The College of Coastal Georgia: Dreams Rising 2020 VISION College of Coastal Georgia unveils a multi-year plan for a bold new campus. College of Coastal Georgia and its Foundation unveiled a comprehensive strategic plan for the College to bustle with over 5,000 students and offer on-campus housing for at least 900 in the next decade. Created by the Strategic Master Planning Committee comprised of community members, Trustees, students, faculty and staff, the plan serves as the blueprint for the institution’s future. The Plan takes the college from its current state as an emerging four-year institution, with an enrollment of over 3,000, to an established college with extensive academic programs and student life. “We want to create a new, exciting and environmentally appropriate look on our campus.” – Dr. Valerie Hepburn, President, College of Coastal Georgia By 2015, the master plan calls for a new academic building, a new student center, a fine and performing arts building, and several units of student housing. Currently, more than 90 percent of the College’s students are from five area counties. By 2020 the master plan sets a goal of attaining 45 percent of students from beyond the region. Health and Science Building. In August 2009, Trustees, faculty, staff and students welcomed Chancellor Erroll B. Davis, Jr. and community leaders to campus to break ground on the Health and Science Building, which will house nearly 50,000 square feet of instructional and laboratory space. These projects were identified as key priorities in the College’s strategic master plan, and the Regents have given full support to these investments that are so necessary to make this campus a destination institution.” – Regent James A. Bishop At its meeting on September 9, 2009, the Board of Regents authorized five new projects to be financed through the Georgia Higher Education Finance Authority (GHEFA). One of the top projects was securing the green light for construction of a new campus student center and student housing to accommodate 350 students. The two projects are estimated to cost at least $25 million. Funding will be secured through housing rentals, student fees and auxiliary revenues. S C H O L A R S H I P S , AWA R D S A N D P R O G R A M S With the College’s growth comes additional needs for student support and scholarships. Scholarships support students in need and allow the College to recruit the best and brightest from across Georgia. The Foundation awarded 166 scholarships totaling $114, 564 in 2009. The Foundation has more than 40 types of scholarships available and $200,000 to offer for the next academic year. However, with decreasing state support and increasing student costs, the need for additional support is also on the rise. With the help of generous contributors, the Foundation has established the Building Our Academic Talent (BOAT) scholarship to provide financial assistance for high-achieving students who will become academic leaders on campus. The Student Academic Incentive Link (SAIL) Grant is awarded to students who demonstrate promise but who are not HOPE Scholarship eligible. A number of community members have stepped forward to help build the College by establishing scholarships, awards and programs. Without support such as theirs, the expansion of the College as a four-year baccalaureate degree-granting institution would not be possible. James Greer Brown and Family. The family of John Hunt established the John Hunt Entrepreneurial Scholarship to support students who have demonstrated servant leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit. In honor of George McAllister Dallas (John) Hunt, III, this scholarship serves to continue the family’s culture of philanthropy Mary and Jack Dinos. Among their vast contributions to University System of Georgia institutions, Mary and Jack Dinos have endowed educational scholarships at the College of Coastal Georgia. The Hites-Dinos Endowed Scholarships provide support for students transferring from a two-year degree program who plan to enroll in a baccalaureate degree program. In November 2009, the Mary and Jack Dinos Golf Scholarship was established, which serves as a catalyst to the dynamic growth of the College’s athletic programs, as programs expand from the existing two currently in place to thirteen over the next five years.
