A team of academicians led by Datuk Dr Kamal Salih, Dr Mei Ling Young, the late Dr Saidi Hashim with the help of Professor Ron Harden and Professor Ian Hart, two world-renowned medical educationists, conceptualised the International Medical College (IMC). Professor Ong Kok Hai joined the team later. This was a unique educational venture established in line with the Malaysian government's objective of making the country a leading centre of educational excellence in the region and providing more Malaysian students the opportunity to achieve their aspirations to become doctors and healthcare professionals. 4 Datuk Dr Kamal Salih Dr Mei Ling Young The Late Dr Saidi Hashim The calibre of the medical educationists and the reputation This was a pioneering effort involving a private medical training of the Board of Governors initially helped lend credibility to institution representing a totally new and innovative concept of the project. As the student population grew, the IMU moved from its campus in Petaling Jaya to a new and larger campus in Bukit Jalil on 1 January 2000. More PMS, particularly in Australasia and the United Kingdom then joined our consortium. Having established a reputation as a premier private medical university with high calibre international connections, the IMU strives to innovate in medically-related education by developing novel curricula, new ways of delivery and assessment. To remain the premier private medical university, the IMU must develop quality programmes and services of an international standard. 5 The mace is the symbol of authority of the International Medical University (IMU). The globe at the top symbolises the international nature of the University. Gold denotes the quality of education provided by the IMU. The seven kris (traditional Malay weapon) represent the nations participating in the International Medical Consortium. The songket motif symbolises the country’s cultural tradition. As graduates, you will be receiving your final degree in your field today, a testimony that you have worked hard through late nights and early mornings, persisted and excelled. Today is the most deserved celebration for all of you. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my heartiest congratulations to the graduating students of our Master of Science, medical, medical sciences and pharmacy programmes as well as the convocating medical and pharmacy students. It has been ten years since we started the MBBS (IMU) and our Clinical School in Seremban. In conjunction with its 10th Year Anniversary Celebrations, various activities will be held from 5 to 10 October 2009. These activities include exhibitions, sporting events, cultural events as well as health screening and awareness campaigns. Staff, students and alumnus of IMU and staff of the Ministry of Health (Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar, Hospital Port Dickson, Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah, Hospital Batu Pahat and health clinics) will participate in these activities. The highlight of the celebrations will be a dinner and show on 10 October 2009 at the Clinical School in Seremban. In 2008, Ministry of Health (MOH) sanctioned the use of Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah (HTAN) in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan as an additional teaching hospital for the IMU. The university has already started to utilise the hospital for teaching and some faculty members have been providing services to this hospital. The training of appropriate manpower for industries and the workplace is important for university graduates. In order to fulfill this role, universities would need to collaborate with relevant industries and establishments if they are to deliver appropriately trained manpower. The IMU is extremely conscious that its graduates should have a seamless transfer into the workplace. Towards this end, the IMU has and will continue to seek appropriate industrial partners who can contribute to this important process. To date, the IMU has already entered into agreements with BP Labs, Back to Health Malaysia and SRAS (or Satellite Reconnaissance Arresting Sickness) Berhad to be its industrial linkage partners. An important milestone for IMU this year is the introduction of a new programme in April 2009, Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons) (IMU). This flexible programme is targeted solely for registered nurses who wish to upgrade their professional qualification while they are working. For the undergraduate programmes, pharmacy, medical biotechnology, psychology, biomedical science and nutrition and dietetics students now have an additional option to transfer their credits to overseas universities in Australia, New Zealand or United Kingdom. Another great development for our university which would reflect our commitment to meeting the needs of healthcare professionals in our region will be the introduction of Chiropractic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) programmes in the near future. The university’s commitment to our communities is also a very important part of its corporate initiative. Under its Community Social Responsibility programme, the university has adopted three villages, Kampung Tekir in Labu, Negeri Sembilan, Kampung Simpang Enam in Johor and Kampung Ulu Serendah in Selangor. As a responsible corporate and social citizen, the IMU, through its staff and students, has made several visits to these kampungs to provide health screening for its villagers. We are proud to note that the projects that are held in Batu Pahat is organised by the IMU students in Semester 10 in collaboration with Hospital Batu Pahat, health clinics of relevant districts and the local village organising committees. In this joyous occasion, it is important for all of you to remember that you are very fortunate to have so many advantages when so many other people in Malaysia and around the world have so little. Each of you will have the opportunity to make a difference in this world. In making this difference, you will be faced with many difficult and confusing decisions and choices. It is important to do the right thing in the right way each and every time. This is a tall order, but one that I am confident the IMU graduates are capable of fulfilling, as a great university like IMU prepares its graduates well for the challenges ahead. You will all be aided by a solid foundation - your education at IMU. This foundation will have given you tremendous assets, the ability and desire to continue to learn and professional practice - skills, knowledge and virtues, that will serve you well throughout your lives. It is hoped that you will continue to find fulfillment and success in the pursuit of your goals. Don’t forget to pursue your lives with integrity, professionalism and a strong focus on community and family. Have a wonderful celebration today as IMU’s latest graduates and newest alumni. Congratulations once again on your well-deserved success and good luck in your future endeavours.
