CatPrint OCTdocx - Beaverton School District
October 2015 Happy Friday to All of You! Quote of the Week: "Before the beginning of brilliance, there must be great chaos. Before a brilliant person begins something great, they must look foolish in the crowd." Fu His Wildcat Parents, Attached you will find our first CatPrint of the year. Within the CatPrint you will find more specifics regarding a number of things including, PTO, Back to School Night, College and Career news, and our School Accreditation. We will send out the CatPrint once per month, but of course, every week in between I will send out the Principal's PRIDE Folder. We are officially at the end of our first month into school. Nice work! The staff and students are now settling in and are off and running. Of course tonight we will celebrate Homecoming with a football game against Jesuit, followed by our annual Homecoming Dance from 7-‐10PM. The spirit in the school is evident to which I am very pleased and very excited! The kids don't know this yet, but at our next assembly we are going to learn our school fight song Next week on Tuesday is our Back to School Night from 6:30-‐8:30 PM. Please come and join us as this is an excellent time for you to meet your child's teachers. We will have parents run through every one of your child's classes where parents will get opportunities to hear from teachers about philosophy, grading, etc. I am absolutely positive that you will enjoy these presentations. On the next PRIDE Folder I am going to start throwing out some "shout-‐outs" to students, teams, clubs, and teachers for accomplishments throughout the year. We have a ton of great things happening at Westview and it is important that you hear about the many things, which makes us all proud to be Wildcats! We are going to start out with letting you know the students and staff who have received PRIDE Awards since the start of school. PRIDE awards are given by staff for various types of PRIDE behavior. This weekend I plan on having some fun at the dance and then will hopefully have some down time with my kids. My son is involved with Flag Football while my daughter enjoys playing soccer, so down time for me is being out at ball games. Have a great weekend!

Dear Parent/Guardian:
With the recent legalization of marijuana in Oregon, we want to remind you about state laws and district policies that
affect students and adults on Beaverton School District property.
Like alcohol, Oregon law requires a person to be 21 years of age to purchase and consume marijuana in Oregon. With the
increase in media attention, including social media, and the assumption by some that marijuana is safe for everyone, we
are concerned that once recreational sale begins in October, 2015, there will be greater access by our youth.
Please remember that Oregon law prohibits anyone, adult or student, to possess any form of marijuana on or
within 1000 feet of a school campus. Violations of District Policy JFCK and JFCK-AR will result in disciplinary
measures and possible notification to legal authorities.
Because children’s brains are still developing, it’s important to know the facts about the effects of marijuana on children
and teens. According to a recent study by Lancet Psychiatry and published in the Washington Post, teenagers who smoke
marijuana daily are over 60 percent less likely to complete high school than those who never use. They are also 60 percent
less likely to graduate from college. Extensive research has shown that marijuana’s negative effects on attention, memory,
and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. Current district curriculum standards
address marijuana and other drug use, especially within our health courses. We continue to investigate ways to provide
more educational lessons for all students. For additional information and resources on substance use by teens, including
parenting tips, addiction screening, research and helpful articles, visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse at
www.drugabuse.gov.
Please talk to your child and reinforce the dangers and potential consequences of substance abuse, especially marijuana
and marijuana edibles. Remind your children to be extremely cautious about any food they consume prepared or brought
by other students. States who have also legalized marijuana, specifically Washington and Colorado, have experienced
increased marijuana use within their schools, especially with the availability of edible marijuana in multiple forms.
Numerous packaged and prepared candy and cookies, as examples, include marijuana, and it is not easily detectable.
If you have concerns about your child or have additional questions about marijuana or other substance related issues,
please contact your family pediatrician, your student’s school counselor or your student’s school administrator.
Sincerely,
Ginny Hansmann

September 16, 2015
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Last spring, students in grades 3-8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took new
state tests (Smarter-Balanced) in English language arts and mathematics. These tests provide schools, our
district, and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps and
where they are on their path to college and career readiness. Last year, about 95% of students in Oregon took
these new tests. In Beaverton, nearly 97% of students participated. While our overall participation rate was
above the state average, a handful of our schools had rates below the state average.
Smarter-Balanced is a measurement that provides us with information about student progress on state learning
standards. This assessment gives us a more complete picture of student progress. Unlike previous state
examinations, it is designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills in addition
to content standards. It also allows us to evaluate individual student progress both within our state and
nationally. The data helps us to identify where students are struggling, where they are excelling, and whether we
are fulfilling our goal of narrowing achievement gaps. When parents opt students out of the state tests, we have
a less accurate picture of how our students are performing; this limits our ability to address issues, to better
serve students, and to continue to improve our educational system.
In Beaverton, we are deeply committed to ensuring that all students have the supports they need to achieve at
high levels, to graduate prepared for college, and to compete in a globally competitive workforce. While we
recognize that many juniors have a heavy testing load during the spring, those who earn a Level 3 or 4 on these
state assessments and meet senior coursework requirements may also be able to forgo college placement testing
and move directly into credit bearing courses in higher education. Students can also demonstrate Essential
Skills required for graduation using the state tests. Our goal continues to be that all students will be well
prepared for post secondary education and career success.
Sincerely,
Ginny Hansmann
