Mission in
MOTION
Red Cross workers distribute meals and water from the emergency response vehicle to a
mother and child whose home was damaged in the Louisville, MS tornado.
The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers,
donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to
turn compassion into action so that:
•
all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope;
•
our communities are ready and prepared for disasters;
•
everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products;
•
all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed;
•
in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills
to save lives.
The American Red Cross prevents and
alleviates human suffering in the face of
emergencies by mobilizing the power of
volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Greetings!
We are pleased to present the 2014 Annual Report for the American Red Cross
Mississippi Region. Nowhere does the theme “We are ONE Red Cross” ring truer than in
our own Mississippi Region, where time and time again, we are asked to come together
as ONE to accomplish our mission. Our staff, volunteers and donors make it possible for
us to deliver care and services every single day to nearly 3 million Mississippians in 80
counties. We are very proud of the tremendous accomplishments we have achieved over
this past year.
When severe storms caused flooding in several communities and 11 tornadoes
ripped through Mississippi this past spring taking lives and destroying homes and
businesses, Mississippi Red Cross workers were there … immediately. Together with our
partner organizations and shared resources from other Red Cross regions, we made sure
families had what they needed to begin to put their lives back together. Throughout these
disasters, generous donors from across the region stepped in to help fund the response
and recovery efforts and provide volunteer assistance.
Whether it be wrapping a child in a blanket at the site of her burning house, listening
to a family explain how they couldn’t have made it through the first night after a tornado
were it not for our Red Cross shelter, supporting a military member’s family, or teaching
adults advanced lifesaving skills, Mississippi Red Cross workers always manage to take
care of those in need.
This past year, we have also successfully supported national and regional priorities
by helping transform the Red Cross into a leaner and more efficient organization that is
better prepared for the future. We have been able to do this while continuing to remain
focused on our humanitarian mission.
The American Red Cross helps people in need every single day, not just during
large scale disasters. We are deeply grateful to our donors and volunteers who selflessly
support our work so together we can be there providing people in crisis with relief for
today and hope for tomorrow.
In Grateful Appreciation,
Sandra Hodge, CEO
Mississippi Region
Curt Goldacker, Chair
Regional Leadership Council

Disaster Services
From house fires to tornadoes, we are ready to respond to disaster seven days a week, every day of
the year in communities across the state, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at
no cost to those in need. The Mississippi Region is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross regions
that work together to respond to large-scale relief efforts, such as the devastating spring storms and
multiple tornadoes that ripped through Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Florida in the spring.

Early in April, disaster relief teams were on the ground in
multiple counties impacted by severe weather including
a tornado that touched down in Covington County and
localized flooding in multiple counties.

EF-4 tornado
that ripped
through
Louisville, MS
on April 28.
Later in April, over a 3-day span, Mississippi was again
pummeled by large hail, winds and tornadoes. This time,
11 tornadoes touched down leaving extensive damage to
lives and homes in Louisville, Pearl, Tupelo, Columbus and
multiple other communities. In battered neighborhoods
across the state, Red Cross workers quickly mobilized
to open shelters where they served nourishing meals,
distributed comfort and relief items, and provided a
dry, safe place to sleep. Other workers were circulating
through neighborhoods in emergency response vehicles
assessing the damage, while mental health workers
met with individuals and offered a listening ear and
emotional support.
Following the initial response, our trained volunteers also
met one-on-one with residents to guide them through
their recovery by creating tailored recovery plans and
connecting them with available resources from other
agencies and partner organizations.
Home Fires
Home fires are the most common disaster to which
the Red Cross responds. On average, Mississippi Red
Cross responds to 5 home fires every day. Although
many of these fires do not make the evening news as
the tornadoes or other large-scale events do, they are
devastating for those who have suddenly lost their
homes, possessions and sense of security. In fiscal year
2014, we assisted 2,104 community members/families
affected by fires and other local disasters.
The dedicated efforts of more than 400
workers enabled Mississippi Red Cross to:
• Open and staff 6 shelters with 678 overnight stays;
• Open and staff 9 Emergency Aid Stations;
• Serve 47,223 meals and snacks;
• Conduct 2,851 health and mental health interactions;
• Distribute more than 14,000 relief items and clean-up kits;
• Provide disaster response and recovery services to 709
individuals/families.

