the Week

his or her own task. We will be
judged good stewards if, at His
coming, He finds us ready and
conscientiously pursuing the tasks to
which we have been called.
Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a
YEAR OF CONSECRATED
LIFE, starting on the First Sunday
of Advent, the weekend of
November 29, 2014, and ending on
February 2, 2016, the World Day of
Consecrated life. The year also
marks the 50th anniversary of
Perfectae Caritatis, a decree on
religious life, and Lumen Gentium,
the Second Vatican Council’s
constitution on the Church. Its
purpose, as stated by the Vatican is
to “make a grateful remembrance of
the recent past” while embracing
“the future with hope.”
“Watch!” This is Jesus' call in today's Gospel. He does not only address it to his
disciples but to everyone: “Watch!” (Mk 13:37). It is a salutary reminder to us
that life does not only have an earthly dimension but reaches towards a
“beyond”, like a plantlet that sprouts from the ground and opens towards the sky.
A thinking plantlet, man, endowed with freedom and responsibility, which is
why each one of us will be called to account for how he/she has lived, how each
one has used the talents with which each is endowed: whether one has kept them
to oneself or has made them productive for the good of one's brethren too.
Today, Isaiah, too, the prophet of Advent, with a heartfelt entreaty addressed to
God on behalf of the people, gives us food for thought. He recognized the
shortcomings of his people and said at a certain point: “There is no one who calls
upon your name, who rouses himself to cling to you; for you have hidden your
face from us and have delivered us up to our iniquities” (cf. Is 64:6).How can we
fail to find this description striking? It seems to reflect certain panoramas of the
post-modern world: cities where life becomes anonymous and horizontal, where
God seems absent and man the only master, as if he were the architect and
director of all things: construction, work, the economy, transport, the branches of
knowledge, technology, everything seems to depend on man alone.
In fact, the true “master” of the world is not the human being but God. The
Gospel says: “Watch therefore — for you do not know when the master of the
house will coming, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the
morning — lest he come suddenly and find you asleep” (Mk 13:35-36). The
Season of Advent returns every year to remind us of this in order that our life
may find its proper orientation, turned to the face of God. The face is not that of
a “master” but of a Father and a Friend.

participated in the ISSF Spelling Bee on November 13th at
the Coral Gables Woman’s Club.

Our Second Grade Students participat

in the Disney Youth Education Series Program at Magic
Kingdom. They learned about the different types of
energy and motion while enjoying all the wonderful
attractions that Disney has to offer.
Our 6th, 7th, 8th Grade Students and our 3rd – 5th Grade
Gifted Students participated in a Science Project along with
Mrs. Angela Ramirez building a Bu
Butterfly and Garden
Vegetable. Together with Baptist Health Hospital and Home
Depot our students were able to learn about the different
types of soil, vegetables, and those plants that will attract
butterflies the most. The goal is to have grown enough
vegetables by the end of the school year in order to make
their own salad.

Primer Domingo de Adviento

“¡Velad!”. Este es el llamamiento de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy. Lo dirige no
sólo a sus discípulos, sino a todos: “¡Velad!” (Mc 13, 37). Es una exhortación
saludable que nos recuerda que la vida no tiene sólo la dimensión terrena, sino
que está proyectada hacia un “más allá”, como una plantita que germina de la
tierra y se abre hacia el cielo. Una plantita pensante, el hombre, dotada de
libertad y responsabilidad, por lo que cada uno de nosotros será llamado a rendir
cuentas de cómo ha vivido, de cómo ha utilizado sus propias capacidades: si las
ha conservado para sí o las ha hecho fructificar también para el bien de los
hermanos.
Del mismo modo, Isaías, el profeta del Adviento, nos hace reflexionar hoy con
una apremiante oración, dirigida a Dios en nombre del pueblo. Reconoce las
faltas de su gente, y en cierto momento dice: “Nadie invocaba tu nombre, nadie
salía del letargo para adherirse a ti; pues nos ocultabas tu rostro y nos entregabas
al poder de nuestra culpa” (Is 64, 6). ¿Cómo no quedar impresionados por esta
descripción? Parece reflejar ciertos panoramas del mundo posmoderno: las
ciudades donde la vida resulta anónima y horizontal, donde Dios parece ausente
y el hombre el único amo, como si fuera él el artífice y el director de todo:
construcciones, trabajo, economía, transportes, ciencias, técnica, todo parece
depender sólo del hombre.
En realidad, el verdadero “señor” del mundo no es el hombre, sino Dios. El
Evangelio dice: “Velad entonces, pues no sabéis cuándo vendrá el señor de la
casa, si al atardecer o a medianoche, o al canto del gallo, o al amanecer: no sea
que venga inesperadamente y os encuentre dormidos” (Mc13, 35-36). El Tiempo
de Adviento viene cada año a recordarnos esto, para que nuestra vida recupere su
orientación correcta, hacia el rostro de Dios. El rostro no de un “señor”, sino de
un Padre y de un Amigo.

Nosotros somos los siervos de Dios,
cada uno con su propia tarea. Seremos
juzgados como buenos administradores
si, a Su venida, Él nos encuentra listos y
conscientemente dedicados a las tareas
que se nos han encomendado.
