New volunteers start the New Year right
Did you make a New
Year’s resolution this
year? 45% of Americans
usually do. Many decide
to volunteer and give
back to the community. It’s easy for resolve to
dwindle as January drags
along, with cold weather
and the post-holiday let
down making it all too
easy to just stay home.
Only 8% of New Year’s
resolutions are successful. That’s why it’s so
remarkable that despite
a polar vortex and busy
schedules, nearly 50 people started out 2014 by attending a volunteer orien-
tation at Little BrothersFriends of the Elderly,
Chicago Chapter, the first
step in making a difference in the lives of lonely
elders around the city.
Little Brothers-Friends
of the Elderly is committed to relieving isolation
and loneliness among the
elderly. It serves 1,340
Chicagoans ages 70 and
older, who are aging without the support of family
or friends. Little Brothers offers volunteers the
opportunity to truly be
a friend to seniors in the
city through visiting and
socialization programs.
Little Brothers is a
volunteer-driven organization. Each year, over
1,000 volunteers visit elders one-on-one, drive to
parties, deliver food bags,
help with events, deliver
holiday gifts, call to chat,
and brighten elders’ lives.
Little Brothers volunteers are all ages, from
children who visit elders
with their parents, to people in their nineties. The
next volunteer orientations at Little BrothersFriends of the Elderly are
Feb. 5, 8, and March 22.
Sign up to attend at www.
littlebrotherschicago.org.
thy recently announced
Chicago Police have already seized more than
425 illegal firearms in the
first month of 2014, underscoring the danger illegal guns pose to public
safety and police officers
alike.
Superintendent
McCarthy was joined by
police command staff, including Englewood (7th)
District Deputy Chief
Leo Schmitz.
“After historic lows
in crime and violence
in 2013, January saw
continued progress, yet
much more work remains
to be done and no one
will rest until everyone
in Chicago enjoys the
same sense of safety,”
said Superintendent McCarthy. “We continue to
make progress, like the
near all-time lows we
saw last February and
March, but it will become more challenging
without better laws that
help keep illegal guns out
of our communities and
punish the criminals who
carry them.”
Every year Chicago
Police recover more illegal guns than officers
laws as well as lax laws
in Illinois and surrounding states related to straw
purchasing and the transfer of guns. Additionally, without a state law
requiring real jail time
for criminals carrying illegal guns, offenders can
quickly be back out on
the street.
On January 30, Officers in the 8th (Chicago Lawn) District apprehended an offender
in an attempted murder
after seeing him fleeing
the scene where he shot
a man. The offender, a
22-year-old
convicted
felon named Jovan Williams, was charged with
Attempt First Degree
Murder and Aggravated
Battery/Discharge Firearm in the incident.
In April 2012, Williams
and sentenced to 3 years
in the prison. Instead,
he was made eligible for
boot camp, credited with
time served, and paroled
in September 2013. With
a three-year mandatory
minimum for illegal gun
possession, he would
have been in prison and
not have been on the
streets to commit a shooting last week.
This was not Williams’
first illegal gun conviction, nor was it the first
time his punishment
did not fit the dangerous crime. In April 2011,
Williams was convicted
of Aggravated UUW and
sentenced to one year in
prison. However, he was
credited with time served
on that illegal gun sentence and paroled just 3
months later.
Secretary of State Offices closed

that all Driver Services facilities and offices, including facilities open Tuesday through Saturday will be
closed February 12th, in observance of Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday. All Driver Services facilities will reopen for regular business on February 13th. Individuals can visit the Secretary of State’s website, www.
cyberdriveillinois.com to locate the nearest Driver
Services facility and the hours of operation.
FHM Scouts help at Papal Mass
Scouts and their families from Five Holy Martyrs Pack 3465 & Troop 465 recently spent time cleaning up the church grounds in preparation for the Papal Mass
which was held on October 5th to celebrate the Anniversary on Pope John Paul
II’s visit to FHM back in 1979. They removed all the debris from the area and
set up the area for the outdoor Mass as well. Then they participated in the Mass
which was attended by more than 600 parishioners and guests. The scouts meet
on Fridays at the parish. For information, contact Mr. Koziel at 773-575-0207.

