Stress is the source of not only minor issues such as the cold and flu, but of
many of our greater health challenges such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes,
gastrointestinal disorders, and many others. In fact, stress is responsible for the
aging process that occurs within our body.

Any time the discussion of peace arises, it evokes innumerable questions as
well as assumptions. Does one wage war to attain peace? Is peace opposite of
war? How does one find peace? How does inner peace relates to health?

Stress Relieving Drumming Tapping
Spring has sprung here in The Old Pueblo, and so have our allergies. It is time to clean up our homes and our lives too.
The birds and bees have returned. OK, so just the birds. The bees are all dead! The pollinating crops will be gone soon too.
Probably the birds will also be gone. What was that book I read in the past, Silent Spring? Oh well, global warming is striking
us all, much sooner then we ever thought. WAY TOO MUCH STRESS!!!
Arizona Choices has some answers to too much stress: A great, practical EFT Mini-course by Damaris Drewry, Ph.D.; a
wonderful, practical article by Dr. Jonas Yakel, on Stress & Aging; an enjoyable Mindful Drumming article by world famous
teachers, Aeeshah & Kokomon Clottey; and, of course, Paul Reeder keeps us on time astrologically speaking with his Cosmic
Clock column.
Unfortunately, we do not have answers to the Bee problem, but YOU could start to use less gas and recycle more. Just a
few small steps by us all could help!
Last issue, I advertised myself as a Business Coach. The subsequent work I’ve done with individuals over the last two
months has led me to allow the many wonderful unseen spiritual friends I have been blessed with to take over my body at
specific times to help. I had been trained in trace channeling many years ago, and have used this talent of being able to get out
of the way to guide various people over the years. I am now intending, for the highest good, to open myself to this process on
a regular basis. If I may be of assistance, please let me know. See my Directory ad on P 22.

What’s All the Jazz About Emotional
Freedom Techniques™?
By Damaris Drewry, Ph.D. Psychology

suggestion or merely a distraction. But there are thousands of documented stories of relief from depression,
anxiety, stress, PTSD, addictive cravings, and a host of
other emotional and physical issues are available on
www.emofree.com. You will find there endorsements
from highly regarded medical doctors and psychotherapists – because IT WORKS! My own stories of amazing success with EFT are up there too – and I also dismissed EFT when I first heard of it in 2001. Now I use it
in 100% of my private sessions. So here are a few facts;
you decide!*
Developed by Gary Craig using Neurolinguistic
Programming ™ (NLP) and Callahan’s method of finger-tapping on acupuncture meridian points to relieve
emotional distress, EFT is an innovative, gentle method
of reframing intense feelings about past events or traumas, and it’s nothing short of AMAZING! It’s a bit like
clearing a logjam that’s blocking a stream where the
logs represent a stuck emotion in the energy streams
of your body. It can be used by a highly skilled practitioner to help you resolve life-long and intense core
issues, or it can be a user-friendly, self-help technique
to quickly banish a headache.
E
Damaris Drewry, Ph.D.
motional Freedom Techniques ™ (EFT) is a controversial mind-body self-help tool that brings rapid
resolution to physical and emotional distress. It
works by re-setting the body’s electrical system much
like re-setting a circuit breaker after an overloaded fuse
blows in your house! You don’t have to believe the theory (below), just as you don’t need to know how a car
works to drive one – you may be happy simply to have
your problem resolved!
EFT effectively deals with many issues that traditionally fall into the realm of psychotherapy, and many psychologists object that something so simple could really
be effective. They are not alone — many skeptics think
EFT is nothing more than a new term for the power of
EFT falls under the umbrella of Energy Healing
Modalities, which addresses the relationship of the human energy systems to emotion, cognition (how we
make sense of our world), behavior, and health. These
systems include electrical activity of the nervous system
and heart, acupuncture meridians, chakras, and energy
fields surrounding the body. Although not yet empirically
proven or accepted by licensing boards, EP applications
include education, vocational guidance, physical health,
pain management, sports and peak performance. (www.
energypsych.org).
How Does It Work?
With EFT you become your own therapist, and
your EFT practitioner is your guide. Practitioners
of basic EFT show you how to use the techniques
so you can manage emotional distress and resolve

