September may seem a long way off, but don’t forget to reserve
your ticket for the AFF Conference 2010. The Conference is for all
Army families, including Regular, Territorial Army and Regular
Reservists. It also means parents and siblings of serving soldiers,
as well as spouses and children. So if that’s you, don’t miss your
chance to take part. We also welcome serving military personnel
and representatives of organisations associated with the Armed
Forces.
Our guest speaker, Professor Tony Baker,
Consultant in Child, Adolescent and
Family Psychiatry, will talk about facing and
coping with the challenges of military life.
The address will no doubt strike a chord with many family members
and be of great interest to Unit Welfare teams and other agency
representatives. There will be plenty of scope for exploring other
issues during the two open forum debates, when there will be
a discussion panel which will include senior military personnel
and representatives from Government and key agencies. You can
ask your question in person at the Conference or have AFF speak
on your behalf. Why not send us your questions in advance by
submitting the online form on the Conference webpage.

Army family members and partners, £20 for all other delegates.

I can't believe that I am writing my final entry for CFL as HIVE
Manager Cyprus. The inevitable is upon us as our tour here draws
to and end and we head back to the UK after two years and two
moves in Cyprus.
I have been in post as HIVE Manager for Cyprus since August
2008. In that time there have been several changes in the
organisation. I have recruited seven new HIVE Information Officers
across island with three more to do before I go at the end of June.
We carried out an island-wide survey to identify the information
you wanted and how best to get it to you. We developed the HIVE
Cyprus website www.hivecyprus.co.uk, which is a fantastic costefficient platform to use in meeting our core business in delivering
relevant information to you. We were awarded a grant from
CESSAC which enabled us to purchase recording equipment and
books which are used to record Storybook Soldiers and Storybook
Wings as part of our provision in support of deployment.
Some things haven't changed, in particular the fact that HIVE
continues to provide information to the communities we serve as
well as a working conduit for information between the community
and the Chain of Command. HIVEs also often act as a focal point for
a variety of events and issues. HIVEs have also been able to act as a
drop off point for any number of items, from used mobile phones
and printer cartridges, entry forms for charity races, including the
Walkdown and Gate2Gate, and even shoes for charities!
At the heart of all this activity is the core function of what
HIVE does. We are an MoD funded tri-Service information
network available to all members of the service community,
whether single serving, married serving, UK Civil Servant
or dependant. Our core areas of information are local unit
and civilian facilities, places of interest, schools and further
education, housing, healthcare facilities and training
opportunities in your location.
Last but not least, and most appropriate to me right now, is
relocation. I have already contacted the HIO where I'm going next
to find out all I can about the local area. HIVE has a vast experience
of relocation information from our 155 HIVE Information Centres
around the world. So if you want to know about where you are
going, what the single accommodation or Married Quarters are
like, which schools are close by, which forms you need to fill in,
then drop into your local HIVE and get professionally signposted to
the right information. Moving can be stressful but planning early,
especially if you have animals or wish to export your car back to the
UK or other locations, pays dividends.
My successor (Cheryl Hall) will be taking over at the end of
June and will continue to deliver the HIVE service in Cyprus. I
would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have
supported me in my role as HIVE Manager Cyprus and in particular
the HIVE Information Officers whose hard work and dedication
are the reason HIVE is so successful in Cyprus. I would also like
to say goodbye to Mel (Nicosia) and Philippa (ESBA), who are also
relocating back to the UK.

achievements and share them with your fans online.
WHAT IS IT?
The Kodak PlaySport palm-sized camcorder is unlike
many of its rivals in the field as its robust design means
it has been built to tackle even the toughest of videoing
situations. Whether you are at the top a ski-slope,
skateboarding or even sailing, this is the perfect tool to
capture every heart-racing moment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Like many of its peers the PlaySport boasts an impressive
ability to capture 1080p high definition video clips which
are recorded to a removable SD or SDHC, or to the internal
memory.
It also has a decent five megapixel camera for still photos
but the thing that makes it stand out above the rest is
the fact that it is waterproof to three metres and despite
weighing only 128g, it is extremely strong.
IS IT PRACTICAL?
Well, some could argue that trying to
video anything when you are skiing, sailing or doing
any other adventurous activity is not the most practical
thing you could try but if you are going to, the PlaySport
is up to the challenge. It can be used with wet hands and
even with gloves on because the buttons are large enough
to make operating it easy. Ridges make it simple to grip and
one-touch buttons make recording easy.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Videos can be easily uploaded to social networking sites
like YouTube and Facebook and despite the lens being
rather tiny, the general quality of videos is pretty decent.
Designers have also ensured that it has unisex appeal as
the PlaySport is available in a manly black, blue and a more
feminine purple.