Lend Me Your Ear...
Greetings, fine readers
of mine. Toots is confined to her quarters. You
will not see Toots on the
streets of Chicago for the
next few days.
Why, you ask? Well,
because They are finally
on to me. Yes, They! My
question is “Who Are
They?” The million dollar question. I don’t think
anyone knows exactly
who They are. But They
are always around.
They won’t let us do it,
they won’t let us have it,
they will get us, they are
watching us... Conspiracy Theory at its best. And
They have zeroed in.
Toots is now on the
lam, stealthily moving
from town to town. They
will never take me alive.
I have modeled myself
after Dr. Richard Kimble,
the Fugitive. I am innocent and I shall prove it.
I will gather my forces
(my readers), erect soap
boxes (to stand on) and
yell out, “Hell no, I won’t
go!” I can see it now and
I am excited. I shall overcome the evil forces.
Okay, Madame Editor,
I admit that I am totally
carried away this time.
No, actually They are
not after me. Why am I
confined to quarters, you
ask? Simply because I
hate this weather and I
choose to go into hibernation mode.
I was out and about
on Saturday - not looking my most fantastic
self. Yes, “old grey” was
upon my head. Stopped
to take a picture of some
geese on a school lawn.
Beautiful - fresh snow
with over fifty geese. The
sign says, “Don’t feed the
wild life.” And Toots was
not. All of a sudden a car
pulls up and the occupant screams, “Get out of
there.” Huh! Toots looks
and this woman is irate.
Wow! So Toots waves at
her (and does not flip her
the bird as first instinct
demands. And... no pun
intended. Get it... bird?)
So Toots continues to
line up her shot and this
woman is still screaming. Toots slowly begins
to saunter to her vehicle.
The woman (with a truly
“ugly face” - don’t let an
angel pass you or your
face will stay that way)
screams, “I will kick
your ass.” Huh! So Toots
begins to walk over to
her and tells her, “Better “ugly faces” than you
have tried - so have at it.”
She roars off. Lady, get
a life and unscrew those
facial muscles.
So the lesson of this
week is “Calm your ass
down.” Relax!!
Oh, and second lesson
of the week: Toots, pay
attention! You are not a
brain surgeon. Learn to
follow instruction. You
must learn to obey commands. Be responsible.
Listen to the wise words
of Madame Editor at all
times. You must follow
the great example of the
great Madame Editor.
Yes, Madame Editor Toots knows she should
not use the word ‘ass’ in
columns. I am using the
definition like in donkey
- not as in derrière (notice
me getting in my French
connection). Is this permissible, Old Great and
Grand??
Readers, one more little tip - that you may be
able to use in your own
lives. See the superb way
I worked Madame Editor
this week? I incorporated
my ‘suck-up’ in with the
lesson. Know when to
suck it up. Got to hand it
to Toots, not as dumb as
she sometimes appears.
‘til next week...

Not Your Parents Grammys
I confess that I haven’t
watched the Grammys
in many years. It’s hard
to watch the recording
industry congratulate itself for mediocrity. Not
to mention that the show
was notoriously out of
touch with the contemporary scene. And often just
plain boring. Who cares
who won the award for
the Best Asst. Gofer On
A Spoken Word Album?
Things have changed
dramatically since I last
watched as evidenced by
the opening performance
by Beyonce. Can they do
that on prime time TV?
The performance was so
graphic and explicit that
it was ludicrous when the
Show Your
Support
For Our
Brave
Troops!
Fly the U.S.
Flag Proudly!
censors bleeped out lyrics. I can only speak for
the men, but hey guys,
did you even notice any
lyrics? If this performance were any more
explicit they would have
had to hand out condoms
to the audience.
There’s a lot more music and a lot less boring
awards on the show now.
Spectacle is big, as it has
been for a while in pop.
Witness the Beyonce and
Katy Perry numbers. The
music is more contemporary, with a nod to the
past. And the awards are
still mostly about sales
rather than artistic merit.
Highlights: The Beatles
won a Lifetime Achievement Award. Paul McCartney won for Best
Rock Song That Nobody Has Heard. I’m not
sure why Chicago was
there. Perhaps they won
an award for Best Tribute Band. Stevie Wonder proved that he can
make even robots sound
funky when he jammed
with Daft Punk on “Get
Lucky”.
Yoko
Ono
proved that an octogenarian can shake her booty
and still look good in the
process.
The biggest lowlight?
The producers and directors of the show proved
beyond any doubt that
the Grammys are all
about
commercialism
and not the music. They
cut off Trent Reznor and
the Queens Of The Stone
Age in mid-song at the
end of the show after the
credits ran out. Who does
that on the music industry’s biggest showcase?

