There is no denying that in
life and in death, Eugenia
“Gene” Lara’s name will always be intertwined with the
late caregiver Juana Tejada.
Gene, as she was fondly addressed by friends and colleagues alike, died peacefully
April 1.2013 at Mt.Sinai hospital.
It was Gene who approached
this writer in March 2007 on
the plight of Tejada, whose
application for permanent
residency under the live-in
caregiver program was de-
nied after she failed a thenrequired second medical exam. Tejada was suffering
from cancer and was also refused medical benefits for the
disease which she contracted
while serving as a caregiver
here in Canada.

Toronto lass wins Binibing Pilipinas International 2013
BEA ROSE SANTIAGO, a 20
year old beauty queen from
Toronto bagged the prestigious Bb. Pilipinas International title in the recently
concluded Bb. Pilipinas Universe Pageant held at the
Smart Araneta Coliseum in
Manila. Bea bested 49 other
candidates from all over the
Philippines. She also won
the Miss Avon Award. Bea
will represent the Philippines in the Miss International Pageant to be held
late this year. Her beauty,
poise and personality played
a big role in quest for the
prestigious title.
Bea is not new to beauty
pageants. In 2011, Bea was
crowned as Metro Toronto’s
Prettiest Filipina. The same
year, she was crowned a
Mutya ng Pilipinas Canada
Bea is a proud product of
the International Professional Entertainment Network (IPEN) headed by Edgar Sulit. IPEN is the only
Filipino pageant organizer
in Toronto that sends its
winners to international
competitions. To date, IPEN
has sent twelve of its winners to international pageants in a period of less than
two years. Before joining

WILL YOU VOTE
FOR A “TRAPO, BIMPO OR BAGPOL”?
The May 13 general (or midterm) elections in the Philippines will be a test of maturity for most Filipino voters in
terms of whom they will
elect in office.
At stake are positions for 12
senators, 229 district congressmen, 80 provincial governors, and down to some
11,972 municipal councilmen. All in all there are
some 18,022 national and
local positions that would be
filled up including that from
the Autonomous Region of
Muslim Mindanao or ARMM.
But looking at the list of most
candidates or aspirants nationwide, political experts
believe there has been no
change in the face of local
politics in terms of personalities and even ideologies.
The two contending parties
are fielding aspirants who
are mostly offsprings, siblings
or distant relatives of incumbents.
“They are of the same moneyed and influential breed of
politicians who have been in
power for so many years,”
said one political pundit.

“Trapo” is a Spanish-derived
word that means “basahan”
or dirty rag in Pilipino.
Then there is the member of
the political dynasty, branded as “BIMPO” an acronym
for “Batang Isinalang ng
Magulang
sa
POlitika”.
These are the sons, siblings
or young relatives of incumbents who were groomed by
their parents in a life of politics to preserve their hold on
power and influence. BIMPO
means a face towel in Pilipino.
Thus, the term political dynasty is now the most debated
word in days leading to the
elections.
And there is the “BAGPOL”:
or the BAGong POLitico, the
idealist who wants to change
the current trend in Philippine politics with one that is
based on “levelling the playing field”.
The contention is that
electing the same people
from the same family or
bloodlines breeds inequities,
corruption and injustice.
These Bagpols have no money or means to wage a campaign as against the welloiled machine of most political parties.
It is stagnant politics and
stunts development.
They are referred to as the
“Don Quixotes” of Philippine
politics whose passion and
objective is changing the
country’s political scenario
that is not based on patronage and the three G’s (guns,
goons and gold).
On the other hand, politicians defend the idea saying
if the political dynasty or
family provides a good brand
of governance and spurs progress, then it is a good thing

not a few so-called community leaders and associations were quick to claim
credit for having it hurdle

caregivers when in the past,
there were disdained, belittled and ignored.
Suddenly, they became a
political tool, a fodder or
maybe a stepping stone to
gain popularity in the community.
Gene Lara, the tireless community advocate and activist from St. Jamestown had
all those times remained
silent when in fact it was
she who started it all.
It was Gene Lara who knew
that for the government to
listen, she had to make noises through the media and
mobilize the community to
take action.
Gene was media savvy. Her
late husband, Ben Lara was
one of the most respected
journalist in the Philippines
having been with the Manila
Bulletin for so many years.
Ben was a pioneer health
and science reporter.
Ben chose to migrate to Canada with his family rather
than serve the then dictator
Marcos.
Gene will be remembered as
the selfless community advocate who did justice to
Juana Tejada and the thousands of caregivers here in
Canada. Godspeed, Gene of
your journey to heaven!

