Civil Source Civil Engineers Make the Difference – They Build on the Quality of Life ASCE Utah Section Newsletter September 2007 President’s Message The Beginning of an Exciting Year By Brent Packer, PE September Photo: The YMF outreach kits were a success last year, especially when candy was involved! Contact Cable Murray if you would like to participate in this program, it is a great opportunity to get involved! It’s September, kids are back in school, football season has begun, and the ASCE Utah Section is ready to begin another exciting year. I have met with branch officers throughout the Section and have been impressed with the enthusiasm each of them have to make this year even better than before. Many activities, monthly luncheons, and service projects are being planned at the branch, younger member forum, and student chapter levels to meet many needs of the ASCE members in Utah. I encourage you to participate in these well-planned activities. The mission of ASCE is to provide essential value to our member’s, their careers, our partners, and the public though the following goals: ▪ Developing Leadership ▪ Advancing Technology ▪ Advocating Lifelong Learning, and ▪ Promoting the Profession The more you are involved and participate with ASCE the more you become a part of the mission of ASCE. I have been actively involved in one form or another since 2000 and have benefited from ASCE tremendously. It has provided me leadership opportunities, career development, and great friendships in the civil engineering community. If you are interested in becoming more involved speak to your local ASCE officer. There are many ways you can become involved. I am looking forward to another exciting year with ASCE and hope that you will make it another exciting year for you too! Brent Packer, P.E. Much of the Interstate highway system has been replaced once or even twice since its original construction. As the system has expanded, the financial and material resources to replace the system every 2530 years no longer exist. There is a need to change the paradigm to an engineered system that will last 100+ years. Such a system will have eliminate 2/3 of the greenhouse gas emissions, minimize the congestion associated with reconstruction and major maintenance operations, and most importantly create sustainable resources for the long term operation of the Interstate highway system. Dr. Tikalsky and his research team have been working on developing and implementing technologies that will economically prolong the life of the highway infrastructure and reduce the impact of concrete structures on the environment. He will present new ideas and those under implementation by many highway departments to build the 100-year highway. Micheal McKamey, P.E. Younger Member Forum The fall P.E. Exam is scheduled for October 26th, 2007. The YMF is in full swing of once again helping those interested in preparing to take the exam. The fall session of the P.E. Exam Review is scheduled to begin the second week of September. The kickoff meeting will be held September 6th at 6:00 pm at the UDOT Traffic Operations Center. For more details and the exact address please contact the Vice-President, Joe Serre. His contact information is below. The YMF will also be holding the annual Halloween Bash on October 19th, 2007 in Mill Creek Canyon. Just look for the YMF ASCE banner and you will be in the right spot. This is a great time to get free food, play games, make new contacts, carve pumpkins, and most of all get involved. We will also be holding our officer elections at the Bash. Please let others know of the event and encourage them to get involved. The time spent involved with the YMF is inversely proportional to the rewards. Come and get involved. The YMF outreach kits are still available to anyone in the state that would like a very easy way to get involved in outreach. This past summer I was sitting on my porch watching the kids ride bikes. I simply yelled candy, and for some reason they all came over. I grabbed the bag out of my trunk and within minutes I had kids from 4 to 16 years old sitting in my driveway eating gumdrops and building domes, towers, and whatever other shape they could conceive. It was easy, quick, simple, no preparation required outreach I have ever done. The kits are easily shipped to anyone and anywhere in the state. Let us know if you would like to give it a try.
