What if the purely abstract movements, originally executed so perfectly that they seem almost mechanical, woud be danced by an unsuitable performer? Wrong, inappropriate, inept. We wanted to mix minimalist virtuosity of the choreography with an imaginary figure that doesn't fit to this mathematical univerce. It asks questions, pokes minds and demands attention without speaking a single word. Footscray acts here as a non-‐site that could be almost anywhere: Queens in New York or Salford in Manchester. The figure we follow emerging from a crepuscular time is recognisably ubiquitous the world over – a disenfranchised youth, a wanderer, a young and listless man. This figure is feared the world over for his seemingly wanton disregard for systems, rules and consequences. Of 39 course the reality here is much different and possibly too complex for simple narratives. In the aftermath of the recent London riots, a whole pseudoscience seemed to appear almost immediately in the papers asking ‘how did this happen?’ Zile’s film shows that, possibly more than anything else, this figure somehow evades appropriate representation, both politically and aesthetically. -‐ Matthew Shannon 2012 NL | 2012 | 12,50’ Director Emile Zile Choreographer Jack Sheppard Production Company Artist Composer Philip Brophy Camera Mikael Brain Sound Design Philip Brophy Cast Jack Sheppard 129 LYNCHING Lynching is a dance homage to David Lynch`s visual narrative. ""Dido's Lament"" is the commonly used name for the aria ""When I am laid in earth"" from the Opera Dido and Aeneas by H. Purcell. The aria is singed by Dido to Belinda, her friend, before committing suicide. When I am laid, When I am laid in Earth, May my wrongs create No toubles, no troubles in thy brests Remember me, remember me, but -‐ ah! -‐ forget my faith"" Our video starts with the image of a musician (Claudio Jacomucci) at present times, who is playing the aria on his bayan. He's sitting in darkness. As he plays, he begins to imagine Dido. She is standing on the top of a hill, and she has been abandoned by Aeneas. She is desperate, considering suicide. Dido (Kathleen Delaney) is placed in a very evocative naturalistic set. All the images are thought as flashes of the musician's imaginations. And do not follow a narrative, rather a fragmented and circular logic, that ends in darkness again, with the images of the bayan mirroring the fire, allusive of the death on a pire of Dido."
