After an eight-year experiment intended to improve consumer engagement — and Nielsen ratings — the ACM has abandoned fan-voting for entertainer of the year and its three newartist categories, thanks to the cost of participation and several rifts that had developed among artists. The program was controversial from the start. Kenny Chesney, after winning the first fan vote for entertainer in 2008, criticized the process CHESNEY ROMEO backstage, complaining that instead of acknowledging artists’ hard work, the vote had devolved into a marketing contest that rewarded people for “seeing how hard you can push people’s buttons on the Internet.” But in 2015, the controversy seeped into the ACM board room, leading ACM CEO Bob Romeo to reluctantly cancel plans for fan voting beginning with the 2016 ceremony, scheduled for April 3 in Las Vegas. “Fundamentally, I still believe the fans should have input,” he says. “I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with them having input in the final five, but we found out our best intentions were starting to, if you want to use the word, bite us in the behind.” As a result, entertainer finalists Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert — and the 14 total candidates for new male vocalist, new female and new vocal duo or group — have to put their focus on industry voters instead of their fan base if they intend to campaign. At least some of those artists are comfortable with that. A year ago, three different acts got into heated disagreements, accusing their competition of breaking the accepted rules. BRYAN Romeo declined to name the acts or the perceived infractions, though he does say he did not believe any artists were intentionally cheating. The biggest of the rules in fan voting was that an artist was not to give anything away in exchange for a vote — no free downloads or concert tickets, for example. A board member, speaking on background, said some artists were engaging in negative promotion, putting down their opponents to build up their own case. “At the end of the day, that’s just something the academy BRYAN: JIM WRIGHT INSIDE FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 1 OF 23 can’t be behind,” says Romeo. “It’s a no-win for the academy to be put in a position that would [set up] acts to bicker to each other.” However, that was not the lone problem. The growth of digital media created policing issues. Initially, the ACM attempted to avoid cheating by allowing only one vote to be cast from a specific IP address, a number that tracks a computer or digital device when it connects to the Internet. But as smartphones, iPads and other devices have given individuals an increasing number of connections, it’s conceivable that a single user could still have five or more ways to vote, notes Romeo. Complicating that situation, the ACM typically allowed voters to cast one vote per day for a specific period. If the voting period was two weeks, that could create as many as 70 legal votes from one fan who was hyper-motivated to see their favorite performer win. Artists found clever, if obvious, ways to encourage voting. In perhaps the most famous example, Taylor Swift shot a video with her cat, Meredith, to mobilize her followers, tagging the clip with a message to “vote now and every day through April 1st at VoteACM.com.” In a 2013 campaign, which TopSpin details here, Bryan’s website was temporarily fitted with a splash screen that encouraged visitors to vote for him, even allowing them to click through to the voting page on the ACM’s site. Fans who went the extra mile and posted a message on Facebook or Twitter telling their friends how to vote also received a free video download. The potential payoff for a successful campaign is obvious. But not every artist feels comfortable asking for votes. It’s akin to being a salesperson — a Donald Trump, if you will — and many acts likely fear that going on the digital stump waters down the emotional messages that are ideally at the heart of their work. Artists with that viewpoint are at a disadvantage in fan voting. “I had a few artists tell me last year that they just didn’t feel like campaigning,” allows Romeo. “Some people have an issue with that, so that starts a split in the nominees — three of ’em like fan voting; two of ’em don’t care for it. That was an issue for some of those people.” The antagonism wasn’t entirely relegated to the artists. Labels have routinely waged campaigns on behalf of their acts, though the cost of wooing the industry — or, at least, reminding them an act is on the ballot — is typically smaller. Romeo indicated campaigns for entertainer of the year were regularly running $100,000-$150,000. “That was never our intent,” he says. Adding to the issue, according to the board member, other awards shows have enacted fan voting and social media components. The