T O U R I S M K A L U G A I B R A N D S N F O R K A L №U5 G 2014 O F M A T I O Investments A R E G I O N Innovations Infrastructure N A G E N C Y ISSUE HIGHLIGHT: TOURISM BRANDS OF THE YEAR KALUGA RECOGNIZED AS THE CAPITaL OF EVENT TOURISM (results of the national competition Russian Open Event Expo-2014) “A mecca for investors”, “an economic oasis” – these are generally the definitions used today to describe Kaluga Region. They are well-deserved. Kaluga Region is in fact one of the most economically developed regions, where major global corporations operate their facilities, and where dedicated clusters that are the most relevant for Russia today are actively formed… “The cradle of space science”, “little Petersburg”, “the motherland of Russian tsarinas” is also about Kaluga Region. Located in the very heart of Russia, Kaluga land has imbibed a considerable number of Russian and international definitive historical events, images, names… Natural integration of the past and the present, a special role in culture, traditions dating back many centuries, unique nature, a well-developed infrastructure and major industrial brands make Kaluga Region an exceptional area for development of tourism. The regional government has identified integrated development of the tourism segment as a key direction for the near future. T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N WELCOME TO KALUGA REGION! “Attractiveness for tourists is measured not so much by the number of landmarks, as by the atmosphere created by the region’s residents. In Kaluga Region, we are always happy to see guests and the atmosphere of hospitality and benevolence, of love and pride for the region prevails here. Come and see for yourself!” – Pavel Konovalov, Deputy Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of Kaluga Region, Head of the Administration of Tourism Development. — In five recent years, the regional government has been paying considerable attention to integrated development of the tourism sector. What changes have been made, how competitive is Kaluga on the Russian and international tourism market? — Changes have been quite significant, and they were associated, primarily, with the adoption of federal and regional support programs for internal and inbound tourism. The principal indicator is the increasing inflow of tourists. In the last 5 years, it increased by more than 2.5 times, exceeding the one million mark in 2013. The volume of services in the tourism segment has grown twice. The starting point for positive changes was the adoption in 2009 of the Development Strategy of Kaluga Region until 2030, in which tourism was identified as the source of additional potential for Kaluga Region as a “new development region”. This is very important, because tourism not only brings income from landmark visits, but also creates a multiplicative effect by stimulating hotel and restaurant businesses, construction of roads and sports facilities, manufacturing of tourist gear, etc. By applying a system approach to development of the industry, we identified the forms of tourism (traditional and new ones) that can be successfully developed in Kaluga Region. We defined key directions and prepared lists of specific activities for their support. These were formalized in a number of program documents, including the Program of Internal and Inbound Tourism Development until 2016. The first to receive significant support – in the form of partial compensation of costs – were agro- or rural tourism facilities. From 2011, one in four agrotourism sites has received subsidies. On average, 1 ruble of subsidies was matched by 4.5 rubles of investments. In the nearest future, we expect to see socio-economic and budget effect adequate to the above figures. As a result of these measures, the number of entrepreneurs involved in agrotourism continues to increase every year. In the beginning of 2014 there were already 147 registered entities. In comparison with 2013, growth in the segment was 123%. The currently operating 550 guesthouses can simultaneously provide comfortable accommodation for more than TOURISM NOT ONLY BRINGS INCOME FROM LANDMARK VISITS, BUT ALSO STIMULATES HOTEL AND RESTAURANT BUSINESSES, CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS AND SPORTS FACILITIES, MANUFACTURING OF TOURIST GEAR. 3 T O U R I S M 62,000 tourists. These are considerable numbers, even by federal standards. The international forum Rural Tourism in Russia awarded our region its gold medal and a diploma for development of agrotourism. Kaluga Region is in the top 3, together with Irkutsk Region and Altai Territory. Further development of this direction will be associated with improvement of the quality of services and active promotion of agro estates. A specialized association is needed – on the one