rate. All VPK providers that earned a readiness rate of 211 or higher out of 300 possible points are considered satisfactory providers of the VPK program. Item Number The Grove Academy is a residential facility for students that have been committed for at least a semester by their parents or the courts for drug/alcohol abuse. Three SCPS teachers provide the continuing education experience and a paraprofessional position that helps in the classroom and does the record keeping. A reading coach and a Title I teacher provides services for these students to help with their needs. This is a regular 180-day school year with grades and credit given to those students that complete course work during their stay. For the school year 07-08 we have served 138 students from across Florida. This year a higher percentage of students took the FCAT. We have had one GED recipients and one High School Diploma issued during the 07-08 school year. Eugene Gregory/Consequence Unit is a facility that is run in cooperation with the Sheriff’s Department as a 240-day school year. These students are either on probation or have come from a leveled program within the state and are ready to return to their home school. We have three teachers that teach basic high school courses for credit towards graduation. A reading coach, two ESE teachers and a transition teacher provide needed help to our students. During the 07-08 school year, we have served 299 students at this program. To round out this successful facility we have a secretary and an assistant. We have had two students take the GED and are awaiting the results. Another student passed the GED and his FCAT and has a regular High School Diploma awarded to him. This year a higher percentage of students took the FCAT. The Intake Unit is for those students that are awaiting adjudication and can not go to their zoned school. We have a teacher that helps with remediation and class work while they are at this program. An ESE teacher and reading coach are at the teacher’s disposal for suggestions and help in making sure these students are doing course work that they need. The Juvenile Detention Center is a secure facility that is run with Department of Juvenile Justice rules and regulations. The district provides four teachers that work a 240-day school year in compliance with DJJ standards. During the 07-08 school year, we have served 910 students. They provide remediation, course work, life skills and a CCC lab for the students that have found themselves in this environment. This year a higher percentage of students took the FCAT. The John Polk Alternative School is a classroom that is provided for students that are not adults and are in the correctional institution convicted as an adult. A SCPS teacher provides remediation, computer based courses and GED practice to these students in jail on a 180-day regular school calendar. We have served 31 students during the 07-08 school year. This year a higher percentage of students took the FCAT. South Seminole Hospital has a class for students that have been placed in the hospital. We provide ESE services and a reading coach for support. The class size numbers from 1-18, and varies by age. During the 07-08 school year, 462 students have been served during an average stay of 2-3 days. This program is a 240-day school year. Boys Town is a residential facility that has students placed there by CINSFINS, the courts and in some cases their parents. We provide ESE services and a reading coach for support at this 180-day school calendar program. We have served 131 students during the 07-08 school year. This year a higher percentage of students took the FCAT. Page 85 TAPP has served 152 students this year. Fifty-nine babies were also part of this program during the 0708 school year. Teenage Parent Program provides resources for young parents within their community. SCPS supports these girls in the continuation of their education at their zoned school. Care coordination, nutrition, pre and postnatal health assessments are some of the components of the program’s benefits to teenage parents. GOALS and GUYS, which were closed by DJJ in October of 2007, had served a total of 107 students at these mid-level secured residential programs. These programs had three students pass the GED and one student passed the GED and FCAT, receiving a regular high school diploma. During the 07-08 school year, the Alternative Education Department and Elementary Education worked together to establish an alternative program for elementary students that are habitually in trouble or have committed serious infraction(s). Providing these students with a small classroom situation and needed counseling at Hopper Center will hopefully give them the direction and help needed to transition back into their zoned school. Remote Locations have been established in two of Sanford communities. SCPS has shared their Nova Net licenses with outreach programs, Midway Safe House and Velma Williams Community Center. This initiative will give students, who have dropped out of school, an opportunity to earn credits towards the completion of their high school diploma during the evening and weekend hours. 