Snow Make-Up Days
Due to our school cancellation from icy conditions on Monday, 1/12, Mill Creek Schools WILL be in
session this Monday, 1/19, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. If we continue to miss school due to inclement weather, we will make our days up in the following order: Mon. February 16th (President’s Day),
Fri. April 17th, Fri. May 15th, and on Fri. May 22nd. If severe weather strikes and additional days
are needed, (let’s hope not!) we will add days to the end of the 2nd week of Spring Break beginning
with Friday, April 3rd, working backwards.
Daddy/Daughter Dance
We’ve had a great response for our first ever Daddy/Daughter dance! Our PTO has extended the
deadline to sign up until next Tuesday, January 20th. If you have a little girl, be
sure to bring her to our cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. and show her how a gentleman
should treat such a beautiful girl! $10/pair & $2 for each additional daughter.
Girls may be escorted by their Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle, or any other special person
that fits this role. Our moms are providing sweet treats for snacks, our DJ will be
playing lots of fun songs, our photographer will snap precious photos, and our
book fair will be open for shopping! What more would your little girl love than
quality time with you? If you would like to help decorate our cafeteria or with
donations for this event, please contact a member of our PTO organization, or call
our front office and we would be happy to assist you!

A New Face in our Office!
If you’ve called us this week on the phone, there’s a good chance you heard a new
voice on the other end of the line! Please welcome our new secretary & bookkeeper,
Mrs. Lydia Smith! Lydia is professional, confidential, and known for showing
warmth and kindness to our little eagles. She graduated from Pensacola Christian
College with a degree in legal office administration and she has experience with
bookkeeping and as a receptionist. Being a mom of 5, we know she will be great
help in our clinic! Thanks for welcoming Lydia to our front office family!
Valentine’s Day is almost here!
Valentine’s Day is less than a month away! Just a reminder that our Valentine’s Day classroom parties will be held on Friday, February 13th at 2:45 p.m. If you are a room parent
chairperson, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher regarding ideas you would
like to implement very soon. Thank you, room parents, for working together to make sure
our students feel spoiled and loved on this special day!
Boom, Baby!
It’s BLUE Friday and while we’ll be supporting the Indianapolis Colts this weekend,
we’ll be switching colors to Pacers gold & yellow on February 6th! Mark your calendars for 3:00 p.m. & join us in the gymnasium with BOOMER, the Pacers mascot!
His team will be coming out to talk to us in a high energy convocation about the importance of reading! His team will also share strategies to help us with test preparation as many of us head into our IREAD & ISTEP+ tests during the month of March.
Parents, families, and younger siblings are welcome to join us for the show! It’s going
to be a good one! Boomer has promised to give us a big SLAM DUNK show, and we’re
almost ready to rock those tests!
Mark your calendars for Family Math & Science Night!
On Thursday, February 19th, one of our most popular events is back again! Flyers will go
home in backpacks soon, so be sure to RSVP for Family Math & Science Night early!
What’s on the list of inquisitive activities this year? Hmm...What is the scientific reasoning behind those tornado tubes? What is a polymer and what kind of crazy putty is Mr.
Smith making? Where could I find constellations besides inside this awesome Star Lab?
We’re also waiting to hear if our favorite Silly Safari’s team can join us, so stay tuned for
updates on this FANTASTIC night!
It’s Talent Show Time!
Flyers regarding our annual talent show are going home today! Does your child
have a special talent they would like to share? If so, fill out the permission slip
for your child to stay after school one of the days for try-outs and turn it in to
your child’s teacher. The show is scheduled for Friday, February 20th!
Thanks!
February 4th is Mill
Creek East Pacers night!
Thank you to all of you
who purchased discounted Pacers tickets and
benefited our school
fundraiser at the same
time!

Cops Corner by Brent Johnson
Please be cautious when driving in these dangerously cold conditions. I have
been on duty when officers were unable to reach a stranded motorist due to
snow drifting across the roadways. Our cars aren't "super cars" that can go
through anything...we get stuck just as easily!
I have seen firsthand how having some of these items in your car can help during extreme cold weather:
Congratulations to our
Mill Creek East Spell
Bowl team on their 2nd
place finish! We are SO
proud of you!
---a small shovel--If you get stranded and want to keep your car running, your
exhaust pipe should be free from snow...or you can dig your way out of the snow bank.
---blankets/gloves/hats--Your car does not generate as much heat when you're stuck and idling for
a few hours.
---chemical hand warmers--This is self-explanatory!
---road flares--These can be used to melt ice or snow near your tires...Of course, they can also be
used to signal for help!
We hope you had a
wonderful holiday with
your families!
---tow rope--Not everybody with a 4x4 vehicle carries them, and these can help if a passerby offers
assistance. It can also help a tow truck driver if they are unable to reach your vehicle with their cables and ropes.
---flashlight
---cash--Some tow companies charge a fee for using debit/credit cards. There is often a charge for
being pulled out of a snow bank. Paying a tip to a good Samaritan, if you choose to do so, is often
cheaper than a tow truck. Keep about $100.00 safely stored in your vehicle.
--gas--Keep at least half a tank of gas in your vehicle.
--plan ahead--It is better to drive slowly in harsh road conditions: Running late makes you anxious,
feeling anxious leads to poor decisions, poor decisions leads to bad situations!
--common sense--If you don't think you can make it through a snow covered road, take a detour. It
is faster and cheaper to take a detour than to get stranded!
There are approximately 6 tow companies the dispatch center uses on a regular basis; they can become overwhelmed during snow storms. I have seen situations where AAA's response time was 2-3
hours.
Be prepared to take care of yourself!
The PTO is proud to sponsor our annual,
Mill Creek East Talent / Variety Show, on Friday February 20th.
MCE Kids K-5th Grade – What’s your talent?
Are you a singer, dancer, comedian, or artist? Do you play an
instrument, do magic tricks, or quote poetry? Whatever your talent,
(or group talent), you could be selected to perform in this years show!
• Try-out dates are: Thursday January 22 and Tuesday January 27 - directly
after school, and students will be judged on talent, preparedness, and variety!
So start preparing for your act NOW!
• Art projects can be submitted to Mrs. Milender anytime between Thursday January 26 –
Friday February 6th . YOU DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND TRY OUTS IF YOU ARE ONLY
SUBMITTING AN ART PROJECT>
• Only ONE performance per student is allowed.
• If your talent includes lyrics, please keep it “Rated G”! No profanity, or references to
alcohol, drugs, sexual content, etc.
• Singers – Kids sing more than anything else in try-outs. Coming prepared is important.
Keep in mind you will need to sing with background music only – no pre-recorded artist may
sing with you. Check-out www.buykaraokedownloads.com or search for accompaniment
downloads on the internet.
• If you need props, mats, technical equipment, etc. please plan to provide them, or make
arrangements for them.
• We can only choose approximately 16-18 acts for our show, but please do not assume
your act is not good enough! We are looking not only for talent, but variety and the best
combination of total acts!
• If your act is selected, you will need to attend 3 after school practices to help us prepare
for the show! The dates are: 2/5, 2/10, & 2/11
•There will also be a dress rehearsal on 2/17 after school.
• Those with art entries will only need to attend the dress rehearsal.