hand, to stimulate more initiative from owners of rural guesthouses themselves, and on the other, to consolidate efforts, including those of governmental structures, for resolution of mutual problems. Considerable progress was achieved in development of event tourism. The popularity of festivals held at Etnomir – Wild Mint, Vegfest, Ethno Rainbow, Tipifest and others – has extended far beyond the region and even the country. Nikola-Lenivets art park also attracts quite a lot of guests to its annual festivals (Archstoyaniye, Landscape Workshops, New Media Night, Beaubourg, Insomnia), as does Vysokiye Berega center for culture and tourism that holds the Orientalia festival. The international motorcycle rock festival MotoMaloyaroslavets is no less interesting to the public as well. The Richter classical music festival, Pushkin and Tsvetayeva readings, massive Maslenitsa festivities – all have their loyal audiences… The World of Guitar music festival, that has a 16-year history, has become a major guitar forum not only in Russia, but in Europe as well. Another direction is reconstruction of historically significant battles of the 1812 4 B R A N D S O F K A L U G A Patriotic War near Maloyaroslavets, the Great Patriotic War at the “nameless hill” near Baryatino, the great stand on the Ugra river, etc. Last year was one of grand celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Romanov Imperial House. Meshchovsk, also celebrating its 775th anniversary, was the center of festivities. The ancient city is the motherland of two Russian tsarinas that made great contributions to the history of the country and its national identity – Evdokia Lukyanovna Romanova (Streshneva) and Evdokia Fedorovna Romanova (Lopukhina). Significant changes occurred in social R E G I O N tourism – primarily, tourism and local studies for children and young people. Every year, the region organizes study and training camps for future leaders of 1st category sports tourism camping/trekking trips, as well as the regional competition for the best sports camping/trekking trip for children and youths. These year’s plans include Kaluga schoolchildren’s visits to St. Petersburg, Kazan, Tula, Moscow, and the Crimea. For people with limited ability, financially disadvantaged and senior residents, the regional ministry organizes regular guided tours on a variety of subjects. Generally, in order to assess the competitiveness of Kaluga in the tourism sphere, we should consider the following facts: • at the annual international Leaders of the Tourism Industry 2013 awards, Kaluga Region was awarded the Golden Crown badge of merit for “Active Promotion of a Region”; • Kaluga Region was one of the finalists of My Planet national awards in the “Best Region for Travel” category; • at the Rural Tourism in Russia forum, the region was awarded a gold medal and diploma for development of agrotourism; • at the Visit Russia tourism forum in Yaroslavl, Kaluga Region was commended by the President’s representative in the Central Federal District for development of ethnographic tourism. T O U R I S M — The tourism industry is a source of tremendous income. How do you estimate the economic status of the industry and its development trajectory in the region? — From the economical point of view, tourism provides a longer return than other segments. Considering the advanced growth rates in regional industrial manufacturing, we are unlikely to ever gain on them, and this is not something we aim for. In GRP, even considering its multiplicative effect, the segment can gain no more than 1.5%. I am sure that success in the tourism industry can be achieved by using the well tested cluster approach. We know for sure from practice that we won’t have to wait long for qualitative improvements. Our first investment project in the industry – the creation of the Nikola-Lenivets tourism and recreation cluster – was included in the federal program of the Russian Ministry of Tourism. This is the first time that Kaluga’s tourism industry is getting financing from the federal budget. With overall private investments at RUR 1.2 billion, the amount of this financing is RUR 240 million. Speaking about successful investment projects forming the region’s tourist image, we should not forget Etnomir. It has been developing from 2008, and is today a unique cultural and educational center. In the run-up to Kaluga’s 650th anniversary, we are developing a concept for a cultural and entertainment center on the banks of the Oka and the Yachenskoye Reservoir. It is expected to become one of the region’s biggest tourist complexes. It’s encouraging to see the number of businessmen willing to invest in tourism B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N THE MAIN EVENT OF 2013 WAS THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROMANOV