On April 22, 1784, Benjamin Franklin
wrote to Benjamin Webb expressing his
intention to help Webb by lending him
some money. However, Franklin didn’t
want to be repaid directly; instead he
hoped Webb would someday meet an
honest man in need of financial help
and pass the money on to him.
Said Franklin, “This is a trick of mine for
doing a deal of good with a little money. I
am not rich enough to afford much in good
works, and so am obliged to be cunning and
make the most of a little.”
Jung-Wook Kim talks about careers in entrepreneurship with Steven Miller .
Three centuries later, the concept of
“paying it forward” is still alive and well in the College of Business.
Steven N. Miller, founding partner of Northbrook-based venture capital firm Origin Ventures,
is paying it forward by funding several annual scholarships for business students who demonstrate
academic success and a zealous passion for entrepreneurship.
After graduating from the College of Business in 1987, Miller worked for Quill Corporation, an
office products company his father and uncle founded in 1956. When the family sold to Staples, Inc.

BIF Receives LEED
Platinum Certification
The College of Business, its students,
faculty, staff, alumni, and friends believe in
the importance of social and professional
responsibilities, which is why the Business
Instructional Facility was commissioned with
the goal in mind of garnering a LEED rating.
LEED is an internationally recognized green
building certification system created by the
U.S. Green Building Council.
After 4 years of careful implementation,
the U.S. Green Building Council
acknowledged our efforts with their highest
rating of Platinum.
The Business Instructional Facility stands
as a lasting symbol of the commitment we
share and values we adhere to as we take up
the challenge of leading business and our
communities to sustainable practices. From
here we must harness the great energy of
Business Illini to build a cleaner, healthier
future.

in 1998, Miller found himself in a position to give back to the
college which had given so much to him.
About 10 years ago, Miller began offering the Steven N.
Miller Entrepreneurial Scholarships to promising business
students. The scholarships, ranging from $3,000 to $5,000,
reward full-time, tuition-paying students with a financial
boost. This year, the scholarships were awarded to two students who are paying it forward in their own way.
Recipient Fraser Kinnear learned about the scholarship
from Mark Paik, his friend and co-founder of the U of I
chapter of Entrepreneurs Without Borders (EWB), a national
organization with more 180 chapters on U.S. campuses.
A Chicago native, Steven N. Miller ’87

knew that’s where I wanted to go to
college,” recalls Miller.
“I wasn’t eligible for other scholarships based on need or
merit. But since this was based on entrepreneurial aspirations, there was a smaller pool of
eligibility,” shared Kinnear who is using the funds to reduce his college debt. “It was a great
honor and I really appreciate it.”
Recently, Kinnear traveled with EWB to a small mountain village in Peru to help farmers
understand why their businesses were failing. On a return trip, Kinnear and fellow EWP
members focused on education and helped the farmers start sustainable enterprises to
improve their standard of living.
Kinnear received dual Bachelor’s degrees in Finance and Accountancy in May 2009 and
is working for accounting firm KPMG in Chicago. At KPMG he hopes to gain the accounting experience, business savvy, and financial resources to one day set out on his own. “My
goal is to help entrepreneurs around the world by establishing incubators to support them
with financing, consulting, and infrastructure.”
For College of Business senior Jung-Wook Kim, the Steven N. Miller Entrepreneurial
Scholarship offered an opportunity that was not otherwise available to him.
“It’s increasingly difficult for international students to get scholarships,” explained Kim.
“Usually, you have to prove financial need. However, to attend an American university, you
have to prove you can pay tuition, or you risk losing your VISA. Because this scholarship was
based on a student’s entrepreneurial background, I was eligible. It really meant a lot because
it proves I have made progress in my activities like Engineers Without Borders and in my
education.”
Kim will graduate in May 2010 with Bachelor’s degrees in Finance, Accountancy, and
Management Science, with a minor in Statistics. “In the future, I hope to be able help people
who are less fortunate yet have potential to be entrepreneurs through their physical and mental
resources,” shared Kim who helped develop sustainable start-up ventures in Croatia with EWB.
Indeed, Ben Franklin would be proud that UI alumni and students are carrying on the
tradition he started so long ago. n

Colonel Tom Purple had just
returned from Iraq and was finishing a degree at the U.S. Army
War College when he received an
email that got his attention. The
University of Illinois College of Business
was offering scholarships for veterans interested in earning their MBA. Purple, who at
the time was the deputy director of human
resources for the Illinois National Guard,
was considering higher education options
that would help him gain additional strategic and leadership skills, and the program
looked like a perfect fit.
“It was an incredible opportunity to
earn a degree from a program that is so
highly regarded,” Purple said. He knew it
would be rigorous, but with the scholarship award Purple was able to concentrate
on the academic challenge rather than the
financial one. And, he said, it had significant personal and professional payoffs.
“It was personally challenging, especially focusing my military mind in a civilian environment because the problem-solving process and skill set is so different,” he
explained. “But I have to say that I learned
more on strategic thought and vision
through the MBA program than I had in
the military, and it’s made a difference in
the way I think and the way I do my job.”

