fun, fellowship, and yummy food!
Every Third Sunday of the Month at 11:00am (after 10am Mass)
If you’ve never been to Young at Heart at St. Monica, you are really
missing out! This is a fun group of St. Monica parishioners ages 55 and
up who share laughter, friendship, and new experiences every 3rd
Sunday after 10am Mass. We have lots of interesting activities in store
this spring and summer:
April 17: “An Afternoon in Italy”
Fr. Martin will share his experiences living and studying in Rome while
Young at Heart Members “ciao down” on homemade Italian food. (No
charge to attend, but we do ask that you RSVP for this event so we
have enough food.)
May 15: Can You Spot the Scam?
A local police officer will offer a heads up on the latest scams and
schemes and how to avoid them. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
June 19: Wacky White Elephant Auction
A Young at Heart tradition, members and guests bid on auction items,
some treasures, some just for fun!
July (Exact Date TBD) - Young at Heart Retreat with Fr. Todd
Join us in renewing and restoring your spiritual self at a Young at Heart
retreat led by Fr. Todd Goodson.

The Church Renovation Update from Father Todd
In the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church a parish is defined in two ways, first as a community and then as a church:
“A parish is a certain community of the Christian faithful stably constituted in a particular church, whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor under the
authority of the diocesan bishop (CIC 515)”.
St. Monica parish has been a vibrant part of the Washington and Pike township communities since 1956. We are a very diverse group of people who in
some form or another are here every day to worship, study, pray, learn, serve, and be served. I am very grateful to the lay leaders and former pastors who
have gone before me and laid the ground work for the parish we are today. We are a different parish today than in 1956 or even in 2006. We are perhaps
a little more diverse, a little more varied in our language, culture, and race, yet we continue to be molded into the ever changing, ever growing body of
Christ. Our community continues to be more universal and more catholic in the truest sense of the word.
That is why it is important for us to move back into the church as soon as possible. As we know, our Church suffered a fire a few months ago and we have
been in much discussion about how we want the Church to look when we return. Like our community we want the Church to reflect some of our changes,
some of the ways we have grown. We are proposing a few changes that honor our past, recognize our present community, and prepare us for the future.
We believe that we can enhance our space and make it even more prayerful and beautiful when we return. I would like to share four basic areas we hope
to enhance and ask for your prayerful and financial support.
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel: St. Monica is a Church designed to emphasize the community gathered around the Eucharist, and for this reason it is
exceptionally simple in its design. We want to keep this as it reflects the life of the parish: alive and filled with people who strive to love each other and
the Lord. However, I feel we need a few improvements. The Blessed Sacrament chapel is not really prominent enough for a Catholic Church. Both the
celebration of the Eucharist and the Eucharist species are central to the Catholic Christian life. The Eucharist is the true presence of Christ, Body, Blood,
Soul, and Divinity. There is a desire to make some changes so that the Chapel where the Tabernacle resides maintains its prayerful space but is more
prominent and visible. After long discussions with our committee and the Archdiocese, it was decided to create a chapel for the Eucharist behind the
sanctuary. This will be the most significant and noticeable change in our church. Additional changes are increasing the size of the sanctuary space* and
adding a ramp so it is more accessible to the handicapped.
The Lighting: It has long been commented that our lighting is adequate but perhaps not the ideal look for our Church. Since we are already out of the
Church, we feel this is an opportune time to remove the current lighting grid and replace it with chandelier lighting more appropriate in a place of worship, eliminating any obstructions to the view of the beautiful stained glassed window designed to represent St. Monica. Additionally we want to make
the lighting style consistent in the Church, Narthex, and Daily Mass Chapel.
The Baptismal Font: Our project actually began with discussion of the font. Over time the copper and the wood of the font had begun to wear and it was
beginning to come apart in places. Additionally, over time wood and water are not a great combination. We have designed a new one that will have a
small and a large font, be made of a nice stone, and be in the shape of an Octagon to represent the eighth day in which Jesus rose from the dead. It will
be a little larger and still be able to be used for both infant and adult immersion baptisms.
Sacred Art: There are a few places where we wish to replace or add to the sacred art. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas and so,
while she is important particularly to the Mexican people she is actually the patroness of North and South America and a symbol of devotion for all of us.
We will create a chapel of devotion for her in the former Blessed Sacrament chapel complete with place for candles (to be used carefully) and flowers for
devotion. We are working with the corpus of our old crucifix to create a new larger one that will hang above the altar. Additionally, we are looking for
Stations of the Cross that will be located in the same area but be larger and have stronger images for devotion. Finally, in our devotional niches (the two
back corners of the Church) we would like an image of the Holy family in one corner and an image of our patroness St. Monica and St. Augustine in the
other. We believe that family life is important, and these images honor family as well as Christ and our patroness.
What I am are asking:
First I ask for your prayers. It is important that we stay close to what God wants for our Church community. Ask God to guide me as your pastor, to guide
our staff, and those involved in the project. Secondly, in this spirit of prayer, I am asking for your financial support for this project. Please prayerfully consider what God might be asking you to offer to help us complete this project. The sooner we are able to raise the money the sooner we can begin construction and return to our Church. We currently have over $500,000 pledged toward our overall goal of $1.4 million. So we still need around $900,000
pledged in order to meet our goal. We will formally launch a parish-wide capital campaign to raise the balance needed in May. Please watch for communications about events that will be held at which I will share in more detail about the renovation plans.

