On behalf of the Doors Open Burlington Organizing Committee, welcome to
Doors Open Burlington 2013!
We are very pleased and excited to showcase 14 sites that are representative
of the people, the buildings, and events that have defined our community's
history and development.
Start your day in downtown Burlington by visiting The Masonic Lodge; St
Luke's Anglican Church, the first Anglican church in Burlington; Joseph Brant
Museum where you can enjoy "Mapping Burlington: The View from Here"
or "Burlington Heroes: Honouring 200 Years of Our Military Heritage 18122012"; and, attend the unveiling of the City's interpretative panel celebrating
the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Ontario which took place during
the War of 1812-1814. Travel to north Burlington and see the Lowville School
House with displays about what it was like to attend school in the early 1900s.
Enjoy a guided walking tour of our downtown areas and learn about the
architecture and history of the buildings that you pass every day.
Do also visit the other Burlington sites that are open this weekend for Culture
Days activities! For further details see www.burlington.ca/culturedays.
Entrance to all sites is FREE! Enjoy the displays, demonstrations and exhibits
as you explore Burlington's many cultural venues. Doors Open Burlington
2013 volunteers will be on hand to greet and welcome you throughout your
travels.

Message from Mayor Rick Goldring
Doors Open Burlington
Culture is an enormous part of our lives and an enormous part of any vital community. Our cultural and
heritage resources give us an identity that is unique and all our own. They speak to the character and
personality of Burlington and its people.
Doors Open Burlington provides the public with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Burlington’s
special cultural and heritage assets by making them accessible to all. A broad range of venues open
their doors and provide visitors and residents alike with a unique educational and informative
experience. This initiative also provides many volunteer opportunities for local residents.
This year, the Doors Open Burlington will align with our Cultural Days during the last weekend in
September. During the first three years of Doors Open Burlington, the City hosted over 13,000 visits
and the Committee is looking forward to adding many more to that number this year.
Doors Open Burlington would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of local businesses

Message from Regional Chair Gary Carr
Every year, from April to October, residents and visitors are
invited to discover heritage, natural and cultural resources
through Doors Open Ontario, recognized as one of the Top
100 Ontario Festivals. This year, the City of Burlington and
the Doors Open Organizing Committee will host the 2013
Burlington Doors Open event on Saturday, September 28,
2013.
This highly successful event is unique in that many of the
participating sites are normally closed to the public and
admission is free. Doors Open events in Burlington have
attracted 14,000 visitors over the past few years, 4,500 in
2011 alone, from both the local community as well as out-oftown visitors.
Participating in Doors Open is a wonderful way to celebrate our heritage, build
partnerships and support tourism in Halton. This initiative underscores the importance
of both keeping our stories alive for today’s audiences and preserving these heritage
treasures for future generations.
On behalf of Regional Council, I would like to thank the many volunteers, sponsors and
community partners who help make Doors Open such a successful event year after
year. Thanks to your efforts, Halton’s natural and culture heritage continues to thrive
and Halton remains a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

Unveiling of the Battle of Lake
Ontario Interpretative Panel
Burlington will honour the 200th anniversary of the Battle of
Lake Ontario which took place during the War of 1812-1814.
The time for the ceremony will be announced and on the Doors
Open Burlington website in September.
Burlington Art Centre
Founded in 1978, BAC is the
seventh largest public art
gallery in Ontario. Its fully
equipped studios are home
to seven very active artist
and artisan guilds. BAC is
welcoming anyone interested
in exploring art.

Freeman Station
Freeman Station is a historic 1906 railway station that was
saved from demolition and relocated to a temporary home at
the Central Fire Station on Fairview St. Come and view a
display with a scale replica at City Hall.

Gingerbread House Gardens
The Burlington Gingerbread House
is a charming historical home built
by A.B. Coleman in 1893, situated
in the heart of Burlington. Visit
the beautiful Victorian garden and
revel in the architectural details.

Heritage Burlington Walking Tours
These self-guided or guided tours in Burlington’s picturesque
downtown core provide an opportunity to explore some of
Burlington’s most intriguing buildings and historic pathways.
Tours commence from Civic Square (City Hall) and can be
customized to fit any group size, abilities and timelines.
Joseph Brant Museum
Burlington’s community museum is a replica of the original
homestead of Joseph Brant (1742-1807). In 1798, the Mohawk
and British captain was granted 3,450 acres at the ‘head-ofthe-lake’ (Burlington Bay) by King George III.

Masonic Lodge
Take this rare opportunity to tour
inside the Burlington Masonic
Lodge which is rarely open to
the public. The Masons are the
world's oldest and largest fraternal
organization. There are more than
47,000 masons in Ontario.

St. Luke’s Anglican Church
As the oldest church in Burlington,
The Parish Church of St. Luke
has been a place of worship for
Anglicans since 1834. The land
was given to Chief Joseph Brant
for services
rendered during
the American Revolution. His
daughter later donated the land
for church use.

Kilbride Fire Hall
Burlington’s only fire station manned solely by volunteers, the
Kilbride Fire Hall is home to the antique 1920 REO fire truck,
Tanker 305, and a 2002 IHC 7400 Crimson, which may be the
only Crimson in Canada.
Lowville School House
Located in Lowville Park, across
from the Lowville Bistro, this oneroom schoolhouse was built in
1889. The village got its name
from being the lowest point on
the road between Guelph and
Lake Ontario. Take this special
opportunity to reminisce what
it would have been like to be a
student in the early 1900s

Lowville United Church
The present church was built in
1872. The Lowville Circuit, which
included Lowville, Davidson’s,
Kilbride,
Salem,
Bethesda,
and Mountain Churches was
established in 1875. It is the
only New Connexion Church in
existence today.

Nelson United Church
In 1830 a frame church with a gallery was built which served
until the present stone church was built in 1859. The land for
the cemetery was donated by T. R. Springer in 1861. The large
stone "Springer House" still stands just west of the Church.

Thinkspot in the Walt Rickli
Sculpture Garden
Located near Lowville Park, THINKSPOT is a place for
groups of people to get away and think. The Sculpture Garden
features an ongoing rotation of Walt Rickli’s hand carved
water sculptures, abstract and realistic stone sculptures.
