The response was remarkable. The Country Music Association put up a wall during the CMA Music Festival June 11-14 and provided pens and Post-it notes for visitors to write a few words about how music changed their lives. One by one, the board accumulated thousands of reactions. Some of them were driven by an obsession about a particular artist — Taylor Swift, Hunter Hayes or Luke Bryan, for example — but others went straight to the value of music as a transformative force: Music is a heart with lyrics. Therapy to get through life! Music keeps me going when I feel like giving up. “Every day I would go and check it,” says CMA CEO Sarah Trahern. “It started off as one thing, to be an interactive activity to keep people busy, and it ended up — I’m going to get tearyeyed over this — it ended up saying to me what the magic of Music Fest is all about, which is the interaction between people and music on all sorts of different levels.” Some levels of music’s value were easily described by fans: Fun. Dance party!! Escape from reality. Others were much more poignant: Music is a language that speaks more than any spoken language. Where words fail, music speaks. Another response cleverly used two Post-it notes to complete a heart: Music was playing when we first met. The festival can be brutal on the people who work it — it’s hot and sticky, it’s difficult to navigate through the tens of thousands of bodies, and schedules tend to be packed. Yet in the middle of the frenzy, the same Post-its that people affix to their computer screens as a reminder about mundane deadlines suddenly became a reminder to workers who discovered the board about the purpose behind their job. Plenty of musicians would agree with that latter assessment. Bruce Springsteen has often used his concerts to evangelize about the power of a rock’n’roll song to change a life. Producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Brothers Osborne) doesn’t see himself as a religious person, but he converted a church into a recording studio, and he sees music as an other-worldly glue. “People who make music are messing with vibration, and that’s way more higher a calling than any minister or any spoken Country UPDATE THE COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTRY’S MUST-HAVE SOURCE FOR NEWS, ANALYSIS AND CHART INFO EVERY MONDAY AND THURSDAY Get your message front and center with top country radio programmers and other key music influencers TO ADVERTISE, CONTACT: Lee Ann Photoglo, 615-376-7931, [email protected] BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 22, 2015 | PAGE 2 OF 14 word or theology,” said Joyce in early 2014. “We speak in a language, we don’t even know what it is. We’re shaping music vibrations to make somebody feel sad or happy. That’s like, incredible. That would be way more God’s language, or whatever-you-want-to-call-it language, than some church.” In that way, Keith Urban — whose new single is the aptly titled “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16” — sees music as a means for exploring spirituality and the meaning of life. “It’s, for me, what it’s intended for,” he says. “I like to be able to make my own relationship to that that I believe in.” Spirituality for Dummies defines a spiritual life as one that combines love and respect for God, for the self and for others. Music operates with the same set of connectors. The origination of melody remains a mystery — “It’s a gift from God,” said Brian Wilson in 2002. It’s an expression of one person’s internal creative world, and when it works, it can motivate a mass of people to sing an entire chorus back to an artist on a stage. “I think it’s spiritual,” says Miranda Lambert. “It’s something that brings people together. I look out at my shows and I think, ‘All these people from all different walks of life, all kinds of ages and sizes and everything else, and the one thing that’s bringing us all here is music that’s moved them in some way.’ ” Curb artist Ruthie Collins met with a few central California radio executives when she played Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. The camera caught Urban’s wife, Nicole Kidman, singing along during part of the performance, and that simple image was hugely impactful to “John Cougar” co-writer Shane McAnally. “I texted Keith after that and said, ‘You know, whatever happens with this song, what just happened on my TV was enough,’ ” notes McAnally. “It’s the whole reason that we do this, because it is about that connection. That [camera shot] was about a connection of two people, but that’s just a great metaphor for the connection that we all feel through music, and I really was moved by it.” The Post-it note wall may become a metaphor on its own. The CMA captured the entire structure and all the individual messages on camera, and Trahern is thinking about blowing up the image and putting it on display at the office as a reminder to the staff about what makes the music business unique. She’s likewise mulling the idea of doing additional Post-it walls backstage at the awards or at the annual CMA Country Christmas taping to serve as a reminder that behind the tedium of schedules, industry politics and impersonal technology, it’s still possible for even the most cynical, jaded country music veteran to make a difference with their life’s vocation. “It’s great to stop and think for a moment about why we get to do this,” suggests Trahern. “It really is a blessing and a responsibility, and it’s something much bigger than a 9-to-5 business.” BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 22, 2015 | PAGE 4 OF 14 MUSGRAVES: ALYSSE GAFKJEN and more recently has announced “celebrity resurrection” of Liberace and Buddy Holly. HODGES: GETTY IMAGES GOOD WORKS For the sixth year, the Academy of Country Music is welcoming a handful of Nashville’s creative talents to the ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp, a program that helps the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center study individuals with Williams syndrome in a concentrated way. This year’s edition featured “Lose My Mind” songwriters Ross Copperman and Heather Morgan leading the campers as they wrote a song from start to finish on June 19. Others scheduled to participate through June 23 include Hunter Hayes, Scotty McCreery, the Swon Brothers and JT Hodges. Williams syndrome is a genetic condition that often results in a trusting lack of borders in personal interactions and a propensity for musical expression. Music Camp participants also got to experience a recording studio and the Bluebird Café, and will perform with Hayes on the Grand Ole Opry on June 23. JT Hodges took part in the ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp on June 20 as the participants, all diagnosed with Williams syndrome, learned to line dance at Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon. From