The late Army PFC Elkoney A. Allison, represented by second cousin Glynn Lafever,
is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week. Allison served in World War II from
1939 until his death in 1943 as a prisoner of war. He served with the 753rd tank

The late U. S. Army Technician 5th Grade Walter Cecil Bandy, represented by nephew Walter W. Bandy, niece Peggy Hunter and greatnephew Thomas D. Bandy, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week. Bandy served during World War II as a battery “C”in the 181 st

ARMY SGT. LYNN COYD QUALLS
The late Army Sgt. Lynn Coyd Qualls, represented by, seated, daughter Debbie Pierce, widow Marie Qualls, and son Mike Qualls,
and standing, from left, daughters Cathy Reel, Cindy Polk, Vicky Walraven and Judy Bates, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the
Week. Qualls served his country in Korea as a member of the 185th signal battalion from May of 1948 to May of 1952. He was

ARMY REED WELCH
Reed Welch, born Oct 9, 1924 in Monterey, is the Herald-Citizen
Veteran of the Week. Reed served in WWII in the Army from March
1943 to December 1945. He served in the Pacific theater in New Guinea
and the Phillipines. He received a Sharpshooter Rifle qualification and
was awarded WWII Victory Ribbon, AP Theater Ribbon, 2 Bronze
Service Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and One Bronze Star CO
23. After the war, Reed went to Los Angeles on a GI Bill and studied
Aeronautical Engineering and worked in the machining industry with a
company who developed the first Jet Engine. He began his own
company, S & S Screw Machine in California and brought it back home
to Putnam County in 1979. Reed is retired and lives at his home with his
wife, Rusty.

PFC ALVIN MILLIKEN, CORPORALS CHARLES EDWARD & BILLY CORROLL MILLIKEN
The Milliken brothers, PFC Alvin Milliken, left, pictured with his wife, Ruth, and Alvin’s late brothers, Corporals Charles Edward and
Billy Borroll Milliken, are the Herald-Citizen Veterans of the Week. Alvin served in the Marine Corps in 1946 after tying to join the
Army in 1944, only to be too young, and was in the Cold War in the Occupational Forces in Guam, China and Japan. He was discharged
shortly after, as it was the last month of World War II when he was inducted. Charles served in the Army as a corporal and died in 2002.

The late T/5 Horace B. Roberson, represented by his widow,
Gertha Medley, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week.
Roberson served during World War II was a gun crewman in the
Pacific Arena. He died in 1985 and is buried in Algood. For

Conflict from 1951 to 1953 in the Eighth Army 36th English Combat Group, 194th Bat. Korea, and earned three Battle Stars. He is

Brothers Lt. Col. Glen Lee Nichols, left, and First Lt. Earl Nichols are the Herald-Citizen Veterans of the Week. Glen served in
the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He began with the Tennessee National Guard Troop I 109th
Cavalry in 1939. The unit was mobilized into federal service in February of 1941. He served in World War II for three and a
half years and in Korean Conflict for one year. Earl served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1954 to 1956. He

CORPORAL GENE RUCKETT
Corporal Gene Puckett, left, is pictured with his son, Jeffery Puckett and a photo of himself when he was still serving
his country as a part of the Marine Corps. Gene was inducted into the Corps in 1951 during the Korean War and served
as a machine gunner and heavy artillery specialist. He spent 13 months and 8 days on the font line and was discharged
in 1953. His photo will be added to the numerous others that hang in the Putnam County Archives/Veterans Hall.

Herald-Citizen Veterans of the Week. Sgt. Huddleston served in Patton’s Army during World War II, serving in Normandy,
Northern France, the Rhineland, and earned an European Middle Eastern Ribbon with stars. He died March 7, 1979 and is
buried in Putnam County. Marine William M. Huddleston Sr. served 16 months in the South Pacific during World War II and
was glad to be serving his country with the nickname of “Outlaw.”The late Army Technician Fifth Grade Huddleston served
during World War II and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with three Bronze stars and served with
Patton’s Army in the Battle of the Bulge. He died in 2002. Army Technician Third Grade Kenneth Keith Huddleston Sr.
served during World War II in New Guinea and was a part of the invasion of Leyte and others in the Philippine Islands.

of the Week. John served during World War II and Korea as det. commander, adjunct, registrar, 45th general hosp. in North
Africa and Italy. He earned EAME, America Defense, World War II Victory, and American Theater medals. He died Sept.
30, 1977, and is buried in Joplin, Mo. Bernard served during World War II and Korea as a medical administrator in Persia,
China, Burma and Caribbean commands. He earned EAME, Asiatric-Pacific Campaign medals and the Japan Occupation
Medal. He died June 18, 1978, and is buried in Missouri. Gerald served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, in
communications in France, Belgium, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He earned campaign service stars, Germany 2, Korea
2, and Vietnam 3. Jesse served during World War II as a radio operator in the Aleutian Islands, and 42nd Troop Carrier
Squadron. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with bronze star and the World War II victory medal. He died April 14,
1995, and is buried in Florida. Walter served during World War II. He attended Teletype Operators Course in Camp
Crowder, Md. He was medically discharged after six months of service. He died Jan. 27, 2005, and is buried in Franklin.

