Chairman’s Challenge
I always judge a summer by the number of times I manage to
get the barbeque fired up, and this year the weather has been
so good that I have actually lost count of how many times we
have managed to eat “al fresco”! In fact at the classic vehicle
show in Corbridge, we were all struggling to find some shade,
and the ice cream man must have made a small fortune with
the queue stretching at least a dozen deep.
Of course the good weather has helped with the attendance at
events. As ever Newby Hall was well attended and I understand that other than a shower, at around 3pm, the Barbeque
at Dennis and Lucy’s went without a hitch.
This year the annual North of England Rally at Harewood
House and the Croft Nostalgia weekend coincided. With a
slight break with tradition, I chose to go to Croft, which was
very well attended, although somewhat windy and noisy with
cars whizzing around the track. As usual the joint Raby Castle
event with JDC Area 11 was a roaring success, and Peter Kitching won the prize for the best Car
of the Marque; we now look forward to the Moors tour and lunch. These events do not just happen by chance, so grateful thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of them.
By the time you are reading this our Section Weekend will just about be upon us, and to date
some twenty four members and friends have booked; have you? It may still not be too late.
I am very pleased to announce that Mark Ramsey, one of our newer members, has volunteered
and been accepted to join the committee. We wish him well and hope he enjoys his time on the
committee.
Some Important Dates for 2014:The Section AGM: 19 Jan 2014 at Allerton Court, Northallerton
The Annual Rally: 20-22 June at Rockingham Castle
Now to Auction News;
“‘Garage Find’ Rolls-Royce Collection, unique Alvis and rare Aston Martin head early consignments”:
A collection of thirteen Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars, many of which have lain dormant in a
small town garage for umpteen years, will be among the star attractions at H&H’s upcoming 16
October 2013, IWM Duxford, auction.
Vying for top billing are a Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Touring Saloon, (Estimate:
£20,000 - £30,000) which graced the 1933 Olympia Motor Show, and a 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver
Cloud II Saloon, (Estimate: £30,000 - £35,000), that has covered just 24,000 miles from new.
The former used to belong to marque authority Lawrence Dalton, while the latter was supplied
new to Osmond Rivers of ‘Empress Line’ fame.
The collection also contains a 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Special Saloon, (No Reserve), which
was first owned by the then chairman of Rolls-Royce, Arthur F. Sidgreaves OBE, not to mention
a 1935 Derby Bentley 3½ Litre Sports Saloon, (No Reserve) and a fabric-bodied 1928 RollsRoyce 20hp Saloon. (Estimate: £20,000 - £24,000).
The only Alvis 4.3 Litre to wear Abbey Drophead Coupe coachwork, ‘EXK 80’ was reputedly built
under the watchful eye of Lofty England. Falling between a Bentley 3½ Litre and Bugatti 4.9 Litre,
within the car’s ownership history of wealthy Oxford undergraduate Erwin Goldschmidt, the Alvis
4.3 Litre has changed hands several times since, but pleasingly retains its unique body
(Estimate: £130,000 - £150,000).
Reportedly the sole Aston Martin DB6 MKI to be factory finished in Bahama Yellow, ‘WUL 3G’
has been in the current ownership for thirty-six years. A desirable Vantage model that has
amassed various concours awards in the past, the four-seater was entrusted to Trinity Engineering for a variety of mechanical improvements during 2005. Said to be ‘on the button’, it boasts an
impressive history file (Estimate: £150,000 - £180,000).
Let me know if you manage to purchase any of the above.
Drive carefully.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
The Noggin and Natter evenings on the first Wednesday of each month are now
taking place at the Crown Inn, Kirklevington, just outside Yarm. Bar food is
available for those who want it. It is a very select gathering at present, so why not
come along and swell the numbers!
The third Wednesday evening meetings involve much lively talk and laughter at The
Old Mill, Metal Bridge, Coxhoe, DH6 5NX.
A hardcore of attendees is developing but new faces are always welcome. These
meetings are definitely not men only! Just turn up at about 7.30pm, there is no
need to book. Ask at the bar to find out where we are - they do know that we are
there!