tourism and travel promotions.

promoted by the Philippine
embassy and the consulgeneral in Ottawa and Toronto respectively, otherwise known as the Ambassadors and consuls-general
tour could be a misnomer.
Congen Mahilum West confided to me that the tour is
not merely limited to diplomat as the name implies.
She said everybody is invited to join the tour. If that’s
the case, I suggested that
young people or FilipinoCanadians who grew up
here should be given the
priority to join the journey.
Its because it is through visits to places in the country
where they will immersed
themselves in things that
are truly representative of
the Philippines in terms of
typical conditions, culture
and way of day to day living.
If possible, we should encourage these young people
to try to live or co-habit
with an average Filipino
family for a day or two and
maybe they will see the difference of being a Filipino or
a Filipino-Canadian.
For starter, let them learn
what is a washroom or a
“kubeta” is,
A “padyak”, “kuliglig” or a
tricyle and why these things
matter to most Filipinos.
And while at it, maybe we
can explain why we use
spoons and fork during
breakfast or dinner and sans
those gadgets, we also use
our bare hands to scoop our
food.
Presently, there is great interest among young Filipino
-Canadians who wants to
visit their country of origin
of their parents.
Social media, for one is a big
factor in projecting the Philippines as a top tourist destination.
Another is the
cheap prices and bargains
whether it is in shopping
malls, restos and nightclubs
and hotels.
The Philippines is also experiencing an excellent economic upswing that is attracting a lot of foreign investments.

10 Filipinos listed as qualifiers in Boston Marathon, but
DFA says no Filipino casualties in blasts

At long last, we have finally
made it!
With heads held high, we
stand before the Lord this
day as a witness to the glorious finale of all the Hebrew
prophecy and of Jesus'
earthly life! This is the feast
beyond compare! The feast
of New Life! This IS the
principal feast of our
Church! Christmas is a wonder in our eye. Advent and
Lent prepare us for God's
mystery to unfold before
us. Saints days and Feasts
days come and go calling us
to special remembrances.
But the Resurrection…the
Resurrection is the Feast of
all Feasts! Without the resurrection, Jesus' life would
have been a total failure, especially since new life in the
resurrection was promised.
When we look back over
Jesus' life - the countless
healings, the many moments
of forgiveness, the parables
that taught us about God,
and the words of compassion that only God could
speak. When we look back
on all of this in light of the
resurrection, we cannot help
but see it in new light. All of
our preparing through Lent,
all of our penance and sacrifice, where did it lead
us?
To new life, not to
death, or to punishment…
but to new life. The Light of
Christ shines in the midst of
darkness once again.
Resurrection is God's protest against the finality of
death; it is love out-staring
violence; it is laughter in the
tomb; it is the surprise of life
overcoming the inevitability
of Death. Resurrection is
God
having
the
last
laugh. This is why we surround ourselves with so
many symbols of new life:
white lilies open us to
life. Easter Eggs remind us
of the tomb that broke open
to bring forth new life.
Chocolate Bunnies...talk to
Cadbury!
Today we will use the rich
symbol of water blessed
during the Easter Vigil. Water reminds us of our own
Baptism in the Resurrection.
The Resurrection is the keystone, the central rock of our
faith on which everything
else is built and without
which, all would crumble
and fall apart. Despite this
crucial role of the resurrection, today's scriptural readings do not give a sense of
final fulfillment, or a feeling
of absolute security. There
might be a reason for that.
Mary Magdalene came to the
tomb to give Jesus a decent
burial. In the excitement
and turmoil of those last
days, no one had thought to
make plans for the days to
follow. Nor had there been
time for her to say goodbye
to him. So Mary came to the
tomb to say goodbye to Jesus. Like most of us who
are drawn to the cemetery
to say our goodbyes, maybe
she wanted to tell Jesus
what a great impression he
had made on her. How her
whole life was actually
changed through knowing
him. Maybe she would have
said that she didn't totally
understand the things he
said half the time, but loved
to listen anyway. She might
have shared that she wasn't
sure what the Kingdom of
God was really all about, but
if it was so important to Jesus, then it meant a lot to
her too.
Going to the tomb that
morning was a chance for
her to say she loved him as a
prophet, as a teacher, as
God's messenger, but most
of all because he was her
friend.
Mary
Magdalene
approached the tomb with
mixed emotions. Although
she had actually seen him
die, she had a sense that not
everything had died with
him. But she wanted closure, wanted to move on
with her life. She wanted to
stop pretending that the
world could ever be better
than it actually was. It was
time to deal with the bare
facts of death, not on heavenly hopes told in parables. As she looked back,
she saw that Jesus had given
her a vision of a just world
that could not be sustained,
given her a hope for peace
that
now could not happen. He
had called the poor blessed,
and the hungry…rich. He
had cursed the powerful.
But, in the end, the Romans
still ruled, the poor still
starved, and babies still
died. But even though his
death didn't seem to change
anything, even though the
disciples ran away, even
though they locked themselves up in the room, she
wanted to come and say
goodbye, and anoint his
dead body.
We know what happened
when she arrived. He was
gone! And there was great
confusion among the disciples who were perplexed by
what they saw. After she
was left alone, she encountered the risen Jesus. Her
tears of sorrow and confusion became tears of
joy. Mary Magdalene runs
and announces to the disciples the good news that he
she had seen the Lord. She

