Tubbataha Reef damage getting worse

grounding of the USS Guardian last week, which damaged the protected Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea.

were shocked by the grim
news of a shooting rampage
in Newport town, Connecticut that claimed the lives of
26 persons including 20 kindergarten kids.

conflict of interest in gambling or Jueteng (illegal
numbers game) between
the two groups.
The victims were all peppered with bullets with
some shot at close range in
the head.
The death of Nicole has triggered a massive call for
stricter gun control laws if
not a total gun in the Philippines. In the US, President
Obama has announced
measures to curb or control
gun ownership.
Guns in the wrong hands,
improper handling or lack
of training are some of the
reasons why lives are lost
unnecessarily.
It may be or may not be a
problem of gun or the socalled “culture of guns“ to
be blamed for all these sad
episodes but it has got to
stop.
For instance, the Philippines
has at least 1 million loose
firearms which means potentially, these can be used
in criminal activities.
Additionally, there are also
the same number of licensed firearms in the
hands of civilians but these
number can be easily traced
and checked.
In America, the ownership
of gun is guaranteed by the
constitution. This is based

But in the Philippines, the
criminals have become so
sophisticated in terms of
firearms that sometimes,
the police are hamstrung to
stop them while gun ownership is so rigid and expensive that ordinary citizens
are left to fend for themselves against bad elements.

should there be a gun ban, a
regulated gun control or
regulated gun ownership?

and paid more by employers, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).
Of the "Big 3," UP graduates
were the fastest to find
work but were paid a
smaller starting salary
compared to Ateneo or La
Salle graduates.
UP graduates only waited
an average of 1.8 month to
come per month of around
P 10,100.
In comparison, graduates of
other private sectarian universities spent almost 4
months looking for work
and got a mean income of

Mary, Mother of God

I
t’s the most wonderful
time of the year to
make and break resolutions.
The need to
make those resolutions have
been tugging at our hearts
for months, and for some
the last few weeks. Like,
taking more time to take
care of ourselves. More exercise. Less food. There’s
that short fuse that gave
everybody in the family
their “on-edge” Christmas.
Whatever the resolution,
we’ve spent a lot of time
pondering what to do.
Pondering…our Gospel today shares with us that
Mary pondered in her heart
all that had taken place. She
treasured and pondered all
that had taken place in those
days.
The birth of her
child…the shepherds’ tale of
angels proclaiming to them
the good news that their
Saviour had been born...the
Messiah...the Lord. Imagine
hearing these definitions of
your child being told to you.
It would leave us speechless.
Mary took it all in and treasures all these things and
ponders them in her heart.
Mary is just an ordinary
woman, living in ordinary
times. Very similar times as
today, with all its good and
bad. She is an ordinary human being whom God
reached out to, in order to
embrace humanity. She may
be an ordinary person, but
she did an extraordinary
thing.
Both Matthew and Luke
open their Gospels celebrating how God visits his people in the birth of Jesus.
Mary, a young Jewish girl is
chosen to be the mother of
the Son of God. There is no
suggestion that Mary is
longing and praying for a
child of her own. There is
no suggestion that Mary, like
Sarah and Elizabeth, is old
and barren. Mary is young
and a virgin.
But just as old age and being
barren are no barriers to the
plan of God, neither is youth
or virginity. For as we hear
in the story, nothing is impossible for God.
In being the mother of Jesus,
Mary does the same things
as any mother, nurturing
within her womb the great
development of a little child
taking shape. Another human being is formed in the
mother’s body, but the
mother can never keep the
child within her. But Motherhood not only means having a baby, but also letting

them grow to adulthood.
That is something which
Mary had to do, not only to
nurture Jesus in his growing,
but eventually let him go his
way to make a future for