2. Item Number This information item is an update on several IS Department projects: 1. High-Speed Network Build-Out During the past school year, we have added the following schools to our high-speed network: Middle Schools: Sanford, Jackson Heights, Indian Trails Elementary Schools: Goldsboro (Microwave), Winter Springs, Keeth. In addition, Wilson, Sabal Point, Wicklow, Hamilton and the Annex are awaiting only the final connection before going on the county fiber. This program has been funded by a combination of Microsoft Settlement money and eRate dollars. This year and next, the district is adding some capital dollars into the funding mix. Like all program budgets, however, this one will likely be reduced, which could slow progress in 2008-2009. In addition, the county budget for the crews that do the final connections has also been affected by the decline in state funding levels. The list of schools for 2008-2009 – currently under discussion – will reflect all of these realities. 2. Server Virtualization Server virtualization has been completed at all middle and high schools and about one-half of our elementary schools. Virtualization is running one or more virtual machines (VMs) on one physical machine, and is a well-established and widely accepted practice in the Information Technology world. Virtual machines are used to consolidate the workloads of several servers. The typical ratio in our implementation is one new virtual server to every three existing servers. Server consolidation has many benefits, including savings on hardware, energy costs, and administration of the server infrastructure. Savings on hardware alone approach 50% ($6,500 vs. $12,000 for one virtual environment vs. three traditional environments). This program will be completed at all affected schools in the 2008-2009 school year. 3. nComputing Trials Two of the three trials conducted at three middle schools have been successful, and we are ready to make these money-saving programs part of the district’s hardware purchase strategy for 2008-2009. The third trial – in a classroom setting at Sanford MS – is ongoing, and results will be shared at a later date. Trial number one is a typical thirty station computer lab. The results have been solid, and the savings over 40% ($13,400 vs. $23,400). Trial number two is a typical middle school administrative suite, affecting approximately 10-12 workstations. The results once again have been good, and the savings over 30% ($6,200 vs. $9,200). Note that these savings don’t reflect significant associated power & cooling savings. While these configurations will not work in every instance, our plan is to purchase/recommend them where applicable to stretch thin hardware budgets both at district and school levels. A bid will be processed through Purchasing once estimated purchase volume levels are pulled together. Page 87 4. Parent Notification Systems The installation of 34 Parent Notification Systems funded primarily by state categorical dollars was completed during the months of April and May. The purchase contract that was negotiated with our selected vendor included 14 months of system maintenance, so recurring maintenance payments will not begin until the 2009-2010 school year. That typical annual maintenance cost will be approximately $350 per school. Later this calendar year we will begin a trial of a Substitute Calling Module that will be a part of this vendor’s integrated platform concurrent with their Summer 2008 product release. This area has been a sore spot for the middle, high and larger elementary schools, and it is hoped that this integrated solution may be an alternative that we will be able to offer to them to improve this situation. 5. Zimbra In November, our new e-mail platform, Zimbra, was installed. Recently, we completed our first product upgrade cycle, as well. This modern platform with many new features has been very well-received, especially at the school level, and the recent upgrade has restored most of the Outlook user features that were missing in the initial implementation. 6. Single Domain Sign-On The IS Operations Department is almost complete with the single domain sign-on project. This project removes the separate instructional domain network sign-on requirement, scratching one userid/password combination from the list of those that have to be remembered and maintained by every teacher in the field. 1. Gifted Education The Florida Frameworks for Gifted Education will be implemented during the 2008-09 school year. This Framework provides an extensive and detailed guideline for use with existing rigorous curriculum by enabling teachers to differentiate curriculum and instruction for gifted learners. The Frameworks employs many process methods and tools—calling on teachers to apply strategies and tools for creative and critical thinking, problem solving, planning and decision-making, teamwork and collaboration, and open-ended inquiry into real-life problems and challenges. An introduction to the Florida Frameworks was provided at Teacher of the Gifted Division Meetings this spring and will be followed up with training again in the Fall, 2008. 