NBC O&Os ADD NEWS, RENEW ELLEN SHOW
MORE NEWS AVAILS IN ELECTION YEAR
As we move into a big election year, the NBC Owned
Television Stations division of NBCUniversal announced
that stations in four of its big markets will add an additional
hour of local news at 4:00 pm beginning in late May. That
means more avails as political advertising heats up ahead
of the November election. Most of the NBC O&Os already
have 4:00 pm newscasts, but NBCU says this will add
more than 1,000 hours of local news annually, in addition
to the 3,000 new hours of local news added since 2011.
The move on the news front comes
as the NBC Owned Television Stations
announced the renewal of The Ellen
DeGeneres Show from Warner Bros.
Domestic Television Distribution for an
additional three years through the 2019-2020 TV season.
Ellen has been a daytime anchor for the 10 NBC O&Os for
more than a decade.
With the launch of the 4:00 newscasts at WNBC New
York, KNBC Los Angeles, WTVJ Miami and WVIT HartfordNew Haven, Ellen will move back to 3:00 pm, preceded by
The Steve Harvey Show at 2:00 pm.
The daytime schedule changes were announced as
NBCU’s syndication arm confirmed the long-rumored
cancellation of The Meredith Vieira Show after the current
second season. The former Today co-host won’t get to rest
when the show wraps up, since she’ll be heading to Rio
de Janeiro as part of the team for NBC’s coverage of the
Summer Olympics.
NAB INVESTS IN BIG DATA STARTUP
Trade associations are no longer limiting themselves
to lobbying lawmakers and running trade shows. The
National Association of Broadcasters announced that
its technology division, NAB Labs, has invested in Yet
Analytics, a Baltimore-based startup that leverages open
source technologies using methods originally developed
within the U.S. Department of
Defense (DoD). Details of the
investment were not disclosed.

Chevrolet dealers will have a new incentive program to
shoot for this year, as year-over-year increases in sales of
the Cruze, Malibu and Silverado can be worth as much as
$1,000 per unit to dealers who beat a sales target by 20%
or more. The bonuses are going to these models at a time
when “crossovers practically sell themselves,” one dealer
told Automotive News. Chevy is also trying to discourage
dealers from selling new vehicles with open recalls—
deductions to dealer incentives will be imposed if a dealer

quality is high today, the extended service
contract remains a big money-maker for
dealerships, with the latest data finding 26% of new vehicle
buyers and 40% of used-vehicle buyers are also buying
service contracts. An exec at Zurich Insurance says the
reason service contract sales have stayed high is the
growing use of electronics in vehicles. “Our penetrations
continue to go up in service contracts because customers
are concerned about in-vehicle technology failure, he
commented……Supermarket News reports Safeway is
continuing with an effort to open more small-format stores,
as small as 20,000 square feet……Pizza Hut is introducing
a $5 Flavor Menu with several choices available for $5 if
a customer buys at least two of them……Alcoholic “hard”
root beer continues to grow as a factor in the beverage
market and Louisiana-based Abita Brewing Company is
the latest to introduce one, Bayou Bootlegger Hard Root