Mary has to do what God,
the Father did let go of his
Son. And that is what Mary
does. She does not anxiously clutch Jesus to herself, but
gives him to us. She asks us
to do what she does. Share
Jesus with everyone. Give
Him as good news of life to
others.
Mary is the first among us,
human beings, who accepted the word of God in her
life and received Jesus. She
is the first Christian, the
First Disciple. As we gather
today, on this beginning of
the new year, we turn to
Mary as our mother, Our
Mother of Perpetual Help,
mindful of her intercession
for us and for our world.
Mary’s pondering of the
events of those days is an
image for us that might
bring us closer and deeper
into our need to make resolutions as this year begins.
She treasured the gift of God
resting in her arms. A mystery indeed. But something
as real as you and me.
Ponder this year the mystery of who you are. Who
Christ is for you this year.
Ponder the great mystery of
how you and I are connected, how we connect with our
brothers and sisters around
us. Perhaps one of our resolutions to ponder is to find
time to ponder to be in
God’s presence for a little bit
each day and engage ourselves in conversation with
Jesus discovering, as the
Shepherds, the meaning of
who he is now for you, as
Messiah and Lord.
the hopes of this coming
year, a year for peace, let’s
not dwell on the past, God
doesn’t. Let’s look forward
to the peace that God continues to bring to birth in us,
just as God did through
Mary, who so graciously and
lovingly raised up a son who
calls each one of us his sisters and brothers to live a
life of grace.

an opportunity to strengthen the relationship, and continue to build trust,” Yuen
said. “It means a lot to me
and the community when
we see the kids knowing our
officers by their names, and
that they respect each other.
Both teams competed hard,
and had a great deal of fun.”

said the kids proved tough
competitors.
“We started a Youth Basketball League in our priority
communities in an effort to
keep the youth off the
streets, out of trouble and
active on the courts to showcase their talent and passion
for basketball,” Chen said.
“The outcome of this program will not only benefit
the participants but also the
community at large. We will
definitely do this program
again for the coming year.”

Welcome to 2013 and the
planning for this year’s
Youth Waves Concert Festival is heavily under way.
The youth flocked to the CNE Queen Elizabeth Theatre to watch the
Youth Waves 2012 concert that featured amazing performances by
Tori Kelly, Jenny Suk, Jeff Bernat, Mitchell Grey Band and Toronto’s
very own D-Pryde.
For someone like me, annual events don’t get easier
over time but just that much
harder when you’re trying
to introduce new and
groundbreaking concepts as
well as maintaining any current ones too. I can’t give

all dimensions of sustainability: ecological, economic,
cultural, political, societal,
human,
and
spiritual."
The
festival's
name
"liwanag" is the Filipino
word
for
"light."
Contrasting
this
with
"ningning", which means
"glitter" or "false light," festival organizers noted that
Filipino heroes understand
"the importance of creating
a new nation on the basis of
profound inner change."
"'[L]iwanag" can be interpreted to mean a profound
form of creativity. Without
creativity,
sustainability
would not be possible," they
said on the festival website.

the National Statistics Office, Albert said college
graduates account for at
least 18 percent of the total
unemployed in the country.

specialization; no interest in

low; and, no job opening
within the vicinity of residence.
"The GTS clearly has a
wealth of information that
are useful in designing policies that put education in
sync with employment," he
said.
Albert told
ABSCBNNews.com they are still
waiting for the results of a
new 2012 GTS that was
commissioned to DLSU.
"The CHED appears to have
conducted the GTS last year,
and I look forward to examining the results," he said.

On a visit to the North American
School of Information Technology
(NASIT), it became apparent to us
why NASIT has become one of the

Chinese New Year
in the Philippines
In the Philippines, a Tsinoy is a Filipino of Chinese heritage. It is a combination of "Tsino" meaning Chinese
and the slang word "Pinoy" meaning
Filipino. (The term Intsik has fallen
out of favor.)
Drangon and Lion Dance. There is
a parade of dancing lions or a dragon in the Binondo district of Manila
(the primary Chinatown) and even
in a few other cities in the Philippines where there is a sizable Chinese presence.
The lion's head is large and has a
body of long, colorful fabric. Dancers
must be strong in holding it up and
skillful in manipulating it in an animated way. Homeowners leave ang
pao on top of their entrance gates or
hang it by their door for the lion

