Sticky Notes: Make Front Page News!
We will put your Sticky Note on the front page of The Courier-Journal
any day of the week and on the home page of courier-journal.com.
Just think of the exposure you’ll get on the first page our readers see
your ad. Several predefined geographic distribution areas are offered.
A minimum quantity of 10,000 is required.
Polybag Advertising: That Important First Impression
Polybag and sample pouch advertising are available both daily and
Sunday. Polybags can be ordered through a plastic bag printer, or
The Courier-Journal can handle the complete project for you — from
creative to delivery. As with our insert programs, Polybags and sample
pouches offer you the opportunity to target a selected audience on a
specific day of the week. A minimum quantity of 20,000 is required.
Preprint “Jackets”: Perfect for Longer-Term Advertising
The preprint “jacket” is a broadsheet-size, single sheet of heavy-duty paper used to enclose preprints that are distributed
primarily on days other than Wednesday or Sunday. The distribution area is determined by which ZIP Codes are scheduled to
receive two or more preprints on any given weekday. The number of “jackets” distributed within that area depends upon the
number of subscribers we have there. Because it is impossible to forecast which ZIP Codes will require a “jacket” on any given
day, the exact distribution dates and quantities cannot be determined in advance. We will estimate a six-week window of time
in which the “jacket “ may be distributed. It is recommended that businesses not advertise dated material such as a sale on a
specific date or temporary sales prices. A minimum quantity of 200,000 is required.
Size/Paper Requirements
Tab size preprints can measure up to 10-1/2” x 12”. The smallest size we
accept is 5” x 7-1/2” with a minimum of four pages. Four-page preprints
must be on 70# stock or heavier to ensure proper handling.
Full size (or standard size) preprints must be “half-folded” to be inserted
properly. The folded size must be no larger than 10-1/2” x 12”.
Single sheet fliers supplied by an advertiser must be at least 5” x 7-1/2”
and printed on 70# stock. Newsprint or extremely slick stock single sheets
may cause problems.
A check by the Mailroom Superintendent is essential to ensure proper
handling. If there is any question regarding the ability to properly insert a
specific size or type of preprint, an advanced sample should be submitted.
Fliers printed by The Courier-Journal under the Flier Program are offered
in two sizes: 8-1/2” x 11” or 11” x 17” (folded to create a four page tab).
They are printed on 60# matte stock.
Insert X-Press fliers are offered in several sizes and printed on 60#
enamel paper.
Sticky Notes are 3” x 3”.

GUIDE TO PALLET LOADING FOR
NEWSPAPER INSERT MATERIAL
This information has been compiled to enhance efforts at simplifying and organizing the
quality, identification and distribution of preprints.
PALLET PACKING
• Supplements must be suitable for machine inserting and must not be tied or banded in
bundles except where absolutely necessary for stacking and shipping purposes (e.g.
very slick preprints). Tied bundles often cause additional unnecessary labor costs in the
mailroom. In addition, advertisers may be paying additional unnecessary costs for tying
preprints. All preprints should be shipped loose, not tied, in turns of 100. Any not in accurate turns will be counted (if time permits) and additional charges made to the advertiser.
• Supplements must be brick stacked with interlocking layers.
• All supplements must be stacked on pallets in consistent lifts and should be well-jogged,
securely banned and plastic stretch-wrapped.
• Sheets of cardboard, or suitable binder sheets, not waxed or coated, should be placed
between layers to help keep supplements flat.
• Folded edges should be turned toward the inside of the load whenever possible to
prevent damage.
• Pallet tops must be wood or a sturdy equivalent the same size as the pallet base in order
to keep the top flat and protect the product.
• Banding should be tight without pulling down and bending the top turn or pulling loose the
pallet flooring. There should be a minimum of four bands on each load.
• Floor clearance from floor to bottom of pallet base is a minimum of 4-1/2 inches to a
maximum of 8 inches.
• Maximum allowable loaded pallet height is 5 feet measured from the floor to the top of the
pallet.
• Maximum acceptable weight per loaded pallet is 2,500 pounds.
• Unstable products that are difficult to contain and require banding for lifts must be put in
telescoping cartons.
• A sample of the insert must be displayed on two adjacent sides of each pallet.
PALLET TAGS
Individual pallets must carry pallet tags visible from two adjacent sides of the pallet.
The Pallet Tag must include Name of newspaper
Name of advertiser
Insert name
Edition date of insertion
Total number of inserts shipped
Number of inserts on the pallet
Total number of pallets in the shipment
Individual pallet number
Total pallet weight
Number of copies in each lift
Name of printer and phone number
Reserved space for 2 bar codes for future use
Pallets must be loaded on the truck so that the pallet tag is displayed facing the fork truck operator.

ADDITIONAL PALLET LOADING TIPS
• Pallets must be loaded on trucks or trailers for ease of unloading. They must not be
“double-decked.”
• Improperly constructed pallets and skids break apart during handling and shipping,
causing insert damage.
• The pallet top provides additional banding protection and helps keep top of load flat
permitting pallets to be stacked for storage.
• Unstable, difficult to control products should be put in telescoping cartons, not
banded.
• Products protruding beyond pallet limits are subject to damage. Damaged inserts
will not feed through an automated inserting machine.
• Turns within a lift reduce efficiency of the hopper loader operator.
• Each box must have a proper label attached in case boxes are separated at the
insert site. A sample of the insert should be displayed on the pallet for ready identification of pallet load.
• A protective cover should be placed on the pallet before stacking to minimize the
possibility of damp or curled sections.
• Brick stacking stabilizes the load for ease of shipping, handling and storage.
Loading and storage restrictions make 4-way pallet access essential.
• Banding individual lifts can cause product damage and create hopper feeding
problems.
• Excessive banding pressure causes insert damage.
• Dunnage must be used wherever necessary to keep carton load intact.
• Piggy-backing a bundle or box of inserts results in damaged inserts which can’t
be used.