your own problems and issues. Highly skilled practitioners help you resolve more complex issues.
is broken. This is a complex core issue but can be reframed in 2 or 3 sessions!
“Many core issues are rooted in the neural structure of
the brain. A neural pathway in the brain is like a groove
in a record album or CD created by habitual thinking - If
you keep thinking about the same old thing the same old
way you will just get more of it because, by the Law of
Attraction, what we focus on expands! EFT works by interrupting the way thoughts and emotions are chemically
recorded in the brain while you are tapping on meridians
and speaking about core issues.” – D. Drewry, Ph.D.
(2) Core Beliefs: are basic assumptions upon
which our everyday thoughts and actions are based.
Our thoughts create reality: physics and metaphysics
are now seamlessly and scientifically joined together
by quantum theory: shamans, secret societies and Einstein know that all there is in the universe is energy
and matter is NOT solid at the atomic level, our bodies
ARE vibrating energy patterns, and what we focus on
causes possibilities to ‘collapse’ from energy patterns
into matter and experience. So, if your basic assumptions (even if unconscious) about yourself are negative,
experiences and events you draw into your life will be
negative too.
Let’s add several body-mind principles together to
explain how EFT works (in the author’s opinion):
(1) Did you ever notice that you’re not emotional
about a past event unless you think about it? This is
the window of opportunity for using EFT or other energy psychology modalities because, as Neurobiologist
Candace Pert says, remembering a trauma or event
triggers emotions that activate specific neural pathways and neural nets in the brain, releasing neuropeptides (chemical messengers) in the brain that instantaneously communicate new information to every cell in
the body. This is a moment where true transformation
can happen! How? Tiny electric signals go from your
fingers through your acupuncture meridians straight
to the area of the brain where the memory is stored,
changes the chemical structure of the memory, and you
immediately feel differently about a past event. Dr. Pert
endorses EFT as being “at the forefront of the new healing movement.”
The only way to change a neural pathway is to interrupt the electrical process in the brain that created it
in the first place – and recreates it every time we think
about the same event!
So now you’re saying, “what the heck is a neural
net?” A neural net is a web of neural pathways that
“fire” together and “wire” together from a habitual way
of thinking about a past event. That’s taken from the
“Bleep” movie, but it comes from Hebb’s Law: if one
neuron stimulates another neuron, the intensity of the
connection between the two is strengthened. Example:
let’s say a parent hits or belittles a child. The child will
associate her love for the parent with disappointment,
fear of repeated hurts, and feelings of low self-esteem:
all four of those emotions create a web of neural pathways = a neural net. Then, whenever the child thinks
about love, all of the other emotions ride along with it
creating future relationship problems until the pattern

Affirmations are great, but if you do them while you
are tapping you will get much better results!
(3) EFT makes you responsible for your well-being:
the way you see and talk to yourself, consciously and
unconsciously, can make you sick or make you well; so
when you are speaking during EFT, you speak words in
the present tense and you emphasize self-acceptance.
You cannot change anything about yourself until you
first accept yourself the way you are.
Disease isn’t a thing that victimizes you, it’s a way
of acting out your life. You may not want to recognize
yourself as the source of your ailments, but until you
do you are not in the ‘driver’s seat’ of your own vehicle. Remember: your body believes every word you
say, positive or negative!
How Is It Done?
Core Issues + tapping on acupuncture meridians =
dissolving old thinking patterns by changing the electrical wiring (neural pathways) in your brain! The result is
freedom from emotional pain and physical stress!
EFT is versatile: There is a short form of EFT and a
long form. People using EFT for self-help are not usually adept at diving in after their own complex core issues
– but you can dissolve a fear of spiders in 15 minutes!
I’ve done over 250 sessions with people and 90% of
them get immediately relief using the short form. Here
it is. Tapping specific acupressure points along your
meridians will move stuck feelings and blocked energy.
Use this technique to clear unwanted patterns, feelings, thoughts, cravings (addictions), phobias, physical pain, and anything that disrupts your life. Try EFT
even on things that seem impossible – it may work!
Be persistent! My clients have had success with allergies, asthma, impotence, frozen shoulder syndrome,
freeway anxiety, incest, depression, grief, PTSD, career
changes, and anger.
A unique thing about EFT is that you don’t have to
reveal the incident to speak out loud if it’s embarrassing
to you.
EYEBROW (EB)
SIDE OF EYE (SE)
UNDER EYE (UE)
UNDER NOSE (UN)
CHIN (CH)
Step 1. Sit in a straight-backed chair. Choose the
SPECIFIC incident or issue for treatment.
Step 2. Determine the intensity of the distress on
a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is the greatest amount of
distress.
Step 3. While tapping the
outside edge of one hand with
your other hand, repeat the
following statement: “Even
though I have this (state the
problem), I deeply and completely love myself and accept
my feelings.” Do this three times.
COLLARBONE (CB)
UNDERARM (UA)
HEAD (H)
Examples of core issues are:
I have this headache…or back pain…etc.
I
I
I
I
I
I
am
am
am
am
am
am
extremely angry with …
profoundly sad about…
terrified of snakes…
allergic to cats…
STILL smoking…
overweight….
Step 4. Look at the diagram and repeat the above
phrase while tapping the following points with both
hands:
• above the eyebrows near center of forehead
• the outside corners of your eyes
• under your nose
• in the middle of your chin
• just underneath your collarbone where the sensitive spots are
• underneath your arms (for women, under your
bra)
• on the top of your head
Step 5. Check the intensity of the feelings again. If
some of it remains, create a short Reminder Phrase of
the problem you want to work on, such as “this anxiety
problem” or “my cigarette cravings.”
Step 6. If necessary, start over tapping the outside
edge of your hand three times saying: “Even thoughI
have this remaining (problem), I love and accept myself.”
Continue around all the tapping points again. Keep doing this until the intensity of distress is zero.
DISCLAIMER: EFT isn’t used to diagnose or treat
any physical, emotional, or mental condition or illness.
It is used to reframe the way we feel and think about
events in our lives, our relationship with ourselves, others, and the world around us. Sometimes EFT doesn’t
work. Scientific research is underway to measure how
it works, but there is, as yet, no proof. (www.energypsych.org). Before you try to use EFT on yourself for
a highly distressing problem, make sure that you understand the basic principles of how to do it. You can
get this information for free on Gary Craig’s website:

Stress and Aging
Welcome To A World Of Stress!
By Dr. Jonah Yakel
“…my experience tells me that we are not yet grasping the truly devastating effects of stress on the

reduction. What this tells us is that people are becoming more aware of how stress is disrupting the quality
of their lives. Despite this increase in awareness, my
experience tells me that we are not yet grasping the
truly devastating effects of stress on the body. Stress is
the source of not only minor issues such as the cold and
flu, but of many of our greater health challenges such
as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, and many others. In fact, stress is responsible
for the aging process that occurs within our body. Unfortunately, stress reduction is approached as a luxury,
as something that can be enjoyed every so often. But
given the amount of chronic stress that we experience
in our day-to-day lives, stress is something that needs
to be addressed on a daily basis.
So What Is Stress?
Dr. Jonah Yakel
S
tress seems to be getting a lot of attention in
today’s world. There are spas, yoga studios, fitness gyms, retreat centers, meditation centers,
chiropractors, message therapists, acupuncturists, and
many others who focus their entire practice on stress
6 | Arizona Choices
From my many conversations with people about
stress, there seems to be a bit of a misconception about
what it is and how it affects the body. The definition of
stress as taken from the Merriam Webster dictionary
states that stress “is a physical, chemical, or emotional
factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be
a factor in disease causation.” It is important to recognize that stress in today’s society comes from many
sources.
Physically, we get stress from traumas such as automobile accidents, falling down, or from playing contact
sports. We also get physical stress from sitting in an
office all day without stretching or exercising.
Chemical stress is another form or stress and one
that is often overlooked. We are bombarded with chemical stress from air pollution and all of the hormones,
antibiotics, herbicides, and pesticides found in the food
and water we consume on a daily basis. Further, all the
stimulants we consume add to stress response that is
occurring in our bodies. Stimulants such as coffee, sugar, and nicotine all give us a sensation of increased energy, which they not really providing. These stimulants
result in the release of stress hormones into the body
resulting in a boost in adrenaline, which is different
than increasing energy. We also get chemical stress all
the toxic chemicals we use to clean our homes, clothes,
and even our bodies. Most shampoos, soaps and body
washes, deodorants, and cosmetics are extremely toxic.
Artificial sweeteners, processed foods, and all drugs
and medications are also sources of chemical stress.
The third form of stress is mental/emotional stress.
Most people are familiar with this form of stress. The
underlying factor when dealing with mental/emotional stress is a fear of the future or guilt from the past.
Whether you are worried about paying bills, a project
deadline at work, or problems within a relationship, the
body again creates a stress response that is harmful to
the body.
When considering stress, it is important to acknowledge its source and to realize that it is coming
in many forms and from many different places in our
lives. Nonetheless, it is all creating a similar response
in the body. And while it may appear to be a mere inconvenience, it is setting the stage much more severe
health challenges in the future.
Effects Of Stress On The Body
Believe it or not, stress plays a very important
purpose in our lives. Everybody has experienced the
adrenaline boost when something very stressful presents itself into our lives, whether that event is an auto
accident, crossing paths with a snake while hiking,
or having to speak publicly. What is experienced is
called the “Fight or Flight” response, which is a state
controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. When
a stressful event occurs, the body responds by re-
leasing stress hormones, primarily epinephrine and
cortisol into the blood stream. These hormones flood
the body resulting in the “fight or flight” response leading to changes in the body that include:
• Increased heart rate and blood pressure to
quickly supply oxygen to the muscles
• Blood is diverted from the gastrointestinal
tract and sent to the skeletal muscles
• The eyes dilate to improve vision of the surroundings
• The breath becomes faster and more shallow
These are just a few of the physiological changes
that occur. Again, under normal circumstances, this
is a good thing. The body is preparing to either fight
or flight. It is worried only about its survival at this
very moment. Unfortunately, the nature of stress has
changed since it was originally developed. In the past,
all of the stress hormones that flooded the body where
used in the actual process of fight or flight. Once the
stressful event was over, it was over, and one could go
back to their usual state, which is one of resting and digesting. This state is controlled by the parasympathetic
nervous system and is referred to as the relaxation response. It is in this state that healing occurs.
Unfortunately, in today’s world we live in a state of
chronic stress where we are constantly being bombarded by stressors that our ancestors did not have to deal
with. Because of this our bodies live in a constant state
of fight or flight, which means we are not healing. This
constant state of stress results in an increase in blood
pressure and cholesterol setting the stage for cardiovascular disease. Also, because blood is being moved from
the digestive tract to the skeletal muscles, gastrointestinal problems begin to occur such as ulcers, irritable
bowel syndrome, colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease,
“leaky gut,” which in turn leads to food allergies and
autoimmune disorders, and colon cancer. Further, during the “fight or fight” response, glucose is released
into the blood stream, which stimulates the production
of insulin. This is a process that begins setting the stage
for diabetes. Finally, the immune system takes a severe
hit. Ultimately, the entire body is compromised by this
response leading to a devastating effect on the body.