IMPERIAL HOUSE. MESHCHOVSK, ALSO CELEBRATING ITS 775TH ANNIVERSARY, WAS THE CENTER OF FESTIVITIES. industry grow every year. The largest investors so far are the international charity foundation Dialogue of Cultures – United World (Etnomir) and the Svyaznoy group (Nikola-Lenivets). Our strategic plans include promotion of priority directions: cultural and educational tourism, including events, agrotourism, ecotourism, school tourism, local studies, etc. In traditional cultural and educational tourism, we will be implementing major projects by applying the cluster approach; we will be working with the Russian Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism in the format defined by the federal special-purpose program “Development of Internal and Inbound Tourism in Russia in 2011-2018” and a wide range of other program documents of federal and regional significance. These seemingly dry official words reflect a simple idea – we must make sure that the conditions for relaxation of our guests and local residents are comfortable as possible. — What do you think are the key competitive advantages for tourism in Kaluga Region? — Together with our colleagues in the tourism industry, including key tourism operators and hotel businesses, we conducted a market research to analyze potential tour- ist interest in Kaluga Region. We surveyed the region’s residents and heads of various governmental structures. After systemizing collected data, we identified a range of the region’s tourism advantages: • accessibility by transport for all groups of tourists; • rich historical, cultural and spiritual heritage; • unique natural landscapes – Ugra national park, Kaluzhskiye Zaseki reserve, estate parks, natural monuments of federal and regional significance; • the region’s positive investment image, growth of business activity, which is important for attracting investments in tourism; • participation of Kaluga Region’s government in development of priority directions of tourism though state and private partnership mechanisms. Unfortunately, the region’s tourism potential is not being exploited to 100%. The reason is trite – there are not enough hotels, guest houses and private motels. Tourists, especially during the Christmas holiday season, book out virtually the entire inventory. Demand exceeds supply. This, however, is a good incentive for global modernization of the hospitality infrastructure. 5 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N “The rapid development of the Cloth Factory, a unique facility in the area closely associated with the name of Pushkin, was made possible by private investments. 100 million rubles were used to restore the estate and give it a second life. State and private partnership efforts are now directed at the construction of Goncharov Hotel and supporting infrastructure and the restoration of the Goncharov family chapel. In the nearest future, the first and only private paper museum in the country will be opened here. The estate museum has preserved rare interior design elements, household items and furniture from Pushkin’s era, so tourists visit quite often”. So this year will be one of active construction. By 2015, Nikola-Lenivets will have a proper hotel, guest houses and catering facilities. At least 300 jobs will be created”. There’s enough room for everyone. Moreover, our experts actually live on the center’s territory. Etnomir has become an attraction for surrounding cities and the greater Moscow area: we’ve created competitive jobs for locals, and we’ve given a considerable boost to incomes of cab drivers, especially at times of events and festivals”. Tatiana Kolesnikova, Head of the Etnomir Cultural and Educational Center Representative Office in Kaluga “Ten years ago, inspired by the idea of organizing a natural habitat, we acquired 120 hectares of vacant land in Maloyaroslavets District. Far away from suffocating metropolises, this place has become home for artists, writers, scientists, musician… Today, the eco settlement has an official status. Our ecological seminars and various events attract participants not just from Russia, but from Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic. There’s no problem with accommodation – we’ve got separate rooms for guests in our houses”. Etnomir is the venue for dedicated cultural festivals, ethno camps, traditional festivities of different nations and entertainment events of regional, federal and international scale. 