FALL PREVENTION
DURING WINTER MONTHS
D
Focus on footwear: Rubber or neoprene soles, especially those with plenty of tread, provide better traction on
snow and ice than either leather or
plastic soles, making them the best
choice for fall prevention.
 Careful with cars: Many falls occur
when exiting or entering vehicles. Always make sure your footing is clear
when you get out of a car.
 Beware of black ice: It’s just as slippery as regular ice, but difficult to see,
making it a top winter safety concern.
Stay on clear pathways or ones that
have been treated with sand or salt.
 Shovel safely: If you have to shovel,
clear a level pathway to stand on so you
won’t lose your balance.
 Make winter safety a priority: Avoid
rushing and allow yourself extra time to
reach your destination safely. Avoid
short-cuts through snow or over icy areas.
Remember, falls can happen quickly, but
lead to long-lasting injuries.
URING WINTER STORMS AND
EXTREME COLD

Stay indoors during the storm.
 Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet
clothing loses all of its insulating value and
transmits heat rapidly.
Before attempting to shovel snow or rush
out for that last errand before a storm, consider these tips for fall prevention.

THE GOAL MUST
BE ZERO
ACCIDENTS

Watch for signs of hypothermia. These include
uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness,
and apparent exhaustion. If symptoms of hypothermia are detected, get the victim to a warm
location, remove wet clothing, warm the center
of the body first and give warm, non-alcoholic
beverages if the victim is conscious. Get medical help as soon as possible.

Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you
must drive: travel in the day; don’t travel alone;
keep others informed of your schedule; stay on
main roads and avoid back road shortcuts.

Let someone know your destination, your route,
and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets
stuck along the way, help can be sent along your
predetermined route.

If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or
layers of newspapers and wrap pipes in rags.
Completely open all faucets and pour hot water
over the pipes, starting where they were most
exposed to the cold (or where the cold was most
likely to penetrate).

If you will be going away during cold weather,
leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55ºF.
Christmas or Xmas?
Christmas is also sometimes known as Xmas. Some people don't think it's correct to call Christmas 'Xmas' as that takes
the 'Christ' (Jesus) out of Christmas. (As Christmas comes from Christ-Mass, the Church service that celebrated the birth
of Jesus.)
But that is not quite right! In the Greek language and alphabet, the letter that looks like an X is the Greek letter chi / Χ
(pronounced 'kye' - it rhymes with 'eye') which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Christos.
The early church used the first two letters of Christos in the Greek alphabet 'chi' and 'rho' to create a monogram (symbol)
to represent the name of Jesus. This looks like an X with a small p on the top: ☧
The symbol of a fish is sometimes used by Christians (you might see a fish sticker on a car or someone wearing a little
fish badge). This comes from the time when the first Christians had to meet in secret, as the Romans wanted to kill them
(before Emperor Constantine became a Christian). Jesus had said that he wanted to make his followers 'Fishers of Men',
so people started to use that symbol.
When two Christians met, one person drew half a basic fish shape (often using their foot in the dust on the ground) and
the other person drew the other half of the fish. The Greek word for fish is 'Ikthus' or 'Ichthys'. There are five Greek letters in the word. It can also make up a sentence of Christian beliefs 'Ie-sous Christos Theou Huios So-te-r' which in English means "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour". The second letter of these five letter is X or Christos!
So Xmas can also mean Christmas; but it should also be pronounced 'Christmas' rather than 'ex-mas'!
Bells, especially Church Bells, have traditionally been associated with Christmas for a long time. In the Anglican and Catholic churches, the church day starts at sunset, so any service after that is the first service of the day.
So a service on Christmas Eve after sunset is traditionally the first service of Christmas day! In churches that
have a Bell or Bells, They are often rung to signal the start of this service.
In some churches in the UK, it is traditional that the largest bell in the church is rung four times in the hour before midnight and then at midnight all the bells are rung in celebration.
In the Catholic Church, Christmas is the only time that Mass is allowed to be held at Midnight. This is because
in the early church, it was believed that Jesus was born at midnight, although there has never been any proof of
this! A lot of Churches have midnight services on Christmas Eve, although not every church will have a mass or
communion as part of the service.
In many Catholic countries such as France, Spain and Italy, the midnight mass service is very important and
everyone tries to go to a service.
In Victorian times, it was very fashionable to go carol singing with small handbells to play the tune of the carol.
Sometimes there would only be the bells and no singing! Handbell ringing is still popular today.