Secretary's notes
It is almost eight weeks since I wrote my last
notes for this newsletter and I am trying to think
if I have had to put a coat on! Armani the dog,
being a Siberian Husky, has actually been found
sunbathing on a couple of occasions, but he
seems to be a little weary now as the nice
weather continues, and looks forward to a
snowy winter!
Of course, those of you with “cars of the
marque” will have had no excuse not to put
some extra mileage on the clock this summer.
The Classic Vehicle Show at Corbridge was one
such event where members from many different
clubs, or just enthusiasts who own a nice car,
were able to turn up and show them off. Dare I say it, but the weather that day
was a little too hot. I was lucky enough to be able to drive our Treasurer’s RollsRoyce Silver Cloud III from Sunderland, and it was unbelievable to think that it was
the last Rolls-Royce to be completed in 1962. It drove wonderfully and certainly
turned a few heads during our journey there and back, and also in the parade
ground. We had a good turnout of cars from the North Eastern Section, but it
reminded me just how many people derive such pleasure from their motor cars,
which come in all shapes and sizes.
The first Sunday in August saw the North of England rally at Harewood. It was
good to meet up with some of our newer members and under the watchful eye of
our Chief Marshall, Jim Clark, Nigel Bryant, Roger Hall, Colin Hutchinson, Martin
Vinson and I attempted to ensure that all the cars present were parked not only in
their proper place, but at the correct angle! This rally is the main club event in our
area, and it is this event that will hopefully supply some much needed funds into
our bank account. Thank you to all of you who attended and who supported our
section, and also to the above named gentlemen for marshalling and for giving up
their Sunday morning, which certainly meant an early start from the North East.
There are still a lot of events to take part in this year, and I hope to see as many of
you as possible between now and the end of the year. Please ensure that the date
of the Annual General Meeting is put in your diary. We will have to make a couple
of important decisions this year, and your involvement in these would be very
much appreciated.
Finally, together with our chairman, Derek, I am delighted to welcome Mark
Ramsey as a new member of the North Eastern Section committee. Mark is a
relatively new member of the Club, who has attended many events, and I am sure
he will be an asset to the way in which our section is run.
In the meantime, let the summer continue and drive carefully.
Peter
Welfare
I was unaware that Brian Snaith had suffered a slight stroke earlier in the year,
until very recently. Therefore, I was very pleased to see Brian, and his wife Ann,
at Corbridge. Brian is now behind the wheel again and is looking very well and it
was good to have a chat and catch up with them both.
7
Colin Hutchinson is still not 100% fit, but was carrying on his marshalling duties at
Harewood, so it was good to see him and his wife Gladys.
If there is any club member who has not been very well recently then please let me
know.
Peter
From the Editor
(whose opinions are his alone and do not reflect those of the committee or members of the North Eastern Section!)
Once again I am indebted to John Harrison as I have taken some of the reports
from the website.
A friend of mine sent me this photo of a Derby Bentley that is in need of a little tlc. I
understand that barn finds are now much sought after, and commanding good
money.
This one seems to be a good looking motor car, and, despite being a little unloved
at present, pretty much complete. I do not know whether the engine turns, or,
indeed what the present owner intends to do with it. Watch this space, as they say!
It was very unfortunate that the Croft Nostalgia weekend clashed with the North of
England Rally. In fact, there were several other events on over that first weekend in
August. I have, in the past, suggested that the North of England Rally should find a
different venue, as we have been going to Harewood House for well over thirty
years, and I have felt that it is time for a change. Numbers of entrants are down on
what they were a few years ago, and I wonder whether the venue could, at least
partly, be the reason for this. It was also very disappointing that the Club shop was
not present. It seemed a surprising decision to allow the staff, who would have
8
been needed to run it, to go on holiday, when the date was known so far in
advance. But then perhaps I do not know all the particulars.
I am indebted to Jim Clark for the photos on the front and back cover of this
newsletter, (idiot that I am, I left my camera at home!) and I am sure that there will
be a full write up in a future Bulletin. The Bentley on the back is a Mark VI Special,
and is a replica of the Wolf Barnatto Blue Train WO Bentley, and has a B80 straight
eight engine, fresh out of its box! Another special present was the replica below,
which started life as B85DK, a 1935 Park Ward, 4d4l Sports Saloon 3.5L Derby
Bentley. I believe that the engineers were Petersen, who seem to specialise in this
type of thing!
Here is another one they made earlier! Also a 1935 Derby Bentley 3.5L, this time
chassis no. B11CW.
9
Club chairman, Trevor Baldwin was there, and Roy Brooks was the man on the
mike, doing a great job, as usual, despite Roger Hall blowing a raspberry as he
drove out in his famous pink PII!
Neither Derek not Peter have said anything in their contributions to this newsletter,
but I can report that at the last committee meeting, Peter informed us that owing to
work commitments he would not be able to continue as section secretary. To say
that this news produced a stunned silence is an understatement. Peter has worked
very hard as section secretary, and taken the role very seriously. He has made a
point of speaking to every new member who has joined the club, since taking over
from me, something, which I confess I seldom did, and done his best to encourage
members to come to events and support the section. At the risk of being
repetitious, it is a fact that the section events provide the finance necessary to run
the section, and in particular to pay for the production and posting of this newsletter.
The income received from advertisements does not provide enough to cover this,
and without the support of the membership at these events, the finances would
slowly dwindle. Peter has worked tirelessly to promote the section to members,
new and old, and he deserves our gratitude. At the AGM we will need to appoint
his replacement. Bearing in mind that we won the prize for the best section of
2012, I would ask you all to consider, very seriously, whether you can give some
time to help with the running of the section, and take on the role of secretary.
Despite what I have just said, it is not an onerous job, but interestingly does allow
the incumbent to see more how the Club is run, and gives the opportunity to meet
members from other sections. If no-one is prepared to give a little of their time,
then the consequences could be significant. Please give this some thought. I will
say no more on this subject, of which I am sure you will all be glad!
***
And finally, I would also like to welcome Mark Ramsey to the section committee. I
am sure he will be an asset, and he has the advantage of a few months to find out
how we work before the AGM next January. (This, however, is indeed also the
opinion of the committee of the North Eastern Section)
Martin
Section AGM - Sunday 19 January 2014
Notice of the Section Annual General Meeting, which will take place at Allerton
Hotel, Northallerton at 11.00am on Sunday 19 January 2014 was given in the last
newsletter. In accordance with Club rules, nominations for members of the
committee, and proposals for discussion should be received by the section
secretary no later than Sunday 8 December 2013. There will, of course, be another
newsletter out between now and then, so there will be a chance for another
reminder. As Peter has mentioned, there will be one or two matters of importance
that will need discussion and a decision, so it would be good to have as large a turn
out as possible. The cost is going to be in the region of £25 per person, to include
coffee on arrival, sherry or soft drink after the meeting and a three course lunch.

