Welcome! The Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology) would like to invite you to join us for an eventful and enjoyable journey of discovery through the cultural history of technology. The museum o≠ers a forum for culture and technology close to Potsdamer Platz, occupying an unmistakeable location on the site of the former goods yard of Anhalter Bahnhof. The large museum park – containing two windmills, a water mill and a brewery – is also an oasis of green. The museum also has a well-stocked library on the history of technology as well as historical archives. Spectrum, the neighbouring Science Center, presents more than 250 experiments for discovering physical phenomena through play. The Zucker-Museum (Sugar Museum), the ArchenholdSternwarte (Archenhold Observatory) and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium (Zeiss Planetarium) are attractive outposts of the Stiftung Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin (Foundation of the German Museum of Technology Berlin). Aviation and Space Flight Railways Post windmill Printing technology The Deutsches Technikmuseum, founded in 1982, stands in a long tradition of scientific and technical collections. Many of these had their home in Berlin for more than 120 years, and some of these collections have been taken over by the Deutsches Technikmuseum. A great deal, however, was destroyed during the World War II, or moved elsewhere. The museum presents a broad spectrum of old and new technology and demonstrates the various historical connections to culture and everyday life. Daily demonstrations, visitor activities and guided tours – as well as experiments in the S cience Center Spectrum – make the Deutsches Technik museum an interactive learning experience. Film technology Railway yard Data systems Communications engineering The museum occupies a historical industrial site dating back to 1874. The contemporary architecture of the new extension for the aviation and maritime collections fits perfectly into these surroundings to form a fascinating ensemble. The “raisin bomber” suspended from the façade makes the extension a prominent urban landmark. With its opening an important phase in the museum’s development was marked, but we are already working on plans for further expansion. Jewellery production Textile technology Suitcase production Municipal transport depot THE COMMUNICATIVE MUSEUM Exciting events take place all year round, including the “special museum nights”, readings, lectures, open days at the municipal transport depot (September Sundays), events associated with special exhibitions and many more. THE MUSEUM VENUE The Deutsches Technikmuseum has become one of Berlin’s most attractive event venues, o≠ering a wide range of original and creative settings – engine sheds, brewery, museum park and the modern extension. The ArchenholdSternwarte and the Zeiss Großplanetarium are also popular event venues. Friends of the Museum The Friends of the Museum support the museum financial ly, and by their voluntary work on the model railway and events like the “long nights of the museums” and the open days at the municipal transport depot. The society welcomes all o≠ers of support and gives all members a wide range of reductions.