left are Music Camp founder Lori Lytle, ACM Lifting Lives manager Hannah Martin, Hodges and ACM executive vp/managing director Tiffany Moon. ON THE CHARTS BALLERINI: JEREMY RYAN Kelsea Ballerini First Female To Lead With Debut Single Since 2006 Kelsea Ballerini scores the first debut No. 1 by a woman on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 4) in more than nine years, as “Love Me Like You Mean It” (Black River) rises 2-1 in its 38th week. The song tops the chart as the Greatest Gainer with a 12 percent increase to 47.1 million audience impressions in the week ending June 21, according to Nielsen Music. “Love” marks the first career-opening Country Airplay No. 1 by a female artist since Carrie Underwood arrived with her first single officially promoted to country radio, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which began a six-week reign on the chart dated Jan. 21, 2006. (Underwood had first charted two non-promoted entries that failed to rise higher than No. 50 on the Country Airplay chart in the wake of her winning the 2005 season of Fox’s American Idol.) “I’ve been writing songs since I was 12 years old, and so many times throughout this journey I’ve wondered if I was good at it or if this is what I was supposed to do,” Ballerini tells Billboard exclusively. “To see it work, and as early like it has, is so reassuring that this is what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m so thankful that radio has given me a chance. It is incredibly humbling.” Having “Love” reach No. 1 “is a culmination of so many people’s outstanding efforts,” adds Black River CEO Gordon Kerr. Like Ballerini, Black River celebrates its first Country Airplay No. 1. “It’s a huge day for us as an independent record label. I’m incredibly proud of Kelsea. So many people have embraced us and even gone out on a limb to support us. I’m thankful they took a chance on a new artist, and I’m glad that we’ve proven that to be a good risk.” Here’s a look at the elite women to take a debut country single to No. 1 (as a lead artist) on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, dating to the tally’s Jan. 20, 1990 launch: “Love Me Like You Mean It,” Ballerini, July 4, 2015 (one week to date); “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” Underwood, Jan. 21, 2006 (six); “Redneck Woman,” Gretchen Wilson, May 29, 2004 (five); “What I Really Meant to Say,” Cyndi Thompson, Sept. 22, 2001 (three); “There Is No Arizona,” Jamie O’Neal, Feb. 17, 2001 (one); “Strawberry Wine,” Deana Carter, Nov. 23, 1996 (two); “Wild One,” Faith Hill, Jan. 1, 1994 (four); “She Is His Only Need,” Wynonna, April 11, 1992 (one; her first solo single apart from The Judds); and “She’s in Love With the Boy,” Trisha Yearwood, Aug. 3, 1991 (two). Notably, Ballerini’s “Love” is the first debut No. 1 by a woman (as a lead) on an independent label. It’s the first leader by a woman on an indie at all since Taylor Swift ruled with “Ours,” on Big Machine, on the March 31, 2012 chart. As previously reported, as “Love” was scaling the Country Airplay’s top 30, it received a high-profile push from Swift, who endorsed it on Twitter on March 9. More superlatives surrounding Ballerini’s debut Country Airplay No. 1: It marks the first No. 1 by a woman in a lead BALLERINI role since Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert’s “We Were Us” topped the Dec. 7, 2013 chart. It’s the first No. 1 by a female unaccompanied by a male artist since Underwood’s “Blown Away” stormed to No. 1 for two weeks beginning Oct. 27, 2012. Ballerini’s “Love” also completes the steadiest trip to No. 1 on Country Airplay for a song by a woman with lead billing. It passes the 35-week ascent of Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” (Nov. 11, 2006). This column was written by Billboard co-director of charts Gary Trust (gary. [email protected]). BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 22, 2015 | PAGE 6 OF 14 ON THIS DATE IN COUNTRY MUSIC Surprise! Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were not on the announced schedule for the Grand Ole Opry this past weekend, but that didn’t stop them from dropping by the WSM-AM Nashville show. The couple, who have hinted at prospects that they might finally put together a duets album, combined voices on four songs during the June 19 broadcast, beginning with her debut single, “She’s in Love With the Boy.” They also covered three country duets that were made famous during the 1970s: “After the Fire Is Gone” (Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn, 1971), “I Don’t Want to Have to Marry You” (Jim Ed Brown & Helen Cornelius, 1976) and “Golden Ring” (George Jones & Tammy Wynette, 1976). YEARWOOD, and BROOKS Surprise II! When Kenny Chesney and Jason Aldean rolled into Green Bay’s Lambeau Field on June 20, concert advertisements promised Brantley Gilbert and Cole Swindell as opening acts. What they didn’t mention was the bonus: Grace Potter, who popped in unannounced to sing “Wild Child” and “You and Tequila” with Chesney. Potter turned 32 the same day, and she was serenaded with a round of “Happy Birthday” from 53,000 people. One other guest during the show: Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who made an onstage appearance during Chesney’s football ballad “The Boys of Fall.” Dolly Parton will deliver her first Nashville concert in a dozen years on July 31 when she plays the annual Dustin Wells Foundation Gift of Music benefit for the W.O. Smith Music School. The show takes place at the Ryman Auditorium, the same venue where Parton was officially welcomed as a Grand Ole Opry member on Jan. 4, 1969. The concert sold out the same day tickets went on sale. After making his first national connection with the song “Small Town USA,” Justin Moore is now being counted on to help a regional bank connect with the general public. Moore was announced as a spokesman for Simmons Bank during the institution’s annual shareholders meeting in Pine Bluff, Ark. That gathering is 39 miles from Moore’s hometown: Poyen, Ark. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays. BULLETS l Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week. TIES On Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first. RECURRENTS On Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks. HOT SHOT DEBUT Awarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively. MOST ADDED The total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds. MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/ PLAYS Most Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively. AIRPOWER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience. BREAKER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time. © 2015 Prometheus Global Media, LLC BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE TITLE P ublishing-Licensing Org.