rounding cells and tissues. This damage creates inflammation within the cells and tissues. This process affects
the entire body. Inflammation in the arteries results in
micro abrasions, which leads to plaque buildup, setting
the stage for increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Inflammation in the digestive track leads to ulcers, irritable bowel, and leaky gut, which in turn sets the stage
for allergies, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases such
as arthritis. Free radical damage on the cellular level
leads to possible DNA damage, leading to mutations and
cancer. This is how stress and free radical can be linked
to all these diseases and speeds the aging process.
Genetics and Disease
Stress and Free Radical Damage
Free radical damage, which is caused by stress,
plays a large role in just about every disease process.
Free radical damage is primarily caused by chemical
stress to the body, but it also results from all the stress
hormones that are in the blood stream that are not being metabolized because no “fighting or flighting” is
taking place. This damage occurs at the cellular level
and is the primary source of all aging in the body. The
changes you see in ones skin as they age is due to free
radical damage. The graying of hair is due to free radical damage. And as I will discuss in a moment, most of
today’s biggest health challenges such as heart disease,
cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, and diabetes, all can
be linked to free radical damage, which of course, is
linked to stress.
A free radical is an atom or molecule that contains
and unpaired electron. Because of this unpaired electron, they are extremely unstable. In order to become
stable, they steal the electron from a neighboring atom,
which happens to make up your body. This sets up
a chain reaction that results in the damaging of sur-
8 | Arizona Choices
Genetics also play a role in the aging and disease
process. We all have good genes and bad genes, which
of course are passed along by our parents. I look at
genes as a chain link, in which there are strong links
and weak links. When our body is exposed to stress,
whether physical, chemical, or mental/emotional, it begins to create tension in the chain. Once the tension
reaches a certain point, the weak links begin to break
down. In some people, that weak link is heart disease,
in others maybe a certain type of cancer. Nonetheless,
it is chronic stress on the system that ultimately leads
to the breaking of the weak link. Even though we may
have certain genetic dispositions, it is stress that leads
to the expression of these genes.
What to Do?
Ok, so we cannot choose our parents or our genes,
so ultimately, we must choose to reduce the stress in
our lives. Hopefully, you can see that stress reduction
should be viewed as more than a luxury. It is truly the
ultimate form of disease prevention. The goal is to recognize all the sources of stress in our lives and reduce
or remove them wherever possible. We want to make
choices that will move the body from a state of chronic
stress and into a state of healing. The body was made to
heal and repair itself, but it cannot do that when it is in
a chronic state of “fight or flight.”
Physically, we can reduce stress by exercising. Even
if this means walking for 30 minutes per day, any small
increase in physical activity will help your body metabolize all the stress hormones in the blood. Getting
6-8 hours of sleep per night is also very important, because this is when healing naturally occurs in the body.
If you have trouble sleeping, regular exercise will help
tremendously. Yoga and Pilates are also great ways to
reduce physical stress. Message therapy, acupuncture,
and chiropractic care are also great ways to promote
stress reduction.
Chemically, we can replace toxic chemicals in the
home with non-toxic, environmentally safe products,
which will greatly reduce the amount of free radical
damage occurring in the body. Also choosing foods
that are organic and free of hormones and antibiotics
can help reduce chemical stress. Eating more fruits and
vegetables is important because they are packed with
vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that all promote
healing and prevent freed radical damage. Fried foods
are a major source of free radicals and should be avoided. Also choosing purified water over tap water will
help reduce chemical stress.
For mental/emotional stress, activities such as
meditation and yoga are great. Again, body workers including chiropractors, message therapists, acupuncturists, and many others, can tremendously help reduce
mental/emotional stress. Speaking with a therapist or
counselor can also be very helpful when dealing with
mental/emotional issues. Further, the power of prayer
and gratitude on a daily basis cannot be overlooked.
Whatever we are grateful for in our lives, we tend to attract more of. When we take the time to be grateful for
the health we have, we begin to attract more health into
our lives. From my experience, I am convinced that is
might be the most important change one can make.
Aging with Grace
There are so many possibilities when it comes to
reducing stress in ones life. I think it is important to
remember that even small changes can have a dramatic
impact on ones life. Change in any one of the three areas, physical, chemical, mental/emotional, will affect
the wellbeing of the other two. You will find that by
exercising more, you will be inclined to eat better and
you will feel better emotionally. The same is true if you
choose to make change to your diet. You will most likely experience more energy and begin exercising more
regularly. In this way, small lifestyle changes can have
a dramatic result in reducing stress and creating more
wellness and an improved quality of life.