11 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N A PROJECT THAT Ruslan Bayramov, Head of Etnomir Cultural and Educational Center “I am a child of two cultures – Russian, like my mother, and Azerbaijani, like my father. Ever since I was a child, I could watch their dialogue – the differences and similarities in their values. I have always dreamed of bringing people together. This is exactly what we all need right now”. He was born in Gedabay District of Azerbaijan, in the village of Novo-Ivanovka that was founded by his maternal ancestor, old believer Grigory Nikivorovich Ivanov. At 11, he knew the names of almost all countries and their capitals. After military service, he was accepted to the Department of Law of the Moscow State University. Simultaneously, he studied philosophy and global religions and ran a business. Internal strength, faith in people, confidence in success, high business ethics – are just a few of the criteria that allow Ruslan to successfully implement business and social projects, like the Tramplin shopping center, the Sophia Charity Fund, the Dialogue of Cultures – United World international charity fund. The Etnomir project (ethnographic park of the world’s cultures) was created by Bairamov after a visit to the Issyk Kul. He defines its main purpose as to “remember one’s roots and discover other cultures”. — How did you come up with the idea for Etnomir? — The project was conceived a few years ago. In one way or another, we were always involved in projects associated with cultural dialogues, international friendship or social issues. The idea assumed the form of Etnomir on the banks of the Issyk Kul, where I went to visit a friend and where I had my first sleepover in a yurt. After that I decided to bring a yurt to Moscow. The people’s reaction was very positive, and we realized that we fumbled upon the right concept – of the need to remember one’s roots and discover other cultures. Of course, it is very difficult to promote an idea for the sake of the idea itself, and we’re practical people, so we decided to act. At that time, however, the market was booming, and no one wanted to get involved in a project that did not promise a fast return. Still, we did find a site near Borovsk, bought the land, set up our yurts and presented our concept to 12 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER Think of it as a mission. Love your product. This is the hospitality industry: if you are open to people, there will surely come. You will definitely make enough to sustain yourself, but won’t become a billionaire. — What would you single out as the tourist brand of Kaluga Region? — There are many of them. There are spiritual ones: Optina Pustyn, for example. There is space and everything associated with it. I am certain Kaluga could become an international tourist center. It has already gained a global reputation as an industrial center, but tourism is only beginning to develop. Kaluga Region’s spiritual, cultural and tourist potential is currently tens of times greater than what is being offered. Kaluga Region’s administration. Fortunately, they were very supportive. I must say that Kaluga is now a center of innovations and also has a great team in its administration… — What is the status of tourism in Kaluga Region? What is restraining its development? Or, are all necessary conditions present? — In recent years not only the region, but the country as well “turned” towards internal tourism. I think, Kaluga Region could set a trend for the entire country. After successes in industry, the region is now also beginning to focus on agro-, eco— and event tourism. There are no legislative problems; the main factor is people – we need people, whose dream is to work in tourism. — What, do you think, could help increase the inflow of tourists? — Awareness. Aggressive, in the good sense of the word, promotion of Kaluga Region could deliver an explosive effect for the years to come. — What determines the success of a project? — Personality. A person, who is consumed by the project, who wants to develop it in spite of everything. The rest will come. You need to give all you’ve got to your work on a daily basis, and then this “fanaticism” will provoke a positive response. — How rewarding is tourism as a business? — You can’t think of tourism as business. 13 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N TOURISM AND RECREATION CLUSTER Creation of a tourism and recreation cluster is identified as one of the key directions for development of Kaluga Region until 2030. The tremendous tourism potential and considerable experience in implementation of cluster initiatives form a strong foundation for development of the industry. Even today, Kaluga Region offers products that are competitive on the internal and external markets, actively promoting and supporting unique tourist projects. MOSCOW “In order to attract more tourists, we need develop the hospitality industry in an active and integrated manner, to offer our guests new high-quality services, while preserving the region’s natural, cultural and historical potential”. In 2013, the project was included