Tues Oct 6th Heads Up for Healthier Brains Join Patsy LeBlanc of the Alzheimer’s Society of NS to learn about simple ways to improve your brain health and potentially reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s never too late or too early to start taking action! (7-9 pm) Enjoy our Games @ the Library Week program with an introduction to the game Cape Bretoners have made their own. In small groups, we’ll try our hand at Tarabish. Both beginners and experienced mentors welcome. Wed Oct 28th Reading the Qur’an in English Dr Robert Campbell from the CBU Library will introduce his new book Reading the Qur’an in English, and help us understand the language and structural logic of the Qur’an. Seniors’ Cafés: Tues Oct 6th McConnell Library Diabetes (1-3:30 pm) Arlene Parsons of the Cape Breton Branch of the Candian Diabetes Association will be here to talk about “What You Need to Know” about diabetes. Come to learn and share your stories. Tues Oct 13th Songs as Cultural Portraits Tues Oct 13th Celtic Conversations (12:15-1:15 pm) Irish singer Liam O’Maonlai will discuss and demonstrate the meaning behind traditional songs, and show how codes and clues were infused in the song’s content to spread messages in times of political and religious strife. Tues Oct 20th Games Day! (1-3:30 pm) Wed Oct 14th Newfoundland Celtic Folk Newfoundland based duo Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne offer a fine mix of musicianship, prolific songwriting and storytelling in the Newfoundland folk music style. Thurs Oct 15 English Language Irish Ballads th Guitarist and singer Keenan Barrett has been steeped in music from a young age. From Inishwoven, Co. Donagal, Ireland, he is a noted performer in the English language ballad, which plays a huge part in the Cape Breton Tradition. Fri Oct 16th The “other” Harp Brendan Power plays the other kind of “harp” – a phenomenal harmonica. He will discuss how this instrument fits in as well in the Celtic environment as it does in blues and gold rock genres. Andrew White will accompany Brendan.
