Honoring a Legacy of Learning
Mary Nemeth established the William Sims Memorial Library at Sojourner Truth House.
Mary’s a founding member of Catherine Kasper Society, the planned giving society for the
benefit of Poor Handmaid ministries.
Mary Nemeth grew up in a home committed to service. Her
father served our country as a U.S. Marine, and her mother taught
her family the importance of helping others, leading by example.
Mary learned about Sojourner Truth House through a Womenade
gathering at a friend’s home, and began volunteering her skills
to provide hope and help for homeless and at-risk women and
their children.
Two years ago, Mary’s brother, William, passed away. He was an
avid reader. As a way to honor his memory and legacy, Mary made
a donation to establish the Sojourner Truth House library and
support literacy activities with clients. “After I began my work
there, I was impressed with all the work being done by the staff
and volunteers. I realized how fortunate I was to have been
given so many educational opportunities, including easy access to a
variety of books. Because of this and my elementary teaching
experience, I felt it was important to have easy access to books.
Friends, family, and neighbors have all helped the idea of a library
become a reality.”
Her dedication to Sojourner Truth House is unending. She has
expressed an intention to contribute to this ministry in perpetuity
through outright gifts as well as a designated gift from her
estate. In this way, she can honor the legacy of learning and service
rooted in her parents’ example by inspiring a love of reading and
self-improvement for clients.

You inspire me! Every time you support the ministry of
Sojourner Truth House, you create life-changing opportunities
for discouraged mothers, their children, and depressed
women. You give them hope. You make it possible for them
to inch closer to knowing how beautiful they really are. Time
and time again, these women share how they are strengthened
through education and how they’ve begun to believe in
themselves again.
Each day at Sojourner Truth House a light bulb goes on for a
client-- a young mother sees how changing her behavior
improves the relationship with her children, and another
woman who has been abused experiences what love and
respect feel like when she walks through our doors. We are
blessed by these many women who choose to engage in the
positive opportunities that your gifts make possible.
Sojourner Truth House has offered me many opportunities
to grow and change as well. The commitment of our staff,
volunteers and Board members inspires me to keep going, to
keep serving. The resilience of the women and children who
begin to blossom here challenges me to be a better person.
The generosity of folks like you, our donors, has me catching
my breath when I open your contribution envelopes.

And you have opportunities too. Every time you write a check
to our ministry, put some cash into an envelope, form a team
of family and friends for the Walk, or donate food and personal
hygiene items, you create real opportunities for change.
Whether you realize it or not, your financial and in-kind gifts
ripple out beyond these walls into a community made a little
better for each family re-housed, each family re-united, each
woman employed or educated a little more.
I am amazed and grateful for the growing network of good
people who believe in the mission of this place. There are
more of you every year, and more of you are upping your
game. Together we’re turning the tide of homelessness and
poverty through one family or one woman at a time. Each
year, each day is another opportunity to do what Jesus did. I
know we are inspired when you show up to help. We hope
you are inspired, too.