En el Código de Derecho Canónico de la Iglesia define una parroquia de dos maneras, primero como comunidad y después como Iglesia:
“La parroquia es una determinada comunidad de fieles constituida de modo estable en la Iglesia particular, cuya cura pastoral, bajo la autoridad
del Obispo diocesano, se encomienda a un párroco, como su pastor propio. (CIC 515)”.
La Parroquia Sta. Mónica ha sido una parte vibrante de las comunidades de los municipios de Washington y Pike desde 1956. Somos un grupo
muy diverso de personas que de alguna forma u otra vienen aquí todos los días a adorar, a estudiar, a orar, a aprender, a servir y a ser
servidos. Estoy muy agradecido con los líderes laicos y pastores anteriores que han estado aquí antes que yo y han puesto el trabajo de tierra para la
parroquia que somos hoy en día. Somos una parroquia muy diferente de la que fuimos en 1956 o incluso en el 2006. Tal vez somos un poco más diversa,

algunos de nuestros cambios, algunas de las maneras en las que hemos crecido. Estamos proponiendo algunos cambios que
honran nuestro pasado, reconocen nuestra comunidad presente y nos preparan para el futuro. Creemos que podemos mejorar nuestro espacio y hacerlo
aún más devoto y hermoso cuando regresemos. Me gustaría compartir cuatro áreas básicas, que esperamos mejorar en las que le pido su apoyo tanto en
oración y como financieramente.
La Capilla del Santísimo: Sta. Mónica es una Iglesia diseñada para enfatizar la comunidad reunida alrededor de la Eucaristía y por esta razón es excepcionalmente simple en su diseño. Queremos mantener esto ya que refleja la vida de la parroquia: viva y llena de personas que se esfuerzan por amarse
los unos con los otros y al Señor. Sin embargo, creo que necesita algunas mejoras. La Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento no es
realmente lo suficientemente prominente como para una Iglesia Católica. Tanto la celebración de la Eucaristía y las especies de la Eucaristía son fundamentales para la vida Cristiana Católica. La Eucaristía es la verdadera presencia de Cristo, Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad. Hay un deseo de hacer algunos cambios para que la capilla donde se encuentra el tabernáculo mantenga su espacio orante pero es más prominente y visible. Después de largas
discusiones con nuestro Comité y la Arquidiócesis, se decidió crear una capilla para la Eucaristía detrás del Santuario. Este será el cambio más importante

