It helps bridge the gap between the dues and Yesterday, I was on the phone, when I casually looked out my window and saw the most amazing sight. A buck, a doe, and their child were having a family picnic in my backyard. It took my breath away. We have had deer in our yard before, but never a whole family. The male with his antlers was especially impressive. And, there was something endearing about how gentle he was with the doe and their little one. Not wanting to startle the deer into running away, I moved carefully to get Janine, and I started snapping photos with my iPhone like crazy to send to my kids. What was it that moved me so? There was the sheer beauty of these magnificent creatures. And, I was also touched by this family scene. How wonderful it is that at the most basic level of nature, the tenderness of family members towards each other is so deeply ingrained. It was not a coincidence that my instinctive response was to want to reach out and share this scene with my own family. But, perhaps most of all, I was touched by the suddenness of this unexpected gift. I was having a pretty ordinary day, and suddenly my heart was opened to this remarkable scene. I am a planner by nature and my lists have lists. When I can move a project from start to finish, I feel a sense of accomplishment. Yet, so often, the moments of my life that move me the most are the ones that I didn’t plan for. At the core of our Tradition is the belief that within the fabric of life, there are unexpected surprises waiting to delight us. Boaz awakens in the middle of the night to discover the beautiful Ruth at his feet. Moses discovers a fire inside of him that will not be quenched. Life is not ruled by the iron clad laws of necessity. We experience things that exceed our expectations. It could be the moment we fall in love. It could be something clever our grandchild says that makes us laugh. It could be an act of kindness that lifted our spirits. Every morning we recite in our prayers, ha’ mechadesh b’tuvo b’chol yom tamid ma’aseh b’reshit/We are grateful to the God who renews Creation each day. To be a Jew is to be open to the new. May each of us be touched by unexpected gifts in the year to come. May the world surprise us in inspiring ways. And, may we discover unexpected beauty, courage and strength in ourselves and in each other. Janine, David and Miri, Shani and I wish all of our friends at HNT a shana tova u’metukah, a happy, sweet and fulfilling New Year. Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum 2 budgetary needs. Personal Reflections I hope you all had a wonderful summer and enjoyed some of the most beautiful weather in Seattle! Summer always seems to go just a little too fast, and it’s hard to believe that we are coming up on the High Holidays soon. So, that means it is time to get ready for Rosh Hashanah, when you are supposed to review your actions and work on a plan to change your negative behaviors. I always try to focus even more on how I can do more positive behaviors; primarily, what am I going to do next year to impact others in a positive way, stretch myself, and get out of my comfort zone. It seems that we all just naturally seek that comfort zone; it’s just easier – it’s the path of least resistance. However to really grow as individuals and lead more meaningful lives, we often need to take the plunge and stretch ourselves to do something that we may Everyone My mom, Eileen Mintz z”l, has always been my role model in getting out of that comfort zone – that is how she lived her life. She knew that if she was to inspire others and accomplish all that she wanted, she would have to stretch herself, and besides, it made life a lot more exciting for her! I have to admit that I left my comfort zone when I became president of HNT. I was quite content being the co-chair of the Membership Committee and doing a lot behind the scenes. However, I made the decision to serve our congregation as president because I care so much about HNT, and I wanted to help impact our synagogue in new ways. Besides, we’re going in such a positive direction that I’m excited to be even more involved! I will be out of my ‘zone’ this Rosh Hashanah as I address the entire congregation to ask for your contribution to our Annual Appeal. When I do ask for your support, please remember that getting out of that comfort zone also applies to giving. As Jews, we want to be sure to give until it’s uncomfortable…and then give some more. All the best, and L’Shana Tova! The stories, the visits, the phone calls, the food, the invitations for Shabbat, the beautiful cards, the notes and letters, and the donations have been mind blowing. We all knew that Bob was well-loved and respected, but this was something else! Please know that my children and their spouses, my six grandsons, and my sisters-in-law truly appreciate the community wide outpouring of love and support. We love hearing “Bob” stories so please continue to send them to us. It’s important, especially, for my grandsons to know about their grandfather from those who knew him. They give my children a different view of their father and father-in-law. They also give my sisters-in-law a unique view of their big brother. The mental space used to imagine every aspect of this event suddenly morphs into a physical place, and your mind has to shift from potentiality to actuality. It could be your impending bat mitzvah day, graduation, a wedding day, or your longed-for summer vacation. We dream about our significant events so long before we ever experience them that we become used to them living inside our minds where we can control them. It is often a jolt, albeit an exciting one, to find yourself actually living in it. For six years, I was in Rabbinical School. I knew that at some point that would lead to the event of becoming a rabbi, and having the privilege of serving a real congregation, but that was a long time away! My reality was that I was a full time student, who went to classes, absorbed texts, developed skills, acquired for myself teachers, and taught on the side. There was this far off time, though, where I would be transformed into this “Rabbi” and would be unleashed onto the world! And then, in May 2014, it happened, and here I am. Slightly in shock, pinching myself to check that this is really happening. But, here’s the thing about reality. It never happens to just one person. We are not islands (well, technically, at Herzl Ner Tamid, we are on one!). The moment we launch into a new stage of life, and experience a shift in our identity, we share it with the people around us. Others witness our transformation and respond to us anew. We help each other grow into