Untitled - Hudson Pride Connections Center
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Hudson Pride Community Members,
As Hudson Pride Connections Center (HPCC) enters into a new chapter, I have been honored to lead the charge as your Executive Director. It has been a phenomenal experience
collaborating with our community partners, and I recognize that our work would not be possible without the support of our volunteer and donor community, which includes you!
We have come a long way as an LGBT community and there are many successes to celebrate. Just a year ago, JCLGO and the HPCC Board of Directors had the vision to house all
the social services provided to the LGBT community in Hudson County and its annual pride
celebration under one roof. With exceptional leadership and a strong volunteer base, that
vision has become a reality! Thanks to the Hudson County office of Housing & Community
Development, we completed an Energy Conservation Project that beatified the center and
made it more cost-effective. We launched the first SAGE Northern NJ Chapter to serve the
aging LGBT community and our outreach services continue to enrich the lives of HIV+ individuals. This year has proven that the harder we work, and the more committed we remain,
the stronger we will be and the more peaks we will see in our future.
Our 2011 theme, “Do Ask, Do Tell”, speaks to the heart of our heritage of being strong and
visible contributors to society. I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with committed staff
and board members who are contributing to society’s improvement. We know it’s not glamorous work, but our efforts mean tangible, positive changes in LGBT people’s lives every day,
and that’s why we do it.
Whether you’ve visited Hudson Pride once or you come regularly, I invite you to take a look
at all we have to offer and to get involved in the life-changing work we do. From all of us at
HPCC, thank you! We are grateful for your support, and we look forward to celebrating our
pride with you every day of the year!

and i moved to New york City. Facing many difficulties i was able to make New york City my home and
i was on my way to establishing a modeling and entertainment career. Since 1998 i have modeled for

Plastiq Passion
Take everything you think you know about girl bands and throw it out the window because Plastiq Passion rocks out like no other. Their energetic and passionate live show continues to create quite a buzz
amongst concert goers in New york City as well as nation-wide, ever since their 2008 cross-country
tour. Their newest album To Be a Blade of Grass in Cracked Cement has been in regular rotation on
New york City’s only modern rock station 101.9 rXP since its release in 2010 and continues to garner
excellent reviews which opened the door for them to open up for such notable acts as The Cult and
Dramarama. Plastiq Passion is made up of the enigmatic Jessica Chaos on vocals, the quiet but wise
Deborrah Sanchez on lead guitar, the rather tall Christine Simon on bass, and the animal Stacey lee on
drums. Collectively they have a goal to play every single rock venue in America (and also the world) including, but not limited to, your basement. So keep a look out for these four hardcore momma-jamma’s
and don’t mess with them, because they have a black-belt in bar stools.

Sexual Minorities in Academia: The Show Must Go On!
By Renata Moreira, LGBTQ Taskforce Chair, New Jersey City University
Can you guess what kinds of resources are specifically dedicated to the support of lGBT
people on college campuses in our county? The sad truth is that, despite endless media campaigns around same-sex/identity issues and wide-spread mobilizations all over the
country, our LGBT population continues to be virtually invisible in the eyes of “the man.”
Practically all research examining the perceptions and experiences of LGBT students, faculty, and staff point to the fact that we are still being pushed to the backburner by folks
who just don’t quite get how pervasive homo/bi/trans-phobia really is... Need further evidence? Check out some of the 2010 findings published in “The State of Higher Education
for LGBT People,” one of the most comprehensive national reports on the subject to date:
1. lGBQ students experience significantly greater harassment and discrimination than
their heterosexual allies - They are also more likely to drop out of school than their
straight counterparts.
2. respondents who identified as trans-masculine/feminine, and gender non-conforming,
experienced higher rates of harassment than those who identified as men/women.
3. LGBTQ faculty and staff members had more negative perceptions of campus climate
than their straight counterparts.
And the list goes on…
Does it get better? Sure. But only when you mobilize with other equality lovers on your campus
to call attention to the priorities of our LGBT populations. Here’s a story to illustrate the point:
In the Fall of 2010, New Jersey City University student leaders took stock of the campus resources across
the State: Some institutions had funded Centers specifically dedicated to serving their needs. NJCU students don’t even have an LGBTQ club room to build their community. Other schools had at least one
full time trained staff to support them. NJCU students rely on passionate, but overextended volunteer advisors. They also found out that other universities have been updating their records (e.g., housing, health, admissions) to allow students the option to self-identify. Not the case on their campus yet…
They were fired up by the results and formed a coalition of students, faculty, and staff to promote the
visibility of sexual minorities on campus. Working night and day, they organized vigils, town hall meetings, dorm talks, petition campaigns, and met with their peers, faculty, staff, and the administration.
Seeing their tireless efforts, the administration took action this past June and created a university-wide LGBTQ
and Ally Taskforce. The taskforce is charged with conducting a comprehensive campus climate assessment and
submitting recommendations that may inform future resource allocations for the LGBT population. Time to
celebrate? Not quite yet… Seeing the economic crisis, other university initiatives are likely to take precedence over LGBTQ needs if campus leaders and allies don’t stay in action as they did over the past year.
The show must go on, bois and grrrls! A state-wide coalition will be convening at the “11th LGBTQA
leadership Conference” at Montclair State university on November 4, 2011. All NJ college students
are encouraged to attend (free of charge) and contribute to the equality movement on every campus
across the State! For more information and/or to register, please email [email protected]
Do Ask, Do Tell
By David Bimbi
in the early 1980’s as a teenager, i attended my first gay pride march wearing a borrowed t-shirt that
read “How dare you assume I’m straight” and I think that captures the theme of this year’s Pride Festival
perfectly. We should tell people about our lives and more importantly, never assume people are straight.
“Oh you’re married, husband or wife?” By asking heterosexual’s about their sexual orientation, they get to
takea walk in our shoes for minute. So Do ASk and Do TEll about sexual identity and orientation,
and don’t forget to add gender identity to that as well. We can put Do ASk, Do TEll into practice in
many ways.
When we meet our elected and appointed government officials, Do ASk in what ways they support
our communities. DO TELL them about what you are doing. Tell them how much we need their support.Tell them we need marriage equality, more funding for Hiv/AiDS prevention and services for those
with Hiv/AiDS, and programs from anti-bullying to social support for our youth, who we must protect
and foster to become the next generation of leaders.
When meeting folks expressing anti-lGBT beliefs, Do ASk how they came to these beliefs and Do
TELL how expressing anti-LGBT beliefs harms members of our community in a multitude of ways, from
outright discrimination to outrageous and brutal acts of violence against members of our community.
Tell them the pain it causes to hear our lives discussed as though we are less than human and have
nothing to offer society.
When meeting other lGBT folks, Do ASk how they are involved in our communities. We cannot be
complacent, and simply thank those working to improve the lives of LGBT people without stepping up
in some way, any way. A phone call to a legislator, making a small donation to our very important and
sadly underfunded LGBT organizations, or just showing up at an LGBT event. Lastly, DO TELL about
your involvement with Hudson Pride Connections or any other LGBT organization, lead through the
power of example!