in the federal special purpose program for tourism development, which assumes that it will receive financial support from the government. The modern history of Nikola-Lenivets Art Park began with the eponymous village that became famous in the early 2000s due to artist Nikolai Polissky. He was the initiator of a unique project featuring landscape installations and land art objects, many of which have since become symbols of modern art. Fanciful objects made from natural materials harmonically fit into the 14 КИЕВ picturesque landscapes of Ugora. Nikola-Lenivets is associated with the names of famous architects – Brodsky, Grigorian, Bernaskoni. Every year, the art park becomes the venue for the iconic ArchStoyaniye landscape architecture festival, which promotes the idea of integrating architecture into landscapes through creative workshops. Participants create grand-scale objects of art and architecture. In recent years, Nikola-Lenivets considerably expanded its entertainment program, becoming a true proving ground for modern art. At its opening in 2005, the core of the park’s exposition consisted, primarily, of local birds and just a few exotic ones. The park is continuously growing. Today, visitors can see 2000 birds from all over the world: penguins and peacocks are equally comfortable on Kaluga land. Feathered residents neighbor a small zoo with rare and amusing animals. An impressive park of stones is also worth a visit. The diversity and fullness of its collection raised Vorobyi from the level of a place for family entertainment to that of a serious educational and research facility. Its excursion programs are highly valued by schools, and its experience in bird breeding earned it well-deserved recognition among specialists working in Russian and foreign nurseries and zoos. The park is gradually improving its infrastructure: the landscape garden is growing, and the range of entertainment options is expanding and currently includes hikes along the eco trail, topical master classes, horseback riding, fishing and a shop of novelty souvenirs… Guests are always welcome at the cozy Pelikan café overlooking the river and the comfortable Ivolga hotel. 15 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N HISTORICAL ROUTES KALUGA Kaluga is the administrative center of Kaluga Region and one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in central Russia. Kaluga’s history covers more than six centuries, each reflected in the architecture and sculptures on the city’s streets and squares. Given the will, Kaluga could well obtain the status of a museum city, supported by the vast diversity of its attractions. “THE CRADLE OF SPACE SCIENCE” Kaluga has firmly secured the status of a space center. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, a founder of the theory of space exploration, used to live and work there. Kaluga has the county’s first museum of the history of cosmonautics. Today, it has one of the world’s biggest collections of space related artifacts. Scientist and rocket engineer Sergei Korolev and first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin were directly involved in the creation of the museum. In April 2014, an official ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the museum’s second block. According to the design plan, the new building will have the same architectural style, and will be four times larger than the existing one. Apart from a modern depository, the new block will have an astrodome, an exposition hall, a center of cosmic modeling and interactive areas – a 4D cinema, a conference hall, a space buffet and a hall of cosmic exercise machines. The federal budget allocated RUR 1.6 billion for the project. The launch of the museum’s second block is scheduled for the end of 2016. The SHOPPING ARCADE (GOSTINY DVOR) has been brightening up the Stary Torg square for several centuries and is considered one of the symbols of Kaluga. Construction of the architectural complex in early baroque style with gothic elements began in 1784 and was completed only 40 years later. When the regular city development plan was prepared, a decision was made to demolish part of the chaotically distributed trading booths from the city’s main trading square and in their stead to open a single stone shopping center with 14 blocks and symmetrical shops. The shopping arcade occupies an entire block. In keeping with 16 the ancient tradition, small stores are located here. The shopping arcade underwent several reconstructions. One of the biggest was started in 2010. Architects, restorers and builders were given the task to restore the arcade in its original design and to adapt it to modern needs. In 2012, the first stage of works was completed. Full reconstruction of the XVIII architectural and historical monument will