Holiday design, design architecture
or the hopeless attempt to escape
from a seemingly authentic furniture classic
Not all of us live the way one has actually imagined: the garden is much too small, on the
balcony, one can understand every word the neighbours utter, the smell of grilled meat or
exotic tobacco from residents on the level below settles in one’s own bedroom, the traffic on the adjoining road, the children next door or the TV of the deaf pensioner on the
floor above become louder and louder and no one told you that the beautiful view would
be obstructed shortly. In such moments, shop windows, brochures and advertising banners
of designer shops and kitchen studios are consoling. They stir up the hope that any botched housing situation can be pimped up with simple means into a dream domicile: with
designer furniture! Even though the view across the Caldera of Santorini with its whitewashed houses, picturesque windmills and the steel blue sea was as obviously fitted with
Photoshop in the background of the dining area with Panton Chairs or the plastic chairs
by Charles and Ray Eames as the panorama of the Austrian mountain range on the next
page and the view over the lights of Hamburg’s port on the page after next – these pictures awake a desire in us: the desire for a stylish ambience in an outstanding environment.

So if the environment isn’t quite as outstanding, we at least afford the stylish ambience:
a group of design classics, preferably the Eames Chair with the white plastic seating shell supported by a chrome-plated wire tube frame from one of the brochures. It goes without saying
that we cannot afford the original for more than 1,000 Euros per piece if we want a group of
six, and we need not tell our guests that we ordered the chair on the internet for 85 Euros.
Something we couldn’t know: each time we are sitting at the computer, an advertising banner
pops up on the edge of the screen, pushes itself to the middle of the text and relentlessly
reminds us: “Charles Eames Plastic Chair 85 Euros instead of 385 Euros!“ This is not enough.
Not long ago, I had a professional appointment with a consulting firm for premium properties.
I was asked to go to the meeting room and what did I find there: eight Eames Chairs with white
seating shells on chrome-plated steel tubes were standing around the table.
When the holiday planning is due we decide for something very special: Holiday architecture
with exclusive design classics. Just once experiencing an interior that one’s own four walls do
not provide. Expectations are high, renowned interior specialists have after all equipped the
designer apartment according to their preferences. When we enter the holiday apartment, our

Lake “Traunsee” should actually be called “Traumsee”, which in English means “dream lake”,
someone obviously misspelled the name at some time. That doesn’t matter because it has
remained to be a “dream lake”. If someone should know, it’s the guests staying in the two
houses, which have been nestling up against the steep slope above the lake since 2014: Mira
Thal Buchleitner and Michael Buchleitner, an architect couple with children from Vienna, took on
the role of clients and made their dream of a lakeside house come true. “The experience of being a
client sharpened our view of the architects much better than any coaching”, chuckles Buchleitner.
The objective was to create a retreat combining the comfort of a modern wooden house with the
appeal of the surrounding natural and cultural landscape. The spatial arrangement of the two
wooden cubes with many vistas relates to the concept of the characteristic dispersed settlements
in the region. The buildings not only serve the clients as a personal refuge but are also available
for holiday guests: “We want to offer everyone who appreciates demanding architecture and
furnishings the possibility to enjoy this exceptional place”, says Mira Buchleitner.

Zalig Aan Zee is in English “blissful by the sea”. This promising motto unites a group of five holiday
lettings in Knokke-Heist, a town regarded as the most fashionable seaside resort on the Belgian
coast. The former fisherman’s houses vary in size and provide room for six to 16 persons. During
the refurbishment, Kathleen Cassiers and her husband had walls removed, beams and brickwork
exposed and old floors polished. Kathleen saw about the furnishing and the marketing, while her
husband – who is an engineer - came up with unusual technical solutions for the renovation: building services are hidden behind decorative wall panels and integrated into invisible false walls, with
power lines and connections still being easily accessible.
The structures of the five houses resemble each other: the ground floor accommodates the airy,
open-plan living room with a kitchen, which is directly accessed from the street. With its wood-clad
walls and the stone floor the garden with a lounge corner and a fireplace appears like an additional
room. The bedrooms on the first and the attic floor are bright and quiet. Kathleen Cassiers, who
has a great passion for renovating and interior decoration but also is a mother of three daughters,
has specifically conceived the Zalig Aan Zee houses for families with children. The beds are built like
bunks and some of them can be pulled out.
It is amazing what can be done with untreated boards and the combination of casual sofas, open
fireplaces and sophisticated built-in units is a delight.
Visitors can get to the beach by bicycle or by foot. An excursion to the nearby City of Brugge with
its romantic, Venetian-style old town is absolutely essential – only to dedicate oneself to the great
variety of water sports in Knokke the next day. In winter, too, visitors can be blissful by the sea: an
extended weekend works miracles when you let the breeze completely clear your mind.
The furnishings are very relaxed. The predominantly used materials and colours are closely
related to the sea and the dunes, for example
recycled wood of old scaffolding, boats or
jetsam, whose patina shows traces of their
previous use.