Making Me
Whole Again
Miss Dee,
Sojourner Truth House Client
“I was just broken and Sojourner is one of
the pieces that He put back in my life to
make me whole again.”
Three years ago, Miss Dee was homeless
and suffering from a 20 year drugaddiction. Today, through God’s work
and her learning and growth at Sojourner
Truth House, she transformed her low
self-esteem into a profound love for
herself and other women in need.
“I had to get to the root of what was
hurting me and one of those things was
abandonment. What I did was... I was
using drugs for over 20-some years, and
what I couldn’t do in the last 20 years
God has done in the last 2 ½ years.”
Miss Dee participated in recovery groups,
parenting groups, yoga classes, and she
received regular treatment for severe
depression through Edgewater Systems.
“I went to whatever group I could get in
because they showed so much love and
that’s what I was really missing – love –
and I found it here. It was just awesome.”
Now Miss Dee helps other at-risk
women find housing, and she speaks
publicly about her growth through the
Phenomenal Woman program. Her
goal is to embrace and empower other
women. “It’s a domino effect, and I really,
really love that.”
Partners in Creating Health
and Caring for the Community
Highlighting a Partnership between Northwest Indiana Area Health
Education Center (AHEC) at Purdue University Calumet (PUC), Purdue
University Calumet College of Nursing, and Sojourner Truth House
Seven years ago, Lynn Olszewski, RN, MSA, Director of AHEC and a former Ancilla Systems
employee; Lynn Miskovich, NNP, ANP-BC, APRN, Associate Professor of Nursing at PUC;
and Sister Kathleen Quinn, a Poor Handmaid and volunteer at Sojourner Truth House,
initiated a caring partnership between students in the nursing program and the clients of
Sojourner Truth House.
Each week, nursing students provide basic healthcare screenings and prevention checks
for women and children receiving services at Sojourner Truth House. This collaboration
draws on expertise and support of the Northwest Indiana Area Health Education Center
and Purdue University Calumet College of Nursing. “Those with acute and/or chronic
illness are often not in a position to search for work, attend school, or become engaged in
productive activities that facilitate movement out of homelessness,” says Miskovich. “We
must first address the client’s mental and physical health care needs, thus allowing each to
fully participate in the programs provided at Sojourner Truth House.
Students provide healthcare screenings for blood pressure, height, weight, body mass
index, vision, lung function, glucose, hemoglobin and total cholesterol. They then provide
education tailored to the needs of the individual clients. In a three year period, these
wellness checks have helped to identify more than 2,000 potential health abnormalities.
“My goal is to instill in students an awareness of the unique needs of the vulnerable and
provide tools to identify resources. While I strive to prepare knowledgeable, proficient
healthcare providers, it is my hope that each will exhibit a philosophy of care.... I hope to
inspire a professional commitment to advocacy and service within vulnerable populations,”
comments Miskovich. Through the years, students have become more involved with
Sojourner Truth House by fundraising, participating in the Walk for Sojourner Truth
House, and collecting baby sundries and personal care items. More importantly, though,
many students have examined their career options choosing to work with underserved,
vulnerable populations.
“One cold morning several students and I arrived at Sojourner Truth House to find a
homeless woman sleeping outdoors,” continues Miskovich. “All she owned was being
worn! The nursing students and I provided a physical examination and required care that
prevented an unnecessary trip to the emergency department. The client was then taken
into the “fold” at STH and provided with necessary resources to begin the journey out of
homelessness.”
Miskovich is inspired by the staff and volunteers who welcome and care for the women and
children of Sojourner Truth House. “Clients are nurtured, yet given the tools and personal
responsibility.”

Personal, Spiritual, and
Community Growth
Cheryl Gojko, Yoga Instructor,
Volunteer, Donor, Fundraiser, Walk Team Captain
“There’s something about teaching yoga at Sojourner Truth House
that truly inspires me to be a better person. It always makes me
think of how I’m living in the world. Reminds me of hope. You’ll get
through anything.”
Cheryl Gojko started her yoga career and volunteer involvement
at Sojourner Truth House ten years ago when she began offering
yoga classes to clients and staff members. She’s inspired by the
steady encouragement that clients receive when they walk through
the doors. Through their participation in the programs, the women
of Sojourner Truth House learn to “lean into” helping other
people and rejoicing in others’ success as well as their own.
“In 10 years of teaching these women, I’ve noticed that some come in
very hardened, but by the time they are in the Transitional Outreach
Program Participants (TOPPS), I see softening. There is camaraderie
here. They laugh more, smile more, they are more extroverted.”
A Good
Community
Feeling
Lillie Calhoun (“Miss Lillie”)
and Cheryl Keller,
Mother/Daughter Volunteers
Even through her own personal loss and the pain of losing her
father, Cheryl found encouragement from the women of Sojourner
Truth House as well. “When I walked through something in my
own life that was challenging, I was reminded of the courage and
endurance of these women. I felt like ‘they grew me.’”
Cheryl translates this personal growth into building more financial
support for the organization. She raised more than $1,600 at her
church for Sojourner Truth House, and she leads the “Holy Spirit
Hopefuls” team in the Walk for Sojourner Truth House. She has
been amazed by the unbelievable support and generosity.
“Look into your heart; decide what works
for you. Observe it, watch it, and stay
connected to what you give to.”
Miss Lillie and her daughter Cheryl both
reached out to Sojourner Truth House as a
result of loss in their lives. Miss Lillie lost her
husband in 2006, and at the encouragement
of a friend, she began volunteering, giving
herself to help someone else. Cheryl first
contributed to STH as a way to honor the
death of her friend’s son. Soon, she too, was
drawn quickly into the community.
“I’ve taken ownership of keeping the files in
order,” says Cheryl. “I get a good community
feeling when I’m here. And I get some hugs
sometime.” Miss Lillie comments, “When I
walk in, people start saying, ‘hi Mom’ and
‘hi Grandma.’ I start my shift by visiting
people.”
Miss Lillie and Cheryl know firsthand how
appreciative and transformed the clients are.
“The classes they offer the women are
wonderful,” says Cheryl. “They are given
tools to change all kinds of things in their
lives.”
From yoga to parenting, nutrition, health
assessments, childcare, furniture, and so
much more, STH provides women with the
resources and encouragement to change
their lives and their families. “One thing I
can say as a volunteer is that I can see how
the money is spent,” says Cheryl. “The
money goes to helping clients. These are
needs. Not a luxury. Needs.”

