Sunday Reflection Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today, we begin the first Sunday of Advent and everywhere we look, we see Christmas. In the stores, Christmas items were being sold before Halloween. On the radio, Christmas songs are being played. Outside, we see Christmas décor light up. And we see green and red sweaters being worn along with Santa’s hat. The joy and celebration of Christmas is around us… but Christmas does not begin with those things that are external, in begins with that which is in internal – it begins with what is within us. As a Church, Christmas does not begin until Christmas day and there is wisdom in why this is. Advent means “coming.” During this season of Advent, we celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ – his birth into this world. This day is truly a glorious one and a day that needs to be celebrated throughout the world. All of the décor, music, parties, and clothes are all worthy of this great day. But, in celebrating the coming of Christ into the world also means that we must prepare ourselves to meet him. We must prepare for the coming of the Lord. And that is what this season of Advent is meant to do. The liturgical color changes to a bluish purple, the color of the sky at dawn just before the sun rises. The lighting of an Advent wreathe and visualizing a new candle being lit each week reminds us that we are getting closer to the birth of Christ. Even the liturgical music changes so that the hymns lead us towards the celebration of Christmas. And with all of these changes, it moves us internally as well to prepare ourselves for Christ – through prayer, through confession, through giving and not receiving. It reminds us to proclaim Christ in a world that tries to remove faith and God. We are invited to enter into this season of Advent ready to meet our Lord. Think of the 3 magi for a moment. They began their journey before Christ was born to see him and to present him with gifts. Advent is our journey towards Christ, what gifts are you preparing to give him? Can your gift be your entire self? I pray that we all experience a blessed season of Advent. God bless. Our Lady of Peace… pray for us. Jubilee Year of Mercy ~ Año Jubilar de la Misericordia November 29, 2015 First Sunday of Advent Besides a new liturgical year, this Advent features an additional “beginning”—next week’s opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a graced opportunity to contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s unconditional love. Pope Francis says that mercy, as the bridge connecting God and the human family, opens our hearts to welcome God’s love for us sinners and our eyes to recognize others, especially society’s least loved and most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to our care. Today’s scriptures provide a perfect Jubilee preparation. Jeremiah comforts us with the promise of God’s justice; Paul challenges us to abound in love for all; Luke bids us anticipate Jesus’ future coming as the joyful advent of our redemption. But in a unique way, this Jubilee Year’s Advent reminds us that Jesus, whose coming we await, is already present among us, in those for whom we need to become instruments of God’s mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