The “border crosser’s house“
peeps out from between the trees.
In dem kleinen Dorf Nothweiler, zwischen dem deutschen Pfälzerwald und den französischen Vogesen, steht das Bauernhaus von 1935 mit dem treffenden Namen „Grenzgängerhaus“. Dieser Name
bezieht sich nicht nur auf seine Bewohner und die Gäste, die das Haus dies- und jenseits der Grenze
zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich seit jeher aufgenommen hat. Seit der Renovierung 2014 hat der
Name noch eine zusätzliche Bedeutung gewonnen: Das charakteristische Gebäude wandert mühelos
zwischen den Zeiten und Stilen und wurde einer ganz neuen Nutzung zugeführt. Heute wird hier nicht
mehr gegen Wind und Wetter und ums Überleben gekämpft, sondern alles steht ganz im Zeichen der
Erholung. Das ehemalige Wohnhaus und die Scheune wurden in zwei Ferienwohnungen verwandelt,
die zur Entspannung und zum Müßiggang einladen. Bis zu zwölf Personen finden hier ihr Plätzchen,
in einem Ambiente, das von Holz und Licht und einer gelungenen Kombination aus Pragmatismus und
diskreter Lust am zeitgenössischen Design geprägt ist. Bei der Renovierung lautete die gemeinsame
Devise der Bauherren und des Architekten Jürgen Sebastian: Alt und Neu verbinden und in Einklang
bringen, Substanz wahren und mit dem passenden Design ergänzen. Holzfußböden, Linoleum und
Kalkputz kamen als ursprüngliche Materialien neu zum Einsatz, die Fensterläden wurden entsprechend
Farbige Stühle und Lampen sind Blickfänger in der
großzügigen Küche. Durchbrüche machen das Innere
weit, der Schreibplatz ist eine kleine Insel für sich.

In the small village of Nothweiler, located between the German part of Pfälzerwald and the French Vosges, there is a farmhouse dating from 1935 aptly named “Grenzgängerhaus” (border crosser’s house).
The name refers to the residents and guests from either sides of the German-French border this house
has always accommodated. Since its refurbishment in 2014, however, the name has gained another
meaning: the characteristic building effortlessly moves between the times and styles and has been
adapted to suit a completely new use. Today, this is no longer a place where people struggle to survive
against wind and weather, instead, the emphasis is very much on recreation. The former residential
building and the barn were turned into two holiday apartments, which invite relaxation and idleness.
Up to twelve people can find a snug little place, in an ambience that is characterised by wood and light
as well as a successful combination of pragmatism and a discreet interest in contemporary design. The
common motto of the client and his architect Jürgen Sebastian for the renovation was: combining and
reconciling the old and the new, safeguarding the building structure and complementing it with an
appropriate design. Wooden flooring, linoleum and lime plaster were again used as original materials,
the window shutters were replaced in keeping with the original predecessors and new fireplaces heat
the apartments in addition to the underfloor heating. On three levels, the barn conveys the flair of a
loft. Both apartments can be combined. They have both a well well-equipped kitchen and large dining
tables for convivial gatherings.
Children of all ages are welcome guests. You can spend all day in the large garden, if you are not
exploring the land of castles, discovering yet another lake in the biosphere reserve, climbing between
treetops at a dizzy height or experiencing how people worked deep underground in the Notweiler ore
mine not too long ago. On top of that, Palatinate enjoys a widely accepted reputation as a wine region:
within a 20-kilometre radius, no less than 25 vineyards offering wine tastings can be reached from
Nothweiler. The oenological experience can be endlessly continued in the “Grenzgängerhaus”.