at risk women in need, the Poor Handmaids will continue to aid Sojourner Truth House, but at a lesser amount each year. It is our hope
that you, as donors and friends, will work with us to compensate for the difference as well as provide for future growth.

Womenade Turns 10!
Susan Cohen, founder of Womenade Fund benefitting Sojourner Truth House
In 2003, Susan Cohen held an event to support Sojourner
Truth House with the goal of bringing together local women in
an atmosphere of generosity and hospitality. She learned of this
initiative while researching a national “women helping women”
group called Womenade and learned that its fundraising model
could be applied to the emergency needs for the women of
Sojourner Truth House.
From the first Womenade gathering, when a core group of women
hosted a dinner in someone’s home, to the growth of additional
at-home or public-venue Womenade events, more than $50,000
has been raised from this simple plan. Cultivating hundreds of new
friendships and building awareness of the impact STH has in the
community have also been byproducts.
These get-togethers can be hosted by either an individual or group;
events can be scheduled during the day or in the evening. Typically,
invitees are asked to bring hors d’oeuvres to share as well as a
financial contribution.
Womenade celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 7, 2013 at
the Marshall Gardner Center for the Arts in Gary. More than 70
women (and a few men) joined in for this special celebration of ten
years of women supporting women.
Also in 2013, Susan was recognized as Outstanding Individual
Philanthropist by the Northwest Indiana Association of Fundraising
Professionals for her initiative in starting Womenade in northwest
Indiana.
“Susan’s huge and ongoing commitment is something I have
relied on for years without disappointment,” Sr. Peg said, noting
that Susan is seldom far away from the next philanthropic idea,
fundraising event or volunteer effort. Susan originally volunteered
in Sojourner Truth House’s kitchen and later in the household
department. Susan’s attention to detail “got that place organized
in no time,” Sr. Peg said.
“Give the world lemons to make lemonade. Give the world a woman like Susan Cohen
to make Womenade… and a whole lot more.” — Sister Peg Spindler, CSA
For the last five years, Pat Pullara and the
Greater Northwest Indiana Association of
REALTORS® (GNIAR) have raised money and
participated as a team in the Walk for
Sojourner Truth House. GNIAR members are
committed to addressing the problem of
homelessness in Northwest Indiana.

“A safe and clean apartment for each client is
the opportunity to change her life for the
better. I can see the success rate of clients
going through the programs at Sojourner
Truth House. They rebuild their selfconfidence, gain practical knowledge of the
business world, address health needs, and are
accountable for their steps to independence
by a caring, loving group of staff members…
Sojourner Truth House provides the safety
net when they falter…”
Pat learned about the tremendous needs of
homeless women and their children by
attending a Coffee & Conversation program
at Sojourner Truth House.
Since then, she has invited friends, colleagues,
and GNIAR members to visit with Board
members, clients, and Sister Peg Spindler
during these regularly scheduled conversations.
“Any pre-conceived notions I had about how
one could end up needing services from
Sojourner Truth House vanished. I was taken
on a tour of the facility and marveled at how
much was accomplished with so limited space
and staff.”
Although Pat recently retired from GNIAR,
“Sojourner Truth House has become my
primary personal mission… and I plan on
increasing my fundraising activity for the
future.”
If you would like to experience Coffee &
Conversation for yourself or for a group of
family, friends, or coworkers, please call (219)

participate in the Walk for Sojourner Truth
House scheduled for June 14 by registering at