While we know that Jesus is
risen, there is a sense that
something is not all fulfilled. The past 3 days before Easter, our liturgy has
been about Servanthood,
Redemption, and New Life.
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and Sunday. Eating at
the table with Jesus and the
disciples, having our feet
washed as a lesson in service, kneeling at the foot of
the cross, a sign and source
of our Redemption, and
now, we witness with Mary,
the empty tomb. But the
story wasn't finished. And
on this day of days in our
Church year, the final message is to go and tell! This is
how it continues today for
us! So, Go and Tell!!!
This was truly the dawning
of a new day! Christ has redeemed us and calls us to
share
that
good
news! How? By being the
servant to wash feet, to
share bread and wine in
memory of him, to seek justice and make sure the poor
feel blessed and the hungry…filled.
As we will see over the next
50 days of our Easter Season, we will be waiting in
hope with the disciples of
the early church, for the
coming of the Holy Spirit at
Pentecost. The giving of the
Holy Spirit is another piece
of the foundation on which
we stand. Today, we truly
celebrate new life, through
Water and Resurrection.
Without today's celebration
of Resurrection, nothing else
makes sense - especially the
cross.
So don't stay at the tomb.
He is not there. He has been
raised to new life!
From this day on, may we
remember that we are a
people of the resurrection,
and "Alleluia" is our Song!

I had the sense of urgency
to see Gene Lara the moment I heard that she was
brought to the ICU of Mount
Sinai Hospital. I have great
respect for this woman. I
consider myself privileged
and honored to know her
deeply as a very dear friend,
a confidante, a caring mother and a loving grandmother. I am witness to the
many things she has done
for the community. She was
a community leader in the
true essence of the position.

on her; she earned every

She was a woman whose
passion was to serve rather
than be served.
What struck me was the last
talk we had while she laid
on her hospital bed. As
soon as I left, her message
echoed to me in a rather
bizarre way. Instead of diminishing, it built up to a
persistent crescendo not
knowing that it will be our
last conversation.
My last meeting with Gene was
planning St. Jamestown Festival
At her situation, she was
hungry for the latest news
about the Filipino community she dearly loved. After
updating her and sharing
our views, she declared:
“I will always be thankful
for the opportunity of putting the Juana Tejada case
to the mainstream radar. I
worked really hard in putting the unprecedented case
to the attention of the government. That was one of
my biggest contributions to
our people in Canada. I
wish to be remembered for
spearheading the campaign
towards what was to become the Juana Tejada
law.” (For those who did not
know, Gene Lara took a personal loan towards the payment forJuana Tejada’s initial medical needs. She did
this without the knowledge
of her family. This, she confided to me when she approached me for help.)
What is admirable about
this woman was her ability
to use all the fanfare and
publicity she received that
was attached to her position
as a community advocate, as
a way to gain more access
towards obtaining government assistance for the people in need.
It was not
done for personal accolades
but rather as a leverage to
gain more credibility and
posterity to do more for the
community she served. She
utilized the community and
mainstream media simply
to create awareness of the
social needs of our people
such as the very successful
“Toy Drive” every Christmas. She was not just a volunteer community leader
and social worker; she defined her roles with passion.
Gene Lara’s name is synonymous to charity. She is
known for her unselfish and
unheralded charity work.

