Baby Boomers? and spirits categories, while While some experts claim consumers in the highly-fragmented wine category tend to put more value on style and experimentation. However, as craft beer grows in popularity, industry experts have noted this segment of the beer category is beginning to operate more like the wine category. Based on this assumption, Wine Opinions recently conducted a survey of 1,000 high-frequency wine drinkers in order to learn about their beer consumption habits. Wine Opinions found that the majority of those wine consumers who frequently drink beer skew toward craft beer rather than domestic premiums. In fact, only 9% of respondents said they never drink craft beer, as opposed to 52% who said they never drink domestic super premium beers. When Wine Opinions looked at the trends based on age, they found that those that are high frequency wine and craft beer drinkers tended to skew male and a bit younger (Gen x and Millennial,) while high Check out our WEBSITE! www.graybealdistributing.com Filled with product information and links to websites, events, past newsletters, and career opportunities. wine and craft beer are now in direct competition, John Gillespie, Wine Opinions chief, says increases in craft beer consumption among this particular population is coming at the expense of other types of beer, not the wine category. “A lot of what wine drinkers like about craft beer are exactly the same things that they find compelling and fascinating about wine,” he continued. “They’re trading those beer-drinking occasions up to craft beer, and if you think about it, it’s exactly the same thing that’s been happening in wine for years, which is to say people are trading up, spending more, buying wines that are more distinct and differentiated between region and appellation as well as variety and style. There’s a gradual trend away from the common and ordinary beer toward beers, that in fact, have more in common with wine than they do a lot of other things.” Furthermore, we would argue these smaller segment trends are a by-product of a larger movement away from blind brand loyalty toward more critical buying habits. PORTLAND, OREGON SPRING 2014 With an overall increase of 3.8 share (16.3 % increase in dollar sales), CRAFT now owns a 45.8 % dollar share of the Portland beer market. Generation X, commonly abbreviated to Gen X, is the generation born after the Western Post–World War II baby boom. Demographers, historians, and commentators use beginning birth dates from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. Millennials (also known as Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X. There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends. Researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. Baby Boomers are people born during the demographic Post–World War II baby boom between the years 1946 and 1964. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the term “baby boomer” is also used in a cultural context. Therefore, it is impossible to achieve broad consensus of a precise date definition, even within a given territory. Different groups, organizations, individuals, and scholars may have widely varying opinions on what constitutes a baby boomer, both technically and culturally. In Europe and North America boomers are widely associated with privilege, as many grew up in a time of widespread government subsidies in post-war housing and education, and increasing affluence. What is a Beer Sommelier? A beer sommelier, sometimes known as a “cicerone”, which is a private trademark rather than a general term, is a trained professional who works in the alcoholic beverage industry specializing in the service and knowledge of beer. This knowledge includes an understanding of styles, brewing, ingredients, history of beer and brewing, glassware, beer service, draught systems, beer tasting and food pairings. The profession is relatively new but growing. Our on-premise manager, Brian Bettencourt, has just earned his beer sommelier’s certification, adding another level of expertise we can offer our accounts. What is a Radler? The Radler (literally “cyclist”, which refers to its reputation as popular sports drink) is a beerbased mixed drink (Biermischgetränk) with a long history in German-speaking regions. The original Radler consisted of a 1:1 or 3:2 mixture of various types of beer and Germanstyle soda pop or lemonade. During the summer months, Radler is very popular due to its reputation of being a thirstquencher. The product is now being offered by various breweries in bottles and cans. 10 Barrel Brewing of Bend, Oregon has the seasonal Swill, an American Radler consisting of the “perfect blend of American sour and multiple layers of citrus. The ultimate summer crusher!”. The Coors Light Summer Brew is also a Radler, featuring a refreshing blend of Coors Light and natural citrus flavors. Refreshingly light Radlers and Summer Ales pair perfectly with backyard dishes such as barbecued chicken, fruit salad, watermelon, and grilled fish. Welcome Hop Valley Brewing In July we’ll begin to stock craft beer from Hop Valley Brewing of Eugene, Oregon. On the list will be the DoubleD Blonde Ale, the Alpha Centauri and Proxima IPA’s, the Stepchild Red, the VIP (Vanilla Infused Porter), and the seasonal Citrus Mistress. Mixology with Crispin Cider Here are some super refreshing mixed drink recipes for summer, all beginning with Crispin Cider. A Snakelight is Crispin and Coors Light; a Blue Velvet is Crispin and Blue Moon; a Lemon Tree is Crispin mixed with a Radler, such as Swill or Coors Light Summer Brew.
