Named after the alderman , Charles and Joe Wicker who bought the land that was to become
Wicker Park.

Gentrification has helped the area by increasing business and increasing property value.
“James Iha, former guitarist of the band Smashing Pumpkins” and “Matt Skiba singer/guitarist of

“In 2001 a season of MTV's The Real World, named The Real World: Chicago, was filmed in Wicker
Park.”(sussle.org) This caused protests as those living in the neighborhood were afraid that it would

This park has a children’s playground,
garden, field house with gymnasium,
dog friendly park, and athletic fields
for: soccer, basketball, etc.

The History behind Wicker Park
Near the end of the 19th century in
1868, the Chicago Board of Public
Works set aside an 80 acre plot of
land along Milwaukee Avenue to
build a park.
In 1870 brothers Charles and Joel Wicker
purchased the land that bears their name,
and after the Chicago Fire of 1871
development of the land began.
The History behind Wicker Park
In the 1960s and 1970s the completion of
the Kennedy Expressway and displacement
of Latinos in the surrounding area changed
Wicker Park once again. By the end of the
70s Wicker Park had lost about 11% of its
population
From the 1930s to the
1950s Wicker Park saw an
influx of Polish immigrants,
displaced by war in Europe.
As more people entered the
area beautiful churches
were built and became part
of the Archdiocese of
Chicago.

The 80s and 90s brought
new development groups
to the area, like the
Northwest Community
Organization, in order to
build affordable housing.
These groups brought
many artists to the area,
living abandoned factories
close to the loop.