be completed in 2015. T O U R I S M B R A N D S CHURCHES OF KALUGA The city is decorated by the domes of 27 churches, some of which were built as far back as the XV century. The construction of the Saint Trinity Cathedral in 1818 caused quite a stir in the society: the dome of the Kazan Cathedral that was being built at the same time in St. Petersburg turned out to be two meters smaller in diameter. Now Kaluga is the only city in Russia with its main cathedral topped by a huge dome without any internal supports. TIKHONOVA PUSTYN O F K A L U G A R E G I O N STONE BRIDGE over the Berezuyski ravine. The bridge has been one of Kaluga’s main landmarks since 1780, and it is the only viaduct in Russia. The stone bridge is the symbol of the new town. It has been serving the people of Kaluga for over 200 years. The bridge was recently reconstructed, while works on improvement of the Berezuysk ravine are currently in progress. THE CITY’S MERCHANT HISTORY enjoys well-deserved popularity among tourists. Kaluga is the home of many dynasties that affected the development of the entire Russia. Among them, the Faleyev, Bilibin, Zolotarev and Torubayev families. Former merchant estates house two of Kaluga’s major museums – the local history museum and the art museum. Dzerzhinsk District, Leo Tolstoy settlement The monastery was founded in the XV century by reverend Tikhon. A monk, he found hermitage on the bank of the Vepreika, choosing a cave of a huge oak tree as his dwelling. He fared on wild grass and fruits, got water from a well that he had built with his own hands. It is unknown, when exactly Tikhon founded the monastery, but it is believed that he was the one who built the temple of the Holy Mother, where he was later buried. The currently functioning monastery houses a spiritual history museum. The sacred spring, from which Tikhon got water, is especially revered by pilgrims. The monastery possesses a silver reliquary with hallows of saint Tikhon of Kaluga. 17 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A MALOYAROSLAVETS is a town R E G I O N The marks of battle are still visible on the walls of the convent – chips from bullets and shells. of military glory. Its proximity to Moscow and location on the crossing of important roads made it a strategic object during numerous wars devastating the territory of Russia. The battle at Maloyaroslavets defined the fate of the 1812 Patriotic War. According to M.I. Kutuzov, the town was the “boundary for the attack and the beginning of the enemy’s retreat and demise”. The Chernoostrovsky convent of St. Nicolas preserves the marks of the battle that unfolded under its walls to this day. The convent’s blue gates are the best evidence: chips from bullets and shells are clearly visible in the stone setting. Each fall, the walls of the convent relive the legendary battle with Napoleon through reconstructions, which attract huge numbers of tourists. Among the town’s many attractions are the 1812 museum and the Battle of Maloyaroslavets diorama. LYUDINOVO is the land of lakes. It earned this title as the location of the region’s deepest lake – the Lompad, a unique place for water sports. Lake Lompad has long been a favorite among aquatic sport professionals and amateurs. It is also the place for annual all-Russian motor and sailboat competitions. Historically, Lyudinovo is the region’s industrial center. The country’s biggest diesel locomotive plant, component plant and iron foundry are located here. The key event in the town’s recent history occurred at the end of 2012, when the RF Government adopted a resolution on the creation of the Lyudinovo special industrial manufacturing economic zone. 18 T O U R I S M BOROVSK , founded in 1358, can justly be called the Russian center of Old Belief. Protopope Avvakum, the ideologist of dissention in the Russian Orthodox Church, was imprisoned here, B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N and the disfavored boyar Morozova and her sister Evdokia Urusova died here in a land hole. Today, the main destination for pilgrims is the famous PafnutiyBorovsk monastery. Borovsk’s rich history is illustrated by the numerous murals created by Vladimir Ovchinnikov. The enthusiast artist creates his paintings, illustrating the town’s history or reflecting its metaphysics, on facades of buildings. His Parallel Town project has earned Borovsk the title of “an open air museum”, “the painted town” and “the portal town”. THE PAFNUTIY-BOROVSK MONASTERY Borovsk District In 1444, reverend Pafnutiy and his apprentices built and sanctified a temple in an impenetrable forest near Borovsk. This date is now known as the date, on which the Borovsk Monastery was established. At the end of the XVI century, fearing an outbreak of war with Poland, Moscow’s government built strong fortress walls around the monastery. One of the XVII century chronicles says: when Lzhedmitry II sieged the monastery, he encountered strong resistance, and was able to break into the convent only through the treason of the waywode. The defenders continued to fight back until all were dead. In honor of their heroic deed, in 1777, Borovsk received its coat of arms: a heart with a cross (symbol of loyalty) in a laurel wreath. 