ENGINES STARTING TO REV UP...
Successful Hockey Season Ends on High Note,
Now 2014 Racing Season Begins for the Brown Brothers
It was a long hockey season for Mitch Brown and the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs
of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. The 2013-2014 schedule included
2 pre-season exhibition games, a 49-game regular season and 31 playoff
matches including the seven game showdown series against arch-rivals St.
Catharines Falcons for the coveted Sutherland Cup.
But the 82 game grind was well worth the effort for Mitch and his teammates
who won 71 of those contests enroute to the Sutherland Cup Championship.
Now that the hockey season is over, the Brantford youngster is refocussing his
talents and intensity on his 2014 Sprint Car racing programs that will see him in
action in 40-plus events over the course of the season.
His main efforts will be on Ohsweken Speedway's Corr/Pak Packaging Sprint
Car schedule where he hopes to again be in the mix for the winged, openwheel division's championship. Only a late season engine problem in 2013
hampered his bid for the title but he still managed to finish a career high third
in the final standings. Additionally he plans to compete in events on the Patriot
Sprint Tour, Empire Super Sprints and with the Southern Ontario Sprints.
Mitch Brown racing’s programs will again see Haldex, Pro-Fit Health Club,
Leitch Performance Engines and Strodes BBQ & Deli returning as prominent
sponsors on his Sprint Car along with new sponsor Sit N' Bull Tires.
Although younger brother Jake Brown's hockey season
ended early for his Hagersville Hawks, the teenager has
had some time between his High School studies to work
on his Ohsweken Speedway Crate Engine Sprint Car.
His racing programs will see sponsorship support from
APC, Port Dover Auto Parts, Strodes Express and Brown Auto
Service.
Other sponsors of the team’s two car programs include
Bicknell Racing Products, Image Factor Motorsport Designs
and Photography, On Dirt Racing News, Total Oil Products
Eagles Nest Motorsports Park, Brochures etc., Hepner Racing
st
Products, Letter-Rip Race Graphics, 21 Century Signs, Brown
Auto Sales, Village Pizza & Wings and the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs.

Editor's Comments
Finally, after what has to viewed as the
worst winter in some forty years, the
racing season here in Southern Ontario is
finally getting underway.
And just like a few of the past seasons,
Mother Nature was a little reluctant to let
fans enjoy the openers by dumping excessive rain on many area
tracks forcing official to push the starters back a few days.
While most of the focus on Ohsweken Speedway's weekly shows
and specials will be on the 360 Sprint Cars, this year's addition of
a developmental Crate Engine Sprint Car class for aspiring
competitors appears to be gaining a lot of interest among openwheel race fans and certainly racers on a limited budget.
And at Ohsweken the other supporting divisions -Thunder Stocks,
Mini Stocks and Bombers - add to the overall entertainment.
In 2014 three marquee events highlight Ohsweken's schedule,
including the Northern Summer Nationals scheduled for a
Monday night again this year, with Corr/Pak Merchandising 360
Sprint Cars, Crate Sprint Cars, DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, and HRW
Automotive Mini Stocks all on the July 28 card.
The “Greatest Show on Dirt” returns to Ohsweken on Tuesday,
July 29 when the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car series will
contest the 8th Annual Six Nations Showdown, joined by the
Affordable Towing & Recovery Thunder Stocks, and Gale’s Auto
Aftermarket Bombers. The track will be closed on Friday, August
1, following the two special weeknight events.
WHAT A WAY TO START THE SEASON!
Mitch Brown Scores Road Win With SOS At Brighton Speedway
May 18, 2014 By Greg Calnan (Saturday, May 17th, 2014) – BRIGHTON, ON –
“Life is good right now”. Those were the words of race winner Mitch Brown at
Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. The Brantford, Ontario native started on
the pole of the 25 lap main event and picked up his first career Southern Ontario
Sprints win. The victory comes just two weeks after he helped lead the Pro Fit
Corvairs to the OHA GOJHL Jr. B Hockey Sutherland Cup.
Brown started on the pole and led the field to green for the first feature of the
2014 season. The red flag flew quickly though as Kyle Fraser flipped in the second
turn of lap 1. The start of the race took three tries before the drivers settled down
and began to log laps.
Brown led every lap of the affair, however lapped traffic would make life difficult
for the lead group. Rick Wilson started third and gave chase throughout the race,
but was never able to catch the #10B.
A caution on lap 19 for a spin by rookie driver Cory Turner set up a six lap shootout
for the win. Brown got a good jump on the restart and distanced himself from
Wilson in the closing laps and cruised to the win.
“I have a group of guys here that were a big part of the win” said Brown as he
pointed to his crew. The win was the fourth in a sprint car and first away from
Ohsweken Speedway.
Runner-up Rick Wilson was pleased with his second place finish. “I don’t think we
had anything for him. Our cars were about as even as they could be” said the
Joyceville, Ontario driver.