Serving the Military, Their
Families and Veterans
The Red Cross Mississippi Region gives support to
active-duty military members, National Guard and
Reserve members, veterans and their families. We
provide pre-deployment briefings called “Get to Know
Us Before You Need Us,” and connect families with
needed resources when their loved ones are deployed.
Deployed service members also count on us to deliver
emergency messages, such as notification of an illness
or death in the family. Military families rely on these
verified communications, which help commanders
decide when to grant leave. We also provide support for
the sick and wounded at military and veterans hospitals
and assistance in obtaining emergency financial support.
Last year, 10,238 individuals in the
Mississippi Region learned critical skills
through Red Cross courses.
• 8,716 trained in first aid/CPR/AED
• 1,475 trained in water safety
• 47 trained in Babysitting Basic courses
Preparing for the Unexpected
The Mississippi Region also teaches families,
organizations and corporations how to be prepared for
emergencies through free educational presentations.
Last year, hundreds of people attended community
disaster education and preparedness programs through
our local Mississippi Red Cross Chapters.
American Red Cross Blood Services supplies about 40
percent of the country’s blood, providing a lifesaving
service to trauma victims, cancer patients, those with
chronic conditions and others.
Boots to Business is a program created by the
American Red Cross and MGM Resorts International
that helps service members take their experiences from
the field and translate them into skills that can be used in
management positions with MGM Resorts International.
The program provides training, resumé creation
and review, and a special workshop on coping with
deployments for families and networking with military
employees and veterans.
Red Cross supports military, veterans
and their families
• Assisted 1,492 families through the “Get to Know Us
Before You Need Us” program
Between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014,
Red Cross Blood Services collected 11,493
units of blood in South Mississippi.
Every year, the Mississippi Region teaches people the
lifesaving skills they need to protect themselves and their
families, including first aid, CPR and water safety.
We offer these trainings in
multiple ways: online training,
traditional classroom settings
with instructional aides and
full-service courses, where
we bring the training to your
workplace or organization.
• Provided 1,692 services to military members, veterans
and families, including emergency communications.
• Assisted more than 100 veterans through the
Boots to Business program

Across the Country and Beyond
Answering Crisis with Action
From the Oso, Washington mudslide to the California
wildfires and multiple other natural events and humancaused tragedies, the American Red Cross is there to
provide communities with the help and support they
need, such as shelter, food, health and emotional support
services, and bulk distribution of items to meet the basic
needs of those affected. Red Cross workers also meet
one-on-one to develop a personalized recovery plan.
Addressing Needs on a
Global Scale
The American Red Cross works with its partners in the
global Red Cross and Red Crescent network each day to
meet needs around the world. This includes responding
to disasters and other crises; preparing communities for
future emergencies and improving their resiliency; and
addressing critical health needs.
Throughout the past year, American
Red Cross had more than 150 disaster
operations over the past 12 months (level
2 and above), including operating 300
shelters for more than 9,000 registered
clients. And, across the nation, Red Cross
teams responded to more than 50,000
home fires!
New Digital Tools to Help
America Prepare
In addition to online courses, such as the Babysitting
Basics course for teenagers, the Red Cross has
introduced apps that provide critical help at the touch
of a screen.
Joining the Red Cross First Aid, Hurricane, Tornado,
Wildfire, Flood and Earthquake apps this past year are
two new apps – the free Swim app, which provides the
latest in water safety guidance and tracking progress for
learners; the Pet First Aid app for $.99 puts veterinary
advice for everyday emergencies at your fingertips.

supported with food, relief supplies and basic health care
to those affected by the continuing crisis in Syria. The
Measles and Rubella Initiative — a partnership including
the American Red Cross, U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, United Nations Foundation,
UNICEF and World Health Organization — has helped
reduce measles death worldwide by vaccinating more
than 1.1 billion children in 80 countries.