Mindful Drumming and Global Peace

Any time the discussion of peace arises, it evokes innumerable questions as well as assumptions. Does

peace relates to health? Does peace have anything to do with love and joy? There are many more questions than answers. However, there is only one answer, the courage to choose peace.

The most wonderful gift to wish for anyone is
peace and love according to my people. We say “Hedzoleh aha bo”— which means “Peace be with you!” Even
if you didn’t know the translation, these words would
have a healing effect upon you. This beneficent wish
is granted by spirit on a cellular level, so, it is with
mindful drumming. Mindful Drumming reminds us of
the value of a culture of peace and aligns us with the

Conceptually, because peace is innate and central
to our wholeness as humans it is critical for us to awake
to mindful drumming as a gateway to our inner peace.
Mindful Drumming inspires us to connect to our essence, which is love and happiness. We do not have
to pursue happiness: we are happiness. Mindful drumming, the synchronistic power of rhythm and sound
brings one into the now. The drumming demonstrates
the power of working together, the value of deep listening and bringing the community into balance so
that one can experience inner peace. Mindful Drumming combines the twin concepts of rhythm and sound,
which we have found to be the most expedient way to
heal a broken heart. It brings one immediately into the
present because rhythm is finite – evoking the sense
that “now is the only time there is”, and that one can be
harmonious and in tune with “the now”.
Mindful Drumming also connects us to the ancestors, and ushers them in for healing and support.
Their timeless wisdom becomes readily available to us
through the eternal resources of rhythm and sound. If
we listen to their knowing and put their wisdom into
practice through Mindful Drumming Meditation, it is
inevitable that we will unleash the tremendous power
of our human spirit. For the sake of our children and
grandchildren –as well as our own survival –, we need
to recognize that there is another way to live. One way
to get there is to embrace the practice of inner peace
through mindful drumming, which can help us forge
new relationships with one another and a wiser stewardship of Mother Earth.
In the United States, we are urging all Americans
to understand that a conversation about peace and a
commitment to peace is nonpartisan. It is not a Democrat or Republican or Green agenda. It is an American
need. It is the process of being in the flow, connected
to our natural rhythm. It is for all of us. I, Aeeshah,
recently attended an international conference in Washington, DC hosted by Peace Alliance. More than 1000
citizens representing 45 States assembled to lobby and
advocate for the establishment of a U. S. Department
of Peace. This very diverse group of American and
global citizens from Japan, Canada, Puerto Rico, Somalia, Liberia and Ethiopia gathered in support of a
U. S. Department of Peace Bill and the development of
Global Peace Ministries. Bill # HR808 was reintroduced
on the floor of the House by Representative by Dennis Kucinich, Democrat from Ohio on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 with 51 cosponsors. Peace Alliance Conference participants had first hand experience in lobbing
Congress for this much needed bill. The bill is about
reducing violence in America. It focuses on eliminating
violence in our children’s classrooms, child abuse, domestic violence and violence on the streets of America.
I was able to speak directly with aids to Senator Boxer
and Senator Feinstein. I wanted them to understand the
importance of eliminating violence on the streets in the
city of Oakland. This past year in Oakland, California
more than one hundred young men between the ages
of thirteen and twenty-five years lost their lives to gun
violence. Furthermore, through synchronistic action
we were able to visit with more than 220 Representatives on Capitol Hill. We shared our dedication to a
U. S. Department of Peace Bill and our reasons supporting the establishment of a culture of peace. Bill HR808
will work to research, articulate and facilitate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflict.
This may sound like a new fad, the idea was first