BENJAMIN LAKIN C. LEDBETTER CIVIL WAR VETERAN
The late Co. H, 25th Confederate Tennessee Infantryman Benjamin Lakin C. Ledbetter is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week.
Representing the Civil War veteran, seated, from left, are Mable Littrell, Ruth Milliken and Ruby Rundell, great granddaughters; Paul
Gilpatrick, great grandson; and Sharon Mata, great-great granddaughter; and standing, from left, Bruce Ledbetter and Robert
Shoemake, great-great-great-grandsons; Linda Cox, great-great-great- granddaughter; Mike Gilpatrick, great-great grandson; and greatgreat-great-grandsons Matt Littrell and Adam Littrell. Ledbetter served as 2 nd Corporal in Co. H, 25th Confederacy Tennessee Infantry
and was severely wounded in the arm during the Battle of Murfreesboro and was captured and died from the wound the following
month. His wife, Marinda (Rindy) took a wagon to Nashville to pick up his body and returned it to Overton County, where he was

The late TEC-5 Burl Herman Bennett and Army PFC Walter Luther Bennett, represented by various family members, are the

War II with the 148th Engineer Battalion ETO. He was in Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. He died Feb. 1,
1977, and is buried in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Walter served during World War II as a field lineman with the 211th Artillery
Battalion, 1st Army ETO. He served in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He died Feb. 25, 2010, and is also buried

The late U. S. Army SP4 Phillip Aaron Presley, represented by his brother, Maurice, holding the flag that was on
his late brother’s casket; Marlene Spivey, sister, holding the box of medals her late brother was presented with;
and his wife Tootsie, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week. Presley completed training at Fort Knox, KY,
in 1960 and then went to Germany where he was a motor officer. He was also a bridge specialist with the 814

U. S. Army Tech Sgt. Woodrow Jackson and his son, U. S. Army Chief Warrant Officer
W-4 Harold Everett Jackson, are the Herald-Citizen Veterans of the Week. Woodrow
served during WWII from Dec. 14, 1944, to April 30, 1946, in the Philippine Islands,
129th Infantry, earning two Bronze Service Stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Battle of Luzon.
He will turn 94 Oct. 20. Harold served in the National Guard at age 16 and enrolled in
active duty in the Army for six years, serving as a Medevac pilot from 1988 to 1990. For

The late U. S. Air Force S/Sgt. William Harold Cumby, represented by brother Robert, left, and sister-in-law Marge,
is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week. William served in World War II and Korea from 1945-1958. He joined
the Marines in 1941, serving through 1945. He was called into the Air National Guard in 1951, re-enlisted in the Air
Force through 1958. He died in 1984 and is buried in Crest Lawn Cemetery.

Retired U. S. Air Force MSgt. Robert Franklin Cumby, left, with his wife, Marge, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran
of the Week. Robert served in Korea and Vietnam after being called to active duty in Michigan in 1951. He was
assigned to radar sites and re-enlisted in AF before retiring in October 1971. His duty was with ADC, TAC,
SAC, Pacific, Asia, Spain, Taiwan and Hawaii.

1971 and is buried in Sand Springs Cemetery. William served in the 82nd Airborne, earning the Purple Heart, serving in the
Ardennes, Rhineland, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, North Africa and Normandy. He died in 1985 and is buried in Welch Cemetery.
Shirley served aboard the USS Kenneth M. Willett DE354 as a radio operator during World War II in the South Pacific, New

U. S. ARMY PRIVATE ARTHUR D. CUMBY
The late U. S. Army Private Arthur D. Cumby, represented by Daughter-in-law Marge Cumby, left, and son Robert
Cumby, is the Herald-Citizen Veteran of the Week. Arthur served during World War I after enlisting in 1917 for basic
training at Camp Jackson, SC, and went to France in 1918. He was wounded on the battlefield. He died in 1956 and is
buried in Paran, Overton County, TN.

CAVALRY PRIVATE WYATT CLEGHORN
The late Cavalry Private Wyatt Cleghorn, represented by his
great-great-grandson Anthony Wyatt Hodge, is the HeraldCitizen Veteran of the Week. Cleghorn served during the Civil
War from 1861-1864, enlisted in the 16th Tennessee Infantry
and transferred to Forrest 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. He died
February 12, 1911, and is buried in Rocky Point Missionary
Baptist Cemetery, Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN.