name Mon – was the Lionel
Ritchie of the Philippines
before he immigrated to
Canada in 1981 to join his
parents and five of his nine
siblings who had moved to
the country before him, settling in Windsor, Ont.
His band, the Hotdogs, had
topped the charts with their
invention of a new musical
genre called the Manila
Sound, a type of bubblegum
music laced with Taglish, an
English-Tagalog hybrid that
is today the lingua franca of
Filipino mass media.
Mon and the Hotdogs were
major celebrities in the
1970s, appearing on national TV, radio, newspapers
and magazines. Torralba’s
hit single, Pers Lab, what
Filipinos who have difficul-
ties pronouncing the letters
F and V understand to mean,
First Love, was a best-seller
that continues to yield royalties for its composer.
“So I was quite well known
and established, I had something going on,” says Torralba, the former ad copywriter/jingle tunesmith for the
Manila branch of the J. Walter Thompson advertising
firm, who was 26 at the time
he uprooted.
“I really didn’t want to come
to Canada, but I tossed in an
application to the Canadian
consulate in Manila just to
make my family happy.”
He didn’t take the process
seriously, and then to his
shock, one week after applying, he was selected to immigrate.
“I thought this was a sign or
something from God that I
had to go to Canada,” he
continues. “It was going to
be culture shock, for sure,
but I justified it by saying to
others who thought me crazy for wanting to leave,
‘Why have Hotdog when you
can have steak?’”
Except the pickings in his
new country were slim.
Despite there being more
than 500,000 Filipinos said
to be living in Canada,
Torralba found that there
wasn’t a huge demand for
the Manila Sound. He was
forced to diversify and, after
seeking retraining, the guitar-playing singer eventually joined the Toronto police
force where he worked for
29 years in the information
technology department until
taking
early
retirement
in
2010.
But he hasn’t touch with his
roots. Among other ventures, he helps his wife manage the annual Filipinos
Making Waves Festival in
Toronto to spread Filipino
music.
His second wife suffers from
lupus, and he left the force
early to help her manage the
annual Filipinos Making
Waves Festival, which he
had founded in 2007 as a
way of disseminating Filipino music to a wider audience.
Besides a stage,
Torralba has given followers
of his Manila Sound their
own community newspaper
called Waves, no doubt in
reference to the good vibrations he is trying to spread.
As well as creative director
of the event that takes places at Dundas Square in Toronto on July 13, the 57-year
-old father of five grown
children is also in charge of
a consultancy company
whose title, Mentor Productions, again speaks to his
largesse. “I am a musician
who wants to give other musicians exposure,” Torralba
says. “It’s why I gave the festival an English name. I want
to bring Filipino music
mainstream.”

Dolphy's statue in Manila unveiled
MANILA, Philippines -- A statue of
the late comedian Dolphy was unveiled on Tuesday in Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Dolphy for the kindness he had
shown to his family, friends, coworkers and even people he does
not know, who have benefitted from
his philanthropic ways sans any fanfare.
In response, Dolphy Quizon Jr., the
eldest in of the comedian's children,
thanked Lim for having built the
monument in behalf of his father.
He also noted that Lim had been his
father’s best friend way back when
they were much younger.
The seven-foot bronze statue, which
was made by Jonas Roces, the same
artist who did the monument of the
late actor Fernando Poe Jr., was
erected in front of the Museo Pambata, near the corner of T.M. Kalaw
and Roxas Boulevard.
The Museo Pambata was a beneficiary of the RVQ Foundation, established by Dolphy in 1966, which is
the reason why it had been chosen
as the site of his monument.
Tuesday's wreath-laying and unveiling ceremony was led by Manila
Mayor Alfredo Lim, who was a good
friend of Dolphy, and attended by
children, relatives and friends of the