Underwater Hockey: Philippines’ Fastest Growing Water Sport
In 1979, the president of a
dive shop in Manila named
Dive Asia, read an article
about underwater hockey in
a World Underwater Federation (CMAS) magazine. After
inquiring and receiving information about game rules and
equipment, their first underwater game was held in the
shop's own pool in 1980. It
reached the dive club at the
University of the Philippines,
known as the U.P. Divers
were they became the first to
find a regular venue for the
scrimmage games. They first
played at Quezon City Sports
Club swimming pool every
Tuesday night from 1984 to
1997.
By 1990, these players finally
incorporated themselves into
the Philippine Underwater
Hockey Club. Since then, it
has evolved to become the
Philippine Underwater Hockey Confederation (PUHC) and
is recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and
the Confederation Mondiale
des Activites Subaquatiques
(World Underwater Federation).
Clubs and International
Tournaments
Exposure was not limited to
Metro Manila. The group's
enthusiasm for underwater
hockey has brought some
PUHC members to places like
Cebu, Angeles, Bacolod and
Quezon. By October 1998, the
first PUHC Affiliate, the Bacolod Underwater Hockey
Team was inducted into the
PUHC. And the first game of
the Davao Underwater Hockey Club was held in November 2002.
A PUHC member, Joey Carpio
helped built the Singapore
club. PUHC try to extend its
networks by building more
clubs like the Cebu Underwater Hockey Club last year and
soon their very own club
based in Australia. With some
of the PUHC members playing in the United States, Singapore and Australia teams,
it has brought its local team
to compete in international
competition.
Enthusiasm for underwater
hockey inevitably brought
the PUHC to the Pacific Coast
Championships in Canada, an
international competition for
the first time in 1995. The
group returned the following
year to have its Mixed Division entry streak to a remarkable Fourth Place finish
amidst a dozen other teams
at the 1996 PCCs in Fremont,
California. By the 1997 PCCs
in Hawaii, the Philippine
Mixed Team has advanced to
the Second Place.
But the players have for
many years held this dream
of participating in the World
Championships-the
'Olympics' of underwater
hockey. In June of 1998, the
Men's and Women's Teams
excitedly shared the pool
with the best of the best from
14 countries all over the
globe. The PUHC has since
then participated in the 2000
PCCs and over the years,
some Filipino players individually joined the PCCs as
part of a team composed of
other players from different
countries.
The Sport
Underwater hockey is a very
fast moving game that quickly builds swimming and free
diving capability. It is played
on the bottom of a swimming
pool by two teams of six.
Players wear fins, mask,
snorkel, a protective glove,
ear guards and headgear.
Success (scoring) ultimately
depends on teamwork, since
no single person can hold
their breath that long.
Underwater hockey is a game
of teamwork and strategy.
Each team will try to out
swim, duck their opponent
and guide a 3-pound lead
puck towards a goal, an untended 10-foot metal goal
post lying at the swimming
pool floor. And you do all of
these while holding your
breath.
Though speed is an advantage, it does not necessarily equate to a win. Newbie players usually rely on
speed but as you play longer,
you realize it's more important to keep puck possession, timing and being able to
outsmart your opponent.
This is a sport dedicated primarily to having fun in the
water. Anyone can play very
effectively, and all those willing to try are welcome. Typically, members come from
different areas of sports such
as divers, mountaineers, rowing teams, triathletes, swimmers and other sports enthusiasts-wannabe. Underwater
hockey in the Philippines includes people of all ages &
shapes. Underwater hockey
is played 4 times a week
(Tuesdays, Thursdays and
weekends) in Ultra, La Salle
Greenhills, Manila Polo Club
and Philippine Army Pool.
Every year, the club hosts
different tournaments like
December Balikbayan tournaments, quarterly batch
graduation tournaments, anniversary tournaments; and
other fun activities like November Halloween Race,
Christmas parties, Summer
Outings and their planned
triathlon to motivate members, enlarge the community
and celebrate the love of the

only for the benefit of entertaining myself,” Salonga added.
In Lo’s interview, Hathaway
was all praises for Salonga,

Later in the interview, Lo
asked Hathaway again on

Salonga. Hathaway pleasantly declined: "We've already

Lang Kita Mamahalin.”

through an official statement, released on the night
of Jan. 21. It read: “Due to
the unfortunate incident
between Gerald Anderson
and Maricel Soriano that
transpired on the first taping day of 'Bukas Na Lang
Kita Mamahalin,' the ABSCBN management and the
management of Maricel So-

Magic, released its official
statement on Jan. 22 in support of their 23-year-old
homegrown talent:
"Star Magic has the utmost
confidence not only in Gerald Anderson’s exceptional

Does Bert remember that ‘the world is an apple’?

giant in his twilight years who is
probably finding it (if he ever does)

whose daughter Leila once played

Bert’s condition has taken its toll on
the family, according to Eva, which
was aggravated by the sudden passing of one of their daughters, Sonya,
52, a poet, who was found dead in
her Manhattan apartment in November last year. The cause of death
was pneumonia.
“We all try to be strong for each other,” Eva said, “especially me. I already had quadruple bypass. I cannot die. Not now. Hindi ako puwede

needs me. I thank God we’re holding
up well and my whole family is my
source of strength. Like this Christmas, all of our children and grandchildren are here with us. Even our
daughter Leila, who is based in Paris, flew in with her daughter Tess to
be with us again.”