published in Benjamin Banneker’s Almanac around
1791 and later proposed as a bill to establish a Department of Peace as a cabinet level position in the U. S.
Government by a Republican Senator, Dr. Benjamin
Rush in 1793. This wisdom is being rekindle by Senator
Kucinich. Bill HR 808 belongs to the American people.
Can you imagine? This bill has been around for more
than two hundred years. It has been introduced on the
Floor of the House of Representatives more than one
hundred times. Every so often, a congressional representative stumbles on the bill and evokes it. It reminds
one of the sankofa process in the Akan tribe of Ghana,
West Africa, where one reaches back into one’s past and
fetch a needed value and cleanse it, modernize it and
bring it into the present for the growth and wellbeing
of the community. The Department of Peace idea keeps
returning because it is the natural will of the people.
The Department of Peace Bill, HR808 belongs to the
American people. No matter how we stray from the
path of peace, our essence will bring us back. We truly
believe that peace has nothing to do with which political party you affiliate with, but that it has everything to
do with your commitment to peace.
We were moved by a statement written in the Dallas News by Kristi Meisenbach Boylan, an attendee of
the Peace Alliance Conference who is a conservative
Texan, “There were no marchers, sitters, Bush bashers or
oddly dressed participants in sight. I didn’t see a single
handmade poster. What unites the group is palpable outrage at the skyrocketing cost of violence in the U.S. One
of the participants put it succinctly when he said violence
is bankrupting our country. Statistically, he’s right. A
recent World Health Organization report estimated the
cost of interpersonal violence in the U.S. at $300 billion a
year. And this excludes the costs of war. […] I don’t know
how “peace” became such a dirty word, especially here in
Arizona Choices | 11
the conservative South. I do know that Democrats don’t
have a monopoly on it. Peace is an American touchstone.
It’s a common thread that connects all of us, regardless of
party affiliation, and it addresses the very ideals that our
country was founded on.”
As board members of Peace Alliance Foundation
and Peace Alliance, the vision and mission of Peace
Alliance moved us. We are committed to utilizing our
skills as peacemakers to bring to the attention of our
readers the power of the drum to re-align ourselves to
our natural rhythm as promoters of peace because peace
is our essence. We are deeply aware that in order to create a culture of peace we must live and practice the art
of peacemaking as an inner and an outer experience.
We are asking everyone to contact his or her senators
all over this great country to support this bill. Many organizations already support the bill; please visit www.
peacealliancefoundation.org to learn more about this
work and to see how you can align your rhythm with
the movement for nonpartisan peace.
The soul in your body has been restricted, just like a fish in
a small tank of water. The whale is the biggest animal in the
ocean. It is very large and very long. How would it be if it were
caught and confined in a small tank of water? How would it
feel? It has always been in the vast ocean, but we have captured and put it in a small glass aquarium. Similarly, your soul
has been trapped in your body and become limited. But you
are not the ordinary person you think you are. You all are like
very great whales, and you must always be in the ocean of
bliss!
As long as you are in bondage to your body, to your country,
to your city, to your children, or to your husband or wife, as
long as you have these bondages, you will always be limited.
And when you are limited, you are just like a bonsai plant. The
bonsai, if planted in the open ground, can grow and become
a very big tree, giving beautiful fruit or shade. But when it is
confined in a pot, when the roots are cut off and stunted, it
remains small. In the same way, when the soul is confined in
the body, its growth is restricted. So, when Amma comes to
you, She does not want you to be like a bonsai plant. She wants
to take all of you from the small pots and put you in the open
ground. She would like all of you to be full of freedom and liberation.

