American Vaulting Association 2007 Welcome to the AVA Annual Meeting 2007,..., Texas Style! The origin of the word Texas is derived from the Caddoan Indian expression tavshas, meaning "allies" or "friends." The Caddo people are some of the earliest native inhabitants of what is now known as the Lone Star State. Today, Texas proudly declares Friendship as the state motto, so it seems fitting that all of you avid friends of vaulting have gathered here for our first ever conference in this celebrated part of the American West. With the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games only three years and three states away, this makes our 2007 Annual Meeting, Texas Style, a crossroads in our own great and expanding history. Bigger Than Ever! Texans proudly maintain that everything is bigger and better in what is often called The Banner State, and our meeting organizers, Region IV Supervisor Rosie Brown and V.P Membership Sheri Benjamin, have done a banner job to live up to that claim. The jam-packed schedule of meetings, along with numerous educational opportunities is the biggest program ever planned for any AVA annual meeting! This conference schedule truly offers something for everyone to contribute to and benefit from: * Coach and Longeurs Discussion Group: Focus on Horse/Horse Score Countdown to WEG Kentucky 2010: Horses, Horses, Horses! Historical Overview of Dressage and Its Relationship to the Vaulting Horse How to Market Your Vaulting Club: 25 Way to Grow Your Organization Through the Eyes of the Vaulter: Panel Discussion on our Equine Partners Vaulting Club Managers/Officers Discussion Group * Intro to Vaulting Clinic for New/Prospective Coaches * Therapeutic Vaulting Clinic * Vaulter Clinics with Women's World Champion Megan Benjamin * * * * * Cheers for Years Of Service Our Awards Committee headed by talented artist Jeannie Beattie and coordinator extraordinaire Carol Beutler, has important recognitions and honors in store for us. Recognizing those who have served the vaulting world so well over the years, helps to connect us to our illustrious past and insures that we can build on their legacy for even greater growth and excellence in our future. This potpourri of opportunities ensures that everyone attending will have a chance to share their valuable experience and insights and then leave with fresh ideas and inspiration for the coming years. As leaders and friends of our sport, we are here to share the rewarding and exciting work of developing and expanding our horizons. So, thank you all for coming! Not only are the eyes of Texas upon us, but more importantly the eyes of the entire vaulting world! Y'all have a good time! Vault On! Annual Report: If each of our members (Board included) would hand in 5 or 6 past vaulter's addresses we could get a source of alumni. We need name and address of past vaulters to see if they are interested in becoming part of our Alumni Membership. We need to think of someway to spread our alumni group, Circle of Friends, across the U.S.; now most are from the west coast. Each Region can work as a gathering source. Any ideas are welcome. This year we had a wine and cheese event at the Garrod Farms Spring Classic in Saratoga, California and we also put on the Horse Schooling at Osierlea in San Juan Bautista, California. We get together often and have some good times and/un. Jeannie will stay on as a member of the committee and be responsible for most of the same activities as she has had in the past. Toni Amoroso has done an excellent job of compiling all of the scores from recognized competitions to determine our High Point Award recipients. It is a big job and I want to thank her for her continued service. This is the second year that we have been giving individual plaques to those that receive perpetual trophies. This year those plaques will be given out at the awards banquet at the annual meeting. We still are in need of some cases from some of our perpetual trophies and would appreciate anyone who knows of a source that will not be too expensive. We have retired the former Silver Women's Champion trophy and have acquired a new one. Katie Haynie 11 American Vaulting Association 2007 waited patiently until June to receive the trophy with her name already engraved on it. We will be discussing the disposition of retired trophies and other procedures. This year the USEF asked all of its affiliate organizations to participate in the USEF Sportsman Charter Award and send in a nomination from the American Vaulting Association. We have now formed the Youth Recognition Committee. Jan Weber is the chair of this committee and currently has Stephanie Siemens, Rosie Brown, Kendall Edmunds, Jeannie Beattie, and Carol Beutler serving on her committee. The RVC is conducted by two CHA RVC Clinicians, whose job it is to evaluate the coaching skills of each participant and offer constructive advice for a safe and effective vaulting program. RVC clinics will be held at sites approved for hosting by the CHA program Director, Julie Goodnight, and in addition to the regular host site requirements; the host site needs to offer safe and suitable vaulting areas, equipment and horse, as stated in the American Vaulting Association (AVA) Camps and Club Manual. There are two grant periods - Spring and Fall. The due date for the grants are March 31 st and September10th. Notice to everyone, help in passing the word, that small amounts of money are available to individuals, clubs and regions that need