our new roles when we share in our emotions and assure one another that, indeed, a transition occurred. Already I feel embraced by this community. I am beginning the amazing process of getting to know you, hear your stories, learn your hopes and dreams, and absorb the culture here. I am a rabbi because you allow it; when you ask questions of me, you permit me to be your teacher. When you come to me for support, advice, or for a friendly hug, you are embracing me as your spiritual leader. All transitions, once they touch the ground, no matter how personal they may feel, are also communal. I look forward so much to embarking upon the Jewish New Year 5775 with you and being an integral part of your important moments and transitions. This very moment calls for a blessing: a shehechianu, an outpouring of gratitude for enabling us to reach this season. New High Holiday Ticket Policy: Welcome Policy From Ticket Holders to Stakeholders We are so proud to be a part of Herzl-Ner Tamid. We are a warm inclusive community with spiritual, educational and social opportunities for all phases of our individual and family lives. We embrace and express our traditions within the tenets of Conservative Judaism AND we are also on the cutting edge of finding new forms of expression and unexplored pathways to spiritual growth. Whether it’s a Purim Shpiel or Torahthon, Daytimers or Day of Service, Mitzvah Corps or Halleluyah chorus, our congregational community provides many doors for each of us to enter. We celebrate together during s’machot and draw strength from a minyan when we grieve, and we always know that Herzl-Ner Tamid is here for you, for us. Now we are opening our arms wider yet by initiating a new and more welcoming policy of not requiring tickets for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for our HNT members. We don’t ask for a ticket other times and we strive to be as welcoming on the High Holidays as we are on Shabbat and other festivals. We’re evolving from ticket holders to stakeholders as evidenced by many of you who have stepped up to get involved in very meaningful ways. From the Development Committee to the Dream Team to the Shabbat Dinner Circle to the Minyanaire’s Brunch, so many of you demonstrate with your deeds and your resources that HNT is a home you nurture like your own. We are stake holders - we need only to give of ourselves, each according to our individual abilities, for the greater good. To do this requires that all of us remember that to be a welcoming home, one that is as comfortable as it is inspiring, each of us must do our own individual part to insure that we are strong, secure and sustainable. This means that we must pay our annual commitment increase it if you can - contribute to the Annual Appeal if you can and bring your Service Schedule card with you to all services to help us with the enhanced security precautions that will be in place. And because we are stake holders— Please bring your Annual Appeal Pledge Card to services on Rosh Hashanah. We are opening the doors to our synagogue a bit wider for our community. We hope you will see this, as we do, as another way to join together in prayer with our families, friends and community in the spirit of communal harmony and responsibility. This year all programs and services are being held in our synagogue home — Herzl-Ner Tamid. As we usher in another year, may we at Herzl-Ner Tamid 8 be examples to our children and to the greater Jewish community. We contribute to our synagogue community because Herzl-Ner Tamid is our Jewish home - a warm, welcoming and inclusive sanctuary. We at Herzl-Ner Tamid are stakeholders, not ticket holders. In leaving this substantial gift, his memory will be perpetuated in projects that will become possible due to his foresight and commitment to Jewish life. on Mercer Island. He was a leader in the Seattle Holocaust Association and chaired the establishment of the local Holocaust Memorial, ever mindful of honoring the memory of those who did not survive. Though he felt the responsibility of educating the next generation about the horrors of the Shoah, he also instilled in his family a love of Judaism and the need to belong and commit to a Jewish home, in Israel and here. John became a longtime friend of Cantor Joseph Frankel z”l, for whom our school is named, after meeting during WWll. Their friendship lasted the rest of their lives. They shared a story all too recognizable of the times. Having watched as his father and brother were taken away on Kristalnacht, after which they perished on a transport to Auschwitz, John was eventually able to emigrate to England. There he was taken in by a Quaker family and learned to be a draftsman. He joined a corps of young men who rescued those trapped in bombed buildings and eventually proudly gained English citizenship. In 1947 he immigrated to the US and together with his new wife made a home in the Pacific Northwest. He was part of a small group who helped orchestrate the merger of Herzl with Ner Tamid and its move to the Eastside. His children reflect benchmarks of that very journey; Peter celebrated becoming Bar Mitzvah at Herzl in Seattle, Danny at Ner Tamid and eventually Judy (Benami) right here on Mercer Island. John had a long and successful career at what is now known as PACCAR, was active in Democratic politics, and was instrumental in the building of the beautiful pedestrian paths Judaica shop And it’s right here on this little island that John’s gift, which will help educate Jewish children, will be a testament to the spirit of the Jewish People, a model and an inspiration not only to his children and grandchildren (Joey, Ben, Josh and Jessie Friedmann and Tomer and Adi Benami), but to each of us. It is a reminder that we are individually and collectively responsible for the welfare of our community and of the Jewish People. the 2014 Swedish SummeRun & Walk September Sale: Save 20% on tallit clips L’Shana Tova. On average, 1,800 people per month need the Jewish Family Service Polack Food Bank. Instead of giving what you don’t use, why not give what you do use? The food you donate isn’t just going to sit on a shelf somewhere, it’s going to a real person! What do you like to eat? Help feed someone who’d like the same thing! Dean & Gwenn Polik and Valerie Polack are once again generously contributing a matching gift for every item we collect, so give big and they will too! Don’t forget, the food bank cares about expiration dates just like you do. Check the date before you donate! We also cannot accept previously opened items, glass jars or perishables. Donate in the marked cart/bins in the Upper & Lower Foyers Volunteers Needed!