more aware of the financial aspects of my
work and the implications to efficiency
and productivity. Everything I learned was
brand new to me, and if I didn’t understand something I could count on not only
the professors but the others on my team
who had business, math, and engineering
backgrounds to help me unbundle a problem. And sometimes my experience helped
them. Everyone was truly valued for what
they brought. It was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I couldn’t have
done it without the scholarship assistance.”
The financial assistance made a big difference to Major David Belfiore, too. But
it was the support of the faculty and staff
that was especially helpful to the Air Force
veteran, who started a new job as a services
account manager with General Electric
Healthcare the same day that he began his
MBA studies. “The way the program was
organized, the availability of technology,
the accessibility of the professors, and the
staff ’s commitment to handling the details
with the VA and GI Bill meant I just had
to go to school and go to work. They took
everything else off my plate, which made
things much easier.”
Major Matt Burden, who researched
all the Chicago-area MBA programs
before deciding on Illinois, agrees. “The
University’s commitment to veterans is
profound,” he said. “Plus, the Illinois
experience is so unique that other MBA
programs are now trying to mimic it.”
Burden credited the program’s emphasis
on both theory and practice and the class
trip to China with providing an exceptional opportunity that translated into
practical, useful knowledge that he could
directly apply in his job as senior director
of the Shedd Aquarium.
For Burden, who wrote The Blog of
War and was launching a book tour during the first week of classes, the ability
to review lectures via computer and the
group support was especially helpful.
“There were other life issues that came up
in our group,” he said. “One person lost
his job, another was going to be sent to
Afghanistan, and we all stepped in to help
each other manage the demands of the
program.”
Burden recalled some prophetic words
from Larry DeBrock, a professor in the
program and now dean of the College,
who told them during the first class
that they’d likely learn more from their
classmates than they would from him.
“The professors were great, but Larry was
right,” he said. “We learned so much from
each other, and that learning and those
relationships continue today. Without the
IVG and the scholarship, this wouldn’t
have been possible for me.”
Although this particular program has
ended, the opportunities available to veterans to earn a degree from the University
have not. “The College and the University
continue to provide support to our veterans
through the IVG benefit as well as federal
benefits through the Post-911 GI Bill,”
said Ikenberry. “It’s a mutually beneficial
relationship that provides veterans with
a world-class education and expands our
ranks of talented, committed alumni.” n
After World War II, ILLINOIS saw a tremendous influx of veterans seeking degrees in business and other disciplines.

Risatti has all the characteristics
of a visionary with a sixth sense for
taking advantage of what’s at hand
and staying one step ahead. When
she looked at colleges, she chose
the College of Business to follow
in the footsteps of her father who
received his Ph.D. in Geochemistry
from ILLINOIS. “My family lives
in Urbana. I wanted an easy transition,” she says, “I was going to the school
next door.” In her junior year, she joined
the Study Abroad Program and opted for
France, adding another language to her
repertoire. Deciding to open a bridal salon,
she chose a commercial downtown location
that she believed to be the future fashion
center of New York.
Risatti continues to step out of the
ordinary. In choosing the bridal gowns,
she culls her dresses from young, promising designers who appreciate the visibility
and remain loyal. Her shop is also unique,
located in the Meatpacking District of
New York City on the second floor of
a vintage building with tin ceilings. To
make customers feel “at home” she serves
refreshments in old world tea cups and displays jewelry in an antique armoire. “We
don’t attempt to be a Fifth Avenue store,”
she says. We’re in a district that’s up and
coming, with new restaurants, new condos
and off beat shops. Up and coming, like
Risatti herself. n

cites the transformation of Mickey from his

when he stood for the very American
qualities of endurance and optimism,
to Mickey’s later role as a scamp in the
cartoon Steamboat Willie and finally, to
the somewhat exalted position he occupies
today as something of a ringmaster to a cast
of Disney characters from Donald Duck
to Goofy. “Mickey can show us how to
adapt and, whatever the circumstances, the
importance of connecting with others.”
“This phenomenally popular, genial
cartoon character that wears shoes, shorts
and strange white gloves and has a pet dog
named Pluto has always been on the cusp
of change,” says Richart. “Mickey has
always believed life is an adventure, just
as I do.” n