Blessings Every Day
Bertha Harlan, Monthly Donor and Volunteer
Bertha Harlan began sharing her blessings with the women of Sojourner Truth
House almost 15 years ago. In her late sixties, recovering from breast cancer and
the loss of her husband, Bertha felt it was important to focus on helping other
people, so she volunteered in the kitchen, cooking and serving clients. “I saw the
work that the Sisters did and the people that they helped. It’s just such a beautiful
thing. I pray every day for them, that they stay strong and keep helping people.”
Bertha is inspired by the success of Sojourner Truth House clients. “When one
accomplishes their goals or gets a job... One was a beautician, one was a registered
nurse, I think. There are so many I can’t even name all of them. One time we
were in the yard and this woman ran through waving a paper and it was her CNA
certificate. She was so happy.”
Now in her eighties, Bertha no longer works in the kitchen. Instead she makes a
monthly financial contribution and encourages family and friends to give money
and personal hygiene supplies. In lieu of gifts for her eightieth birthday, her friends
contributed 1,275 pounds of travel-sized soaps, shampoos, and other personal
items for the women at Sojourner Truth House. “We experience so many
blessings every day. It’s amazing to me how blessed my family has been. I believe
that you never do for people that you don’t get back. Everything we put out – my
husband and I – God has more than given us back.”
When asked about Bertha, Sister Joan Fisher, PHJC, one of the founders of
Sojourner Truth House, had this to say: “I have a picture of Bertha in my mind. I
can see her so clearly, working and bustling around in the kitchen. She was one of
our first volunteers. She was so faithful. Her specialty was red velvet cake. Bless
her for all she did!”
Heart of a Donor
Pam Yttri, Board Member,
Major Donor
Pam was introduced to Sojourner Truth House (STH) by her dear friend Claudia
Govert, who has volunteered at STH for years. Claudia invited Pam to Coffee &
Conversation to learn more about STH. There she recalls hearing a client who
had a master’s degree from a prestigious university speak candidly about her
struggles. It became apparent to Pam how vulnerable we all are. She shared, “We
need to take care of each other. That’s why we’re here.”
Pam joined the STH Board of Directors in 2009. She loves that the board is
actively involved in helping clients transition from one lifestyle to another. “We
are becoming the best board that we can be. We don’t just show up for meetings.
We invest our time, treasure and talent.” Pam thinks it’s important for people to
understand that although STH is a ministry sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of
Jesus Christ, “They serve everyone. They are not specific to a religion or walk of
life. They offer the clients opportunities they may otherwise not have: education,
help for addictions, counseling, and a chance to complete a GED. I like that it is a
hand up, not a handout.”
Pam comes from a charitably inclined family. Her parents, Francis and Elsie Meyer,
set that model for her; that’s why she has a propensity to give from the heart.
Through the Francis and Elsie Meyer Charitable Trust, she and her sisters are able
to honor their parents’ legacy to make a difference from the heart. “Sojourner
Truth House is where MY heart is.”
HOW
WE SERVE
We serve three groups
Community: Community clients are women,
children and men who are housed but in need
of basic assistance. Some have recently lost their
jobs or have been evicted. We are their advocates
and their listening ears, providing:
• Interviewers to identify their needs
• Referrals to other agencies
• Access to our food pantry and clothes closet
for women
• Health screenings and referrals to local clinics
Sometimes these basic services are all clients need
to get back on their feet.
Homeless:
These women have real barriers
that must be faced. Our services help clients
overcome homelessness:
• Case management and individualized goal
setting
• 19 psycho-therapeutic groups to identify and
overcome the root causes of instability
• Referrals for mental health/addiction services
if needed
• Child supervision as clients work through
the program
...as well as basics like food pantry and clothes
closet, telephones, laundry facilities, daily breakfast
and lunch.
Outreach:
We address the spiritual, mental,
social, financial and personal concerns of women
who have transitioned into their own homes.
Many of these women have endured generational
poverty, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic
violence and/or personal tragedies. The Outreach
Program equips them with the skills and resources
needed to become self-sufficient and to become
positive contributing members of the community.
STH participants attend daily therapeutic and life
skills groups to obtain the tools they need to move
towards a life of stability.