volume of calls to action for self-serving goals is beginning to create fatigue among many artists’ fan bases. In the end, removing fan voting eliminates a discrepancy. The winner, for example, of entertainer will now be voted on by the same people who select the male or female vocalist winner. But it’s a change that may not be forever. “It’ll come back,” predicts Romeo. “We’re just ahead of our time. It’ll come back.” FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 2 OF 23 Thomas Rhett celebrated two chart-topping singles, “Crash and Burn” and “Die a Happy Man,” during a No. 1 party on Feb. 22 at Bartaco in Nashville. He’s also ever-present in other media with a positive, caring persona.” Adds Universal Music Group Nashville chairman/CEO Mike Dungan, “Keith continues to bring fresh, challenging, game-changing life to everything he does.” SWEET SIXTEEN On Hot Country Songs, Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man” (Valory) holds the No. 1 spot for a 16th week (the last 15 in succession). The song is now tied for the third-most weeks at No. 1, dating to the chart’s 1958 inception as an all-encompassing genre ranking, with Buck Owens’ “Love’s Gonna Live Here” (1963). Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” (2012-13) reigns with 24 weeks on top, followed by Leroy Van Dyke’s “Walk On By” (19 weeks, 1961). A LITTLE BIT ROCK While Chris Stapleton leads Top Country Albums for a 14th week with Traveller (44,000), veteran pop/rock group Sister Hazel makes its Top Country Albums debut, as Lighter in the Dark (Croakin’ Poets) arrives at No. 4 (8,000). The 14-song set includes a collaboration with another artist that has made the transition to country, Darius Rucker (of Hootie & The Blowfish), who is featured on the set’s “Prettiest Girl at the Dance.” The LP also starts at No. 3 on Folk Albums and No. 12 on Top Rock Albums. HIGH PRAISE On Country Digital Songs, Maren Morris lifts 4-1 with her debut single, “My Church” (Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) (34,000 downloads sold). The country music anthem is Morris’ first No. 1 on a Billboard songs chart. Says SMN executive vp promotion/artist development Steve Hodges, “When the perfect storm aligns, it’s fun to watch a hit rise to the top. The audience is reacting [to “Church”], then buying it.” Get your message front and center with top country radio programmers and other key music influencers THE COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTRY’S MUST-HAVE SOURCE FOR NEWS ANALYSIS AND CHART INFO. The song surges by 12 percent to 44.6 million audience impressions in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. Upon hearing the news, Urban told Billboard, “I’m amazed, I’m touched, and I’m deeply moved by these 19 No. 1s. All I can say is wow and thanks to country radio and Capitol. I’m so grateful that I get to do what I do. I love it more and more. I want to say thank you to my father, too. He put country music in my blood. I wish he were here to see this.” Urban’s No. 1s sum lifts him into a tie for fifth place with Brad Paisley for the most Country Airplay leaders in the chart’s 26-year history, passing Garth Brooks (18). Tim McGraw leads with 27, followed by Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson and George Strait (26 each); Blake Shelton (21); and Brooks & Dunn and Toby Keith (20 each). “Break” makes the biggest jump to the top this decade and the greatest since Rascal Flatts’ “Here Comes Goodbye” also roared 6-1 on April 25, 2009. Ricky Van Shelton boasts the biggest positional surge to No. 1 in the chart’s archives, having hurtled 9-1 with “Keep It Between the Lines” (Oct. 12, 1991). Penned by Ross Copperman and Jon Nite, “Break” is the second single from Urban’s forthcoming album Ripcord. Launch track “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” peaked at No. 2 on both Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs. Back as a celebrity judge for URBAN the final season of Fox’s American Idol (with Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.), Urban is gearing up for his Ripcord World Tour, beginning June 2 in Kansas City, Mo., and featuring opening acts Maren Morris and Brett Eldredge. Urban first reached No. 1 on Country Airplay with “But for the Grace of God” in 2001 and has maintained his clout since. “There’s no question that the songs that Keith records are the most important reason for his success. BOBBY BONES PREPS FOR 5 STARS If you’re hearing someone who sounds like Luke Bryan deliver a unique take on the Gettysburg Address, or Carrie Underwood’s angelic voice lamenting her partner “peeing on the toilet seat” in a love-gone-wrong song, you’ve no doubt gotten hold of the first full-length comedy album from Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots. The duo — comprising nationally syndicated country radio