WRAPPING OUR FAMILIES IN SUPPORT
Dear Friends,
When we named our capital campaign “Seeds of
Change,” we had no idea how prophetic those words
would become as 2013 brought about not only a
continual state of program enhancement, but major
changes as well. Rising to the top of those changes
was our licensure to provide substance abuse and
mental health treatment.
Over the years, it has become more and more apparent
that an untreated and undiagnosed mental health
disorder is so often at the core of an individual’s barrier
to success. Specifically, this is true of the mothers
who live at our housing campus. It has also become
more evident that their children are suffering from the
traumas associated with addiction and homelessness.
Consequently, expanding our mental health services to
children became a major focus in 2013.
The 100-plus children who lived at Perspectives’
Supportive Housing Program last year, plus the
additional 80 who were active in our Kids Connection
Program now have access to our children’s mental
health counselor. And, this change is only the
beginning, as our strategic planning provides the
methods to continue this expansion.
Though Perspectives has always provided extensive
services to children, 2013 was a year that specifically
laid out a long-range plan that will include early
childhood development, a youth earth science
program, and a major expansion into children’s mental
health. These are exciting developments for our future
generation. Unlocking a child’s potential, removing
barriers to services, and providing exciting and
comprehensive programming is a theme you will see
throughout our 2013 annual report. And it is a theme
which, over the next few years, will continue to drive
our strategies. We hope you enjoy seeing the success
you helped to create in the faces of the children that
grace so many of the following pages.
In closing, we deeply thank all of you who have been
so generous with either your time or your finances –
and many of you have given both! We are well aware
that we could not have accomplished this work without
you. On behalf of all the families and children we serve
– THANK YOU!

WHO WE ARE
WHAT WE DO
Perspectives’ mission is breaking the cycle for at-risk families
and children for total family recovery. Founded in 1976, we are an
award-winning, nonprofit, multi-program human service agency.
The lives of the families we serve have been ravaged by the effects
of addiction and homelessness.
We work to assist our families in rebuilding healthy and sustainable
lives through comprehensive, wraparound services, which include
supportive housing, case management, mental health and
chemical dependency services, employment counseling, parent
education, and children’s academic and nutritional enrichment
programming.
As we deliver services, we believe in:
•The inherent worth of every person and in our obligation to
honor that belief by providing an opportunity for people to
succeed
•Walking with and joining each person wherever they are in their
journey
It is our belief that total family recovery happens by:
•Achieving a healthy mind, body, and soul for every
family member
•Giving all family members a voice
•Strengthening families who, in turn, will contribute to
their communities
•Each person’s freedom to make choices and in assisting
healthy choices within a community of support
•Using a systematic approach to breaking cycles for at-risk
families, starting with addressing fundamental needs and
providing children with comprehensive support services
•Every individual’s ability to change when treated with respect
•Finding hope in every situation
•Everyone’s ability to learn

“Thank you so much for everything you taught me. I will always come back here. Kids
Connection was the beginning for me. It was the one place I always felt safe.”
– Former child living in our Supportive Housing Program
KIDS CONNECTION
Unlocking potential in the
lives of our students
Kids Connection is a comprehensive extended-day
academic environment that seeks to unlock the potential
of homeless and at-risk children, kindergarten through
eighth grade, by providing academic, nutritional, social
skills, and mental health services. Taught by five licensed
teachers and over 50 trained volunteers, the program is
operational five days per week, twelve months per year.

PARENTING TIME
A safe and nurturing environment for all
Perspectives’ Parenting Time Program provides
supervised visitation, monitored visitation, and exchange
services. Parenting Time services take place in a safe,
nurturing environment for the children to create a
positive interaction with parent(s) and siblings and for
non-custodial parents to interact with their children.

positioning one’s self for
advancement is critical to
long-term change.
8
EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
Empowerment through employment
The purpose of our in-house employment office is to get residents
back to work. We provide assessments, training, a Job Club,
resources for obtaining a GED, child care, transportation, assistance
for secondary education, and advocacy with employers. We have
found that it is not a client’s lack of desire that stands in the way of
employment, but rather numerous barriers, including: lack of high
school diploma or GED, transportation, child care, combined with
criminal background, mental instability, and lack of sobriety.

Still, getting a job is only one goal listed in our residents’ individual
Program Plan. Retaining employment and positioning one’s self
for advancement is critical to long-term change. Achieving selfsufficiency hinges on our program’s ability to provide long-term
(minimum 18 months) services. We need this time to rebuild selfesteem (foundation to success), inspire self-sufficiency (motivation),
and develop realistic aspirations (contentment); all attributes that
are essential to restoring the client’s dignity.
9
“You saved my life and that is not an exaggeration. I was out of control and had lost
everything. This program gave me my kids, my self esteem, and my future back. I
live each day committed to my sobriety and for the first time in a long time I can
see a brighter future for me and my family.”
– Lisa, former Supportive Housing client