a financial boast to spark interest or fund a function to spread the word of vaulting. Since the inception of this committee in 1995, $28100 of grants has been awarded. $2400 of this was a special allotment by the AVA Board for barrels to Regions. For information contact Yossi Martonovich 16 American Vaulting Association 2007 INSURANCE COMMITTEE Reports to Executive VP Chair: Jan Weber Members: Bill Brown, Kelley Holly Annual Report: The Committee has been hard at work. We successfully renegotiated insurance coverage for the association with Specialty Program Insurers. We again can offer event day coverage for educational and competition event days with our policy as the umbrella. Competition day coverage is available for 195.00 per competition day with no additional charge for set up and tear down days. This coverage will again cover AVA recognized competitions and barrel fests for this fee. We also renegotiated our Board of Directors Errors and Omissions policy, also with Specialty Program Insurers. We have worked with a group Canadian Vaulting Advocates fighting legislation that would classify vaulters and riders and require all vaulters to wear helmets. This would have significant negative implications for their ability to continue to train world class athletes in our sport. It would also result in the loss of many recreational vaulting programs just as the numbers of programs in Canada have begun to grow. (This Canadians with meet with legislators the week of February 2 - after this writing -, and we hope to have information on the outcome for you at the meeting). Note that three years ago we also helped the Australians fight similar legislation. The vaulters prevailed with an exclusion and we hope for the same outcome for the Canadians. We continue to try to educate underwriters about the safety of our sport. We hope continue to have hope that our market opportunities will expand and be even more available for trainers and clubs in the future. There is still much to accomplish, but we are pleased with our progress so far. It is hard to be patient on such an important topic, but we must continue to accept the responsibility to be proactive and to educating others with an accurate vision of the risk in our sport. Leaving it to the imagination of underwriters has been a serious detriment to our perception by the insurance community. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMITTEE Reports to VP Competitions Chair: Patti Littmann Members: Jan Weber Purpose: To plan, organize and implement an annual national championship event. NATIONAL OFFICE MANAGER Reports to Executive VP Manager: Craig Coburn NORTH AMERICAN HANDICAP RIDERS ASSOCIATION (NAHRA) LIAISON Reports to VP Education Liaison: Rachel Markels-Webber 17 American Vaulting Association 2007 NOMINATING COMMITTEE Reports to Secretary Chair: Members: (appointed annually, must be regionally diverse) Purpose: To seek sufficient nominations each spring to allow elections for the AVA Board of Directors, Officers, and Regional Supervisors. PUBLICATIONS COORDINATOR Reports to VP Education Coordinator: Jan Weber Annual Report: Our publications list continues to offer diverse list of resources for vaulters and coaches in our sport. All publications have been added to the vaulting store on the AVA website thanks to Rosie Brown! The Education Committee has expanded our offerings this year with a new resource developed by Anna Kahl de la Motte. It's a great activity kit to "switch up" your usual vaulting practice and reinforce those vaulting musts! If you have a publication or audio-visual material you think would be a great addition to the offerings that we sell please contact: Noel Martonovich, Education Committee Chair PUBLICITY COMMITTEE Reports to VP Development Chair: Lynn Stevens Members: Sandy Nance, Star Hughes Purpose: To promote the sport of vaulting, vaulting activities, and the AVA through media relations including publicity to target specific audiences and annual events. The Lifetime Achievement Award was initiated last year. Last year at the Annual Meeting, Marianne Rose was the recipient and at Nationals, the award was given to Joy Coburn. This award is selected by our President Nancy Stevens-Brown and she has done a magnificent job with the selection of the award that is given and the individual who so deserves. REGIONS COMMITTEE Reports to VP Membership Chair: Sheri Benjamin Members: Connie Geisler, Teresa Keville, Penny Maydak, Rosie Brown, Jan Weber, Karen Rach Purpose: To provide a forum where regional supervisors can exchange ideas, discuss challenges, share successes, and support each other in their regional roles. Region IV report Submitted by Rosie Brown 2007 is a big year for Region IV. October 2006-June 2007 will be the first season in which we will hold 3 AVA recognized events to count towards Zone Awards. We will be helping to hold the Annual Meeting in the DFW area. Nationals will be in Denver in August so we sure do have our hands full. And the vaulting camp in Nebraska will be held for the second year in a row. Region IV is not quite as "in the now" as it would like to be, so for this year we will be getting with the times. We will get our bylaws written and our website updated. We just added a regional secretary to help the board get action items done. Doubling as the voice of vaulting in Texas, I am hoping to continue to gain vaulting some exposure. I will be working with dressage associations, 4-H groups and pony club chapters to