morning host Bones and his show’s media producer and on-air personality Eddie Garcia — is readying its first full-length project for a March 18 release date on Black River Entertainment. The album’s comically manipulative title, The Critics Give It 5 Stars, was no accident. “Let’s hope people accidentally mistake the album title for a real review,” says Bones. The project is packed with collaborations with A-list country stars including Underwood, Brad Paisley, Charles Kelley, Kelsea Ballerini and an uncredited Garth Brooks. Some of Nashville’s top songwriters also helped compose the tracks, including writer-artists Kristian Bush and Thompson Square’s Keifer Thompson. Bryan does not appear on the album, but is impersonated by a spot-on Garcia. While Bones has developed relationships with many artists through his radio show, he didn’t expect to land all the guest stars he eventually did. “I would ask and expect ‘no’ every single time,” he admits. “We got really lucky that a lot of these people are just fun, cool people that don’t take themselves too seriously. Nobody really said no.” Bones says working with some of Nashville’s hit writers elevated his game. “I can write little dopey songs, but to watch … whoever I was working with actually sit there and craft out what they do, it was really an experience and a learning tool for me.” Go here for the full story. —Phyllis Stark MOVERS AND SHAKERS Alpha Media closed on its purchase of 114 stations from Digity Radio, a move that gives Alpha a total of 251 outlets in 53 markets. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 16 OF 23 MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND [email protected] Dierks Bentley’s Grimy ‘Beach’ Is Just Another ‘Plane’ Ol’ Hit Dierks Bentley didn’t originally think of “Somewhere on a Beach” as a sequel to “Drunk on a Plane,” but the similarities between the two songs were pretty obvious to many around him. Both center on the main character traveling by air to a sandy resort as he grapples with a broken heart. Cementing the ties between the two, the “Somewhere on a Beach” video, which launched Feb. 26, was shot in Puerto Morelos, Mexico — a village near Cancun, the destination in “Drunk on a Plane” — and it features a Seth Rogen-like character who played a secondary role in the “Drunk” vid. Bentley almost axed “Drunk on a Plane” from the Riser album during production in 2013, and he had reservations about making “Beach” a lead single as he put together his forthcoming project, Black. “When I go into album mode, I get very serious, and I’m trying to really write about stuff that’s happening in my life,” he says. “I have great people around me that don’t direct me. They might nudge me here and there and be like, ‘Man, don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s OK to put something out that’s fun. You are known for that.’ And then I’m like, ‘I am?’ They’re like, ‘Yeah.’ ” Fun is at the heart of “Somewhere on a Beach.” The chorus shout-out — “She’s got a body/And she’s naughty” — is a provocative phrase that has never been uttered in a country single before, and it’s all surrounded by a buzzing, grimy guitar initiated by Jedd Hughes, the same guy who played the woozy lick in “Drunk on a Plane.” “I thought that this could be the ‘Drunk on a Plane’ moment on this record,” producer Ross Copperman (Brett Eldredge, Eli Young Band) says. “And I thought BENTLEY it was an essential piece.” “Somewhere on a Beach” originated from two different pieces that were started during the summer of 2015. The title came out of a Gulf Coast excursion by songwriters Jaron Boyer (“Hell of a Night”); Josh Mirenda, a developing artist Boyer is producing; and Michael Tyler, whom Reviver recently signed as an artist. “We came up with the idea when we were in Destin,” says Boyer. “We had a few lyrics, but we didn’t really finish it.” Meanwhile, Los Angeles-based songwriter-producer Dave Kuncio, who’s had writing credits on tracks by Selena Gomez and Prince Royce, built an elaborate track in June 2015 around a spacious, two-bar guitar lick. “I was just jamming one day and kind of stumbled into the riff and thought it was cool,” recalls Kuncio (pronounced “COON-see-oh”). “It was kind of a happy little accident.” It had the tone and the pacing of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge,” though he had a different direction in mind for the end product. “It originally started as kind of a hip-hop idea,” says Kuncio. “I’ve been kind of immersed in that world in the past year-and-a-half, so when I came up with the riff, I wasn’t originally thinking a country song. I thought it could be more of a soulful, Justin Timberlake-type thing.” Kuncio had no words for it, but he created an instrumental bed for an entire song, including a bridge section, and stored it. The following month, Kuncio met pop/hip-hop producer