2. Item Number Bear Lake Elementary The Bear Lake PTA hosted our Annual Spring Fling on Saturday, May 3rd. Students, parents, and community members came out for a fun-filled day. There were carnival style games, inflatable activities, face painting, and a dunk tank to keep the children busy. For parents, a silent auction provided wonderful themed gift baskets, gift certificates, and amusement park tickets. Local business partners provided demonstrations and had vendor tables throughout the campus. What a special day for families to spend quality time together. Geneva Elementary Frosting anyone? Children of all ages dabbled in the art of cake decorating on May 9th as they created Mothers’ Day cakes as part of a Partners in Education project with Publix at Riverside Landing. More than two hundred girls and boys were as pleased as punch with their take home treats. Off campus education is in full bloom this month as fifth graders traveled to experience the excitement of hands on learning. Geneva school “seniors”, fifth grade, explored the natural Florida habitat of the SCPS Environmental Studies Center on May 15-16. While “dry day” is fun, “wet day” with frolicking in the mud is by far the students’ favorite. Their return to campus, with everyone covered in mud and happy as clams, is truly a sight to see! On May 20th, fifth graders explored the sport of bowling at the Oviedo Bowling Center to celebrate their “right of passage” to middle school. Poetry Night was presented by Geneva’s second grade resident poets. Proud parents, grandparents, siblings and friends enjoyed the creative writings and readings of these delightful students the evening of May 20th. What a fabulous way to culminate a year of learning success. Geneva’s Got Talent! Singers, flamenco, tap, clogging and jazz dancers, gymnasts, pianists, cheerleaders, skateboarders, violinists, drummers, guitarists, flutists, actors, and comedians were all in the spotlight for the Geneva Elementary Annual Talent Show. Audiences were well entertained as students brought talent to the Mustang stage on May 22nd. Applause, applause to all participants! Lake Mary Elementary Kimonos were the dress of the day on Friday, May 2nd when kindergarten classes hosted a Japanese Tea. Each classroom was its own restaurant. Kindergarten students took turns acting as hosts and servers. All of the food received rave reviews by local critics. Hand made Japanese place mats added to the atmosphere. The restaurants were so successful that parents had to make reservations in advance. However, Mrs. Wright, school principal, was able to use her celebrity status to wrangle a table on short notice. The restaurants allowed students to apply their knowledge of Japanese culture and show of their speaking, writing, math and teamwork skills. During the first week in May, each first grade class took a trip to the Environmental Center for a hands-on experience with wild Florida. This was easily the favorite field trip of the year for many students. Students went on a nature walk looking at leaves and caterpillars. Upon return to school, the first graders had sharp eyes looking out for the types of plants and caterpillars in the school butterfly garden. Kindergarteners have also been learning about caterpillars and butterflies. Each class has followed at least one caterpillar through metamorphosis. Students observed and noted when and how long each stage of metamorphosis occurred. Mrs. Johnston’s class was quite surprised when several caterpillars made a weekend jailbreak. The final escapee was found two days later after having crawled the length of Page 90 two classrooms! The caterpillar’s return was celebrated with the bestowal of the name Hercules. Though they had names and were loved by students, all of the butterflies were released into the school butterfly garden to enjoy a full life. Everyday students check the butterfly garden for their Painted Lady and Monarch butterfly friends. The Lake Mary Elementary community celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week from May 5th through May 9th. The week began with a delicious catered breakfast compliments of the administration. Students presented homemade cards, flowers and gifts to show their appreciation. On Wednesday, Liz Knight and the cafeteria crew provided a barbeque lunch for all staff members. Administration gave each teacher a school tote bag on Thursday. PTA held daily drawings for gift cards to fabulous local businesses, provided appetizers on Wednesday afternoon, and gave teachers a Target gift card on Friday. By Friday, teachers were happy to use their new tote bags to carry home their treats! On Friday May 9th, fourth and fifth graders enjoyed a music presentation by the Asian Cultural Association. The dance presentation focused on the geography and cultures of Asia. Students agreed that musical dance was a great way to learn. The music continued on May 13th as the chorus and band preformed for the school. The annual end-ofthe-year concert included choral selections from High