representar a Sta. Mónica. Además queremos tener el mismo estilo de iluminación tanto en la iglesia, como en el Nártex y la Capilla de la Misa diaria.
La Pila Bautismal: Nuestro proyecto comenzó realmente con la discusión de la fuente. Con el tiempo el cobre y la madera de la fuente habían comenzado
a desgastarse y estaba comenzando a desarmarse en algunos lugares. Además, con el tiempo la madera y el agua no son una buena combinación. Hemos
diseñado una nueva que tendrá una fuente pequeña y una grande, hecha de una piedra y en la forma de un octágono que representa el octavo día en
que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos. Será un poco más grande y todavía pueda ser utilizada para ambos bautismos para niños y de inmersión para
adultos.
Arte Sagrado: Hay pocos lugares donde queremos cambiar o añadir arte sagrado. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la patrona de las Américas y aunque
ella es importante especialmente para los mexicanos es realmente la patrona de las Américas tanto del norte y como del sur y es un símbolo de devoción
para todos nosotros. Vamos a crear una capilla de devoción para ella en la antigua Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento con un lugar para velas (para ser
utilizado con cuidado) y flores para devoción. Estamos trabajando con el corpus de nuestro antiguo crucifijo para crear otro más grande que será colgado
sobre el altar. Además, estamos buscando estaciones del Viacrucis que se ubicarán en las mismas zonas pero más grandes y más fuertes imágenes de
devoción. Finalmente, en nuestros nichos devocionales (las dos esquinas traseras de la iglesia) queremos una imagen de la Sagrada Familia en una
esquina y una imagen de nuestra patrona Sta. Mónica y San Agustín en el otro. Creemos que la vida familiar es importante, y estas imágenes honran la
familia, así como Cristo y nuestra patrona.
Qué le estoy pidiendo: En primer lugar les pido sus oraciones. Es importante que estemos cerca de Dios para saber qué es lo que quiere para la Iglesia
de nuestra comunidad. Pídale a Dios que me guíe como su párroco, para guiar a nuestro personal, y a los involucrados en el proyecto. En segundo lugar,
en ese espíritu de oración, le pido su apoyo financiero para este proyecto. Por favor considere en oración lo que Dios podría pedirle que ofrezca para
ayudarnos a terminar este proyecto. Lo más pronto que podamos recaudar el dinero lo más pronto que podremos
empezar a reconstruir y regresar a nuestra iglesia. Actualmente tenemos más de $500.000 comprometidos para nuestra meta de $ 1,4
millones. Así que todavía tenemos $900.000 por recaudar para cumplir nuestro objetivo. Se lanzará formalmente una campaña capital en la parroquia
para recaudar el dinero necesario en mayo. Por favor espere más información acerca de los eventos que se llevarán a cabo en los que voy a compartir
más detalles sobre los planes de renovación.

IMMIGRANT WELCOME CENTER HOSTS
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
The Immigrant Welcome Center empowers immigrants
by connecting them to the people, places and resources
that enable them to build successful lives and enrich
our community. We are blessed to host a branch of the
Immigrant Welcome Center here at St. Monica, staffed
by knowledgeable IWC Natural Helpers who connect
immigrants and refugees with the services they need
close to their home and work. They provide resources
and referrals to social service agencies, health care
centers, schools, job training centers, and other
organizations that can provide direct help. Assistance is
provided in English, Spanish, and French
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Natural Helpers are trained through the IWC, but
several St. Monica hosts are needed to welcome and
check-in immigrants and other members of our
community seeking assistance at our location.
TIME COMMITMENT
Volunteers are needed each Sunday from 1:30 (after
12:30 Mass) to 3:30 p.m. You can sign up for one
Sunday a month or as many as you would like. Hosts do
not need to be bilingual,

SPRED Students: Congratulations to our SPRED students
Christian Leonardo, Kevin Garcia and Javier Silva-Flores!
They received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the
Archdiocesan SPRED Mass on April 3. Christian and Kevin
also received their First Holy Communion at the same
Mass. May they always remain close to Jesus!
First Communion Retreat: On Saturday, April 23 our 240
First Communion candidates and their parent/parents will
attend a retreat at St. Monica from 9:00 am—12:00 pm. This
is ONLY for the candidates and not siblings. Please bring your
banner and First Communion picture order form—with
payment—for the picture. Invitations were sent to homes. If

Confirmation Registration: 7th and 8th graders who will be
preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this fall
must have their registration form and a copy of their
baptism certificate turned in to the Religious Education
Office by Sunday, April 17. You should have received a
packet with this materiel after the parent meeting in

Divorce and Beyond
A Catholic based peer-ministry support group designed to
help guide men and women through the process of divorce.
The program explores the stress, anger, blame and guilt of
divorce with the goal of leading participants toward ultimate
forgiveness, happiness and growth. Sessions are scheduled
at various locations and times throughout the archdiocese.
The next session is April 12 - May 17, every Tuesday
beginning April 12 from 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. and running
through May 17. Meetings will be at The Catholic Center,
1400 N. Meridian Street. The sessions are Open to all faiths.
Participant fee is $30, which includes workbook and
materials. There are scholarships available. Please contact

Catholic Business Exchange
Jonathan Nalli, CEO of St. Vincent and Senior Vice President
of Ascension Health, will address the April Catholic Business
Exchange. He will speak on the subject: My Faith & Virtuous
Servant Leadership at St. Vincent.
The event is Friday morning, April 15, at the North Side
Knights of Columbus. Mass starts at 7am and the program
will be finished by 9am. Cost for the program includes a
great breakfast and is $15 in advance for members and $21
for non-members. Registration is required. To register, pay