The Cosmic Clock
by Paul Reeder
T
he month of April looks pretty exciting. Breakthroughs and breakdowns seem to be the order
of the day! I mean month.
April 1st, traditionally April Fools’ Day, opens April
with Mercury and Uranus conjunct at 17° Pisces. Mercury and Uranus both have a connection to systems,
mechanical and electrical. Established systems may
prove unreliable, while new experimental approaches
to getting things done work out for the best. This applies to communications – information, negotiation,
agreements – and to transportation – which is not only
bicycles and cars and buses and the like, but includes
all devices which get things done Its going to be a
wacky day!
Venus squares Saturn April 2nd from 19° Taurus.
This configuration is related to action that will take
place later in the month when Saturn goes stationary
direct in the exact degree of an active solar eclipse point
when Saturn was in 17° Taurus. Back then, August of
1999, There was a great Grand Cross configuration involving Sun/Moon/Uranus/Saturn/Mars in fixed signs
with Saturn in Taurus. This omen is ominous! Taurus
rules the earth, agriculture, and from agriculture, surplus, trade and economics. You may recall 1999 as the
year when the economic expansion of the ‘90s came to
a screeching halt. It was also the first year we heard scientists agreeing about global climate change. Now, we
have new reports of bees (which play a rather key role
in the plant kingdom) vanishing. How will our plants
grow if they do not get pollinated?
Venus square Saturn is a rather difficult time for
personal relationships that are not going well. This
configuration will bring the ways your pairings are not
working for you into sharp focus, giving you to chance
to work things out to a better more conscious and more
satisfying level of expression, if you are willing to negotiate with a mind to work things out. If folks are not
of a mind to work things out, well, this is a configuration that is good for finishing things one way or another. Because Saturn and Neptune are opposite each
other, Venus will square Neptune on April 4th. Where
Saturn and Venus are working towards a better stronger physical, material and status aspects of intimacy,
Venus/Neptune is concerned about the subtler aspects,
like feelings. Neptune adds a flavor of idealism to the
mix. Cold hard reality and the skills to manage reality
(Saturn), aesthetic values and the feel good warmth of
harmony and exchange of intimate energies (Venus),
and the sort of idealism that can lead to disappointment
and disillusion when out of synch with the physical reality of things are affecting us all at once here!
April 4th also sees Mercury and Jupiter square.
This is a signature for restlessness. Get outdoors! Take
a hike or a drive, or at least an elevator ride up to the
top or your building, the feeling of openness is needed today! Do try to remain moderate in your hiking
or travels. Excesses seem to go with Jupiter squares.
On April 5th, Jupiter goes stationary retrograde. Jupiter rules higher education, travel to foreign lands and
international affairs, religion and philosophy, persuasion, public relations and promotion, all of which are
spotlighted. Adding to Jupiter’s strength these days, on
April 6th Mars enters Pisces, a sign traditionally ruled
by Jupiter. Mars will be Pisces until May 15th, and emphasizes the arts and humanities, spiritual and psychological values. Working for the universal good, spending our selfish energies in ways that are good for others
and the whole is indicated this next 6 weeks. Selfish
behaviors that are not good for others may not work out
so well now.
April 9th and 10th Mercury squares Pluto, bringing our minds and thoughts to deep levels where we
hide the things we prefer not to deal with. On one hand
there is a good reason we do not want to deal with these
things, so there can be an unpleasant vibe here. On the
other hand, things rarely get better when swept under
the carpet. Rather things ignored fester, rot and decay.
So this can prove to be a very useful couple of days
as we clean up things and return things to a healthier
state.
Fast forward a week or so to April 19th. This is
the day of the Saturn station at 18° Leo. This triggers
the August 11, 1999 solar eclipse. Other past triggers to
this point, including Jupiter stations and a Mars/Sun
conjunction. Could this mean something involving
Iran’s nuclear program, or some other way our current
conflicts could escalate? For more detailed information
about this eclipse see my online article at: www.centerforspiritualastrology.com/?p=7. There you will find a
chart of the eclipse being triggered as well as a graphic
showing the shadow line of the eclipse. It runs from the
North Atlantic, makes land fall at Cornwall England,
Arizona Choices | 13