get their members involved in vaulting as a method of training better riders, or as a sport in itself. I will be seeking out more venues for the AVA booth to be seen and man the booth. The first run at this will be at the San Antonio Rodeo February 11 tho I hope to hit up more rodeos and large jumper and dressage shows during the year. Region IX Report Submitted By Jan Weber 2006 was another great year in Region IX. We held yet another Region IX Championships at Penn State University. Vaulters and their families had a great opportunity to visit a great school with an AG tradition and equestrian programming in our region. Our next Championships will be July 23-24, 2007 at Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA We hosted three USEF competitions within the region and more east coast vaulters continue to qualify on the USEF ranking list We held our second annual Spirit of Vaulting conference in VA, with Katie Flannagan and her crew taking on a lions share of the planning and implementation. It was well attended and continues another proud tradition for our region. Our next Spirit of Vaulting will be October 519 American Vaulting Association 2007 7, at Advantage Ranch hosted by the Dyer family in Blacksburg, VA and without the help of Kim Beisecker -- this program may not have happened in 2007. We were able to re-establish the high points awards at the regional level, thanks to Charlie Bittenbring! Each of our High Point Champions and Reserve Champions received an engraved commemorative plaque. Our website (www.avaregionix.org)looksgreatandhashadmanyupdatesthankstoSanfordPriceO·Brien Our yahoo forum continues to be an effective way to share ideas and information thanks to Rick VanVranken. Newly developed "Welcome Packet" for new clubs in Region IX thanks to Sanford Price-O'Brien. Our success has enabled us to initiate a Region IX grants program (Chair, Stephanie Siemens) and to continue grants for the support of Region IX members who sit on the AVA Board of Directors. Region IX is going strong and creating new traditions and sustaining others. With the energy donated by so many from such a huge geographic challenges, we continue to find out how much we can make happen for our Region IX vaulters. Creating opportunities for improvement and success. I've been very lucky to be the Regional Supervisor in Region IX for the past four years. I've made many new friends and have realized that the possibilities for our vaulters are limited only by our imaginations and the number of dedicated volunteers that we can find to MAKE IT HAPPEN! SAFETY COORDINATOR Reports to Vice President of Education Coordinator: Kim Deaver 2004 Report In 2003 the AVA changed the injury reporting period. In previous years the reporting period was the calendar year. The reporting period now coincides with the AVA's fiscal year running from October- September. The change in reporting periods was made in hopes of getting more clubs to send in their reports with early club registration, which begins in the fall. This created an overlap in reporting periods for the 2003-2004 year. Injuries and contact hours that occurred between October 2003 and December 31, 2003 were included with the 2003 data. The data in this report only reflects the injuries and contact hours that occurred between January 2004 and September 2004. In the 2003-2004 reporting period fifty clubs reported 1107 vaulters (486 AVA registered & 621 unregistered) had 279946 contact hours of vaulting practice. This number does not include 20 American Vaulting Association 2007 all competitions, demonstrations, clinics, camps, recreational vaulting, therapeutic vaulting, and AVA affiliates. There were 19 injuries and one incidence of heat illness reported in 2003-2004. Of these injuries 85% (17) occurred while vaulting. Of the injuries that occurred while vaulting 70% (14) occurred on the horse. The other 10 % (2) occurred on the barre1.l5% (3) occurred during compulsories, 70% (14) during freestyle 65% (13) during individual freestyle and 5% (1) during team freestyle . . There were no reported concussions in 2003-2004. Of the injuries, 75% (15) were seen by a physician, 15% (3) resulted in the vaulter having surgery. For 10% (2) of the injuries no practice time was missed, 5% (1) resulted in the vaulter missing up to 1 week of practice, 25% (5) resulted in 2-3 weeks of missed practice, .5% (1) resulted in 4 weeks of missed practice, and 40% (8) resulted in more than 4 weeks of missed practice with one injury resulting in the end of that vaulter's vaulting career. Of the injured vaulters 15% (3) were gold medalists, 25% (5) were silver medalists, 25% (5) were bronze medalists, 20% (4) were beginning canter or copper vaulters, 10% (2) were trot medalists. None of the vaulters were 10 years old or younger, 20% (4) were 11-13 years old, 65 % (13) were 14-18 years old, and 10% (2) were over 18 years old. In the 2003-2004 reporting period there was a slight increase (3) in the number of injuries reported as compared to 2003. The types of injuries have remained similar over the past six years, with ankle injuries being the most commonly reported injury. 2005 Report In the 2004-2005 reporting period forty-nine clubs reported 1033 vaulters (525 AVA registered & 508 unregistered) had 75570167 contact hours of vaulting practice. In the 2004-2005 reporting period there was a decrease (8) in the number of injuries reported as compared to 2003-2004. During this reporting period fractures were the most commonly reported injury. Over the past seven years ankle sprains were the most commonly reported injury. This reporting period also marks the first reported catastrophic injury for the American Vaulting Association. This injury was a cervical fracture that resulted in paralysis for that vaulter. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE Reports to Executive VP Chair: Sue Detol Members: Craig Coburn, Jennifer Williams, Lynne Owens, Jeff Moore, Emma Drinker, Toni Amoroso, Deborah Harrison Purpose: To train and license judges for the AVA and USEF. To keep AVA vaulting rules updated and aligned with USEF and FE! rules when possible. Annual Report: The AVA Technical Committee was quite active in 2006. We planned and conducted five training sessions for judges and apprentice judges, including the Annual Judges Forum, which was a two-day event open to the public. Our Annual Forum was held at Sydney Frankel's home, and was well-attended by 34 participants. The Pacific Coast Club offered topnotch hospitality - Susan Frankel catered our lunches and snacks - Sydney opened her beautiful home to us - and the entire group gave selflessly of their time and allowed us to "use" several of their horses for the equestrian portion of our program. It was truly a wonderful show of sportsmanship and support for our program Our guest speaker was Tracey Lert, a nationally-known dressage competitor, trainer, instructor and "s" dressage judge. Adrienne Stang (FEI "0") and Suzanne Detol (FE! "0") were the organizers and directors of the Forum this year. The Forum included presentations by Ms. Stang, Ms. Detol, Deborah P. Harrison, DVM (FEI "C") and Toni Amoroso (AVA "R"). Megan Benjamin, 2006 Womens World Champion, also gave us a brief presentation and a chance to ask her questions about her fantastic accomplishments at WEG. We attempted to conduct our training sessions in a variety of locations this year. Our first training session of the year was conducted ringside at a barrel competition in Northern California (Region II); the second was at Annual Meeting 2006 (Region IX); one was held in southern California (Region I) and the final one for Did you know? The youngest vaulter to get a Gold Medal was Syndey Stang, (you guessed it Adrienne's daughter) who earned her medal at the age of 12! 22 American Vaulting Association 2007 the year was held in Oregon, (Region Ill). The Oregon training was conducted at DevonWood Equestrian Centre by their chief trainer, Teri Emrich. Teri is a USDF associate instructor and USDF silver medalist. Her students presented several different breeds of horses at different stages of training, different canters, different abilities, different problems. Each horse had different colored leg wraps on their diagonal pair of legs, which made the purity of their gaits extremely easy to see. We also participated in the "Through the Eyes of the Judge" program that was held at our National Championships in 2006. This is a wonderful program that opens up communication between the membership and the judges. I believe that all ofthe judges enjoy the time we can spend in these sessions. I have received quite a bit of positive feedback from the membership also, so hopefully this is a program that will continue to be offered by the AVA Education Committee. We welcomed one new apprentice judge last year, Kendel Edmunds, from Washington. Kendel is a past U.S. Womens Gold Champion; has been an apprentice judge in the past, and is a very welcome addition to our program. We have received four applications to enter the program in 2007. This interest definitely bodes well for our judging program in the future. TRADE SHOWS / EXHIBITS COORDINATOR Reports to VP Development Coordinator: Jan Weber Purpose: To educate the general public on the benefits of vaulting. Annual Report: We never know where most effective opportunities to increase the visibility of our sport might be. The key is to find cost effective and high visibility opportunities! The Friendship Team wouldn't exist without the generosity of our many silver + vaulters who pay their way and our such incredible ambassadors for us. In April, The Friendship Vaulting Team did great demos at Kentucky Horse Park, Parade of Breeds during the Rolex last year. Thank you Katie Haynie, Cate Thomas, Jesse Cooper, Greta Shryock and the Mt. Tabor exchange student from Germany,. Last but not least their incredible coach and longuer, Lucinda Faulkner. The team also did an very well received demonstration at the North American Young Riders Championships in Lexington, VA. They performed for hundreds who were there for the vaulting and the reining exhibitions. Reining will be the first non-olympic discipline to join the Young Riders competition next year. The USEF High Performance Committee has developed a subcommittee to set into place the development of procedures and standards so that vaulting can also be added to this incredible event. Many special thanks to coach and longeur, Lucinda Faulkner and her vaulters: Greta Shryock, Jesse Cooper, Rachel Rearick, Katie Gieschen, Katie Haynie and Hannah Horsman. You guys are the best! The booth traveled with the TEAM and was also seen at the AYHC annual symposium this year. We are also grateful to the American Horse Publications for displaying our brochures in their booth in exchange for some help in the booth! Several regions requested use of the booth for their events. Please know that the booth is available to events that you might be attending.