St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drop Box
Parishioners who want to donate clothing to help the poor
can use the new St. Vincent de Paul drop box located in the
southeast corner of the parking lot just east of the
gym. Clothing should be clean and in good shape (no stains
or tears) and must be in heavy-duty bags that are tied
shut. Non-clothing, like toys and household items, are not
appropriate for the clothing drop box. Thank you for your
donations in help of the poor!
Please check the “Lost & Found” Bin in the
Narthex
Are you missing a coat, hat, gloves, or an umbrella?
Sometimes these things are left in church. We place them in
our Lost & Found bin, but it is overflowing! Many items
have been in the bin for months, so are going to share
anything left after April 17 with those in need.

CENTRO DE BIENVENIDA AL INMIGRANTE
ACERCA DEL MINISTERIO
El Centro de Bienvenida al Inmigrante ayuda a los
inmigrantes conectándolos con las personas, lugares y
recursos disponibles para que construyan sus vidas con
éxito y enriquezcan a la comunidad. Tenemos la
bendición de patrocinar a una sucursal del Centro de
Bienvenida al Inmigrante aquí en Sta. Mónica, con un
personal bien informado que ayuda a conectar a los
inmigrantes y refugiados con los servicios que necesitan
cerca de sus hogares y lugar trabajo. Ofrecen recursos y
referencias a agencias de servicios sociales, centros de
salud, escuelas, centros de capacitación de trabajo y
otras organizaciones que pueden proporcionar ayuda
directa. Se proporciona ayuda en inglés, español y
francés
CÓMO PUEDE AYUDAR
Los Ayudantes Naturales son entrenados a través del
IWC, pero se necesitan varios voluntarios de Sta.
Mónica para dar la bienvenida y registrar a los
inmigrantes y a otros miembros de nuestra comunidad
que buscan ayuda en nuestra localidad.
TIEMPO DE COMPROMISO
Los voluntarios se necesitan cada domingo de
1:30 (después de la Misa de 12:30) a 3:30 p.m. Usted
puede ser voluntario un domingo al mes o cuantos
domingos desee. No necesita ser bilingüe.

Caja para Donar Ropa de San Vicente de
Paul
Los feligreses que quieran donar ropa para ayudar a los
pobres pueden usar la caja de San Vicente de Paul
localizada en la esquina suroeste de estacionamiento
cerca del gimnasio. La ropa debe de estar limpia y en
buenas condiciones (sin manchas o rotas) y deben de
ponerlas en bolsas de plástico resistentes y
amarrarlas. Otros artículos, como juguetes y artículos
para el hogar, no son para dejar en esta caja. ¡Gracias
por sus donaciones para ayudar a los pobres!

Clases de inglés como segundo idioma para
principiantes e intermediarios empezarán el 9 de
septiembre. Las clases son cada martes y jueves de

Preparing for RCIA:
 How will you continue to grow in God’s love
and continue to learn his Will for you?
 What prayer method has worked best for
you? How will you pray each day?
 How will you let others know the love of God
through you? What special gifts has God
given you? How might you use these gifts for
God’s work – in family, Church, School, Work,
World?
 If you were to write a “RULE” – what would be
important to include in it?

Continue to sing an Easter song about Jesus’
resurrection at meal time each day
Write a “RULE” for yourself – like the Rule a
religious community might have. What will it be
important for you to do daily, weekly? What
kinds of things will you avoid in life? What will be
your focus in life – the place of family, work,
sacrifice, prayer, rest? Combine these things into
your own personal guide or RULE. Note your core
“mission.” Renew your rule annually, adapting it
as you grow.

Marriage Day Celebration /
Celebra el Día del Matrimonio
The Office of Pro-Life and Family Life invites all married
couples of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis to a special
celebration to honor the sanctity of marriage on April 24
at 2:00 pm at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Rev. Msgr.
William F. Stumpf will celebrate the Solemn Mass. Special
recognition will be given to the longest married couple
and the most recent married couple, and couples married
60 years or more will be acknowledged for their
examples of life- long commitment and love. There will
be a reception held after the Mass across the street at
the Catholic Center in Assembly Hall. The event is free of
charge, but registration is required. Registration deadline
is April 11, 2016. (Please register early as seating capacity
is limited.) Registration can be completed online
at www.archindy.org/weddingcelebrations or by mailing
the completed form to the Office of Pro-Life and Family
