Epiphany ~ For a moment on this day of Epiphany, we focus on the light: “Rise up in splendor,
Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.” Grace and light abound in the
Scriptures today. How could it not? We celebrate Emmanuel – God with us! We note our blessings and
the gift of God that gives and has been given to us. Even the Magi come from the east following the
light – the star. Light leads them. Light brings them to the Lord. Light shows them the way both within and without.
The gifts they bring to Jesus are themselves gifts of light: gold (for kings), incense (for the gods), myrrh (to preserve
the body in death for the great journey home). Everything about this day reveals the light; except ‘1’ thing. Herod!
Herod the Great! Herod the insecure! Herod lies and manipulates to find out all that he can about this child (Jesus)
with the intention to get rid of the problem (the Holy Innocents). Although there is light in abundance; so also is
there darkness. “Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.” Yes,
Jerusalem is the city of light. Jerusalem, also, will become the city of darkness on that sad and dark, dark, Friday.
Matthew knows this. Matthew cannot allow us to only see light. Matthew knows that where there is light, darkness
will follow. But at the same time, this light springs eternal. Even in darkness, a new light will come. After all, this is
Jesus we are speaking about; Emmanuel – God is with us!

St. Bernard Catholic School is now accepting applications
for the 2013-2014 school year. Our Open House will be
held on Saturday, January 26 from 10 AM-1 PM. Students
who are 4 by September 1 are eligible for our Transitional

Catholic Engaged Encounter is a weekend designed for a
man and woman who are preparing for marriage in the
Catholic Church. This weekend fulfills the marriage
preparation requirements of the Archdiocese of Los

Epifanía ~ Por un momento, en este día de la Epifanía, nos centramos en la luz: "Levántate y
resplandece, Jerusalén! Porque ha llegado tu luz y la gloria del Señor alborea sobre ti." La Gracia y la luz
abundan en las escrituras de hoy. ¿Y cómo no? Si celebramos a Emmanuel — Dios con nosotros!
Observamos nuestras bendiciones y el don de Dios que da y que se nos ha dado. Hasta los Reyes Magos
vienen de Oriente siguiendo la luz — la estrella. La luz los guía. La luz les lleva al Señor. La luz les muestra el camino,
tanto dentro de ellos mismos como por fuera. Los dones que traen a Jesús son en sí mismos dones de luz: oro (para
reyes), incienso (para los dioses), mirra (para conservar el cuerpo a la hora de la muerte para el viaje hacia el hogar).
Todo lo concerniente a este día revela la luz, excepto una cosa. Herodes! Herodes el Grande! Herodes el inseguro!
Herodes miente y manipula para averiguar todo lo que puede acerca de este niño (Jesús) con la intención de
deshacerse del problema (los Santos Inocentes). Aunque hay luz en abundancia, así también hay oscuridad.
"Levántate y resplandece, Jerusalén! porque ha llegado tu luz y la gloria del Señor alborea sobre ti." Sí, Jerusalén es la
ciudad de la luz. Jerusalén, también, se convertirá en la ciudad de la oscuridad en ese triste y oscuro, oscuro viernes.
Mateo lo sabe. Mateo no puede permitirnos ver únicamente la luz . Mateo sabe que donde hay luz, seguirá la oscuridad.
Pero, al mismo tiempo, esta luz surge eterna. Aún en la oscuridad, vendrá una nueva luz. Después de todo, nos
referimos a Jesús; Emmanuel - Dios está con nosotros!

los novios que tengan planes de casarse por la Iglesia
Católica. Este encuentro llena los requisitos de preparación