Fuego (Chris Brown, Jason Derulo) — aka Alex Palmer — during a writing retreat. Fuego subsequently came over to Kuncio’s house for a songwriting session, and when they finished another song, Kuncio brought the other track out of storage for some feedback. Fuego liked it and did a little work on it that day, then got permission to take it along when he headed to Nashville. Fuego introduced it during a writing date on Music Row with Boyer and Mirenda, who assumed Fuego had created the entire track. “We didn’t even know Dave was on the song,” says Boyer. As they fiddled with it, Tyler popped into the writing room unexpectedly. Boyer invited him to sit in on the session, and once Tyler heard the track, he announced it was time to finish the “Somewhere on a Beach” song they had started in Destin. “Then we took off with it,” says Boyer. “M.T. lucked into a freaking big ol’ hit that day.” As is often the case when a group project gets going, the origin of the “body”/“naughty” rhyme is sketchy. So is the “gettin’ sun/gettin’ some” couplet that comes later in the chorus. Either way, the guy gets his revenge on the ex as he boasts about a new, insatiable relationship, which may — or may not — be real. “Sometimes guys can lie,” cautions Boyer. “Like if a girl asks how we’re doing, we’ll be like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m doing great. I got a new girlfriend.’ This was just conversation, like this guy could be lying to her. You never know.” They made a demo with Tyler singing high notes over the guitar riff, plus a series of synthetic drum sounds and sonic effects. It generated instant interest on Music Row. Florida Georgia Line put it on hold for a bit, and producer Michael Knox (Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett) made it part of his pitch as he shopped Tyler for a recording deal. When Bentley’s executive producer, Arturo Buenahora Jr. (Eric Church), heard it, he recommended it to Bentley, who eventually won the battle. The tracking session was a bit of a party. Guitarist Danny Rader provided the spare chord chunking, and Hughes found a nasty lead tone that gave “Beach” a little more of a grinding edge. “Jedd Hughes was sitting down with a bottle of Wild Turkey, just playing that solo over and over and over and over again,” says Bentley. “We already had it, [but he was] just like, ‘No, let me play it again,’ because it felt so good.” The track as a whole, however, wasn’t quite right. “We did not nail it in the moment,” admits Copperman. “It was the wrong tempo, and — kind of like with ‘Drunk on a Plane’ — I ended up taking that track home and totally, totally reconstructing it.” Rader helped reimagine a lot of the guitar work during overdubs at Copperman’s house, and Bentley repeatedly popped in during odd hours when his kids — and Copperman’s — were sleeping to take another shot at the vocals. “In its demo form, it’s almost like an urban delivery of the lyric,” says Bentley. “We’re different people. [At first], I was too much like him. [Later], I’m singing too much like myself. I just kept going back and forth to get it locked in.” Copperman had inserted some programmed percussion effects, similar to the demo, and as Bentley started circulating the song among trusted allies, that element felt uncomfortable. So that got reworked, too. “The last time through it, we were like, ‘Strip all that stuff out. Let’s make this track just sound like vinyl,’ ” says Bentley. Like “Drunk on a Plane,” “Beach” has superceded Bentley’s expectations. Capitol Nashville released it to radio via Play MPE on Jan. 19, and it has soared to No. 18 on Hot Country Songs in just six weeks, making it the fastest-rising single in his 13-year career. It was one of four contenders as the lead single from Black, and Bentley is understandably confident they made the right choice. “Anyone that hears this song can obviously tell this is a different project than the one before, and it’s going to be great for the summer, so everything feels like it’s coming together,” says Bentley. “Everything is just kind of stacked up, really setting up the possibility of really having one of our biggest years yet.” BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 18 OF 23 THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK [email protected] Despite Life-Changing Medical Ordeal, WSLC’s Jaymes Keeps Looking Ahead Once a prominent figure at radio industry events and conventions, Robynn Jaymes has been largely off the radar in recent years while battling a serious illness and struggling to stay afloat amid mounting medical bills. While not cured of the chronic pancreatitis that put her in the hospital for 40 days in late 2011 and nearly claimed her life, Jaymes has been bravely fighting back. Even amid additional medical and personal setbacks, the midday host at Roanoke, Va.’s WSLC (Star Country) has