Althoughthechurchmembershipanditsgymanfa
havesurgedandwanedovertheyears,the“Little
WelshChurchontheHill”anditsadjacentWelsh
PioneerCemeteryhavebeenlovedandcaredfor
bydescendantsofthefirstmembers.Nowthe
descendentshavedecidedtoresurrectitsgymanfa
andhopefullycontinueitinthecomingyears.
OnJuly10ththerewillbetheusualchurchservice
at10:00a.m.followedbyatraditionalWelshTea
withWelshcakes.Thegymanfawillstartat1:00.
AnumberofWelsh-themeditemswillbeforsale
duringtheday,includingreprintsoftheoriginal
StanHaringpicturedoneforDorothy(Tudor)

Another Successful
“Welsh Weekend for Everyone”
HowsplendidwasourweekendWelsheventat
ChristUnitedMethodistChurchinWatertownin
May!JohnGood,musician,story-teller,and
cymanfadirector,gaveawonderfulconcertFriday
nighttoagoodcrowd,whichincludedmembersof
thechurchandpeoplefromWatertown.
OnSaturdaythelargefleamarketinthevestibule
greetedus:thebooks,music,andWelshitemsgot
pickedoveralldaylong.Theworkshopsand
presentationswereinformativeandentertaining:
“DisappearingofOwainGlyndwr,”theWelshflag
andkite-making;the1904WelshRevival;
Patagonia;andWelshfolktales.
Inthelateafternoon,afterTea,weenjoyedthe
usualvariedandtalentedNosonLawen,withMr.
Goodpresiding.Theawardsforpoetryandprose
weremade,withthethemethisyearbeingEnfys/
Rainbow.Thewinningessaywas“PenielChapel’s
Rainbow”byCaroleeSchultz,excerptedbelow.
WeretiredtoLyonsIrishPubindowntown
Watertown,andenjoyedagoodmealandagood
singalong,joinedbyafewoftheotherpatrons.
SomehowJohnGoodstillhadsomegasinthetank,
andledafinegymanfaganuonSundayafternoon.
Upwardsof200peoplefilledthesanctuary,and
wesurprisedMr.Goodwithourabilitytosingso
wellynGymraeg.Llongyfarchiadau,pawb!
PENIELCHAPEL’SRAINBOWby“Hope”
God’scovenantwithNoahdidnotstopinthattimeand
placeofhistory.ItwasGod’spromiseforallhumanity
foralltime,evenPenielChapelin2013.
InGenesis9:11-17;Godsaid,
“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life
be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will
there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said. “This
is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and
you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all
generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds,
and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the
earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the
rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my
covenant between me and you and all living creatures of
every kind....
TheWelshimmigrantshadastrongsenseofGod’s
covenant,andweremostlikelyremindedofthatwhen
theytoosawtherainbows….(they)wereseekingGod’s
promiseoffreedomtoworshipHimintheirfaith,aswell
asthehopeofworkintheminesandfertilecropland….
IntheareaoftheOshkoshWelshSettlement,Peniel
Chapelisatthesouthernedge,builtin1856,nodoubt
byfamiliesrelyingonGod’spromises.Eventhoughthe
churchclosedin1977forregularworship,thePeniel
GymanfaGanuAssociationkeptthetraditionofmusic
alivewiththeannualGymanfaGanu.Theyalsorelied
onGod’spromisetocarefortheoldstructurefor
generationstocome.
In2011,prayersandsupportledtothedecisionto
renovatethebuilding….Monieswereavailablefor
paintingandlightmaintenance,butwherewasitto
comefromin2013whenanewsteelshakeroofwas
neededtoreplacetheleakingroof?
AsinNoah’stime,Penielsupporters’prayerswere
heardbyGod,howeverfewpeoplewouldtrulybelieve.
Theamountneededin2013foranewroofwas
unfathomableforachurchwithoutregularincome.
Evenmoreunbelievablewashowlittletimewas
availabletoraisethemoney.Aweddingwaswithin3
monthsandtheareaoftheleak,theceilingofthe
diningroom/kitchen,hadtoberemovedbyvolunteers
andanewceilinginstalledbyprofessionals.Also,the
consultantsaidanewroofontheentirestructurehad
tobeinstalledbeforewinter.Onefaithfulvolunteer
evenasked,“Howisthatgoingtohappen?”
GodcanmakeanythinghappenandHedid.He
remindedfourvolunteerswhowereawestruckafter
tearingdownthatceiling.Astheywerecleaningup,
theywentoutsidetoseeGOD’SRAINBOWintheeast!
ThistrulywasassurancethatGodindeedhadHishand
inthePenielproject.
GodcontinuestoremindusofHiscovenant,evenwhen
arainbowisnotpresent.TheWelshinWisconsin
continuethetraditionswhichGodgiftedtothose
beforetheirancestorsleftWales.HeblessesPenielin
miraculouswaysandentruststhevolunteerswith
carryingonHispromisesforthefutureofPenieland
theWelshintheOshkoshWelshSettlement.
MayGod’spromisesthroughHisSonJesusChristnever
beforgotten,andmaywealwaysrelyonHimwhenour
livesseeminsurmountable.
Allinall,ourweekendwasthoroughlyenjoyable
weekendandcauseforencouragement.

SundanceCinemasinMadisonaboutthenew
WelshfilmDarkHorse(showingthroughJuly7).
BettywasbornDecember2,1928inMonroe,the
daughterofWalterandThelma(Kundert)Timm.
ShegraduatedfromMonroeHighSchoolin1946
andattendedGreenCountyNormalSchool.Betty
earnedaBachelorsdegreeandMastersdegreein
elementaryeducationfromU.W.Platteville.She
taughtruralschoolbeforeteachingelementary
schoolinBrodheaduntilretirement.Bettywasan
avid WisconsinBadgerfanattendingmany
sportingeventsandwasabigboosterofMonroe
Cheesemakerathletics.
Sheenjoyedtravelingwithherfriends,Janet
MorganandRuthPeterson.Shewasamemberof
St.John’sUnitedChurchofChrist,St.John’schoir,
MonroeBoosterClub,RetiredTeachers
Association,SweetAdelinesofAlpineValley,
