Slamdot Opens First-Ever Website Retail
Store: The Slamdot Store. Knoxville-based web
developer Slamdot has unveiled a first-of-itskind retail store selling professional web site
packages, and offering in-store training and support. As Slamdot founder, Sean Christman says
they make professional web sites affordable and
streamline the buying experience. Customers
talk to a shopping assistant who helps them
select the web site package that best fits their
needs, and then check out in a traditional retail
style environment. Affordability and ease of
purchase in a store setting are huge advantages.
Once the sale is complete, they also handle the
development of the site, work one-on-one with
customers, and provide expertise all along the
way. Customers also have opportunities to
attend “SlamCamps,” which offer hands-on
training on a variety of topics ranging from web
hosting and email to social media and Internet
marketing. Slamdot’s exportable business model
also includes in-store technical support,
enabling customers to bring in their computer
or mobile device and receive personalized, oneon-one assistance. Completing the one-stop
shopping idea, Slamdot also provides businessclass web hosting starting at $11/month.
Slamdot is opening its first store at 108 South
Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, with ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4th,
2009. For more information, contact Sean
Christman (865) 238-5601, [email protected] or http://www.slamdot.com.

P
Quotes ‘n Notes
by Bettye Sisco
I received this email and thought
you might enjoy it:
John is the kind of guy
you love to hate... always in
a good mood with something positive to say. When
asked how he was doing, he
would reply, “If I were any
better, I would be twins! If
an employee was having a
bad day, John was telling
them to look on the positive side of the situation.
This style made me curious, so I asked him, “I
don't get it! You can't be positive all of the time.
How do you do it?”
He replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to
myself, you have two choices today. You can choose
to be in a good mood or a bad mood. I choose to
be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or choose to learn
from it. I choose to learn from it.” Every time
someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to
accept their complaining or I can point out the positive.
“Yeah, right, it's not easy,” I protested. “Yes, it
is. “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all
the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose
how you react to situations, how people affect your
mood and you choose to be in a good mood or bad
mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you
live your life.”
I reflected on what he said. Soon I left to start
my own business. We lost touch, but I often
thought about him when I made a choice about life
instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that he was involved in
a serious accident, falling 60 feet from a tower.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive
care, he was released from the hospital. I saw him
about six months later and asked how he was. “If I
were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?”
I declined, but I asked what had gone through his
mind as the accident took place.
“The first thing was the well-being of my soonto-be born daughter. Then, as I lay on the ground, I
remembered that I had two choices: I could choose
to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live.”
“The paramedics were great. But when they
wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions
on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really
scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I
knew I needed to take action.” “What did you
do?”
“Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting
questions at me. She asked if I was allergic to anything. Yes, I replied.” The doctors and nurses
stopped working and waited for my reply. I took a
deep breath and yelled, “'Gravity.'' Over their
laughter, I told them, “I am choosing to live.
Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.”
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but
also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from
him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own. After all, today is the
tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Looking for New Year’s
Resolution? Give Junk
Bee Gone a Buzz!
If your New Year’s
resolution is to clean
out the house and get
rid of the unneeded
junk and paper, Junk
Bee Gone is the business to call. It is now
in its fifth year of serving customers all over
Knoxville, and they
Courtney Such
are not going to slow
down. With the full
service removal existing since the very beginning, drop off dumpsters added three years
into it, and document shredding added a year
later, this company has been quickly growing
since day one.
Junk Bee Gone can take almost anything,
except for hazardous waste. Whether it is up
in the attic or in the corner of the basement,
the team will go in and take what you do not
want. You can also have a dumpster delivered
to your house so you can do your own
personal clean out, but do not push yourself.
Thomas Noble, Manager of Junk Bee Gone,
said, “Be careful with the items; safety is
important. We can come out and get it for
you. That’s the great thing about our service.”
This company also offers document shredding. “Document shredding was frequently
requested by our customers,” said Owner and
President Mike Such. “We have a partnership
with a company that has an industrial shredder. Our employees sign a confidentiality
agreement. The customer will receive a certified document of destruction, stating that the
material was safely handled. Once it is on the
truck, it goes straight to the shredder. It never
stays on the truck.”

In the past few years "entrepreneurial" reality
TV shows have become interesting viewing demonstrating the successes and challenges
inherent in being an entrepreneur or small business owner. From UK imports, such as ABC’s
Shark Tank (I was fortunate to have a client
invited to participate) - to productions such as
NBC's "The Restaurant" - reality-business TV
offers realistic insight into the highs and lows of
starting a business, growing a business, and
sometimes making the decision to close a business. Whether you are a start-up seeking investment (ABC’s Shark Tank) or an established business in need of a makeover to prevent failure these shows deliver what could be considered a
one hour “master’s” class in how to succeed in
business.
Here are some ideas that small business owners might consider that are taught in these
shows:
When Seeking Funding - Don't Over-Value
Your Business's Worth
One of the more common mistakes start-ups
make - as seen on Shark Tank - is overvaluing
the worth of their business to potential investors.
Over-valuing your business can quickly play
against you as a potential investors or lenders
pick apart your performance projections thus
losing all credibility.
Remember that proper financial planning and
especially market research can go a long way
towards delivering a funded business startup or
project.
Perfect Your Elevator Pitch and Presentation
Skills
One of the most excruciating parts about
Shark Tank is those few moments when budding entrepreneurs get to present their business
elevator pitch to the line-up of potential
investors (or lenders) - and, whether it's through
nerves or poor preparation, their presentation
falls apart. If you are looking to secure funds or
presenting your product or services at a trade
show or to a potential customer, developing and
practicing your elevator pitch is extremely
important. I will share with you part II next
month.