Auf der nächsten Ebene gibt es ein Schlafzimmer mit direktem Blick auf den Auerbach. Das großzügige Bad liegt direkt daneben. Das WC hat ein mit den Architekten befreundeter Künstler gestaltet.
Auf der letzten Ebene, der Galerie, ist ein zweiter Schlafbereich untergebracht. Während man sich
in der freistehenden Badewanne räkelt, gibt das große Dachfenster den Blick in den Himmel frei.
Die Photovoltaikanlage auf dem Dach produziert mehr Strom, als das Haus am Auerbach selbst verbraucht, weshalb das Nachbarhaus mit Strom und Wärme gleich mitversorgt wird.
Fürs erste Abendessen stehen die Zutaten am Anreisetag schon im Kühlschrank, ein Frühstückspaket
wird auf Wunsch vor der Tür platziert. Alles weitere ergibt sich – zwischen netten Läden und traditionellen Wirtshäusern im idyllischen Oberaudorf und urigen Almhütten weiter oben. Die Wanderwege
beginnen vor der Haustür. Einen Geländewagen kann man mitmieten.

The ideal house for two, and even if you are on your own you won’t get lost in here. Interior
architect Christine Arnhard and architect Markus Eck have fulfilled their wish of a dream house
on a towel-sized site. The holiday home in the Upper Bavarian Inn Valley, which they built uncompromisingly according to their personal wishes, is only four big steps wide. The result is a
loft on five levels with solid walls made of wood and clay.
The airily stacked up rooms are connected with each other via staircase. Except for the WC, no
room has a door, all areas are open and connected with each other. Unexpected perspectives
make the building a vivid place, with nets instead of walls and dramatic light incidences on grey
walls or asymmetric wooden surfaces. The interior decoration is lovingly selected, books, CDs and
objects on the shelves arouse the guests’ curiosity about the hosts. The layout of routes into and
through the house is also quite unusual: the entrance area with a garage directly adjoins the eatin kitchen, which can be opened up with two sliding doors on two sides. Two hovering terraces
extend the interiors towards the garden. The living area with a view through the panorama window to the Spitzstein, the local mountain, is located above. On cooler days, the stove gives off a
pleasant heat and the unparalleled scent of wood to the entire house. The wall heating and the
additional underfloor heating in the bathroom also ensure everybody’s comfort and wellbeing.
The next level accommodates a bedroom which affords a view to the stream called Auerbach.
The en-suite bathroom directly adjoins the bedroom. The WC was designed by an artist friend of
the architects. A second sleeping area is laid out on the gallery above, and the attic window allows views to the sky when stretching out in the freestanding bathtub. The photovoltaic system

Die Rummelsburger Bucht in Berlin ist eine Bucht am See, mitten in der Stadt, mit einem Wahrzeichen,
das seit 140 Jahren die Umgebung charakterisiert: Ein 22 Meter hoher Turm prägt seit 1875 ein Berliner
Wohn- und Erholungsgebiet in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zum Szenekiez Friedrichshain. Das Gebäude
wurde nach den Entwürfen des Berliner Architekten Hermann Blankenstein errichtet und diente der Versorgung der umliegenden Arresthäuser mit Trinkwasser. Heute ist Rummelsburg eine beliebte und vielfach
ausgezeichnete Wohngegend, in fußläufiger Entfernung zum kilometerlangen Uferwanderweg.
Der Architekt Matthias Beyer-Schubert ist mit der Gegend bestens vertraut: Er initiierte zwischen 2000
und 2012 gemeinsam mit Katrin Schubert zahlreiche Baugruppenprojekte in der Rummelsburger Bucht
und auf der Halbinsel Stralau in Berlin und plante über 200 individuelle Townhouses rund um die Bucht.
2010 ließ ihm das räumliche Potential des verfallenden Wasserturms keine Ruhe mehr. Er entwickelte ein
Konzept für eine neue Nutzung: Das Denkmal sollte bewohnbar werden, für Gäste, die Berlin aus völlig

