WELCOME
A Message from Our Executive Director
For 33 years now, Part of the Solution (POTS) has
helped tens of thousands of individuals throughout the Bronx and New York City move away from
the imminent crises of poverty and take steps towards greater stability and self-sufficiency. For
the last three years, I have had the privilege of
serving as Executive Director, and I am energized
and motivated every day by the contributions of
all members the of POTS’ community to provide
support for our neighbors in need.
POTS is located in one of the poorest communities in the nation where hunger, homelessness,
and developmental or educational delays are
all too common. While no two stories are alike,
most individuals and families come through our
door because of an immediate need or crisis:
the monthly paycheck cannot support an entire
family, an eviction notice presents the imminent
prospect of homelessness, the apartment they
share does not provide a functional shower or a
safe mail box. POTS’ bedrock has been to address these immediate crises in a dignified and
compassionate way. As POTS assists individuals
in meeting these basic needs, we look to focus
our efforts on additional long-term interventions
to bring about stability for our neighbors.
With your support, the future of POTS will be
marked by more client successes and greater
stability for countless individuals in the Bronx. In
the last year, POTS completed a five year strategic plan that maintains the critical work we’ve
been a part of for three decades while building
renewed focus on the work we can do to promote
long-term stability for POTS clients. As part of
that, we are excited to add workforce development to our comprehensive suite of services over
the next few years. Together, POTS will grow and
improve as a ‘one-stop shop’ meeting the needs
of the community in a dignified and respectful
environment.
This history of service and future success would
not be possible without a diverse and generous
community of supporters. Together, you, we …
can be part of the solution.
Sincerely,
Christopher A. Bean

VISION
For a Diverse Community, a Different Kind of Solution
To walk through the Bronx is to see an
incredible amount of diversity: not just in
culture and language, but also in story,
in circumstance and in need.
To answer those many needs, we have
created a mosaic of services, big and small,
simple and complex, which come together
to create POTS. Through our unique “onestop shop” model, we seek to provide clients
with the widest variety of services possible
under one roof, including:
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
Community Dining Room
Barbershop
Mail Services
Grocery-style Food Pantry
Shower Facilities
Retail-style Clothing Closet
Intensive Case Management
Legal Clinic
Immigration Assistance
Back-to-School Supplies
Homework Help
Nutrition and Cooking Classes
Holiday Meals and Gifts
Medical and Dental Clinic On-site
As a part of POTS’ supportive and
empowering environment, our staff also link
clients with peer organizations within our
network to ensure every individual receives
the help they need. Anyone who turns to
POTS in crisis will leave with help, hope and
a chance at improved stability.
Above all, we strive to create a professional
and hospitable environment where every
interaction is based on compassion and
respect. Only through this style of service
are we able to help restore the human
dignity that can be eroded by poverty.

NEED
A Community in Crisis, Families at Risk
Dinner on the table, or new school
supplies? Hot water for a shower, or a
child’s haircut? Heat in the cold of winter, or
medication? These are the kinds of choices
that POTS’ clients are forced to make every
day, struggling to keep the pieces of their
lives together despite circumstances that
might break them apart.
The challenges faced by our poor and
working-poor neighbors are alarming:
>> 400,000 people are in need, and 2 in 5
children live in poverty
>> The unemployment rate is 11.2%
Living under such stressful circumstances
takes a physical toll as well:
>> One in 4 residents are in poor or only
fair health
>> Nearly 10% of babies are born with low
birth weights
>> Almost 20% of Bronx residents lack
health insurance
The extreme and multi-layered needs
of our community mandate the unique,
multi-faceted approach to service delivery
that POTS has developed.
>> Less than 15% of adults over the age of
25 have a bachelor’s degree, and 30% did
not graduate high school
>> The average apartment costs $1,250
per month

RESULTS
Rebuilding Lives, Piece by Piece
In 2014, POTS helped over 25,000 people,
8,000 of them children. That’s more than
triple the number we helped just 5 years
ago. This is a wonderful testament to the
strength of POTS’ supporters. But it’s
175,000
650,000
also an indication that the difficulties our
community faces have only become more
serious. Here are a few of our highlights—
points of pride, and food for thought.
Results, By the Numbers:
meals served in the Community Dining Room
nutritious meals provided by groceries from the Food Pantry—100%
containing fresh produce
4,000
people helped by the Mail and Shower Facilities, Barbershop,
and Clothing Closet
3,000
children and adults received Back-to-School Supplies, Thanksgiving turkeys,
and Holiday gifts

$6,000,000
households received legal representation that helped stabilize housing,
preventing eviction and homelessness
people received counseling, information and referrals that helped them access shelters,
drug or alcohol treatment, health services, financial counseling, educational programs,
immigration services and job training
received by POTS clients in annual benefits as a result of screening, application assistance
and legal representation to access public benefits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit,
SNAP, Health Insurance and Social Security, generating significant economic activity for
the low-income community POTS serves

COMMITMENT
A Wealth of Volunteers, A World of Difference
Just as the community we serve is a diverse
and varied group, our volunteers are a
mosaic of backgrounds and talents, all
working in concert to be part of the solution.
In 2014, close to 4,000 volunteers gave
30,000 hours of dedicated service. Many
individuals and organizations were
instrumental in delivering services and
providing donated resources to benefit the
POTS community. From the dozen
volunteers needed to run the Community
Dining Room on a daily basis, to the
volunteer attorney assisting the Legal Clinic
on high volume days, the POTS community
benefits greatly from the kindness,
commitment and skill of
its volunteers.
POTS volunteers come from the
community of people that we serve as
well as educational institutions, religious
organizations, corporations, and civic and
community groups. In addition to providing
hands-on service, in 2014 these
organizations held major drives that stocked
the POTS Food Pantry and Clothing Closet;
provided back-to-school supplies, holiday
gifts and meals; and created special outings
for the children in the POTS community.

GENEROSITY
You Can Be Part of the Solution
At POTS, we work hard to make the money we receive go as far as possible in service to our
clients. Here are a few examples of what your generous donation can do.
$1,000
Provides 400 people with a warm, nutritious meal in our Community Dining Room.
$5,000
Provides 30 families with emergency Food Pantry services for an entire year. Our Food Pantry,
modeled after a grocery store, offers nutritious staples and fresh produce that clients can
select themselves and take home to prepare in the comfort of their own homes.
$10,000
Provides 50 people with help from our professional social services staff to access benefits,
employment and educational programs, medical care, health insurance and daycare—
fundamental components to a family’s successful journey toward stability and self-sufficiency.
$25,000
Provides 40 people with legal representation from our on-site staff attorneys to help prevent
evictions and access benefits that have been unfairly denied—critical services that reduce
homelessness and generate economic activity for the low-income community that POTS serves.
$50,000
Provides 500 low-income adults, children and elderly people with access to the entire suite of
POTS services designed to move people from crises to stability, and ultimately self-sufficiency:
Community Dining Room, Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, Mail Services, Shower Facilities,
Barbershop, Holiday Gifts, Back-to-School Supplies, Case Management, Legal Representation,
Immigration Assistance, and on-site Medical Clinic.

FINANCIALS
A CONTINUING STORY OF STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Thanks to the loyal support of our donors,
POTS maintained a strong financial position
throughout 2014. Our commitment to using
donated funds efficiently has paid off in low
management and fundraising costs as a
percentage of our budget. Best of all,
the return on investment is high: with an
operating budget of $2.7 million in 2014, POTS
was able to return $6 million to the community
through public benefits access, and millions
more through eviction prevention and meals
in the Community Dining Room and Food
Pantry.
