Happy Friday to All of You! March 2015 Quote of the Week: "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-‐six times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." -‐ Michael Jordan, Hall of Fame shooting guard Senior Parents Senior Showcase is coming very quickly for your senior student. WESTVIEW LIFE
DAVID WILKINSON
Westview Teacher
A Beaverton teacher was in Washington D.C. to attend the President's State of the Union Address. David Wilkinson, a language arts teacher at Westview High School, joined the country's political elite for President Barack Obama's address Tuesday night at the House of Representatives. Wilkinson was a guest of Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Bonamici, who has been working on a bill that would eliminate unnecessary assessments in schools, said Wilkinson will "have valuable insight about the President's education policies and proposals." Bonamici's office said she picked Wilkinson because of his extensive experience as a public school teacher and advocate in the community. WESTVIEW CHOIR

Registration for AP Testing will run from March 2nd – March 12th. The fee per test is $57. If your child has registered for an AP test and misses the test for any reason, there will be a "No Show" fee of $35/test, refunding $21 of the $57 paid. AP Testing is May 4th – May 15th. Late testing (See below) is May 20th – 22nd. The AP schedule of tests is located on the Advanced Programs bulletin board located in lower North by the N110 computer lab. Your school may offer late testing for certain circumstances
If you have an extreme circumstance that prevents you from taking the AP Exam on the regularly scheduled exam date — for example, if you wish to take exams that are scheduled for the same time slot, conflict with IB testing, or if you have a serious illness — check with your AP Coordinator. Depending on your reason for late testing, you may be required to pay an additional $45 per test. All AP tests for WHS will take place at the Capitol Center building located at NW 185th and Walker Road. Entrance will be through the Section B doors located at the NE corner of the building. You must provide your own transportation. ** For testing in May, students will need to have their picture ID and an approved calculator. Bubbling for the AP tests will be April 15th. GOT A TEEN DRIVER? One of the most exciting times for us on our Journey through adolescence is getting a drivers license. It opens up a whole new world to our kids offering them freedom, and in their mind, independence. However, with those joys comes an immense level of responsibility. Below is some important information to know and discuss with your kids when they receive their license. 1. For the first six months no passengers under the age of 20 that are not direct family members. 2. For the second six months you cannot drive with more than three (3) passengers who are under age 20 who are not members of your immediate family. If new drivers are cited by law enforcement for driving outside of restrictions, their privileges could be suspended, and such suspensions could last until they turn 18. There are specific reasons that passengers are restricted from being in the car with new drivers. Studies have shown the following critical facts: -‐Two or more peer passengers more than triples the risk of a fatal crash with a teen at the wheel. -‐With peer passengers in the car, male teen drivers were almost six times more likely to perform an illegal maneuver and twice more likely to act aggressively before crashing than when driving alone. Parents, please help us keep our children and our roads safe. Ensure your child is following the restrictions of their license. The Department of Transportation will not issue driving privileges to anyone under 18 years who has not either graduated from high school or received a GED certificate. Students under the age of 18 must have a DMV Statement of Enrollment form from the school. Students can stop by the main office to get their form between 7:00am and 3:00pm. These forms are good for three months. SENIOR NEWS

District Goal for 2010-15: All students will show continuous progress toward their personal learning goals, developed in collaboration
with teachers and parents, and will be prepared for post-secondary education and career success.
Dear Westview families,
On Tuesday, March 17th all freshmen, sophomore and juniors in the Beaverton School District will take an EXPLORE,
PLAN or ACT Plus Writing assessment. Seniors will need to select an extra-curricular option for that day. Freshmen and
sophomores will register for the EXPLORE and PLAN on the day of the exam. The exam starts at 7:45 am. Students will
be released at 1:00 pm.
EXPLORE is designed to give ninth grade students and their parents feedback on how well prepared the student is in
English, math, reading and science. It will provide information on academic strengths and weaknesses as well as survey
students on their needs and goals.
The tenth grade PLAN will provide information on student academic strengths and weaknesses and provide your child
with an estimated ACT score. PLAN also connects your child to information about college and financial aid programs
and helps your child explore careers that match his or her interests.
The eleventh grade ACT Plus Writing assessment includes four subject area tests and a 30-minute writing test. The scores
are used by the District and the State to assess student learning gains. Additionally, ACT results are accepted by all U.S.
colleges and universities. Only juniors may take the ACT.
Seniors do not report to school on Tuesday, March 17th. Students are expected to arrange a career related learning
experience such as a job shadow, college visit, career research, or mock interview this day.
All students taking an assessment are encouraged to bring their student ID card, a calculator, #2 pencils, and a snack.
Please be certain to verify that the calculator meets ACT requirements. Students may visit the ACT website,
www.actstudent.org, for the calculator requirements. Cell phones, iPods, Gameboys, and similar electronic devices are
not to be used in the testing area and should be left home. Please do not schedule medical appointments for this day.
We will not be able to interrupt an exam to remove a student. Encourage your child to get a good night's rest the night
before and to eat a nutritious breakfast.
Regular morning bus runs and breakfast service will be provided on Tuesday, March 17th. All exams begin at 7:45 am.
Students accustomed to the Late Arrival option will need to be on campus prior to 7:45 am. Lunch service will be
provided. Please remember that afternoon dismissal will be at 1:00 pm with buses departing at 1:10 pm. Special
education buses will run their normal routes at 1:00 as well. Please contact your child's counselor or Jeff Giberson if you
have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