Where we have been
MGOC Classic Vehicle Show, Corbridge
There were several members of the North East Section at the Corbridge show in
10
July. Unfortunately, I was not one of them owing to a previous holiday
commitment. I had asked the MGOC to provide hot and sunny weather, but I
understand from the remarks made by both Derek and Peter, that this was
overdone slightly. Still better than the wet and windy conditions we have endured
in the past.
Ten section members cars were booked in, two did not make it, and three extra
ones turned up. Please see the section website for a brief write up and many
photos.
The date for the next year’s show has been decided, and is listed in the diary of
events on page six as 6 July 2014. I am told by the organisers that this year about
£14,000 was raised for local charities, which is a record.

Austin Club. Again see our website for photos.

Ilton Barbeque - Saturday 27 July
There were two changes to the usual routine for Dennis and Lucy Wheatley’s
annual BBQ.
First it was on a Saturday because there was a car event in Ripon on Sunday, and
secondly it was warm and sunny! Well it was warm and sunny for the BBQ itself
but as people were finishing up their puddings the heavens opened. However, this
did not dampen the spirits of the RREC and Jaguar Drivers Club members who
attended; some of whom adjourned to the house to watch a film about Spitfires on
Dennis’s large projection screen. The more hardy BBQers stayed outside, but
under a slightly leaking gazebo to sort out the ills of the world and finish their wine,
coffee or other liquid refreshment.
Oh, this must be the new speeding deterrent!

Planned events for 2013
Visit to Elddis caravans and Sunday lunch 22 September
Delves Lane, Consett, Co Durham, DH8 7PE
Old Mill, Knitsley, Consett, Co. Durham, DH8 9EL
10.00a.m.
12.00 midday
Once a year the Elddis Caravan Centre (Siddle backwards - the name of the
owners) has an open day where there are guided tours around the works to see
how their caravans and motor homes are constructed. For anyone who has
caravans, and for those who would just like to see how these are put together it is a
fascinating short tour, as well as being able to see the new models in their range.
We will need to be there around 10.00 a.m. when they open for tours and then we
will be given a tour before heading off for our 12.00 Sunday lunch at the nearby Old
Mill restaurant at Knitsley. As the caravan centre is only down the road from the
restaurant, it was suggested that those members who wish to have a further look at
the caravans, and motor homes on display, as well as a look at any other events
they are putting on, might like to return there after lunch. We hope that this visit
appeals to you, and we hope to see many of our members old and new at this
autumn event.
Margaret Andrews
Visit to Beamish - 29 September
12
Please send your booking forms to Derek, if you would like to attend at this venue.
Doxford Hall - 6 October
Although at the top end of the section area, this drive and lunch is a Jaguar
Enthusiasts’ Club event and is being organised by our section member Edwin
Hargreaves. Please contact him if you would like further information; Tel: 01642
487572. There is also a booking form on our website.
Teesside Tour - Sunday 20 October
Another booking form is enclosed for this. We are sure that many of you will have
been to the museum before, but, nevertheless, we felt that it was of interest and
would bear another visit. We suggest we arrive at the museum at 11.00am and aim
to be at The Chequers by 1.00pm to 1.15pm for lunch at 1.30pm.