Justin Martin drove to an impressive third place finish in his first race back to
Brighton since clinching the SOS title there in 2009. Charlie Sandercock and Glenn
Styres completed the top five.
The 10th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals
weekend will include the Sprint Cars and their
Ohsweken Shootout during the Night Before the
Nationals on Friday, September 12, plus the
HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, while Saturday,
September 13 will feature the $12,000-to-win
CSCN Sprint Car event, plus Affordable Towing &
Recovery Thunder Stocks.
GREAT START FOR MITCH BROWN
As highlighted in the accompanying column,
Mitch Brown got off to a fast start to his 2014
season by winning his first ever SOS race at
Brighton Speedway on May 17.

CALEDONIA PRO-FIT CORVAIRS 2014 OHA SUTHERLAND CUP CHAMPS
Date: May 03, 2014 By Scott Dietrich - GOJHL.ca Contributing Writer
Eight months of hockey and five playoff series later the Caledonia
Pro-Fit Corvairs are the OHA Sutherland Cup Junior B Champions for
2014. In front of a boisterous and packed home crowd (team record
1,674), the Corvairs willed their way to a 3-1 victory, thanks to some
late game heroics by team captain Matt Quilty.
The Falcons drew first blood in the second period as Aaron Taylor
stole the puck in the neutral zone and sped in on Corvairs goaltender
Colin Furlong. Jonathan Abraham followed closely behind and
hooked Taylor, for which the referee awarded a penalty shot. Taylor
capitalized and tucked a wrist shot under the bar for a 1-0 Falcons lead.
Just three minutes later, the Falcons took a penalty when Brennan
Feasey tripped Josh Mallott to give the Corvairs a two minute
powerplay. The Corvairs converted on a brilliant tic tac toe play that
went from Quilty at the point to Jordan Peacock who quickly passed
it through the crease to Jake Brown who had to do nothing more
than tap the puck to tie the game.
It’s been a great year for us and we’re
happy to take home two trophies this
year,” Head Coach Mike Bullard said.
Bullard was also in awe of the fan support
shown in the building. “This is so great for
Caledonia Hockey,” he said.
Bullard also added that his team may be the best that has ever been
so far in the short history of the GOJHL.
“It think this is probably the best Junior B hockey team ever,” an
ecstatic Bullard said. “They’ve worked so hard and they deserve
everything, what a fantastic feeling.”
St. Catharines Falcons head coach Frank Girhiny was extremely
proud of his guys, saying: “they just gave everything and left
everything out on the ice.” About the game itself, Girhiny said, “At
the end of the day it’s two real good hockey teams. Not a lot of
difference in the teams but at the end of the day they got the last
goal and a well-deserved win.”.”
It seemed fitting that this series
would be decided by the last twenty
minutes of game seven. After all this
series has had so many back and
forth lead changes, both in the
games and the series itself.
In the third period, Caledonia fans
rejoiced when they saw a couple of
Corvairs crash the net and the puck
go in but unfortunately the puck
went in only after the net was
knocked off its pegs. Two minutes
later the Corvairs faithful could
celebrate for real as Jordan Peacock
working behind the net passed the
puck out to a wide open Matt Quilty
who buried his chance giving the
Corvairs a slim lead with just over six
minutes to play.
Girhiny added, “This was being
followed on Cogeco, on YouTube and
we’re getting texts and emails from
people all over Canada, not just
Ontario, saying it’s some of the best
hockey they’ve seen all year, and so
we’re proud to be a part of that.”
(Left to Right) Team leaders Connor Murphy, Matt Quilty. Mitch
Brown and Justin Abraham accept the Sutherland Cup from
league officials while other team members wait in the
background for their chance to hoist the trophy.
Then as the final minute was closing down the Falcons pulled Knick
Dawe from the net to try and send the game to overtime. But the
Corvairs had other plans. With just over sixty seconds to go Cosimo
Fontana threw the puck at the empty net from the neutral zone and
scored the empty netter. That would prove to be the nail in the coffin
for the Falcons, as the faithful fans of the Corvairs counted down the
seconds until their team would be crowned Sutherland Cup champions
with a 3-1 win over a heart broken St. Catharines Falcons team.
As soon as the buzzer went off friends and family of teammates
along with fans stormed out onto the ice to share in the triumph of
the team that worked so hard in the regular season and collected
their second trophy on the season.
The Corvairs said the experience was unbelievable and is something
they will hold onto for the rest of their lives.
“It’s unbelievable, best feeling ever,” Captain Matt Quilty said. “I’ve
waited four long years for this and it finally happened, incredible.”
“You can’t describe it,” Connor Murphy said. “We have worked hard
for this all year and we knew we had a special group here and we did
it, it’s awesome.”