gaming prospects in the Philippines.
The Philippines has the potential to
be the “Broadway of Asia” through a
$1.1-billion integrated casino complex along Manila Bay, the company
said.
“Travellers Group remains uniquely
and strategically positioned to capitalize on the growth opportunities in
the Philippines through its existing
operations Phase 3 expansion at
Newport City,” Genting said.
Genting said it is also banking on the
$1.1-billion Resorts World Bayshore
at the Philippine Amusement and
Gaming Corp. (Pagcor)-owned Entertainment City.
Travellers International Hotel Group
Inc. – which owns the eight-hectare
Resorts World Manila complex in
Pasay – is a joint venture of local
conglomerate Alliance Global Group
Inc. and Genting Hong Kong, the
third-largest cruise line operator in
the world.
Specifically, Genting said the expansion at Newport City includes the
Marriott Grand Ballroom, which will
be a 5,000-seater venue for meetings and conventions, and new
world-class hotels under the Hilton
and Sheraton brands

Toronto Knights of Rizal
to Present Tableau
The Knights of Rizal Toronto Chapter will present a Historical and
Cultural Tableau on the Birth of the Filipino Nation. The tableau will
be shown at the 519 Community Centre located at 519 Church Street,
Toronto, Ontario on April 27, 2013. Registration starts at 6:30 P.M.
Concept for the tableau is by Sir Manny Bade, KCR who is also the
director. Executive Producer is Sir John de los Santos, KCR. Sir Joe
Luzadas, KGOR is the historical consultant. Sir Mario Alpuerto, KCR
is the chapter commander of Toronto. Ticket control is by Sir Ben
Ferrer, KCR and ticket distribution is handled by Sir Frank Crawford,
KCR. Narration is to be done by Sir Voltaire de Leon of the Rizal Society of Ontario. Special participation is to be provided by the United
Aklanon Association of Toronto, liaison Mrs. Tisza Maravilla. The
Culture Philippines of Ontario will provide the cultural dances.
The tableau will encompass the history of the Philippines that started
with the arrival of the 10 Bornean Datus in Panay. It reenacts the
struggles of the Filipino People to find their identity and free themselves from the tyranny of foreign conquerors, the first battle led by
Lapulapu who successfully defended his realm by killing Magellan,
the first circumnavigator of the world. What followed are small revolts that culminated in the revolution led by Andres Bonifacio triggered by the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal. The tableau will end with
the proclamation of independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit
Cavite which heralded the birth of the Filipino Nation.
The tableau is sponsored by the Silayan Community Centre headed
by Ms. Nora Dabu Taculad and funded by the New Horizons for
Seniors Program under the “Seniors working for seniors project”.
Project coordinator is Mr. Hernani de Leon.
We will attempt to present an educational as well as an entertaining