L A RRY D E B R O C K
Dean, College of Business
Being a preeminent institution for
business education means we never
lose sight of what matters most—our
students, their education, and carrying
on the tradition of excellence that has
produced more than 50,000 loyal Illini.
It’s how we have kept the momentum
building for nearly 100 years.
The current class of undergraduates
has the strongest profile in our history, a truly amazing group
of young men and women destined to become leaders of
business and captains of industry. And I am pleased to report
that, notwithstanding the University admissions issues, we are
seeing an increase in the number and quality of applications
for next year.
Our world class faculty will work with these promising
students in bold surroundings to help them reach their
potential, but the process needs your engagement to make it a
success. We need your help.
A student’s exposure to working professionals who apply
business concepts daily gives them confidence and hones
their understanding for real-world application. The resources
you share helps us to provide everything from cutting-edge
software that is changing our financial industry to travel
abroad opportunities that change our student’s global
awareness and much more.
The advantages gained from your interactions with the
College translate to more successful job searches and stronger
career advancement. Your help is especially important as
the economy turns toward recovery because the College of
Business continues to be a major supplier of high quality talent
to the businesses and organizations in Illinois. The world is
changing and strong talent makes our businesses better able to
grow and adapt.
Also part of our momentum is the Business Instructional
Facility, which was just certified LEED Platinum by the U.S.
Green Building Council, their highest rating. As ILLINOIS’
first green building, BIF stands a testament to our leadership as
we all move toward a more responsible and sustainable world.
Your past support has put ILLINOIS on the map. Your
active engagement today will keep us there.”
Sincerely,
Larry

President, CBAA
Greetings fellow Illini! Some 200 alumni
gathered at the Homecoming Bash in
October to enjoy catching up with old
friends in the grand surroundings of
the Business Instructional Facility. If
you haven’t been to a “tailgate” in the
new building, you really should plan
to join us next year. The next major
alumni event will bring us together in
early January with the United Center Basketball Outing in
Chicago. Here we will have a chance to see an Illini team
with high expectations take on an always tough Gonzaga.
Proceeds from the event help support the Business Academic
Awards Fund.
In April we hope to set another attendance record as we
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Spring Luncheon event.
I’ll be there along with 800 or more other alumni. As the
College of Business Alumni Association president I hope you
will join me in supporting our biggest event of the year. Please
introduce yourself when you see me.
The CBAA Board is always open to creative new ideas
for getting alumni together for networking, camaraderie,
and mutual support. We encourage participation in as many
activities as you can make time for, and welcome you to serve
on a committee involving events of interest to you. Whether
it’s attending our next Art Event and Cocktail Party at the
Union League Club of Chicago or taking in a Roundtable at
the Illini Center, there are many ways to get involved with the
College of Business Alumni Association.
Sincerely,

Once retired, esteemed professors may become emeriti faculty and continue to contribute to
the teaching and research missions of the college. These cherished teachers have decades of
experience and an uncommon wisdom about the learning process.
Susan Cohen, who has taught since 1975, is well known for responding to her students, “The
correct answer is, it depends . . .” Her lessons about decision making models often center on
an insight that the “answer” depends crucially on how the problem is viewed—what assumptions
are made and how confidently numbers are chosen and applied. She says this insight is the
same today as it was 30 years ago, however, “the advent of personal computers has allowed us
to do real-time analysis that was not possible when I first started teaching. In fact, computing an
answer took a lot of work, so we had much less time to spend on the managerially more relevant
issue of interpretation. It is much more fun and rewarding to teach the material in the current
environment.”
Ken Perry also knows that how you think about a problem influences the answer you get. Since
1953 when Ken began as an assistant professor in Accountancy, he has been well known for
telling his students “don’t fight the problem” for which he often writes “DFTP” on their papers.
“I always get good students,” he says. “Some of them almost try too hard. They should back off and
avoid getting so involved in the problem that they make it difficult for themselves. I tell them to
go with the flow. My advice was, and is: DFTP”

Jim Gentry believes in creating powerful learning situations for his finance students through what
he calls the Live Case. In the 60s he started teaching College of Business students to prepare for
actual visits of a financial officer. “Back then it was basically a guest lecturer followed by a question
and answer session,” says Gentry. Now his classes are carefully choreographed to be dynamic
fast-paced learning environments for both students and the high level financial officers. “I know
when to jump into the discussion and create a powerful teaching moment.”
In December, a former student, Richard Jones ’73 emailed Gentry thirty-six years after
graduating to ask for his advice with a comment, “I would just like to say that your class and
teaching style was the best I experienced during my four years at U of I…”

Development Update
Dear Alumni and Friends,
We are often asked, “Why should I financially support the University when
the campus is funded by the State”? What a great question, and the fact
is, only approximately 3% of the College of Business’s budget comes from
the State. The remainder of our budget is funded entirely through tuition
dollars and private support. You might also be surprised to learn that no
State dollars were used to construct our new Business Instructional Facility!
In fact, our loyal alumni and friends, along with the support from our
corporate partners and the Student Sustainability Committee, helped us
to make the reality of a new building come true. The doors to the facility
have been open now for over a year, and the students are utilizing every
dollar you have given. Gifts help name classrooms, provide scholarships,
and directly support the Dean’s unrestricted fund. State finances are
further limited this year, therefore, your gift to the College will ensure that
every student will continue to receive the best educational experience
possible—from Business 101 to graduation.
Thank you for your generosity and support!
Best Regards,
Tina Howard
Assistant Dean of Development