Manifestando a Cristo: dichosos los que trabajan por la paz
Meditación ~ La alegría del amor, la respuesta al drama
del sufrimiento y el dolor, la fuerza del perdón ante la
ofensa recibida y la victoria de la vida ante el vacío de la muerte: todo
tiene su cumplimiento en el misterio de la encarnación de Cristo, de
su hacerse hombre y de su compartir con nosotros la debilidad
humana para transformarla con el poder de su resurrección (ver
Benedicto XVI, La puerta de la fe, 13).
Este Año de la Fe ha abierto la "puerta de la fe". La "puerta" litúrgica
que abre cada año el calendario es la solemnidad de María, la
Santísima Madre de Dios. Su Hijo es el Príncipe de la Paz; por eso,
su fiesta apropiadamente coincide con el Día Mundial de Oración por
la Paz, cuyo tema este año es "Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz".
La paz, escribe el papa, crece en lo profundo de cada alma humana
como el don de Dios. Florece cuando trabajamos a construir la paz
en el mundo, como individuos o como miembros de la familia
humana. A lo largo de enero, los Evangelios dominicales proclaman
las "manifestaciones" de Jesús como el Salvador del mundo: en la
Epifanía, a las naciones gentiles, en las personas de los reyes
magos; en la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, al pueblo de Israel
escuchando a Juan Bautista en el río Jordán; en las bodas de Caná,
al grupo más pequeño de los discípulos, cuando Jesús convierte el
agua en vino; y por fin en la sinagoga de Nazaret, cuando Jesús
inaugura su ministerio público proclamando su misión de traer
buenas noticias a los pobres, la libertad a los cautivos, la vista a los
ciegos y el alivio a los oprimidos.
Misión ~ Seguir manifestando la presencia de Jesús en el mundo,
adoptando la misión de traer la paz en su nombre, especialmente en
nuestras
casas
y
en
nuestras
comunidades.

DÍA MUNDIAL DEL MATRIMONIO

El día mundial de los matrimonios es celebrado el
Segundo domingo de Febrero para honrar el
compromiso de por vida entre marido y mujer. Las parejas que
celebran un aniversario significativo (25, 50, 60 o más) de su
sacramento serán reconocidas y renovarán sus votos
matrimoniales en la Misa de las 12:30a.m. (Español). Las parejas
registradas con anticipación recibirán un certificado
conmemorativo del aniversario de su sacramento y se podrán

Manifesting Christ: Blessed Are the Peacemakers
Meditation ~ The joy of love, the answer to the
drama of suffering and pain, the power to forgive
offenses, life's victory over death's emptiness: all this
finds fulfillment in the mystery of Christ's incarnation,
in Jesus becoming human and sharing our human weakness in
order to transform it by the power of his resurrection (see
Benedict
XVI,
Door
of
Faith,
13).
This Year of Faith has opened wide the "door of faith." The
liturgical "door" that opens every calendar year is the solemnity
of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Her Son is the Prince of
Peace, thus her feast fittingly coincides with the World Day of
Prayer for Peace, whose theme this year is "Blessed are the
peacemakers." Peace, writes the pope, grows from deep within
each human soul as God's gift. It flowers whenever we work to
build peace in the world, as individuals and as members of the
human family. As January unfolds, the Sunday Gospels
proclaim Jesus' "manifestations" as Savior of the world: on
Epiphany, to the Gentile nations, in the persons of the magi; on
the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, to the people of Israel
listening to John the Baptist at the Jordan; at Cana's wedding
feast, to the smaller circle of disciples, as Jesus changes water
into wine; finally, in his hometown synagogue, as Jesus
inaugurates his public ministry by proclaiming his mission of
bringing glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, sight to the
blind, freedom to the oppressed.
Mission ~ To continue manifesting Jesus' presence in the
world by making his mission our own, especially as
peacemakers in Jesus' name at home and in our communities.

WORLD MARRIAGE DAY ~ Sunday, February 10, 2013
World Marriage Day is held on the 2nd Sunday in
February to honor the lifelong commitment of
husband and wife. Couples celebrating significant
anniversaries (25 or more years) of their Sacrament will be
recognized and have their Sacramental vows renewed at the
10:00a.m. (English) and 12:30p.m. (Spanish) Masses. Couples
who register ahead of time will receive a commemorative
certificate of their Anniversary and have the opportunity to take
a photo with the Celebrant following the Mass. Registration