Gene felt this was an injustice because she became ill while under
employment and therefore entitled
to health benefits like any other
worker.
Gene and Tejada presented their
case to the community, the media
and to the government in Ottawa,
citing among others that a second
medical test is unnecessary and unfair as a requirement for permanent
residency.
With Gene’s persistence and perseverance, a groundswell of support
and sympathy for Tejada case went
into full gear.
The government, bowing to public
opinion finally relented and granted
more than what Gene and Tejada
wished for.
SATURDAY
On December 12.2009, it enacted
what is now known as the Juana
Tejada law amending the caregiver’s
live in program that eliminates
among others a second medical test
requisite for application for permanent residency .
Tejada died in March 2009, nine
months before she could have savor
the honour bestowed upon her but
the new and amended law also
streamlined the time frame on when
a caregiver can apply for permanent
residency.
Gene’s work with the community
has been marked with selfless dedication.
Throughout the episodes of Tejada,
Gene maintained her modest demeanor while some personalities
and groups quickly claimed credit
for the work they have never done
on behalf of the departed caregiver.
Unknown to many, Gene took out a
SUNDAY
personal loan to finance Tejada’s
medical needs as a cancer patient.
Even her family never knew this until her last days.
From her deathbed, Gene declared “I
will always be thankful for the opportunity for putting the Juana
Tejada case into the mainstream
radar.”
Gene’s hallmark advocacy of the
Tejada’s case merely confirms her
pioneering work in her home country in the Philippines where she engaged in self-help projects mostly
for women and her involvement in
many Third world conferences for
women with the United Nations.
In 1981, Gene and her husband migrated to Saskatchewan,Canada and
it was there that Gene served as executive director of
Immigrant
Women of Saskatchewan before finally moving to Toronto after the
death of her husband, Ben Lara, who
was a respected and veteran journalist in the Philippines.
In Toronto, Gene revived the Silayan
centre which served newcomers to
Canada. She was also an executive
director of Intercede.
Briefly, Gene dabbled in politics
when she ran as a candidate for MPP
under the NDP banner.
She was a well known community
figure at St.Jamestown community
where she was a founding member
of the St. Jamestown Tenants network.
Gene is survived by daughters and
sons: Rita MaEachern (Fred), Ramon
Lara (Michael Montague), John Lara,
Chiarra Lara, Paul Lara (Abbey) and
grandchildren, Dominica Noelle,
Mateo Santo, Aria Angeli, Ethan Josue, Katia Isabelle and Tristan , all
surnamed Lara.

phenomenon,”
and noted that future Filipino
champions, including 2012

Donaire, will find it hard to
follow his footsteps.
“It’s a lot like Larry Holmes
following Muhammad Ali,” Collins said in a conversation with
ESPN’s Jim Basquil.
“Holmes was a fantastic fighter,
but he never really got the
credit he deserved because he
followed the legend. Donaire
may have that kind of problem
after Pacquiao retires,” Collins
said.
Collins put Donaire in fourth
place in his list of Top 10 Filipino fighters, noting that “The
Filipino Flash” is a “fast, skillful
boxer with murderous punch.”
“(He) must beat Guillermo
Rigondeaux on Saturday to
retain his position,” he added.
In third place was Pancho Villa,
the first Filipino world champion.
“(Villa) endeared himself by
holding the ropes apart and

bell rang, however, Villa was
nowhere near as friendly, and

the launch of Richard Yap as
one of the brand ambassadors
of pasta brand Amigo Segurado this week. Even as his star
continues to rise—from his
first breakthrough role on ABS
-CBN’s Binondo Girl as “Papa
Chen,” to his current “crush ng
Richard Yap, TV’s beloved Sir Chief
bayan” character as “Sir Chief”
in the hit morning soap Be
Careful My Heart—the man is
still as grounded as ever, and
almost oblivious to his fame.
A rarity in the industry, TMT
had to ask the 45-year-old Chinoy from Cebu if he still finds
it difficult to believe that he is
one of today’s hottest leading
men. For sure, his reply will
get more women swooning at
his feet: “I don’t want to be
carried away by it all. I know
this is fleeting and I want to be
able to get back to a normal
life when that time comes.”
Yes, Sir Chief is as devoted to
his real-life Maya and their
children as ever, who were
present to support him at his
joint launch with young heartthrob Daniel Padilla.
It is therefore no surprise that

of screenings in the Philippines, ABS-CBN Star Cinema’s It Takes A Man and a
Woman – part three of the
blockbuster romantic comedy trilogy starring John

heart attack in 2009.
Villanueva, who stayed with
his aunt in Pasig City during
his freshman year, remembered receiving calls and text
messages that his father was

left. I took the jeep but I was
already startled by the news
I forgot to claim my change
from the driver,” he said.
He was already on Shaw
Boulevard about to take a
bus south when he realized
he did not have any money
left.
“I asked an MMDA (Metro
Manila Development Authority) officer if he could lend
me money for my fare. I told
him my father was in the
hospital. He flagged down a
bus and asked the driver to
give me a free ride,” Villanueva recalled.

While in school, he took jobs
hosting friends’ debuts and
worked part-time at a dance
studio for pocket money. He
said he loved dancing.
“They might not be around to
congratulate me on my graduation day but there were
thousands who did and said I
was, somehow, able to touch
their lives,” he said.
