The digital advances — most of which the CMA coordinated or sanctioned — are ambitious, and they’re likely to become even more so in 2016. The CMA expects live streaming to become an even bigger part of the mix a year from now. “Digital is where the consumers are — they are either there or they are moving there,” says Whiteside. “We want to be relevant. We want to be reaching the audience and the places that they’re engaging with music.” Reaching the audience is a key piece of the puzzle for the digital partners. “Pandora’s audience kind of looks like America, so its bias is really toward what’s popular and what people want to hear,” notes Lars Murray, senior vp of Pandora’s Music Makers Group. “Country spins about 80 million times a day on Pandora, so it’s a big, big piece of what we’re doing.” The recommendation function the company is using on the LP Field video screens has an obvious connection to Pandora’s basic mission — “The discovery element is such a big part of what we’re doing,” says Murray — but the festival helps in other ways, too. Pandora will have a booth at Fan Fair X that gives visitors a chance to experience the service a little more. Additionally, it will also take the opportunity to enhance its relationships inside the industry. Pandora will have a hospitality area at the stadium, and it intends to gather content, particularly interviews and other audio, from artists, who can then have that material installed on their own Pandora channels. It’s an effort to raise the company’s perception inside the industry and to better communicate the advantages it says it offers artists. Pandora has digital research available to acts through the Artists Marketing Platform (AMP), introduced in October 2014, which could aid marketing and business decisions. Leading into the festival, Pandora presented a June 5 concert in Nashville that featured Lynch, Thompson Square and Kelsea Ballerini. Pandora did the bulk of the legwork to generate attendance, identifying users who would be most interested in the lineup. “One of the big missions here is using the scale we’ve got to connect artists to their fans,” says Murray. “Country artists and fans tend to have tighter links, from my observations, so [CMA Fest is] an opportunity for us to demonstrate how Pandora can facilitate those interactions. That’s why it’s such a great genre to be experimenting in.” Fandango’s public presence at the festival is comparatively light — it’ll introduce two videos, featuring Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker, from its new I Love Movies YouTube series — but it will gather more content for future editions from the likes of Rascal Flatts, Hunter Hayes and Jason Aldean. The McEnA still from Darius tire and Rucker pieces mark the first music entries in Rucker’s I Love the series, and Fandango never doubted that the counMovies video. try audience would respond to its online product. “Country is as broad now as NASCAR, basketball, baseball, and you have a Soldier Field Chicago, IL When the Big Revival 2015 kicked off, I knew it was gonna be special, but I never expected.... AT&T Stadium Alrlington, TX Heinz Field Pittsburgh, PA BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 8, 2015 | PAGE 4 OF 15 whole group of artists — Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan or Brad Paisley — these guys are all as mainstream as they come,” says Fandango vp marketing Adam Rockmore, who previously experienced CMA Music Fest while marketing ABC’s daytime soaps. “I wouldn’t really say that [country fans are] any more behind or any more ahead [in their digital use]. They represent probably every type of consumer out there.” If anything, as the country consumer leapfrogs to digital acceptance, fans have surprised marketers with the breadth of their interest. Though younger demos were quickest to adapt, AT&T’s U-verse product — which includes an interactive Country Deep program with music, videos, performances and interviews — has had a more even response across age groups than the company expected. “That’s what kind of jumped out at us,” says AT&T vp U-verse and video products GW Shaw. “It’s not just a small sub-segment. The whole base is growing and becoming more technically advanced and having high expectations of being able to interact with the experience as we go.” Marketers have their own expectations about the audience’s appetite for digital experiences and enhancements. It’s why the CMA got aggressive this year with virtual partnerships. “There’s tremendous opportunity out there,” says Whiteside, “and because digital is moving so quickly, I feel like you have to be really nimble and jump on these opportunities, or else you quickly get left behind.” CASH FOR CARTER CASH VID Decades before smartphone cameras existed, video cameras were rumored to be in the house when Johnny Cash proposed to June Carter in February 1968. Footage from that evening has never been seen publicly, but Johnny Cash Museum founder Bill Miller is now offering cash — a whopping $75,000 — to anyone who can produce tape from that night. The offer comes as the museum prepares to unveil a new attraction on June Carter Cash’s birthday, June 23. The Wildwood Flower Garden is named after one of The Carter Family’s signature songs. It will be located in a new patio section in the back of the museum and populated with magnolia trees and a variety of plants that Carter Cash raised in her garden at the Cash home in Hendersonville, Tenn. Shelton originally cut an uptempo version of Dylan’s “Forever Young” with Jerry Douglas on Dobro, delivering on the assignment he had received. As it turned out, the memo he was sent was incorrect — producers wanted a ballad version of the song, and they asked that he rerecord it. That second version was a massive undertaking — it uses a full orchestra and required a reported 175 audio tracks to capture all the parts. Max, which stars Robbie Amell and Lauren Graham, arrives June 26. This week’s CMA Music Festival will likely have a bunch of surprise collaborations and last-minute appearances, but fans in the right locations got their own unexpected concert experiences in the last few days. Miranda Lambert delivered a free concert on June 4 at Joe’s Bar in Chicago, hinting at the cover tunes they’d be playing with a tweet that quoted a line from The B-52’s’ “Love Shack.” Two nights later, Taylor Swift’s pop concert at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field included a drop-in by Little Big Town, who surprised the crowd with “Pontoon.” Reba McEntire will make her first appearance at the CMT Music Awards in 10 years when she performs during the show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The night also includes a collaboration between Lady Antebellum and EDM act Zedd. Additionally, Keith Urban will use the setting for the TV debut of “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” the first single from his next album. Returning visitors to Nashville might notice a few new developments on the downtown landscape when they arrive for CMA Music Festival. In addition to the George Jones Museum and a soon-to-open amphitheater, the Ryman Auditorium unveiled its $14 million renovation on June 8. And on June 11, Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley opens a new pop-up store, Tribe Kelley, in the Gulch that offers items from his new fashion line. POWER PLAYLISTS™ WKDF WSIX Nashville, Tenn. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays. BULLETS l Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week. TIES On Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first. RECURRENTS On Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks. HOT SHOT DEBUT Awarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively. MOST ADDED The total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds. MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/ PLAYS Most Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively. AIRPOWER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience. BREAKER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time. © 2015 Prometheus Global Media, LLC BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE TITLE P ublishing-Licensing Org.