Rummelsburg Bay in Berlin is a bay of a lake in the middle of the city, featuring a landmark, which has been
characterising the surrounding area for 140 years: a 22-metre high tower has distinguished the residential
and recreational area in Berlin in the immediate proximity of the trendy Friedrichshain neighbourhood
since 1875. The building was constructed according to plans by Berlin-based architect Hermann Blankenstein and provided the surrounding prisons with drinking water. Today, Rummelsburg is a popular and
repeatedly awarded residential area, within walking distance from the kilometre-long lakeside footpath.
Architect Matthias Beyer-Schubert is very familiar with the area: together with Katrin Schubert he initiated
numerous joint building projects at the Rummelsburg Bay and on the Stralau Peninsular in Berlin between
2000 and 2012 and has planned more than 200 individual townhouses around the bay. In 2010, the
spatial potential of the dilapidated water town constantly occupied his mind. He developed a concept for
a new use: the monument should become habitable, for guests who want to experience Berlin from a
completely new perspective. It took one year until the monument preservation authority and the building
authority granted him the required permissions and the structural engineering calculations had been completed. All load-bearing ceilings and staircases required their complete new construction. Openings had
to be cut into the metre-thick walls to bring daylight into the tower. Steel structures for balconies on the
upper level and an ambulatory on four sides at the tip of the tower presented additional challenges for all
parties involved. Since 2015, the tower has been available for holidaymakers. It is a domicile for maximum
four people where tradition and modernism are ideally balanced.
Beyer-Schubert, father of five children, loves a clear, minimalist design vocabulary and robust, durable
materials such as fair-faced concrete, steel and brickwork. Five levels, each with ceiling heights ranging
between four and 5.40 metres, are linked via straight flights of stairs and gallery levels. Each level has
a floor area of approx. 25 square metres and is assigned a special function: the entrance hall on Level
1 provides access to the terrace and the small private garden. Level 2 accommodates the eat-in kitchen
bathed in light with two balconies facing east and west as well as a separate gallery. Level 3 is the
generous bathroom floor, and Level 5 is reserved for living, with a fireplace and a continuous balcony
all-around, where guests can marvel at a spectacular 360-degree panorama view across Berlin: from the
TV Tower in Berlin-Mitte to the Big Wheel in the Treptow Park and further to the Spree water landscape.

darunter liegende Schichten freigibt. Als Kontrast zum Grau der Fichtenstämme wurden alle Fenster
mit rostigen Laibungen aus Cortenstahl eingefasst. Die beiden Materialien bilden mit der weißen
Rinde der vielen Birken einen spannungsvollen Dreiklang.
Auch die Einrichtung orientiert sich an der zylindrischen Form der Räume. Dies stellte den Architekten und Bauherrn vor neue Herausforderungen, was Fenster und Türen, Möbel und Einbauten
betraf. Weiß in allen denkbaren Nuancen ist die vorherrschende Farbe in den Innenbereichen, was
die Farben der umgebenden Landschaft hervorhebt und verstärkt. Die Fenster sind die Rahmen für
die Bilder, die sich draußen abspielen. Alle Innenwände sind mit rohen, weiß gestrichenen Holzleisten und -brettern verkleidet. Als Kontrast sind alle Möbel, Einbauten, Leuchten und Armaturen in
Eiche und Messing ausgeführt. Die Betten in den Schlafräumen haben sanft gerundete Oberflächen
in geölter Eiche, ebenso wie der integrierte Schreibtisch. Höchstes Kunsthandwerk und scheinbar
unbehandelte Materialien treten in einen spannungsvollen Dialog. Was den künftigen Gästen wahrscheinlich verborgen bleiben wird, ist der „geheime Raum“ im Haus. Der durfte in dieser Kinderwelt
natürlich nicht fehlen, ist aber Erwachsenen nicht zugänglich...

The interior design is also oriented by the cylindrical shape of the rooms. This layout confronted
the architect and client with new challenges as regards windows and door, furniture and builtin units. White in all conceivable nuances predominates in the interiors, so that the colours of
the surrounding landscape are accentuated and emphasised. The windows act as frames for
the pictures happening outside. All interior walls are clad with raw, white painted wood strips
and boards.
As a contrast against the interior cladding, the furniture, fixtures, luminaires and fittings are
made of oak and brass. The beds in the sleeping areas are designed with gently curved surfaces
and built of oiled oak, just as the integrated desk. Excellent handicraft and seemingly untreated
materials engage in an exciting dialogue. What will probably remain hidden from future guests
is the “secret room” in the house. This was, of course, not to be forgotten in this child’s world,
but it is also accessible for adults...

