Temple Hillel Herald AWARD WINNING BULLETIN Winners of United Synagogue Awards Competition If I am not for myself, who is for me? If I care only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? Omer/Sivan 5773 May/June 2013 Temple Hillel cordially invites you to attend its Fifty-eighth Anniversary Journal Dinner Dance in honor of Robin & David Laurentz Sunday, June 9, 2013 The Grand Ballroom of Temple Hillel Inside this issue: Calendar 14 President’s Message 3 Rabbi’s Message 2 Religious School Parents Association 8-9 Sabbath/ Holiday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah Services 12 Sunshine 16 Donations Yahrzeit 20 22 RABBI’S ARTICLE This is the time of the year for graduations. To all of our graduates, their parents and grandparents I extend a hearty Mazal Tov! On May 15th and 16th we will all take part in a graduation of sorts. Those are the dates of Shavuot, the holiday that commemorates the receiving of the Torah by the People of Israel. How is this a graduation? Fifty days earlier we celebrated Pesach, commemorating how the Lord brought us out of Egypt and gave us our freedom. But freedom alone is not enough. Freedom without rules is anarchy. The only way to keep freedom viable is to protect the rights of people with a system of rules that bring balance to society. Thus in receiving the Torah, we graduated from being lawless people with a hollow freedom to being a truly free People, a society of virtue and justice where real freedom could develop. In honor of Shavuot, please join your fellow congregants on Tuesday evening, May 14 at 7:45 pm for Services and a Tikkun Leil Shavuot, a Shavuot evening learning session. This year we, with the help of a well-prepared panel, will analyze the lives and relationships of the first Hebrew family. I think we are going to have a fascinating and enjoyable evening. Additionally I am restarting my Torah Study class in May and continuing through June. The dates are May 7, 21 and 28, June 4,11, and 18. Classes will be held on Tuesday mornings 10:30 am noon and Tuesday evenings 6:45 pm – 8 pm. In each class, we summarize the next week’s Torah portion and then study one aliyah’s reading with the help of Rashi and other commentators. Coffee and cake are served to the morning class. We learn a lot and have some very illuminating discussions at both classes. Please join us! I extend a hearty Yashar Koach to outgoing President Robin Laurentz, her officers and board for all the work they have done over the past two years. I wish our new administration great success as they lead our congregation into the future. Rabbi Steven M. Graber Page 2 PRESIDENT’S ARTICLE I am having some trouble wrapping my head around the fact that two years have flown by so quickly, and that my term as President of Temple Hillel is about to end. It seems like I just sat down to write my first article for the Bulletin, and I now sit here to compose my final one. So many events occurred over the last two years, and I had my share of disasters. I felt like they all waited for my presidency! Right after we had repaired the building from a backup of water we had to replace all of the carpeting and the walls in the lower ballroom and the back classrooms while preparing the building for the start of the school year. Then Hurricane Irene hit and we had to do all of the repairs over again. Just when someone would think you were out of the woods with all of the flooding, there was a major flood in one of the houses when all of the pipes burst. Let's not forget about Hurricane Sandy and how it devastated not only the building but the entire community. We had a damaged building, which now had to be put together, but, most importantly, we had a neighborhood in crisis. We were able to open our building as a refuge for those with no heat or electricity, as we were blessed with both. Congregants and neighbors were able to come to Temple Hillel to sit and shmooze with others as they charged phones and computers and watched TV. The way that our congregation rallied around those affected by Sandy was one of the highlights of my tenure as President You are never able to lead an organization of this size by yourself. You must have an outstanding team of coworkers around you, and I was surrounded by the best. My administration never failed to respond to anything I needed or wanted and gave the best advice that a President could ask for. I want to thank my Executive Vice President, Moshe Bezalel, my Vice Presidents. Jeff Reich, Victor Spetalnick, and Muriel Tannenbaum, Secretary Gaylann Klonsky, and my money men, Murray Blum and Stuart Kotler. Together we were all a force to be reckoned with! I could not have accomplished the work we did without all of you. I also want to take the opportunity to thank the past Presidents of Temple Hillel who were always there to lend a hand and share their words of wisdom as they have all been in similar situations before me. Special thanks to Janice Brown, Allan Greene, and Michael Feit for lending me their ear when I needed it. While giving out kudos, I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their hard work and dedication to our synagogue. Without all of the volunteers, Temple Hillel would not be as strong as we are. Rabbi Graber, Cantor Guber and Reb Blitz, I have enjoyed working with all of you over the last years. Rabbi, thank you for your friendship and guidance. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don't, but together we accomplished everything we set our minds to. Cantor David, your voice inspires not only me, but the entire congregation. I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice each Shabbat as you pray to Hashem for our congregation. Steve Blitz you are a treasure to Temple Hillel. You make make your job seem effortless, but I know that you put so much effort into Torah Reading and all that you do for us. Thank you gentlemen for your hard work. I run a business for my "real job" and I would gladly take any of these hard working women with me, but they are all so dedicated to Temple Hillel. Under the leadership of our Executive Director, Irene Nelson, they take care of any and all tasks we assign them, and always with a smile on their faces. Thank you Rita Markowitz and Jamie Warshal and Aleece Schneider, our bookkeeper. I felt that they were all truly my friends and not just workers. Ladies, what are you going to do without my Phone Calls!!!!! I would also like to thank Lloyd, Donald and Steven for ensuring that our building is in working order and that we have the best kiddush in town. While it seems that all is rosy and wonderful at Temple Hillel, I must caution the congregation at this time. Our budget runs an extremely high deficit. It took money from our reserve funds to repair, replace and restore our building. Our caterer was unable to fulfill his contract and left our shul, leaving us without the catering income. This has left our congregation with an even larger annual deficit to contend with. We must repair, replace and restore these funds and bank accounts which were further depleted while Sandy and the other floods were busy drowning us. Page 3 The time has come for us to help ourselves and keep Temple Hillel vibrant and alive for our community. Paying dues is only one aspect of our income. You can support your shul and here are several methods to do it: Buy Scrip! The money that our synagogue earns from your purchase of scrip for your daily needs far outweighs the effort it takes to pick up the scrip. Support our vendors who will donate as much as 15% of your purchase back to Temple Hillel. You don't even have to be a member of the congregation. This could be our most significant source of income each year if all of our members would participate…and there is no reason not to. You get dollar for dollar from Temple Hillel, the cost to you is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!, and we profit from the vendors donations. Attend A Function! There's always something happening at Temple Hillel, such as Journal Dinner Dance or Monte Carlo night, a Golf Outing, or Bingo or any of our smaller functions throughout the year.Bring your friends and have fun while your synagogue makes some needed money. Our members are the ones that can make a difference!!! You can also invest in the spiritual growth of Temple Hillel. Join the daily Minyan. Everyone who needs to say Kaddish or just feels the need to pray should have a minyan to attend. We need your help, even if you can only join the minyan one day per week. Come to a Shabbat service or one of our Friday evening Oneg Shabbats. You will feel like part of the family, because YOU ARE! No final article would be complete without thanking those who are the most important to us, our family. Nicole and Scott have been living the Temple Hillel life since they were young, and my step up to the Presidency was just another rung in the ladder for them. Thank you for allowing me the years to volunteer and do what I felt was important for our family and the congregation. Many of you know, I work with my husband at our business. When I told him I was going to take the presidency of Temple, he was right beside me, supporting me, giving his advice, and as always his love and devotion. You cannot ask for more than that from your family. Finally, thank you to the congregation of Temple Hillel for the honor of leading you over the last two years. Each holiday and Shabbat is has been my privilege to greet all of you and worship together with you. Please continue to support Temple Hillel both monetarily and spiritually, as we all need each other to keep our synagogue healthy and vibrant. I know that whomever takes the helm after me, will share the same trials and tribulations but mostly the joys and triumphs. B'shalom, Robin Sisterhood Happy Mother's Day to all One of the most rewarding Sisterhood activities is our Senior Luncheon.