19 T O U R I S M KOZELSK Even though is a small town, it is older than Moscow, even if by just a single year. The first mention of Kozelsk in the Tale of Bygone Years dates back to 1146. It is a legendary town that has earned military glory by fierce resistance to Baty-khan’s horde. The Khan labelled Kozelsk as an “evil town”. In 2009, Kozelsk was awarded the status of a Town of Military Glory. B R A N D S O F K A L U G A Kozelsk is also called the “spiritual center of Orthodox Russia”. It is home to the Saint Vvedensky friary Optina Pustyn, a XVIIIXIX century architectural monument, and the Kazan Amvrosy convent Shamordino. Tourists enjoy mystical routes to “devil’s hillfort”, stone age man sites, ancient settlements, burial mounts and bannerstones. OPTINA PUSTYN Kozelsk District Major spiritual center of monachism, a mecca for pilgrims. The exact date of its construction is unknown, with scientists dating it to the turn of the XIV-XV centuries. It is believed that the monastery was founded by Optiy, a repentant outlaw, and was merely a tiny abode until the XIX century. 20 In 1821, the central priory was built, and a while later Optina Pustyn became the center of Russian spiritual life. It was visited by the most famous personalities of the Russian Empire. Optina’s elders possessed great gifts – prudence, clairvoyance, the ability to cure and perform miracles. Today, Optina Pustyn is a complex system of cathedrals, the largest of which is the Vvedensky Cathedral. R E G I O N T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N PEOPLE THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY British writer, historian and philosopher Thomas Carlyle once rightfully said: “The history of the world is but the biography of great men”. On their cultural and educational journeys, tourists learn about the men that brought glory to Kaluga land. Many tours in Kaluga Region are dedicated to great people: “Land of Kutuzov’s Victories”, “Motherland of Marshal G.K. Zhukov”, “Trail of Napoleon’s Demise”, “Gogol in Kaluga”, “Kaluga Footprints of the Romanov Dynasty”. Kaluga Region is associated with the names of famous scientists, military leaders and Russian classics. K.E. TSIOLKOVSKY – THE FOUNDING FATHER OF SPACE SCIENCE A.S. PUSHKIN AND THE GONCHAROV ESTATE 79 Tsiolkovskogo Str., Kaluga 49 Tsiolkovskogo Str., Borovsk, Kaluga Region Due to the bold calculations made by a modest math teacher, Kaluga is now known as the cradle of space science. Our land is where all his great scientific discoveries were made. Walking through Borovsk, where the scientist’s career started, and Kaluga, where he later moved, you will see many space-related landmarks, the most important of which are the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics and the K.E. Tsiolkovsky Memorial House. Kaluga Region, Dzerzhinsky District Cloth Factory Estate Museum The Cloth Factory Estate located on the Sukhodrev River not far from Kaluga was formerly the ancestral estate of the famous Goncharov family. The estate owes its name to the factory established here at the beginning of the XVIII century that manufactured cloth for sails and paper. Apart from the head of the family, Afanasi Goncharov, another famous representative of the dynasty is his great granddaughter, the gorgeous Natalia Goncharova, who became the wife of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The estate was visited by Empress Ekaterina II, and in 1812 Kutuzov set up his headquarters here. A.S. Pushkin stayed at the estate twice, and N.V. Gogol visited as well. 21 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N A.L. CHIZHEVSKY – THE BEGINNING OF RUSSIAN COSMISM 62 Moskovskaya Str., Kaluga RUSSIAN TSARINAS Natalia Naryshkina Evdokia Streshneva Evdokia Lopukhina Kaluga Region, Meshchovsk Kaluga Region is directly linked to the Romanov dynasty. Three of Russian tsars found their wives here: Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov – the founder of the dynasty, Alexei Fyodorovich and Peter I. The young tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich personally selected his bride out of 60 maidens from old-line Russian families. He chose Evdokia Streshneva, born in Meshchovsk Country of Kaluga Provence. She became a symbol of fidelity and righteousness, and there is a monument to her at the wall of the Meshchovsk Monastery of Saint George. Alexei Mikhailovich, Evdokia’s son, also married a lady from Kaluga – Natalia Naryshkina, who was born in Tarussa County. Their son Peter, who later entitled himself emperor, was first married to a Kalugaborn maiden from the Lopukhin dynasty. She was tsarina for seven years, and was the last, as after her there were only foreign-blooded empresses in Russia. Excommunicated from the throne, Evdokia Lopukhina could have started a revolt, but she chose to go into convent. At the end of her life, she was offered the throne but refused it, forever remaining a humbled tsarina in the memories of the people. 