Mission Statement
With the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we
the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe,
seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community
within and without our parish.
From the Desk of Fr. Connolly
September: The Seven Sorrows of Mary
August 28, 2016
It is a cherished custom of our Catholic Tradition to dedicate each month of the year to a particular devotion. The dedication
of each month is based either on a certain event in Salvation History, the liturgical calendar, or a combination of the two.
Our Mother the Church provides us, her children, with beautiful customs such as this to help us grow in holiness by fostering our devotion to these different components of our religion. The month of September begins this week and is dedicated
to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, the feast of which is on the 15th of September. But what is this devotion?
Devotion to the sorrows of Mary was already the topic of meditations composed by some Fathers of the Church, such as
Sts. Ephrem the Syrian, Ambrose, Augustine and Bernard. Strictly speaking, devotion to the Seven Sorrows was begun by
the Servite Fathers. Eventually, a feast honoring this devotion was placed on the universal calendar of the Church by Pope
Saint Pius X. The Feast was assigned to 15 September, the day after the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross. The key
image here being Our Lady standing faithfully in sorrow at the foot of the Cross of Her dying Son.
The Seven Sorrows of Mary:
I. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34-35)
II. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)
III. The Loss of the Christ Child in the Temple (Luke 2:43-45)
IV. The Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross (also the 4th Station of the Cross)
V. The Crucifixion (John 19:18, 25-27)
VI. The Taking Down of the Body of the Jesus from the Cross (Mark 15:43-46)
VII. The Burial of Jesus (John 19: 41-42)
The custom of the devotion is to pray seven Hail Mary’s while meditating upon each of these seven sorrows. As we prayerfully mediate upon the Seven Sorrows of Mary during the month of September, we are afforded the chance to reconsider
the meaning and importance of suffering in union with Christ. It is a first principle in Christian ascetics that the closer a
Christian stands to His Lord, the nearer must he be to the Cross. Mary, therefore, was made to taste most deeply of Christ’s
sufferings. This is just one of many reasons she is the best example for us to follow, who seek to grow closer to Her Son.
Be conscious then, that your spirituality must include not only prayer, not only charity, not only the ordinary acts of Christian virtue, but suffering bound up with the Cross of Christ. For faithful Catholics today, there is much to suffer! We are
living in a totally secularized society. There is so much pressure placed upon us to dilute the teachings of the Church or to
follow them less and less. We can even be ridiculed for practicing our faith, loving the Church, and making the Lord Jesus
the very center of our lives. Sometimes, such pressure and ridicule can even come from within our own families. Yes, there
can be much to suffer for faithful Catholics today. But, in the midst of it all, we have the example and prayers of Our Lady
of Sorrows to spur us on. If we remain faithful in the midst of suffering and sorrow like she did, we will have a share in Her
heavenly glory.
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-30
In this reading from Sirach, there is sage advice on how to live
your life: humbly and with the desire to gain knowledge and
wisdom. It ends with the familiar admonishment: almsgiving
atones for sins.
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a
The Ten Commandments represent God’s covenant with
the Jews of the Old Testament through Moses. The covenant of the New Testament comes through Christ. This
portion of the Epistle to the Hebrews contrasts the two
covenants.
Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14
Jesus expounded on the behavior of guests and hosts. The
reminder to be humble echoes the advice in the reading from
Sirach. This reading underscores the importance of treating the poor well, with no thought of recompense from
them: you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

Next Week: 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17

On the Patronal Feast of the Assumption, we had
4 Masses and each of them was very well attended.
Our Blessed Mother must have been very proud of
her children to give such wonderful worship to the
Heavenly Father on the Assumption of Jesus’ mother.

A special word of thanks for all the help with the
Solemn Mass in the evening at the Church of the Assumption. Thanks to all of our concelebrants who
joined our pastor, the parochial vicars, the deacons
and the many altar servers who attended. Our Lector, Ushers, Adult Choir and organ made a beautiful
and joyful Holy Sacrifice unto the Lord.

The outdoor celebration in our Piazza at Assumption was a wonderful sight. When more than 360
parishioners began to exit the church at the end of
Mass, they met up with over 100 people already out
there. They listened to the DJ, waited for a scoop of
gelato, took a pastry or some delight baked by our
parishioners. Despite a sparking electric line and no
AC in Fr. Fata Hall, our crew went into immediate action with the help of the fire fighters, police and of
course Con Ed. I could never thank by name all those
who helped; you know who you are. Grazie!

Scabies
Scabies is an infestation of the skin by
the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Scabies is found world wide and
spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin to skin
contact between people. Hospitals, institutions, child
care facilities, and nursing homes need to be especially
vigilant.
Signs and symptoms include pimple like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin, especially the webbing between
the fingers, skin folds of the wrist, elbow or knee or other
areas where skin folds are present, intense itching (especially at night) over most of the body, and sores on the
body caused by scratching.
Unlike the bed bug, once mites are away from their food
source (the body) they die within 48-72 hours.
Treatment includes a topical prescription lotion to treat
the infection. Always follow the instructions exactly.
Apply it from the neck down to the toes and leave it on
overnight (8 hours). After 8 hours, take a shower, put
on clean clothes, wash all clothes, bedding, towels used
by the infested person for the two days before the treatment, and dry them in a hot dryer. A second treatment
with the body lotion may be necessary 7-10 days later.
Pregnant women and children are often treated with
milder form of scabies medication.
Itching may continue for 2-3 weeks, but that does not
mean you are still infested. Your physician may be able
to provide medication for the itching if it is severe. No
new burrows should appear 24 - 48 hours after effective
treatment.

52. Bowing our heads at the name of Jesus is something that we were taught when I attended Parochial School 30 years or so ago. Is it still encouraged in our school and CCD program?
Information compiled by: Susan Anello MS BSN RN
If you have any questions or suggestions for topics that you
would like to see covered, leave your name and number at the
parish office for Susan to contact you, or you may e-mail her at
[email protected]. Place “Parish Nurse” in subject area.
Yes, all Catholic people, children and adults, are encouraged to bow their heads out of respect when the
Holy Name of JESUS is mentioned or heard. Another
custom was to bow your head whenever a priest gives
you a blessing because he invokes the name of the
FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT.

God Wants You,
Your Family, Friends, and Neighbors!
God is always in relentless pursuit of us, drawing us towards Him. His presence in our lives is the deepest desire of every human heart; we were made for this. He
wants to share His divine life with us, and unite us to
Himself forever. This is what it means to be saved. He
does this through his Church, the Body of Christ on earth
and in heaven. The Church is the way we enter into a
life-giving relationship with God. The Sacraments of the
Church impart to us this Divine life, enabling us to know,
love, and serve God and all He has created. The Church is
the sacrament of salvation for all people. We are not born
with this “saving” grace.
If you are standing on the outside looking in, come in!
The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the
program of instruction and preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. These are the means God has established for us to
enter into lifelong communion with Him, and with each
other. Perhaps you are already baptized, but never completed the other Sacraments of Initiation. The RCIA will
prepare you to receive them fruitfully. To find out more,
call Fr. Sorgie or Sr. Cora 961-3643.
