Sacrament of Marriage
A couple wishing to be married
in St. Patrick Parish must contact
the parish six months prior
to the intended wedding date.
At this moment the sun illuminates the verdant landscape in my yard. A delightful chorus of songbirds fills
the air. A plump grey squirrel with a mouthful of pine
needles scampers up the nearby Ponderosa Pine tree
where its nest is taking shape. My neighbors’ daffodils
have emerged. The buds on some ornamental trees are
burgeoning.
I know it’s midwinter, but it feels like springtime! Is
something in nature out of sync? These sights and sounds
remind me that Lent and Easter are on the horizon. Is that
possible? My Christmas poinsettia is still in bloom!
Catholic spirituality matters revolve around Easter. Yes,
revolve! In fact, Easter, a moveable liturgical feast, depends
for its date on the revolution of the earth around the sun.
We celebrate Easter annually on the first Sunday after the
first full moon of spring, this year, April 20th.
We determine the start of Lent by counting backwards 40 days from Holy Saturday (skipping Sundays,
which are not days of penance). Doing so takes us to
Ash Wednesday, which is next week, March 5th.
Are you aware that the ashes used for signing your
forehead are from the burnt palms of last year’s Palm
Sunday? Here at St. Patrick Parish all have been invited
to gather up old palms and bring them to church this
week to be used for this year’s ashes.
Receiving ashes has been a very popular devotion
among Catholics for as long as I can remember. In recent
years, even some non-Catholic Christians have started
observing Ash Wednesday! Lenten spirituality prepares us
for celebrating Easter. This preparation focuses on three
disciplines: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is these practices that help us overcome sinful habits and spiritual
weaknesses that draw us away from God. They help us battle temptations. It’s a good time now to think and to pray
about the specific Lenten practices that you want to adopt.
Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner!
Ruth Ann Pilney, T.O. Carm.

Eran gitanas, esas a
las que mi mamá y mis tías me iban a dar si
no me portaba bien.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
We wish to remind all parishioners that on Saturday, March 15th, our Council will be holding
our Annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance in Gurnell Hall after the 4:00 PM Mass. As you are
probably well aware of, our Brother Knights are selling tickets to the event after all Masses. Please
remember to purchase your tickets as soon as possible, so that the organizers will know how
much Corned Beef and Cabbage to order. Those of us who attended last year probably remember
that the meal was both plentiful and delicious. So put aside your Lenten observations and end of
winter malaise, and come have a traditional and wonderful Irish Feast with all the good things
that will make it a memorable evening with friends. This is a fund raiser for our Council; the net
proceeds will be used to further our charitable works here in our beautiful Placerville home area.
Tickets are only $15.00.
Those Brother Knights who are planning to complete their 4th Degree this April 4th should
be aware that the Mens’ Wearhouse has negotiated a special deal where you can purchase a new
tuxedo along with pleated shirt, bow tie, cummerbund, and shoes, for approximately $165.00!
The person to contact at the Citrus Heights store is Ross Miller. It takes about 4 to 6 weeks for your
order to be delivered; expedience is of the essence. Ross Miller can be reached at 916.722.3900.
The Golden Sierra Assembly will be meeting in Gurnell Hall at their regular 4th Thursday time of
6:30. All 4th Degree Sir Knights are encouraged to attend.
Lastly, we welcome three new 1st Degree Brother Knights; let us warmly welcome Brother Ace
Anaya, Brother Cruz Hernandez, and Brother Brad Scalise. WELCOME, BROTHER KNIGHTS!

CONCERT AT ST. PATRICK
The Vocation Committee at St. Patrick parish presents a family friendly musical event! Michael
James Mette will be sharing his music with our community on Saturday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. in
Gurnell Hall. Michael is a Catholic musician and speaker who travels the country sharing his
music and faith. His music is a modern reflection of his faith blending alternative rock with faith
based lyrics. Michael has been married to his wife Michelle for the past 14 years, and is the father
to Annie (10), Trinity (8), Charity (6), Cecilia (5), and Michael Jr. (3). This concert is funded by freewill donations but only 250 can attend due to the size of the hall. RSPVs are requested. Tickets will
be at Will-Call at the event.

LADIES SOCIETY
Now that February is on the way out, can Easter be far behind? Next Wednesday,
March 5 is Ash Wednesday. The time is now to start thinking of your Lenten fasts.
I know we are not supposed to give up our favorite treats, just be kinder and more
loving. But, every year, because I am a chocoholic along with Father Jong, I do
deprive myself of chocolate, the hardest thing in the world for which I must abstain.
This is truly a sacrifice!
During Lent, our ladies will be planning our spring Luncheon to be held on Saturday, May 17
here in Gurnell Hall. Barbara Goyette has graciously agreed to chair this fun filled event.
Any support you may wish to give her will be greatly appreciated. Please jot down this date and
plan to reserve your spot early, maybe even a table full of your favorite people. Also, again we
will have our Easter treats, our most popular Easter Bake Event and Easter baskets offered to
you after all the Masses on the weekend of Palm Sunday, April 12 & 13. I know this is the
weekend of the K of C monthly breakfast but Easter is on April 20, ergo no breakfast that day!
So stop by for breakfast and get your Easter treats on the way out! Our Easter Lilies enhance
our sanctuary each year. I mentioned all these wonderful events so they might brighten up your
spring this year. Such great times in which to look forward.