22 Alexander Leonidovich Chezhevsky was a Russian scientist whose discoveries were far ahead of his time. Many events of his life are associated with Kaluga. He lived here with his family in a two-storey stone house with a mezzanine. On the second floor of this house, young Alexander performed his first experiments in heliobiology. Here, he also discovered the stimulating effect of negatively ionized air on living organisms, which was later implemented in the “Chizhevsky lamp”. Today, his discoveries are used in medicine, agriculture, industry. Chizhevsky was greatly influenced by his acquaintance with Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, who gave direction to and supported the young scientist. Dreams of space conquests later transformed into a desire to understand the principles of interaction between our biosphere and the Solar System, the theory of energetic connection between events on Earth and cosmic events. For the development of these ideas, Chizhevsky is referred to as one of the founding fathers of Russian cosmism. T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N TSIPULIN WAS OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR MARX Ivan Tsipulin was a merchant and steamboat owner, who beat all records of tenure as the mayor of Kaluga. He ran for office four times, serving the city and its residents for 16 years, until the day of his death. Tsipulin’s personality and business qualities won him the love and respect of all Kaluga residents. He built the city’s first aqueduct, set up a system to insure Kaluga’s residents from fire damage, issued an interest free loan for the construction of a poorhouse, gave up his own house for a vocational school, donated funds for restoration of churches and construction of new hospitals, established an office for the Syzran-Vyazemsk railway in Kaluga, organized shipping traffic on the Oka, built a city library and infirmary. It was due to his efforts that in the middle of XIX century merchant Kaluga became a major port and industrial center. A steamboat named in his honor navigated the Oka for a long time. In 1917, almost 20 years after Tsipulin’s death, a funny incident occurred. A monument to Karl Marx was erected in Ivanovskaya (Lenina) street, and when common locals saw it, they mistook the founder of scientific communism for their former mayor, saying to each other: “Have you seen? The new authorities built a statue for Tsipulin!” Tsipulin’s estate on Podvoyskogo street has been preserved and currently houses the Oka Shipping Company. In 2014, the region’s governor suggested that the monument of XIX century architecture be transferred to the city to be restored and turned into Tsipulin’s museum. GEORGY ZHUKOV – MARSHAL OF VICTORY Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was a great military leader, marshal of the Soviet Union, USSR Minister of Defense (1955-1957), four-time Hero of the Soviet Union, holder of two Orders of Victory, numerous soviet and foreign decorations. Zhukov left a mark in history as one of the key architects of the victory in the Second World War, in the course of which he was assigned to a variety of posts – from chief of General Staff, to front commander, member of the Supreme High Command General Headquarters and to deputy supreme commander. His name is inextricably connected to all strategically important military decisions of the soviet army during the Second World War. In 1945, Zhukov took the salute of the Victory Parade on Red Square. 190 avenues, streets, squares and lanes in cities around Russia are named in his honor. But the most important museum of the great commander is located in Kaluga Region, where he was born. The state museum, founded in 1960, is located in the town of Zhukov. The core of the collection is made up by personal items, photographs, documents donated to the museum by Georgy Konstantinovich himself, his relatives, friends and colleagues. 23 T O U R I S M B R A N D S O F K A L U G A R E G I O N ECOTOURISM UGRA NATIONAL PARK Extends through six administrative districts: Yukhnov, Iznosky, Dzerzhinsky, Peremyshl, Babynino, Kozelsk MOSCOW kaluga КИЕВ The national park, 200 km long, with an area of 90,000 hectares, has no analogues in Russia.