The ending of the game had a sort of
fairy tale quality to it. Quilty who had
been injured during the Golden
Horseshoe Conference final and was
doubtful to play in any game this
series. The doctors cleared him to play
in game six and seven, where in game
seven he scored the game winning
goal. Even Shakespeare couldn’t have
written a more fitting ending for the
Junior B career of the Corvairs captain.
“It means everything (to play tonight),” Quilty said. “I was pretty
much unable to move for three weeks, I had to stay in bed and it just
killed me to be away from the boys. When the doc gave me the ok to
play, I couldn’t have been more excited.”
“He’s been the best leader we could have asked for and him getting
to play tonight is just awesome,” said Murphy.
“We’re all glad he was able to play last night and,” Colin Furlong said.
“We won this one for him that’s for sure.”
Congratulations to the Champion Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs on an
amazing season, starting with a 24 game winning streak at the start
of the season to capping it off in fine fashion with the OHA
Championship. The Corvairs were pushed right to the bitter end by
the St. Catharines Falcons, congratulations to the Falcons to a great
season that came up just short of their goals.
Special thanks to all of the fans across the league who supported
their teams and came out to watch exciting Junior B hockey all year
long. We'd also like to thank all of the volunteers, coaches,
executives and officials from across the Province who help make all
of this possible.
Chuck Hebing Wallops Patriot Sprint Tour Field at Woodhull
Rich Vleck, WOODHULL, NY, (May 10, 2014)In the last three Patriot Sprint Tour events at Woodhull, Chuck Hebing
had become almost human as he finished in the top five each time but
never ended up in Victory Lane. On Saturday Night though he returned
to a class of his own and kicked off the 2014 season on the right foot.
Hebing, of Ontario, NY, scored his 38th career Patriot Sprint Tour A-Main
win, his sixth at the Woodhull Raceway. “The Cobra” has always been
the pied piper at the 1/3-mile high-banked oval, but he has not looked
as dominant as he did on Saturday in years.
“We had a really good car tonight,” admitted Hebing in Victory Lane
after leading all 25 laps. “The crew has put a lot of hours in to the car
and it was just great tonight.”
Hebing was the last car to arrive on Saturday Evening, after spending the
morning in Northern New York watching his daughter Kelly graduate
from college. Because of his tardiness, Cobra missed out on the hot lap
session; it did not seem to faze him much though as he went out and
blew away the field in heat race three.
After redrawing the outside pole position, Hebing jumped in to the early
race lead in the feature before a pair of quick cautions. On the second
restart, Shawn Donath, who also won his heat race, made a bid for the
lead, as he attempted to slide in front of Hebing in turns one and two.
Donath would make contact with the No. 45, which allowed Hebing to
get back in front. On all ensuing restarts, Hebing would hug the bottom
line and found greater success.
The race hit a long green-flag stretch through the mid-section of the
race, and during that time, Hebing was able to lap up to 9th place before
a lap 18 caution flag. Under a new PST rule though, the lapped cars
were removed, which allowed the battle for the win to continue their
battle.
Donath, along with hard-charging Robbie Stillwaggon would make their
bids for the lead during late-race restarts, but for both, their attempt
would drop them back in to the grasps of their pursuants.
As Hebing was driving to his fifth Woodhull Win in the month of May,
things got hairy behind him as Shawn Donath and Jamie Bodo came
together while battling for third, and spun, collecting Steve Collins in the
process.
Stillwaggon would hold on for a runner-up finish in his first visit to
Woodhull. After the incident in turn four, driving up to finish third was
heat winner George Suprick. The podium finish was the icing on the
cake of an emotional night for Suprick, who was behind the wheel of his
No. 87 for the first time since his heart attack nearly a year ago.
Tracy Potter, who also had not been in competition for much of 2013
also scored a strong finish, driving up to finish fourth. Brad Knab had a
steady race to round out the top five.
Donath, Bodo and Collins place sixth to eighth, respectively, after their
final lap accident would make them the first cars one lap down.
Defending PST America Champion Jared Zimbardi spun on the initial
start and went a lap down early but was able to drive back up to finish
ninth while youngster Parker Evans put together a solid performance to
round out the top 10.
Reigning series Rookie of the Year Scott Just had a career-best run going,
as he was battling for a top spot with two laps remaining when a chainreaction incident broke his front axle and ended his night prematurely.
Rookie Dane Lorenc did not start his sprint career as he hoped as he
spun in the B-Main and tipped his No. 00 after contact from Dave
Wickham. They were unable to qualify, as was the case for 2012 PST
America Champion Scott Kreutter, who was unable to locate a
mechanical issue on the Warner No. 10b after the car quit while he was
leading in heat race one.
A total of 27 sprint cars filled the pits for the first series race of the
season. Included in the field was Canadian Stan Zanchin, as well as Kelly
Hebing, who ran her first PST event and ran her first race since a hard
crash last season.
