We believe that Evansville is a great place to live, work and conduct business. The Chamber encourages you to support the local business community by shopping at the businesses listed and displayed throughout this directory. It is through the continued investment made by these businesses, and your willingness to support them with your dollars, that our community is able to prosper. The Evansville Chamber of Commerce & Tourism has served the local business community for over 50 years. We have an ongoing commitment to be an advocate for our members and the business community at large on the local, county and state levels; to promote as well as facilitate economic development initiatives undertaken in our area; and to support local tourism projects and programs. Over the past year, the Chamber has maintained several services that provide value to our member businesses. These services include, but are not limited to: a web-enabled business directory, health insurance options, Buy Local promotions and initiatives , local community-wide business events, community-wide rallies and raffles, and informative membership meetings. In addition, members are affiliated with community support initiatives such as our high school scholarship program. In addition to these programs, the Chamber is committed to enhancing our communications with our membership as well as the community at large by providing enhanced weekly eNewsletters and articles in the local newspaper. We are also working to expand our online marketing efforts through our website and the social media. We are working in collaboration with the City of Evansville to continue to promote and encourage economic development in Evansville. We would like to share a sincere Thank You to our members, the City of Evansville and Unified Newspaper Group for their support of our organization and sponsorship of this directory. - The Evansville Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Board of Directors www.evansvillechamber.org 5 Welcome to Evansville Our Community With a population of nearly 5,000, Evansville cherishes its strong sense of community and small town charm. Residents gather often for concerts, festivals and celebrations. With its safe neighborhoods and quiet tree-lined streets, small town values permeate our way of life. Pride is taken in our exceptional schools, noted historic district, numerous parks and historic library. Located only 23 miles south of Madison and 18 miles west of Janesville, Evansville offers small town living coupled with easy access to the world-class universities, arts, and entertainment traditionally found only in metropolitan areas. Photo courtesy of Laura Janisch Photo courtesy of Laura Janisch But, you won’t have to leave the city limits to experience the arts - Evansville is home to nationally-recognized local artists and artisans featured in local galleries. In addition to a robust arts scene, Evansville offers fantastic access to area parks, lakes, and trails - a potent combination resulting in a fantastic quality of life for Evansville residents! Designated as a Tree City USA since 2002 and Bird City USA since 2011, Evansville is an outdoor enthusiasts’ dream. Situated midway between two of Rock County’s most picturesque parks - Gibbs Lake and Magnolia Bluff - and under consideration for an expansion of the Ice Age 6www.evansvillechamber.org Welcome to Evansville National Scenic Trail, the Evansville area offers incredible opportunities to live in, and explore, the great outdoors. As a Tree City USA, the city plants trees each year along street terraces and in the public parks. In addition, the Evansville Community School District recently established the Grove Community Forest Trail to connect the school buildings with adjacent natural areas and Wind Prairie Park. Besides enhancing our green space, the trail serves as an outdoor classroom for hands-on experience with conservation and natural resources. Green Leader Evansville is home to a number of initiatives focused on energy conservation and renewable energy which have been built on a tradition of alternative energy. As an example of this tradition, Baker Manufacturing, the community’s oldest operating business, built windmills from the late 1880s until the 1950s. Examples of vintage Baker windmills can be seen in the Eager Economy Building, at the Madison Street entrance to the Leonard-Leota Park and in the Wind Prairie Park. Today Evansville is recognized as a green leader in Wisconsin and was recently selected as a Photo courtesy of MEUW pilot Wisconsin Energy Independent Community. As a symbolic link between Evansville past and present, a 100 kW wind turbine was erected next to the city’s wastewater treatment plant in 2010. In addition, residents take pride in the school district’s state of the art high school that includes geothermal heating/cooling. The annual spring Energy Fair is celebrating its 10th year in 2012, and is well-known regionally for highlighting green businesses and initiatives in the area. Since then, the community of Evansville has carefully preserved and revitalized its historic residential and commercial buildings - making our community home to what the Wisconsin Historical Society has identified as “the finest collection of 1840s to 1915 architecture of any small town in Wisconsin.” The recent reinstallation of the original brickpaved Main Street was a signature revitalization project that complimented the historic appearance to our downtown business district. In fact, many downtown business owners have undertaken major building restorations, with several projects receiving historic preservation awards. Self-guided walking tours are available to appreciate the architecture of historic buildings in and around the historic district. In 2007, in recognition for the many contributions of the farming community, Evansville was declared by the proclamation of the State of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Soybean Association as “The Evansville Soybean Capitol of Wisconsin.” A display with historical information regarding the proclamation and contributions of the agribusiness City Hall circa 1898 Photo courtesy of Ruth Ann Montgomery and farmers is located in the lower level of the Eager Building at 7 East Main Street. Agriculture – Past & Present The agribusiness and area farmers have been important to the Evansville community since 1839. The biggest crops in the area are corn and soybeans. Native grasses and prairie plantings, vegetables and organic produce also have a significant presence among our local farms. Several prominent Evansville businesses cater to agriculture providing services such as grain storage, truck and rail shipping, fertilizer and agronomy, and large animal veterinarians. The Grange circa 1910. Photo courtesy of Ruth Ann Montgomery Evansville developed as a community as a result of the working relationship of the farmers and city residents. In 1874, farmers and members of the Grange, also referred to as the Patrons of Husbandry, organized and formed the Evansville Mercantile Association. They opened a general store named The Grange. The Grange was an important part of the Evansville economy for over 100 years. The store was housed in a downtown business site, presently referred to as The Grange Mall. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Six neighborhood parks and the flagship Leonard Leota Park comprise space available to people in the greater Evansville area. The parks include: • Leonard Leota Park - North Madison Street • Westside Park - South Sixth Street • Countryside Park - North Water Street • Franklin Park - South Union Street • Seminary Park - South Fourth Street • Brzezinski Park - Corner of West Church and Crawford Streets • Wind Prairie Park - South Second Street and Old Highway 92 For current parks related information, please contact City Hall at 608.882.2266. Leonard Leota Park In the heart of Leonard Leota Park is Lake Leota, a 40-acre, stream-fed body of water for canoeing, fishing and ice skating. The 20 acres within the park were dredged in the winter of 2008-2009 to restore the lake for recreational use and wildlife habitat. The stone creek walls, picnic tables, bell tower, buildings and other stone structures were built during the Great Depression as Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration projects. Rehabilitation of the creek walls is currently underway. The city is in the initial application stages to have the Leonard Leota Park listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a designed landscape. Leonard Leota Park also offers the following amenities: • Baseball and softball diamonds • Basketball court • Tennis courts • Hiking areas • Picnic areas including five shelter houses • Playground areas in four locations • Skate park • Disc Golf coming soon The newest feature to the park is the welcome center and local history museum in the former Baker Office Building. This historic building was no longer in use by Baker Manufacturing and moved to the park’s Madison Street entrance in 1999. The Evansville Grove Society has restored the building to serve as office space for the society and as a local history museum.