In Memory of Sister Judian
Sister Judian Breitenbach, PHJC | October 22, 1930 – March 7, 2013
Sister Judian Breitenbach, PHJC, died March 7, 2013 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson,
Indiana. Sister Judian was originally from LaPorte, Indiana and entered the Poor Handmaids of
Jesus Christ congregation in 1950. She was involved in the nursing profession for many years, and
served on the boards of several PHJC ministries. In 2002 Sister Judian opened the Namaste
Center where she was committed to the wellness and healing of individuals and an advocate
for holistic healing. In addition to her ministry at Namaste Center, she was the chairperson of
Sojourner Truth House Board at the time of her death. Sojourner Truth House is fortunate
to have had the leadership of Sister Judian. We are deeply grateful for her many years of
service. She will live in our memories forever.
“I met Sister Judian, during the years she was Chairwoman of
Ancilla Systems. She was a dedicated and visionary leader during
an earlier period of change and turmoil in the health care mission.
She maintained the values of traditional medicine, but was open to
exploring the contributions that alternative approaches to healing
could provide. Her most remarkable qualities were her faith,
her of ability to connect with people on multiple levels and her
unrelenting optimism regarding human nature and the future of
mankind.” –Rich Sanders, Esq., Vedder Price
“I came to know Sister Judian as decisive but always open to
different ways of thinking about things. She saw that everything
was coming to wholeness and that we were supposed to help that
along in our various ministries and roles. She saw that happening
in individual lives and in the human community. Sister Judian’s
personal radiance came from her own growth toward wholeness,
I think. Wholeness could be contained in the moments you were
in one-on-one conversation with her or in a Board meeting or in
the experience of the Universe as abundance as she was fond of
pointing out. Sister Judian will always remind me of St. Irenaeus’
words: “The Glory of God is man or woman fully alive.”” –Sister
Peg Spindler, CSA, Executive Director, Sojourner Truth House
“Sister Judian devoted her life to the physical and spiritual health
and well-being of all with whom she dealt….and especially those
who were also “financially impaired”. Sojourner Truth House was
a perfect fit. With a smile in her eyes that matched the smile in
her heart Judian was tireless in service to our Board as well as to
our clients until almost the very last of her days on earth. We are
blessed to have known her… and we miss her!” –On behalf of the
board by Judy Stanton, Esq., Chair, STH Board of Directors
“Sister Judian’s wisdom, kindness and love were expressed
through the art of healing which she continued to expand and
deepen throughout her entire life. Her abiding hope and deep
trust that the energy gathering in the universe to bring about a
new consciousness was a divine energy, was indeed the Christ
gathering all things to himself.” –Sister Linda Volk, PHJC
“The first things you noticed about Sister Judian were her striking
blue eyes. She would look at you with her deep penetrating
presence and become totally absorbed in you and what you were
saying. Her comments were always bold, loving and holistic. I met
Sister Judian 20 years ago. Over the years I saw her spiritual joy and
childlike enthusiasm become a part of everything she did. There
was no distinction or separation. My last conversation with her a
few weeks before she departed was about making the transition
from this life to the afterlife. In her sparkling radiant blue eyes I am
sure she saw no difference.” –Laura Evans, Valparaiso IN
“Sister Judian’s favorite dress was a bright yellow, cotton, flowing
gown she purchased in Mexico when providing a workshop for
our younger Sisters there. She loved to wear the dress when she
danced at prayer celebrations and just whenever she danced. With
that dress and with her whole life she taught all of us so much
regarding exuberance and passion for life, a healthy life. She sought
wholeness in body/mind/spirit, creatively and enthusiastically
addressing the challenges of each day. All that she held dear – the
Namaste Center, Sojourner Truth House, Poor Handmaid life –
was buoyed by her energy and convictions and drive for healing
and wholeness. We miss Judian yet – but her passion still dances in
our memories along with all the good works she left as her legacy.
In my mind’s eye I see her in eternity, dancing like sunshine before
God right now.” –Sister Judith Diltz, PHJC, Provincial
“As one of her last official acts as Board Chair, Sister Judian
approved my hire as Development Manager/Executive Support for
STH. I immediately felt a warm, embracing bond with her and still
think of her often. My most profound sadness is that I was not able
to spend more time with and get to know better one of the most
unique, inspiring and special women I have ever met. I wish I could
have known her longer and better but feel blessed to have met
her.” –Sherita Brewer, Development Manager, Sojourner Truth House