emerged from the ordeal with a profound appreciation for what life now brings her way. “I thought I was grateful before,” she says, “but I can tell you that I have a whole bigger sense of gratitude now than ever before.” Jaymes has spent her whole 30-year career in country radio, beginning at WYYD Roanoke, where she rose through the ranks to PD before moving to crosstown rival WSLC for mornings in 2001. Her health was good until four-and-a-half years ago, when she came down with what she first thought was just the flu — that is, until she began vomiting blood. “I was in shock by the time they took me to the emergency room,” she recalls. “I was out of it, so I just heard the doctor say, ‘You have pancreatitis,’ which meant nothing to me at that time. My only reference was Patrick Swayze, who had pancreatic cancer. So I knew it was some serious stuff, whatever it was. They admitted me to the hospital right away, and I don’t even remember the first week I was [there].” By then, her organ had gone into a state called a pancreatic flare-up, which Jaymes says causes it to “auto-digest itself, which is really creepy. It sounds like a bad horror movie.” Her other vital organs also became inflamed and began to shut down. During those early days in intensive care, she says hospital staff “asked me for my end-of-life choices … I remember thinking, ‘This is how it ends?’ ” JAYMES She was soon transferred to a hospital in Charlottesville, Va., that was equipped with a pancreas division and was put on a feeding tube. “You have to just completely rest your pancreas,” she explains. “It can’t work at all. I couldn’t even smell food, because if you smell food, you start to salivate, and that makes your pancreas want to start working.” She was off the air from the Wheeler Broadcasting-owned station for nearly a year and faced five surgeries during that time. “When they first got it under control in Charlottesville, they told me [I’d be out] two to three months, and that sounded crazy to me. I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll be back to work before then.’ But no, it was 10 months before I came back. It was like dealing with the flu every day. You’re nauseous and you have pain … [from] internal swelling. I just really had no idea I could hurt that bad on the inside. The nausea’s the really hard part to deal with. I can push through the pain, but the nausea’s really challenging, and I still have that.” When she returned, station president/GM Leonard Wheeler offered her the less taxing midday shift, and she gratefully accepted. But things haven’t been easy. Three years ago she lost her mother to cancer. “She was … a huge encouragement to me to keep going on those days when I thought I couldn’t,” says Jaymes. “I try to carry her tremendous courage and bravery with me every day.” Then in fall 2015 she developed a stomach condition called gasteoparesis as a result of being treated with antibiotics for bronchitis. That had her off the air for another month until her return early in 2016. In addition to the physical burden, the whole ordeal has taken a financial toll. Despite having good insurance through her employer, the combination of not working and her portion of what she calls the “monster” medical bills eventually caused Jaymes to lose everything. “The first bill I got when I got out of the hospital was in excess of $100,000,” she says. “I lost my house. I lost my savings. I live in the basement of a friend’s house now. Kind of humbling at this point in my life and career, you know? It’s not where I thought I’d be.” As a radio broadcaster, Jaymes has been involved with scores of fundraisers, but was humbled when her community came together to hold one for her. While she was grateful, she admits, “It starts a depression.” After returning to the airwaves, she began sharing her difficult journey with her listeners. She says, “I’ve tried to be very transparent about it. The listeners have been just simply amazing. I can’t get over the community here.” Fans now often stop her when they see her around town and tell her they’re praying for her. Although she continues to regain strength, Jaymes will deal with pancreatitis for the rest of her life, and the food restrictions have put a damper on socializing. “Think about how social food is,” she says, noting that her dietary restrictions have “changed things completely. If [friends] say, ‘Come over for dinner,’ I have to say, ‘I can only eat this, this and this.’ Really not big options. “I can eat cardboard,” she jokes of her dietician-regulated intake. Off the menu are red meat, red sauces, pizza and all spices. She must also set alerts on her phone to remind herself to take all of her medications. While she’s not yet ready to declare herself a “comeback kid,” jokes Jaymes, “I’m in training for it every day.” Meanwhile, she’s enjoying a new outlook on life. “Each day, I’m excited to wake up and continue to do what I love, and I feel blessed.” Topping her gratitude list are Wheeler, Star Country PD/morning man Brett Sharp, morning co-host Boomer and the rest of the team who covered for her, even combining morning drive and her midday slot into one long shift to fill the gap during her absences. “It’s a huge deal, and they’re very supportive,” she says. These days, says Jaymes, “I appreciate crazy things [like] just walking out the front door [and seeing the sun.] On the cloudy days, I look for the colors. I get to do so much, and I’ve had the opportunity to do so much in my life, with my career, that I’m just super thankful for everything that’s come my way.” She also has a newfound sense of empathy. “I can relate so quickly to people now that are going through a struggle,” she says. “I want to be an encouragement and try to say something [to] let them know [to] keep going. On the dark days, you really do need it. I did.” On her show and Web page, she has added a feature called “Warm and Fuzzy,” in which she shares a daily inspirational story. While she says the whole experience still feels “surreal” and “like someone else’s story,” Jaymes has managed to hold on to her sanity, her faith and her positivity. “After all I’ve been through,” she says. “I still feel blessed.” BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 19 OF 23 Country Indicator THIS WEEK LAST WEEK WKS ON CHART l 2 l 3 l 4 l 5 l 6 l 7 l 8 l 9 l 10 l 11 l 12 l 13 l 14 l 15 l 16 l 17 l 18 l 19 l 1 19 BREAK ON ME H it Red/Capitol Nashville 2 14 HEARTBEAT 1 9/Arista Nashville Carrie Underwood 3 40 5 8 1 TITLE Imprint/LabelArtist AUDIENCE (IN MILLIONS) PLAYS THIS WEEK +/– THIS WEEK +49 8.884 4683 +200 8.924 WE WENT Stoney Creek Randy Houser 4377 +104 8.408 24 BEAUTIFUL DRUG J ohn Varvatos/Southern Ground/Republic/Dot Zac Brown Band 3853 +74 7.571 17 DRUNK ON YOUR LOVE A tlantic/WMN 7 16 CONFESSION R epublic Nashville Florida Georgia Line 9 9 HH No. 1 (3 weeks) HH Keith Urban 4710 +363 7.263 3706 +135 6.974 YOU SHOULD BE HERE W arner Bros./WMN Cole Swindell 3644 +302 6.998 6.293 HH Most Increased Plays HH Brett Eldredge 3790 10 17 NOBODY TO BLAME M ercury Chris Stapleton 3404 +125 12 12 SNAPBACK R CA Nashville Old Dominion 2927 +192 5.315 11 24 I LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT B ig Machine Rascal Flatts 2898 +92 5.408 14 7 MY CHURCH C olumbia Nashville Maren Morris 2664 +199 4.729 13 41 THAT DON’T SOUND LIKE YOU C urb Lee Brice 2625 +77 4.930 15 21 MIND READER B roken Bow Dustin Lynch 2529 +234 4.650 17 8 THINK OF YOU R epublic Nashville/RCA Nashville Chris Young Duet with Cassadee Pope 2481 +317 4.606 18 6 SOMEWHERE ON A BEACH C apitol Nashville Dierks Bentley 2454 +293 4.558 16 23 REAL MEN LOVE JESUS A tlantic/WEA Michael Ray 2316 +69 4.336 19 6 HUMBLE AND KIND B ig Machine Tim McGraw 2226 +294 4.053 21 24 HEAD OVER BOOTS C apitol Nashville Jon Pardi 2080 +160 3.736 20 25 STONE COLD SOBER V alory Brantley Gilbert 2071 +139 3.899 20 22 17 SHUT UP AND FISH D ot Maddie & Tae 1876 -18 3.248 l 22 l 23 l 2 l4 25 l 26 l 27 l 2 l8 29 l 3 l0 23 27 BETTER IN BOOTS C olumbia Nashville Tyler Farr 1776 +30 3.254 24 15 IT ALL STARTED WITH A BEER W arner Bros./WAR Frankie Ballard 1603 +97 2.949 25 12 FIX B ig Loud Chris Lane 1574 +177 2.734 26 32 NIGHT’S ON FIRE M CA Nashville David Nail 1459 +123 2.541 27 4 T-SHIRT V alory Thomas Rhett 1397 +277 2.500 28 17 YOU LOOK LIKE I NEED A DRINK V alory Justin Moore 1270 +152 2.246 29 27 HOLE IN A BOTTLE M ercury Nashville Canaan Smith 1133 +71 1.931 34 3 +294 HH Most Added HH Eric Church 967 1.721 30 22 GETAWAY TRUCK BIG Label/Thirty Tigers Aaron Watson 31 19 RUNNING FOR YOU M CA Nashville Kip Moore 21 RECORD YEAR EMI Nashville 919 +34 1.418 887 +82 1.450 BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 29, 2016 | PAGE 20 OF 23 Country Indicator AUDIENCE (IN MILLIONS) THIS WEEK LAST WEEK WKS ON CHART THIS WEEK +/– THIS WEEK l 32 l 3 l3 34 l TITLE Imprint/LabelArtist 33 7 LOVIN’ LATELY B $R/New Revolution Big & Rich Feat. The story song follows a young couple being protected by forces from above. Born Martina Mariea Schiff in Sharon, Kan., the singer performed in her father’s band, The Schiffters. In 1988, she married sound engineer John McBride, who joined Garth Brooks’ production team. Accompanying her husband on the road, McBride occasionally sold merchandise for Brooks and ultimately became his opening act. McBride has scored 20 Hot Country Songs top 10s (including five No. 1s), plus five Top Country Albums leaders, including 2014’s Everlasting. She released the title track to Reckless, her 13th studio album and first on the Nash Icon label, on Feb. 26, ahead of the set’s expected arrival this spring. —JIM ASKER McBride, shown here in concert, has scored 55 career Hot Country Songs hits from 1992-2012.