crosses the channel, Northern France, Central Germany, Austria, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India,
and out to the Indonesian Islands. I can’t help but see
the path of Christian crusaders to the Holy Lands and
the ancient conflict with the Ottoman Empire, as well
as the Battle Lines of the Battle of Kurukshutra (from
the Bhagavad-Gita) and lots of ancient karmas coming
together in this modern era. This is a time to remain
alert.
Late April Venus goes into another phase of interesting transits. Venus is art and beauty, money and
luxury, as well as love and friendship. April 22nd Venus
is square Mars. This is a wonderful transit when selfish
interests and motives are in balance with shared interests. Va-va-va-voom! One the other hand, its not unusual to feel like one’s personal needs are being neglected
in a relationship or that a relationship is being hurt by
the selfish actions of one of the participants, and under
these circumstances its time to clear the air and see if
things can be brought back into balance. If not, stormy
weather ahead! On the 6th of April, Venus squares Uranus, again calling into question the balance between
individual concerns and concerns of the union. This
is a volatile week for relationships. This doesn’t mean
its strictly about falling apart. Rather some folks you
might not expect to see together may hook up during
this time! Finally, Venus opposes Jupiter April 28th.
This is a simply delightful configuration unless you are
prone to overdoing things a bit. Venus and Jupiter are
both energies we enjoy. This is the perfect week-end for
camping with your sweetie! Also on April 28th, Mars is
conjunct Uranus. This configuration bears a warning to
slow down and pay good attention, as it is rash, implusive and a bit accident prone. Even so some wild time in
Nature would be good!
May begins with folks in a talking mood again.
Maybe we can still pull back from the brink, lets give
it a shot! Sun conjunct Mercury May 2nd gets things
started, but on the 5th communications hit the wall and
bog down as Mercury squares Saturn and some of the
most difficult differences and compromises are on the
table.
May 6th Venus is opposite Pluto. Some will heal,
others will hurt during this time, but no one will feel
lightly about things as this aspect rouses deep emotion
within personal exchanges. Do we have the trust to go
deeper? Or is this where our lack or trust or trustworthiness determines how the day will go? May 7th Mercury is square Neptune. Communications this day are
filled with confusion, misunderstanding, lack of clarity,
might as well take a day off. Yet this energy is fine for
making music, or doing art, engaging in spiritual activities, charitable work and the like.
14 | Arizona Choices
On May 8th, Venus enters Cancer. Now and for the
next several weeks there will be more emphasis on creating building and maintaining connections and meeting needs through those connections. May 9th Sun is
square Saturn. This day we may make a decision as to
which course to take, a decision that will produce important results in our lives. We have to deal realistically
with things and make some compromises or fail to and
experience the consequences of that.
Jupiter squares Uranus May 10th, in retrograde
motion. This is the 2nd in a series of 3 Jupiter/Uranus
squares from early January ’07 through mid-October
’07. In the midst of what could be described as difficult
and destructive times, here is this promise of magic!
This implies that there are new, as yet unknown or unconsidered solutions to the situations before us. This
configuration has the energy and intelligence working
to breakthrough to a new reality! Intelligent experimentation is in order.
Mars squares Pluto May 13th. This combines individual strength with group power. Power sharing
and power struggles are to be expected. While there
is a constructive way to use this configuration, lots of
folks will tap its destructive force instead as you don’t
need much knowledge or skill, or good intention for
that matter, to be destructive. Still there are times when
demolition or excavation must be done before building
or rebuilding is possible. If you have something that
should be burned or otherwise destroyed, this is the
day to do it!
May 19th and 20th we return to more open talks
about things, talks that could be productive, as Mercury opposes Jupiter and squares Uranus. All three of
these planets have some association with travel. Shuttle
diplomacy maybe? Or in a more constructive image,
planning and negotiating new energy policies, which
must be done globally, regionally, locally and in our
own homes.
April and May are going to bring interesting changes, challenges and opportunities to all. Keep your heads
and hearts open, pay attention, do right, and love one
another!