At present, Bert is under medication
and has been seeing a psychologist
every other week.
“He’s okay as long as he taking his
medication religiously,” Eva said.
“Aside from reading, he goes to concerts and watches movies. Like the
other day, we watched the movie
Lincoln and he loved it. We talked
about the movie. He hasn’t lost cognition. He still remembers people
and events. He stays in my apartment during weekends, but it’s better that he’s in the assisted-living
facility where he is closely monitored.”
“When I talked to Bert on the phone
recently, he sounded coherent and
even talked about his illness,” said
Edmund. “He told me, ‘The doctor
told me I have Alzheimer’s...and I’m
battling this terrible depression. But
I’m aware of what’s going on around
me. I feel fine and I feel normal. I
know you...and I know all of my
friends. Just pray for me.’ I assured
Bert that I would.”

2012 and has been suffering from

checks on him,” said Edmund.
Now 81, Bert (born on July 28,
1931) is a prolific author and playwright who shot to fame in the
1950s with his work, The World is
an Apple, one of the most performed
plays in the Philippines. It also gave
him his first Palanca Award in 1954
when he was just 23. He is a contemporary of Nick Joaquin, Jose Garcia Villa and NVM Gonzalez.

Eva is herself a writer, art curator
and retired university professor.
The couple relocated to Portland to
be close to their daughter Lisa, a
voice teacher who has a private studio there.
Eva recalled that Bert’s depression
set in when his doctor informed him
he’s in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis was a result of
a medical test after Bert got lost
twice and couldn’t find his way
home from his regular trip to a coffee shop.
“Bert couldn’t accept the fact that he
has Alzheimer’s which he knows is a
progressive disease that has no
cure,” shared Eva. “He used to be so
good at computers but he couldn’t
write anymore and his depression
only worsened. He started acting
strange and even became suicidal,

Remittances hit new high in Oct

Canadian kills 2, shoots self in Cebu justice hall
MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – A
Canadian killed 2 people and wounded
an assistant prosecutor before turning
the gun on himself in a shooting spree
inside the Cebu City justice hall Tuesday morning.
The gunman, 67-year-old Canadian
John Pope, fired shots inside the Marcelo Fernan Hall of Justice and initially
hit two people, identified as Dr. Rene
Rafols and his lawyer Jovian Atias.
Rafols, a pediatrician, and Atias died
inside the sala of Municipal Trial Court
in Cities (MTCC) Branch 6, where a malicious mischief case against Pope was
being heard.
After shooting Rafols and Atias, Pope
went to MTCC Branch 1 and shot Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Teresa Casino.
Senior Superintendent Mariano Natu-el
Jr., officer-in-charge of Cebu City Police,
said Pope looked for two more targets,
identified as Fiscals Oscar Capacio and
Nicolas Sellon.
Natu-el said Capacio and Sellon were
also handling the other cases against
Pope, who was sued for numerous
counts of malicious mischief, grave
threat and illegal possession of firearms.

Cases vs Pope
A report by ABS-CBN News Cebu
said the feud between Rafols
and Pope had been going on for
years. At one point, an armed
Pope allegedly barged into the
house of Rafols. It was not clear,
however, how the tiff between
the two started.
The specific reason for Pope's
sudden outburst was not yet
established. However, various
journalists such as ABS-CBN Cebu's Vilma Andales said Pope
had been making rounds in various media offices to express his
frustration over the criminal
charges filed against him by his
neighbors.
Andales said Pope had once demanded that they air a story favorable to him.
Pope was allegedly hostile to his
neighbors and would sometimes
be seen brandishing his firearms.
Another report, meanwhile, said
a local court had issued a deportation order against Pope, but
the Bureau of Immigration has
yet to implement it.
Due to the shooting, all court
proceedings in the hall of justice
have been suspended.
The Supreme Court Public Information Office said Chief Justice
Maria Lourdes Sereno has sent
Court Administrator Midas
Marquez to Cebu to investigate