What Do You Do For A Living?
I teach social studies at Queen of Peace H.S.
One Of The Biggest Events In Your Life?
Last year I had the opportunity to travel to southern Africa for 19 days. I have wanted to visit Africa for quite a few years and I was ecstatic to be
able to take this trip. I had so many amazing experiences during this adventure. Every day brought
something new. I absolutely loved it.
The Best Advice That You Ever Received?
The best advice I have ever received was from my
history professor, Br. Ron Isetti. I was a senior in
college and had just decided that I had no interest
in pursuing a career in accounting. I was feeling
lost and not really knowing how to find a goal or
direction. He quoted Joseph Campbell and said,
“Follow your bliss.” So I put my faith in God and
did what felt right. I applied to the LaSallian Volunteers for a full-time volunteer position following graduation. I was given a placement in an adult
literacy center on the southside of Chicago and I
worked there for three years. This is when I fell
in love with teaching. So Br. Ron’s words really
set me on the path I am on today. His words are
the best and wisest advice I have ever been lucky
enough to hear. Teaching is my bliss; it makes me
happy; it feeds my soul.
When Are You The Happiest?
I am happy in lots of places and lots of times. I’m
so happy in my classroom when my students and
I are having an engaging conversation or when I
see light bulbs go on in someone’s head because
she gets the thing we have been working on for
a while. I’m happy at home watching something
like Downton Abbey or sitting outside in nice
weather with an awesome book. I’m happy when
I’m with my friends and we are just making each
other laugh so hard that we have tears coming out
of our eyes.
Anything Else To Add?
I absolutely adore teaching at Queen of Peace.
Whether they are dancing on stage, distributing Eucharist at Mass, presenting the results of a
research project in class or facilitating a student
government meeting, it is a privilege to watch
our students’ self-confidence blossom as they
find their voices and share their gifts with others.

S. Linder Avenue in Burbank. For information

St. Nicholas of Tolentine School orchestra, violin
and 5th grade chorus visited Saint Michael School
in Orland Park. The students received a warm welcome from the St. Michael students, staff and parent
group. It was a wonderful experience for students to
meet each other. Games and a tour help the students
get to know one another. The St. Nicholas Orchestra
and violins begin the all school Mass and performed
several songs. The St Michael and St Nicholas chorus
performed together during the service. To learn more

Court order
secured w/waste
management
landfill
Attorney General Lisa
Madigan recently announced that a court has
entered
an order requir

ing
a DeKalb County
landfill operator to take
extra precautions to prevent the release of nox
ious
gases and to notify

the Illinois Environmen
tal
Protection Agency
(IEPA) before digging
into the solid waste at the
landfill and causing the
release of landfill gases. Madigan’s office filed
a civil lawsuit, along with
the agreed injunction order in DeKalb County
Circuit Court in response
to the Jan. 14 release of a
sickening odor at a landfill run by Waste Management of Illinois, Inc.
A contractor working
on a project to expand
the landfill’s gas collection system dug into a
section of decomposing
garbage and caused the
release of landfill gas that
produced a heavy odor. The gas and odor drifted
into a nearby elementary
school’s ventilation system, sickening students
and teachers.
The agreed injunction
order prohibits Waste
Management from digging into solid waste at
the landfill if the wind
is from a southerly direction in excess of 10
miles per hour or if other
conditions would cause
the digging to impact air
quality. The order also requires employees to wear
gas monitors to detect releases when excavating
at the landfill. Finally,
the order mandates that
Waste Management install a weather station at
the landfill to continuously record conditions and
report them to the IEPA. The civil complaint filed
alleges several violations
of the environmental
laws stemming from the
Jan. 14 incident, including conduct that caused
substantial
endangerment to the public health
and welfare, air pollution, violations of waste
disposal regulations and
violations of the landfill
permit. Madigan’s office
seeks the statutory maximum penalty of $50,000
per violation and $10,000
for each day each violation continues.