School Musical II and favorite Disney songs. The band played several jazz selections and a variety of tunes that highlighted each section. Friends and family attended an evening concert the same day. Musical director, Amy Gonzalez, and band and chorus members celebrated the year’s hard work and accomplishments on May 15th at a skating party at the RDV sports complex. May 16th was a day of celebration for fifth grade students at the DARE graduation. Fifth grade students spent the spring semester studying the drug abuse resistance education curriculum with Officer Crawford of the Lake Mary Police Department. To be a DARE graduate, students were required to complete an essay about what they learned about peer pressure, coping with the difficulties of adolescence, and the dangers of drug abuse. Friends and family attended this exciting event. Kindergarten students held a dress rehearsal of the musical program Roots and Shoot, at the Renaissance Nursing Home. Residents at Renaissance were an attentive, affirming audience while nervous kindergartners worked through stage fright. Students were delighted at the opportunity to be good neighbors by visiting the local nursing home. A formal performance was held at the school on May 22nd and was open to all kindergarten parents. Along with awards ceremonies in the classrooms, May 22nd was a day for celebrating this important and exciting kindergarten year. PTA hosted quite a party, Wednesday, May 21st. Students who were on the honor roll at least one time this school year were recognized. Affirming the school’s commitment to academic excellence, PTA cheered on the hard working honor students and celebrated another year of learning. Lake Orienta Elementary The construction of the intermediate building is progressing nicely. It is exciting to see it take form as the workers have installed awnings, windows, and even started landscaping! During the week of May 5th through May 9th Teacher Appreciation Week was celebrated at Lake Orienta. PTA provided a week of special recognition for the wonderful, hard working teachers. Students wrote on paper apples why they appreciate their teachers and made “apple chains” to display in the front office. On Friday, April 25th the “Strength Team” came to Lake Orienta to speak with fourth and fifth graders about bullying, peer pressure, and being a successful adult. Students were captivated as the team bent rod iron and tore a phone book in half; but more importantly, students were motivated to be confident in themselves. Page 91 Fourth grade FCAT Writing+ scores are in and we are ecstatic! This is the gate keeper for Lake Orienta to make AYP and the calculations look great! Longwood Elementary Longwood Elementary went on a “Reading Road Trip” at the Scholastic Book Fair from April 21st through April 25th in the media center. The Book Fair offered books and educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children’s classics, interactive software, adult books and current bestsellers from more than 150 publishers. The Book Fair Family Night was on April 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Families listened to featured author, Heather Dakota, as she discussed what life is like as an author. Her books were made available to purchase and were signed after her presentations. Family night included door prizes and dinner sponsored by PTA. The Longwood Student Council created a beautiful, landscaped Giving Tree Garden. The Student Council sponsors received a grant from The SCPS Foundation and created a place where students, staff, and parents can go to read and enjoy. Posted in front of the Giving Tree Garden is a sign where daily positive messages are posted to uplift and encourage students to make good choices. Skate Night was held on May 8th at Semoran Skate way. This was the last skate night event of the year hosted by PTA. The fun outing serves as part of the outreach program to families and students to increase parental involvement. Attendees received door prizes and Mrs. Uliano’s class received the silver skate award for the highest attendance. On May 23rd, Longwood PTA sponsored Bingo Night, another Family Fun Night event. Everyone had a blast and a capacity crowd of families attended who were anxious to shout “bingo!” Wicklow Elementary Mariah Ruffin, Wicklow’s Disney Dreamer and Doer was selected as one of the Top 100 Dreamer and Doers this year. Mariah has been at Wicklow since kindergarten. She is vice president of Student Council, on the Yearbook Committee, and a member of SECME. Outside of school she volunteers and participates in a dance company. Her mother was recognized as Wicklow’s School Related Employee of the Year and her grandmother, Carolyn Hevey, works in the Human Resources Department at the Educational Support Center. Kevin Kennett, fifth grader, was selected as a recipient of the Seminole Association of School Administrators’ Phoenix Award for 2008. This award recognizes students who overcome obstacles and hardships and demonstrates qualities of a good citizen. He will be recognized at the SASA banquet on May 29th. 2. Prepared by: Beverly F.