On a hilltop, the small, perfectly circular
town of Locorotondo sits like a crown.
Wenn man auf der Dachterrasse der Casa Via Garibaldi sitzt und aufschaut, hat man den Glockenturm
der Chiesa Madre direkt vor sich, dreht man den Kopf, erstreckt sich das Dächermeer von Locorotondo
vor dem glücklichen Betrachter. Man hört den Nachbarn singen und die Frau nebenan mit den Töpfen
klappern, lauscht Unterhaltungen unten auf der Straße und stellt sich vor, wer die Menschen sind, die
sich begrüßen und auf ihren Motorrollern vorbeiknattern.
Bernd Habersang und Teresa Santostasi, seine aus Apulien stammende Frau, haben das Haus komplett
renoviert. Es ist das zweite Haus, das sie in Apulien neu zum Leben erweckt haben, – das erste ist
die Casa Vico Fiscaiolo in Monopoli, ein paar Kilometer von Locorotondo entfernt am Meer gelegen.
Die neue Wohnung, in der sich bis zu vier Personen wie wahre Italiener fühlen dürfen, entwickelt sich
über zwei Stockwerke, die der typischen lokalen Bauweise folgen. Die Wohnung mit den typischen
Gewölbedecken ist eigentümlich verschachtelt. Schöne alte Zement-Fliesenböden funktionieren wie
ein Leitsystem, und das Licht spielt an den Wänden. Das untere Geschoss mit Wohnraum und SchlafAlkove hat ein Kreuzgewölbe, die obere Etage, in der die Küche, das Bad, der Essbereich und ein zweiter Schlafraum untergebracht sind, hat ein Tonnengewölbe. Dank der dicken Mauern bleibt es hier auch

When you sit on the rooftop terrace of Casa Via Garibaldi and raise your eyes you look directly
at the bell tower of Chiesa Madre, and when you turn your head, the roof landscape of Locorotondo extends in front of the merry viewer. The apartment with the typical vaulted ceilings is
strangely nested. Beautiful old cement tile floors act as a guidance system and light reflections
are playing on the walls. You can hear the neighbour singing and the lady next door clattering
with her pots and pans, you listen to people chatting in the street below and you imagine the
people greeting each other and rattling past on their motor scooters.
Bernd Habersang and his Apulian wife, both are architects, have completely refurbished the
house. It is the second house in Apulia they revived – the first one is Casa Vico Fiscaiolo in
Monopoli, a few kilometres away from Locorotondo at the sea. The new apartment, where up
to four people may feel like genuine Italians, extends across two levels, which were built in
keeping with the typical local construction method. The lower level accommodating a living
room and sleeping alcove beds has a cross vault, whereas the upper level with a kitchen,

Amid meadows, forests and steep rock faces, in the middle of the South Tyrolean Fanes-Sennes-Prags
Nature Park, a mountain house was built in 2011 to replace a ramshackle hunting lodge at an altitude
of 1,400 metres – but under different auspices. Following tradition, the Mountainlodge Tamersc is constructed entirely of wood, both inside and outside. Local materials wherever you look: wool felt and linen
are the prevalent fabrics, built-in fitments and floors are made of larch wood, Swiss pine was used for
the dining table and the kitchen. Bruneck-based office EM2 Architekten designed the lodge, which reinterprets the former hunting lodge as a reduced, linear building. Here, the traditional log building method
does without the usual, massive projecting corner joints. Also new is the distinctive window solution as a
stylistic element: horizontal, asymmetrically arranged viewing slits in the upper part structure the façade
and direct the light into the bedrooms in a rather unusual and almost meditative way. On the ground floor,
wide panorama windows open up views to the surrounding nature and immerse the living area in light.
Large wooden sliding shutters serve as sun protection if required.

privaten Freunden zu Besuch zu sein. Ursprünglich als Eigenheim geplant, öffnete das Haus als sehr individuelles Bed & Breakfast erstmals 2010 seine Tore. Das Frühstück wird aus den Zutaten zubereitet, die
der Garten oder die benachbarten Märkte bereithalten. Malvin Tyler und seine Frau produzieren Olivenöl
und ernten Safran – und geizen mit den wunderbaren Ergebnissen nicht: In der umgebauten Scheune ist
eine Sommerküche untergebracht, in der die Gäste auch gern selbst Hand anlegen dürfen. Der weitläufige
ummauerte Garten und der 95 Quadratmeter große Salzwasserpool stehen allen Gästen zur Verfügung.
